Chelsea stunned Atletico Madrid in the Champions League thanks to an incredible bicycle kick goal from striker Olivier Giroud

Chelsea fans are on cloud nine right now thanks to an unbelievable result against La Liga powerhouse Atletico Mardid on Tuesday in the Champions League Round of 16. That’s because striker Olivier Giroud has given the team a massive victory thanks to one of the goals of the tournament.

With the two sides tied at 0-0 in the second half, Giroud put the English Premier League club in front thanks to a goal in the 68th minute. This wasn’t any kind of goal, though, as the French star is stealing headlines thanks to his brilliant bicycle kick finish.

Olivier Giroud’s bicycle kick goal for Chelsea FC will be shown for years and years

That’s one of the best goals we’ll see in the Champions League this year. Fans are comparing it to Ronaldo’s unreal goal for Real Madrid against Juventus back in 2018, which left his supporters across the world speechless.

For Giroud, he wasn’t able to celebrate his goal in style at the start, as it was ruled offsides by the linesman. However, VAR came to the rescue and it was determined that the play was legal and Giroud’s world-class goal was given.

This is a huge result for Chelsea, as the club is hoping to move on to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Tuesday’s 1-0 victory of course is massive, as Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side was considered the favorite to move on between the two.

Now, Atletico Madrid has some work to do in the second leg if they want to advance to the next round. Chelsea is now in the driver’s seat and they have Giroud to thank for that. What a goal.

Active cases fall steadily in Portugal in the last month thanks to the lockdown since January

Active covid-19 cases today added their 26th consecutive day of falls in Portugal, where there are currently 72,037 people with the virus, the lowest number since the end of December and far from the peak of more than 180,000 that reached in January.

According to the bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS), this Friday 1,027 infections and 58 deaths were reported, in line with this week’s numbers, which reflect a stabilization of the curve after the severe third wave that hit the country.

Portugal, with just over 10 million inhabitants, adds 802,773 positive cases and 16,243 deaths from coronavirus since the pandemic broke out.

He also continued the relief in hospitals, where there are 2,404 patients admitted with covid-19 (209 less than yesterday), of which 522 are in intensive care (14 less).

Despite the drop in figures, Portugal has no plans to lift the lockdown which has been in force in the country since January 15 and yesterday, Thursday, it approved a new 15-day extension of the state of emergency.

The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, even defended that the confinement should be kept until Easter for “a matter of prudence and security.”

In addition to the confinement, this Friday they were extended until March 16 controls at the land border with Spain, which can only be crossed through authorized crossings in exceptional cases, such as transnational workers or freight transport.

The controls were imposed on January 31 and until February 24, 279,578 citizens and 251,750 vehicles passed through them, according to data sent today by the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Administration.

Of that total, 1,904 citizens were denied passage that they were not allowed to cross.

The passage with the most traffic was Valença do Minho-Tui, in the north, through which more than 110,000 people passed.
