Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon on track for 2022 release – with casting already underway

GAME of Thrones fans sit tight as the prequel House of the Dragon is on track to be released in two years time - and the cast is already underway.

Despite the current coronavirus pandemic, the spin-off show of the popular HBO series is set to hit our screens in 2022.

Back in July, a source confirmed to EW that casting for the prequel, which was created by Miguel Sapochnik, has already began.

In a recent chat with Deadline, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys confirmed that it is currently underway and it should be on our screens within the next two years.

House of Dragon will consist of 10 episodes and will be set 300 years before the American fantasy drama.

It is based on George R.R Martin's Fire & Blood, and will tell the story of House Targaryen.

George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Ryan Condal, and Miguel Sapochnik will work alongside side each other as the executive producers.

Although the fantastic news has been announced, no official cast members have been announced just yet.

But last month The Illuminerdi reported that the bosses were looking for the perfect person to play Daemon Targaryen - who is central to George R.R. Martin's 2018 novel - further highlighting that it will focus on the Dance with Dragons.

Speaking about the up and coming series, Casey Bloys said: “The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories.

“We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

The announcement comes after it was revealed that House of the Dragon replaced a previously filmed prequel starring Naomi Watts, which was later scraped in 2019.

It is one of four remaining spin-offs that the TV network have in the works, with the other three on hold indefinitely.

Bloys spoke out about the plans for House of the Dragon in January, explaining that they want to get it out as soon as they can.

He said: "For me for right now, I think getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority.

"Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans. We are all focusing on House of the Dragon."

Actress Naomi Watts previously starred in a pilot for Bloodmoon, the first Thrones prequel to be greenlit, written by Jane Goldman.

Unfortunately, the pilot was not picked up to become a series, with Bloys insisting that they expected this to happen, sharing: "In pilots, sometimes things come together, sometimes they don’t.

"There was a lot more world creation because she set hers 8,000 years before the show, so it required a lot more.

"One of the things about House of Dragons, there is a text, there is a book, so that made it a little bit more of a road map for a series order."

He continued: "I think Jane did a beautiful job, it was a big challenge but there was nothing that I would point to and say: 'Oh, that one element did not work'. Just overall it did not quite gel.

"We purposefully developed multiple projects. We would have been very lucky to do one pilot, have that pilot go and be a success but in development as you know, it takes a lot of tries to get it right - this is no different."

All episodes of Game of Thones are available to stream on NOW TV.
