Barbados has announced a plan to remove Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and become a republic. The island nation's governor general, Sandra Mason, said Tuesday during a speech that "the time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind."

Mason, who was speaking on behalf of the country's prime minister, Mia Mottley, said Barbados will seek full sovereignty by November 2021, adding it can "be in no doubt about its capacity for self-governance.

"

"Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State," Mason said. "This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving. Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic  by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence."

The move would make Barbados the first country to drop the monarch since Mauritius did it nearly three decades ago in 1992. Queen Elizabeth is the head of state of 16 countries that are part of the Commonwealth, which includes the United Kingdom and former British colonies. Barbados gained its independence from British rule in 1966.

Buckingham Palace said the issue was a matter for the people of Barbados. Britain's Foreign Office told CBS News in a statement that the move would be a decision for Barbados.

"Barbados and the UK are united in our shared history, culture, language, and much more. We have an enduring partnership and will continue to work with them along with all our valued Caribbean partners," the statement said.

Queen Elizabeth's role is ceremonial and symbolic in the Bahamas. While her title includes Queen of Barbados, she is not involved in the day-to-day business of the country's government. With the advice of Barbadian ministers, Queen Elizabeth appoints a governor general, who represents the queen at formal events and she keeps in regular contact with. That title is occupied by Mason.

Deion Sanders confirms hes the new head coach of Jackson State

Deion Sanders is taking his talents to the coaching level, as he’ll be the 21st head coach of the Jackson State football team.

Deion Sanders officially confirmed the news about his new job on his new podcast and said the reason he’s made this decision is because “God called me to Jackson State.”

Sanders played in the NFL for 12 years before retiring and then returned for 2 more seasons before hanging up the cleats once again. Sanders also spent nine years in Major League Baseball and there’s a great 30 for 30 on him playing in a football game and a baseball game in a 24-hour span. Prime Time is a freak of an athlete.

This is huge news for Deion Sanders, but even bigger news for Jackson State

“It’s very big for Jackson State University,” Robinson said, per The Clarion-Ledger. “Not only for Jackson State University, this is very big for the country right now. Very big for the state of Mississippi. To Coach Prime, Jackson State University — a blue blood program full of Hall of Famers— it’s just a great time.”

Jackson State plays in the SWAC and hasn’t won a conference title since 2007. Since then, it’s been pretty tough sledding for the Tigers, who have been through three different head coaches since 2014. Their latest head coach, John Hendrick, went 6-9 at the helm and his contract was not renewed prior to this season as a result.

Sanders hasn’t coached Division I football before or even a college program before, currently serving as the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian in Texas. The Hall of Fame cornerback will have his work cut out for him when it comes to turning around Jackson State, but recruiting players to play for a Hall of Famer might not be so difficult.

It should be fun to watch Prime Time work his magic as a Division I head coach!
