MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida reported less than ten-thousand new coronavirus cases on Sunday for the first time in days. However, a high percentage of those new cases are coming from South Florida and health experts are warning about a winter surge in the weeks and months to come “This is not just the worst public health event. This is the worst event that this country will face, not just from a public health side,” said Dr. Deborah Birx with the White House COVID task force. “Every state needs to be critically informing their state population that the gatherings that we saw in Thanksgiving will lead to a surge. It will happen this week and next week. And we can not go into the holiday season, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa with this same kind of attitude, that those, those gatherings don’t apply to me. They apply to everybody.” “We won’t have a...

Derek Carr threw a beautiful pass, allowing rookie Henry Ruggs to run underneath it for a game-winning touchdown On a third down with less than 20 seconds remaining, the Raiders threw up a prayer. It was answered in the form of a Ruggs touchdown, as the speedster ran right past the Jets secondary for a last-second touchdown that keeps them in the AFC playoff picture. The absence of defending F1 champion Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir GP gave the likes of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen a chance to claim pole position. Especially for Verstappen, whose work this season has mostly gotten restricted to challenging or splitting the Mercedes’ drivers. For all of his best efforts and intention, pole position remained out of reach for the Red Bull No.33 on this occasion as well. Such was the pace from Bottas and Russell that he fell short of pole by just 0.05 seconds. Nevertheless, Max has revealed he knew claiming pole was always going to be difficult at the track. However, he also thinks that P3 is not necessarily a bad position to start the Sakhir Grand Prix in. Max Verstappen thinks P3 is good for Red Bull on the Sakhir GP track Speaking in the post-qualifying press conference, Verstappen said, “After that first run I...

LeBron James has given an update to all of the rumors swirling that he will be changing his number this season.  Who knew the biggest drama of the Los Angeles Lakers offseason wouldn’t involve a player signing or a trade, rather a jersey number. It’s been rumored for sometime now that LeBron James will be swapping out his No. 23 to return to wearing the No. 6 he donned during his years with the Miami Heat. Beyond that, like a true passing of the torch, LeBron is expected to give the number to Anthony Davis in a move that is so transparently on-the-nose you can’t help but appreciate it’s gusto. The change didn’t happen last season though, and it now appears we’ll have to continue to wait. LeBron set the record straight on his Instagram stories, noting that the number change won’t happen this year but he’s still hoping it...

But with his side trailing 1-0 at the break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to Fernandes to change the game. And he did exactly that with his creative spark proving critical. Midway through the second half, Dean Henderson's long punt upfield - which actually went out of play - was collected by the Portuguese sensation. He turned inside and teed up Paul Pogba who fired in an excellent equaliser from range. Mason Greenwood's touch and finish turned the...

Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith is putting on a clinic vs. LSU.What DeVonta Smith did vs. the LSU Tigers in the first half was utterly sensational. Smith had seven catches for 219 yards and three touchdowns in the first two quarters vs. the Bayou Bengals. New York Yankees News/Rumors: Winter Meetings this week, will the Yankees make big moves? By: William Parlee December 5, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Yankees and the other 29 MLB teams will participate in the baseball Winter Meetings this week. The meetings will be from December 6-10. Originally scheduled to be held at the Omni Dallas Hotel in Texas. The coronavirus has caused them to be canceled and held virtually and remotely. The winter meetings are often packed with acquisitions and trades. How much activity will take place this year is anyone’s guess. It could be normal, but it could also be much slower than in previous years because the in-person meetings were canceled. The coronavirus and its recent surge are only making the financial condition of all teams less clear. Owners don’t know what the 2021 season will look like. Will it be...

Patrick Mahomes. AP Photo/Jason Behnken Through 12 weeks of the NFL season, there's never been a more chaotic year to bet. Last week, our picks went a dismal 6-10 against the spread, thanks in part to disappointing performances from the Cardinals and Raiders. This week we're looking to bounce back, picking every game against the spread with hopes of finding some winners. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Week 12 of the NFL season was one of the strangest the league has ever seen. The Broncos had to play a game without a quarterback. The Ravens and Steelers moved their game around three times before finally playing on a Wednesday. The Browns didn't completely fall apart in the fourth quarter and were able to hold on to win a game. Strange stuff, all around. It was admittedly a rough one for our picks, which went 6-10 against...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — There is a tentative plan in place for winter sports in Minnesota. On Thursday, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) voted unanimously to continue youth sports after Gov. Tim Walz’s executive order expires on Dec. 18. If the order expires, the winter season will start on Dec. 21. If Gov. Walz extends his shutdown, the season will start on Jan. 4. Student-athletes want to make sure they get to play as early as possible, so many took to social media to send a message to their fellow Minnesotans, including Ryan Harvey, a junior on the Wayzata High School basketball team. “We’re asking the people to wear masks and social distance,” Harvey said. He’s not alone in that plea. Several Minnesota winter sports teams took to Twitter Thursday to ask everyone to #MaskUpMN, including the Winona boys Hockey team, Centennial basketball team, Mayo-Rochester girls basketball team...
RENTON, Wash. — Josh Gordon was conditionally reinstated by the NFL on Thursday and can begin the process of joining the Seattle Seahawks’ roster as early as Friday. Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Gordon after nearly a one-year suspension following his latest off-field transgression for violations of the league’s substance abuse policies. Gordon was suspended in December 2019 for violating the league’s drug policy. He tested positive for performance enhancers and “substances of abuse,” the league said in a statement at the time. It was the eighth time overall Gordon had been suspended by either his team or the NFL, including six times since 2013, mostly for violating the league’s policies on banned substances. But his time in Seattle last season was mostly positive and the Seahawks signed Gordon in September knowing there would be no guarantee that Gordon would be reinstated during the 2020 season. The league said Gordon can...

"Dancing with the Stars" viewers were blindsided back in July when it was revealed that longtime host Tom Bergeron and his co-host Erin Andrews would not be returning for Season 29. Now, Bergeron has implied he has no plans to ever return to the ABC dance competition show. In an interview for TV Guide magazine this week, the veteran broadcaster, 65, touched on his current life away from the spotlight, along with a revelation that may upset his loyal fan base. "When people say, 'I'm not gonna watch until you're back,' I say, 'Well, there's really no 'until' here. This train has left the station," Bergeron told the outlet. It is not clear if there were ever any discussions between him and ABC for a potential return. He added that while he can "appreciate" fans' interest in the possibility, he doesn't "hold it against anyone" for still tuning in. 'DANCING WITH THE STARS' CROWNS SEASON...
BOSTON (CBS) — New England’s injury report has been pretty bountiful each week this season, but quarterback Cam Newton was never among those injured players. That changed on Wednesday. Newton made his injury report debut on Wednesday as the Patriots gear up for a Week 13 visit to the L.A. Chargers. The quarterback was limited at Wednesday’s practice with an abdomen injury. Newton took some big hits throughout New England’s 20-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. It was one of his worst games of the season, as the QB completed nine of his 18 passes for just 84 yards and two interceptions. He also ran the ball nine times for 46 yards, and was sacked three times by Arizona. Newton was one of 10 Patriots players limited at Wednesday’s practice: LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (groin) DT Adam Butler (shoulder) DT Byron Cowart (back) S Kyle Dugger (toe) K...

Whether you want to dim or dazzle with your holiday lights, a smart plug can help. The simplest way to control your holiday lights is with a smart plug. They’re very affordable, and you can set them to turn on and off at sunset and sunrise. Smart plugs cost $15 to $65. You’ll want one that’s WiFi capable. To set it up, just plug it into a wall outlet and plug your lights into the device. Then you can control your lights from your smartphone. CR also looked at several smart light kits that can change colors, create festive patterns and effects, and set your lights to music. But they require some tech skill, and they cost more than regular lights, at about $60 to $200. They’re a lot of fun and provide that whimsical effect that people could use right now. There can be some hiccups, though. But the...
The unseasonably sunny, dry weather across Northern California in recent weeks has provided a great opportunity for people to get outside, exercise and work in their yards. But meteorologists are warning that it may be increasing wildfire risk again in the coming days, even after many Bay Area residents had assumed that fire season was over. On Wednesday, the National Weather Service said computer models are showing the potential for gusty offshore winds starting Sunday and extending into Monday across the Bay Area hills, an event the agency’s forecast discussion said “would likely result in critical fire weather conditions.” Forecasters said a trough of low pressure developing in the Great Basin area of Nevada could generate strong winds blowing dry, warm air from the land toward the ocean. Such conditions are known as Diablo winds in the Northern California and Santa Ana winds in Southern California, and significantly raise the risk...
It’s been 538 days since Stephen Curry played in a game of consequence. The last time he stepped onto a court, in March, it was to test his surgically-repaired hand in a meaningless game after the Warriors were already eliminated from the playoffs. Even at the start of the 2019-20 season, there was an understanding that the Warriors were embarking on a rebuilding year. It hasn’t been since Game 6 of the 2019 Finals, 538 days ago, that what Curry did impacted the NBA. And he knows it. “Watching the bubble was weird,” Curry said in his media day news conference Wednesday. “It was nice to be a fan for a little bit, but I definitely want to be playing competitive basketball and in games that matter.” During the nine months since the end of last season, Curry celebrated his 32nd birthday, interviewed the country’s lead expert...

Doug Pederson may be amenable to adding one in 2021. The Eagles HC said he is open to giving up play-calling responsibilities. However, nothing is imminent on a play-caller change this season, Tim McManus of ESPN.com notes. Although the Eagles have seen several of their skill-position players return to action, they used their 10th offensive line configuration to open Monday night’s game. Nothing has worked particularly well for Philly as of late; the Eagles rank 28th in total offense. These issues have upset owner Jeffery Lurie, whom McManus adds skipped the Eagles’ Week 11...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA had one of the worst defenses in the nation during Chip Kelly’s first two seasons, a huge reason the Bruins won only seven games during that time. But UCLA is 2-2 this season because of its defense, which is making a case for being one of the most improved units in the nation. Going into Saturday’s game at Arizona State, the Bruins lead the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss while allowing nearly two yards less per play. “The thing that we talked about in the offseason was getting our best athletes on the field. We thought we had some really good athletes at all three levels. And that’s what we are trying to do,” Kelly said. Personnel hasn’t been the only change, though. Jerry Azzinaro remained as the coordinator but Kelly hired Brian Norwood from Navy to coach defensive backs and Johnny...
The Oakland A’s agreed to terms on one-year deals with right-handed reliever Burch Smith and utility player Chad Pinder, avoiding arbitration, the team announced Tuesday. Smith is in his first year of arbitration and Pinder in his second. Pinder’s deal is reportedly worth $2.275 million. While Smith’s is worth $705,000. Smith, acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants in February, dealt 10.1 scoreless innings and flashed one of the team’s best fastballs in his debut with the A’s. A forearm strain sustained in August against the team that traded him sidelined Smith for the remainder of the season, but he should return as one of the team’s strongest relievers in an age where a deep bullpen is crucial for teams’ success. Pinder and Smith are two of the 10 arbitration eligible players on the A’s roster, with a deadline to tender contracts looming Wednesday. Pinder...

With packages rolling in from Cyber Monday sales and holiday shopping underway, Pittsburgh Police say it’s “important to be aware of thieves looking for easy items to steal.” Pittsburgh Police say you should try to schedule package deliveries when you’re home. If not, see if you can request your packages be held at the delivery service facility for you to pick up. They also recommend considering installing surveillance cameras, which may be a “theft deterrent.” Cameras can also help detectives if a porch pirate targets you. You could also use the address of someone else who is home more frequently or lives in a secluded area. And, police say if you see someone stealing a package, write down the time and date...

This content is provided by JSSA. The holidays are a great time to celebrate and catch up with family. This year may look different than past years but conversations with loved ones remains a constant. We often talk about politics, weather, past achievements, future goals, and the state of our health. It is rare, however, that we speak about what we would want if a health care crisis were to occur. Having these conversations is important and the best time to do it is before an emergency. Planning in advance of a health care emergency is called advance care planning. Advance care planning can be a gift to your loved ones. Talking about your health care wishes and values allows those who are most important to you to hear directly what you would want if you were unable to speak for yourself. Sharing how you define quality of life, what you...

The e-commerce giant said in a blog post that customers have been shopping early for gifts and seasonal items for their loved ones. It comes as many retailers reliant on physical stores have been struggling to survive. Popular purchases so far include the new Echo Dot, Barack Obama's "A Promised Land" book, and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Brush, Amazon said. Self-care, "nesting at home", and "cozy comfort" were among the most popular trends during the period. "In a holiday season unlike any other, it's clear that customers still want great deals on gifts for their loved ones or a little something extra for themselves,...

The Nets start arguably the most highly anticipated — and clearly the strangest — training camp in their history Tuesday. With Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the mix, championship aspirations in mind, and the specter of COVID-19 staring them in the face, the Nets will return to HSS Training Center to begin preparing for the Dec. 22 season opener. The returns of Durant and Irving from injury — Durant’s torn Achilles in the 2019 NBA Finals, and Irving’s season-ending shoulder surgery — are expected to make the Nets a contender for the NBA Finals.
