Which 49ers are left to suit up against Rams if Sundays game goes as schedule?

Perhaps Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay tempted fate when he described his team as “relatively healthy” to 49ers reporters on Wednesday.

At the time, it sounded as if McVay was being sympathetic to the 49ers’ limited stock of players, and that’s even after the Rams lost their left tackle Andrew Whitworth and leading tackler Micah Kiser in successive games.

Then came two positive COVID-19 tests within the Rams (7-3) that prompted them to cancel Friday’s final practice before Sunday’s scheduled visit by the 49ers (4-6).

The game is on, until further notice.

The available players? Well, the 49ers could be without seven starters for COVID-19 concerns, after having put 26 players on Injured Reserve since training camp. The 49ers also could welcome back several key starters: running back Raheem Mostert, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and cornerback Richard Sherman.

If the 49ers score the upset and renew their playoff life, here is an early projection on who’s available to play (*starter), who’s not and what to watch at each position group:

QUARTERBACK

Who’s available: *Nick Mullens, C.J. Beathard

Who’s not: Jimmy Garoppolo (IR)

What to watch: Mullens is turnover prone when especially attacked from the edge, but the Rams have the capability to penetrate the pocket from anywhere. Mullens has lost his past three starts, and if he continues to underthrow targets while not protecting the ball, Kyle Shanahan probably won’t hesitate long to insert Beathard as an unlikely hero.

RUNNING BACK

Who’s available: *Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson, Jerick McKinnon, Austin Walter

Who’s not: JaMycal Hasty (IR)

What to watch: Mostert’s return from a four-game respite could provide a huge boost, assuming he comes off Injured Reserve. Coleman and Wilson also are options to return from multi-game absences, but likely only one (Coleman) suits up alongside McKinnon. The fifth-ranked Rams run defense is daunting but the 49ers conquered it last meeting by racing to the boundaries, often with short tosses (officially passes) to Deebo Samuel, which the Rams will be better prepared to defend.

WIDE RECEIVER

Who’s available: *Deebo Samuel, *Kendrick Bourne, Richie James Jr., Trent Taylor, River Cracraft

Who’s not: Brandon Aiyuk (C-19)

What to watch: Look for the 49ers to rely on short passes, especially over the middle, where the Rams are without linebacker Micah Kiser. If Samuel’s hamstring cooperates after a month of rehab, his presence is huge. Aiyuk’s second stint on COVID-19 reserve this month is a bummer, and while that’s cost him more practice time, it puts more onus on Bourne, James and Taylor to help find holes in one of the NFL’s hottest secondaries. Maybe it’s time to unveil Kevin White (practice squad) for specialized routes. Related Articles

TIGHT END

Who’s available: *Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner

Who’s not: George Kittle (IR), Daniel Helm (C-19)

What to watch: Well, I guess this is Dwelley’s time to show why he, with 10 catches, merits the 49ers’ Pro Bowl nomination over an injured Kittle, with 37 receptions.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Who’s available: *Justin Skule, *Laken Tomlinson, *Daniel Brunskill, *Tom Compton, *Mike McGlinchey, Colton McKivitz

Who’s not: Trent Williams (C-19), Ben Garland (calf), Weston Richburg (PUP)

What to watch: Williams, who tested positive last week for COVID-19, might get cleared in time to play, but if not, then the 49ers must hope Skule can protect better than he did against the Packers. Although Brunskill and the line neutralized Aaron Donald in October, Donald is complaining that opponents aren’t getting flagged for holding him, so he’ll look to add on his nine sacks and 17 quarterback hits. Donald’s presence overshadows a Rams’ defensive front that is playing exceptional, especially Leonard Floyd (seven sacks).

DEFENSIVE LINE

Who’s available: *Arik Armstead, *Kerry Hyder Jr., *Kentavius Street, *Kevin Givens, Dion Jordan

Who’s not: Javon Kinlaw (C-19), D.J. Jones (C-19), Jordan Willis (C-19), Dee Ford (back), Ronald Blair (PUP), Nick Bosa (IR), Solomon Thomas (IR), Ziggy Ansah (IR)

What to watch: Rather than have Goff use a quick trigger like his 51-pass barrage at Tampa Bay on Monday night, the Rams might want him to take more time and attack down field. Otherwise, Goff still will take his timely shots after chipping away at underneath routes. With the 49ers’ interior in flux, the Rams may attack more than usual on the ground with Darrell Henderson, Malcolm Brown and surging rookie Cam Akers.

LINEBACKERS

Who’s available: *Fred Warner, *Marcell Harris

Who’s not: Dre Greenlaw (illness), Azeez Al-Shaair (illness), Joe Walker (C-19) Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring), Mark Nzeocha (IR).

What to watch: COVID-19 precautions kept Greenlaw and Al-Shaair out of Thanksgiving practice and illuminated just how thin this unit is. Harris’ conversion from safety to dime linebacker was unveiled last game, and he’s practiced with the linebackers this week, so he could cover for a short-handed corps. Jonas Griffith (6-4, 250 pounds) also could pack a punch as a practice-squad callup.

CORNERBACKS

Who’s available: *Richard Sherman, *Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley, Jamar Taylor, Dontae Johnson, Ken Webster, Ahkello Witherspoon

Who’s not: K’Waun Williams (ankle)

What to watch: Sherman takes aim at his first game since the season opener, and Verrett is the likely other starting cornerback. Taylor has fared well as the slot cornerback in place of an injured Williams but Moseley also could see a lot of action in the Rams’ multiple-receiver sets. Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods will be looking to avenge sub-par outings against the 49ers, who got an end zone interception from Verrett last meeting. Tight end Tyler Higbee (elbow) could be out.

SAFETIES

Who’s available: *Jimmie Ward, *Tarvarius Moore, Chris Edwards

Who’s not: Jaquiski Tartt (IR)

The Ward-Moore tandem is encouraging, and, if one gets hurt, Harris likely would revert to safety if he’s not needed at linebacker. Edwards signed Tuesday after playing the past three years in Canada.
