Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Villagers who refuse to wear masks are being forced to dig graves for victims of Covid-19 by local authorities in one part of rural Indonesia, in the hopes that a little bit of manual labor and empathy will convince others to do their part to help stop the pandemic.

Three middle aged men and five minors in Cerme district of Gresik Regency, East Java, were given the unique punishment on September 9, authorities said.
Though mask-wearing is mandatory in public throughout Indonesia, there has been a vocal segment of the population that has been reluctant to wear masks and practice social distancing.
A coffin containing a coronavirus victim is buried in Indonesia's East Jakarta City. Experts say the lack of public vigilance has made it more difficult for Indonesian authorities to stymie the spread of the virus, which to date has infected nearly 230,000 people in the country. More than 160,000 of those patients have recovered, while at least 9,100 have died.As cases spiked in recent months, Indonesia's government passed a law in July requiring people to wear masks in public, but left it to local officials to determine punishments for noncompliance. A joint team called the "three pillars" -- which consists of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, Indonesian National Police and local law enforcement -- are in charge of enforcing mask restrictions across the country.Read MoreIn Cerme, the "three pillars" gives those caught not wearing the mask the option of accepting a fine of 150,000 rupiah ($10) or accepting what the government calls "social punishment," according to the district's leader, Suyono.Suyono, who goes by one name, told CNN most people have accepted the social punishment, which often involves push-ups or cleaning. But he hopes options like grave-digging would be educational and show "firsthand the real and serious effect of Covid-19." None of those punished were present when the dead were buried, Suyono said.A man caught not wearing a face mask in public lies in a mock coffin while members of the public and the media take pictures as part of punishment by local authorities and enforced by local police in Jakarta on September 3.Authorities in the capital of Jakarta adopted a similar idea earlier this month. A man there was required to sit in a coffin in public after being caught not wearing a mask. However, it's not clear if these types of penalties have increased mask-wearing in Indonesia. The country has failed to flatten the curve for months and infections are still on the rise -- only the Philippines has recorded more cases in Southeast Asia. Aerial photos show light traffic flow on September 14, the first day of reimplementing large scale social restrictions in Jakarta.
Large-scale social restrictions were put in place in Jakarta on Sunday, the second time authorities have been forced to do so since the pandemic began. With cases still climbing, the city's health infrastructure may be nearing a breaking point. The emergency units in all 20 Jakarta hospitals approved to treat Covid-19 patients are full, officials said Monday.

Young Karens get called out in Ralphs market for not wearing masks

In a video causing a stir on Reddit, a woman at Ralph’s grocery store in Southern California filmed two arrogant anti-masking “Karens.”

The video joins the anti-masking actions in progress. One of the young Karens poses for the camera phone as if it were a joke. However, a Ralph’s employee tells them that if they don’t don a mask, they will not check out.

Later self-identified at the end of the video as Ashley Gibbs, the woman notes their privilege: “White people thinking they are better than everybody else.” The video has garnered more than 1,500 comments since being posted to Reddit’s “Public Freakout” forum this week.

As he follows them around, she provides a warning: “If you have a grandma in the Glendale area, do not come to Ralph’s market, because these ladies think they can do whatever they want.”

“We have Ralph’s workers, working hard, going home to their families.”

The woman asks if she can not record her, a request Gibbs immediately dismisses. But then the woman turns to say: “You’re wearing a mask. If you’re wearing a mask, you should be perfectly fine.”

“I don’t want you to kill a loved one,” replies Gibbs.

The woman, pulling the Herculean strength and vigor of all the anti-mask Karen ancestors, retorts: “I don’t want you to tell me what to do.”

However, Gibbs is about that action and remains undeterred in her quest of the public call-out, letting the woman know that Ralph’s employees don’t make much money.

Then Gibbs digs in with more call-out bars: “You obviously haven’t had much hardship in your life. You just come here and think you can disrespect people. Take your money somewhere else and put your mask over your nose.”

When they thought pulling out a phone and filming her was fair play, she identified herself directly and left them with a message: “And I’m letting you know, you need to put the mask over your fucking nose.”

By the end of her sentence, both women had their masks on in the appropriate fashion.
