American Girl, the beloved brand known for helping girls grow up with confidence and character, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mattel, announced the launch of its first historical character in three years, Courtney Moore.

Courtney is a total '80s girl whose big, bright, and bold ideas inspire today's girls to find their inner hero to accomplish great things.

Growing up in 1986, Courtney's story reflects the pop culture of the decade from sky-high hair, neon-colored fashions, music television, and video gaming to major historical moments surrounding women in government and space exploration, as well as larger cultural shifts around blended families and emerging technology.

"Courtney Moore is the best gamer in the arcade. But in the real world, she needs to learn a thing or two before she can unleash her inner hero," the toy company wrote on its site.

Fans can get Courtney in stores on Sept. 25.

LAPD officer wounded during attack inside Harbor division station in San Pedro

A Los Angeles police officer suffered a head injury when he was attacked by an assailant Saturday night inside the Harbor division police station in San Pedro, authorities said.

“Some individual came into the Harbor Station, and when an officer went to speak with him, some type of confrontation occurred where we believe an officer was disarmed,” said LAPD Chief Michel Moore, on his way to the hospital where the officer was being treated.

Moore said the officer suffered an injury to the head, but was “stable and is going to survive.” The exact nature of the injury was unclear, he said.

Moore said other officers reacted and pursued the individual, who fled the station but was apprehended by police soon after. Moore said at least one officer opened fire. It was not immediately clear if there were additional injuries or if the suspect was wounded.

The LAPD said on Twitter that “a significant police incident” at the station had occurred. It then said that there had been an officer shooting.

Mayor Eric Garcetti also tweeted his support for the injured officer. “Sending my best wishes for a quick and full recovery to our @LAPDHQ officer injured in an incident at the Harbor Station tonight. The officer is in stable condition and we’re closely monitoring the situation.”

The shooting comes two weeks after two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were shot while sitting in a patrol vehicle in Compton.

The two deputies survived, but suffered serious injuries. Video showed the gunman fire at them at close range before fleeing, and the deputies exit the vehicle and try to take cover behind a column as they called for backup.

The latest shooting also follows a summer of intense protests over police brutality against Black people, in L.A. and around the country, including large demonstrations where police and protesters have clashed.

Protests have continued in recent days. On Thursday night, protests in Hollywood were interrupted when a large truck and then a Prius drove through the crowd. The driver of the pickup truck hit a woman, sending her flying onto Sunset Boulevard before she was transferred to the hospital.
