Fresh off helping to successfully convince Gov. Gavin Newsom to give outdoor sports the green light, De La Salle football coach Justin Alumbaugh now has a team to get ready.

And he’ll do so without two of his star seniors: Sacramento State-bound quarterback Dorian Hale and Cal-bound defensive back Lu-Magia Hearns, who have both chosen not to play this spring in order to get ready for their freshmen college seasons.

“Both of those guys are still absolutely members of the team,” Alumbaugh said Tuesday. “But Dorian is competing for the starting quarterback job at Sac State in a couple of months and Lu is competing at Cal in a couple of months.

“Love both those kids. Completely support them. Completely understand. I am glad that they’re still awesome members of our team.”

Luke Dermon will take over from Hale at quarterback. The junior also is a standout lacrosse player.

“He’s very good,” Alumbaugh said. “He’s a good athlete. He can run. He can throw. Obviously, I’d love to coach Dorian for the fourth year. But we’re not handing the ball off to a schlub.”

Dermon will make his varsity starting debut March 13 when De La Salle opens the season at home with a non-league matchup against St. Mary’s of Stockton. The Spartans will play another non-league game on April 3 at home against Jesuit of Carmichael.

DLS’s remaining four games are against East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division opponents: March 20 vs. Monte Vista, March 27 vs. San Ramon Valley, April 10 at California and April 17 at Clayton Valley Charter.

The Spartans planned to hold their first official practice Tuesday. Their first practice in pads is scheduled for Friday. By starting Tuesday, DLS will get the mandatory 14 practices in to play on March 13. Related Articles

“Now all the wheels got to go in motion,” Alumbaugh said. “Getting kids in pads. Juggling with multiple sports. Getting schedules ready for kids. Trying to find field space with multiple sports. But you know what? These are way better problems than a week ago.

“Completely different energy to everything that we’re doing. With the coaches, we were planning practice schedules, plays. The kids are out there smiling and pushing each other. Not just going through the motion for whatever reason. They’re out there working. It’s a completely different feeling.”
