CNN anchor Jake Tapper urged Fox News to report that there is no "credible evidence" of widespread voter fraud as President Trump and his allies claim the contest was rigged. He made the request to his competitor and the Murdoch family on Friday, noting "I don’t normally talk about any competing network," after Democratic nominee Joe Biden took the lead over President Trump in Pennsylvania, putting himon the doorstep of victory in the election. "The Murdochs, and the people at Fox [News], have an obligation to put their country above their profits," he said. "It is very important that people make it very clear that this election, there is no credible evidence that we have seen of widespread fraud, by all accounts Joe Biden is on the precipice of becoming the next president fair and square, and people who have the privilege of sitting in seats like we’re sitting in...
With parts of California still smoldering, the state Department of Insurance has issued a one-year moratorium prohibiting insurers from canceling or not renewing about 2.1 million homeowners’ policies, the second consecutive year policyholders in or near fire-stricken areas have gotten a temporary measure of relief. The move will temporarily protect homeowner policies in select ZIP Codes from Siskiyou to San Diego counties. “Losing your insurance should be the last thing on someone’s mind after surviving a devastating fire,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara in a statement Thursday. “My action gives millions of Californians breathing room and hits the pause button on insurance non-renewals while we take additional steps to expand our competitive market.” Repeated, destructive wind-driven fires in forest and foothill communities have been bleeding billions of dollars of insurance provider profits in recent years, leading them to spike premiums or flee the marketplace altogether. In 2020 alone, wildfires...
Tucker Carlson has urged America's liberal media outlets not to sweep concerns of voter fraud 'under the rug' by prematurely calling the election for Joe Biden. Yesterday several TV networks cut away from Donald Trump's address from the White House after he started repeated so-far unsubstantiated claims of electoral malpractice. Yet Carlson suggested these broadcasters are duty-bound to cover such accusations and not airbrush them from the election. Most of the program's 62.8 million recipients are age 65 or older, making them more likely to develop complications from the virus or succumb to it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recent agency data shows that of 217,000-plus Covid deaths in the U.S., nearly 172,000 were in that age group. That risk was explored in a recent survey of about 2,100 Medicare beneficiaries by eHealth, an online insurance marketplace. When it came to policy issues (e.g., whether the government is doing enough to lower prescription drug costs), viewpoints were most often split along political party lines. Respondents generally showed more agreement about trying to remain healthy during the pandemic.VIDEO4:5004:50Expect U.S. Covid cases to accelerate in coming weeks: Former FDA chief Dr. GottliebSquawk BoxFor example, a majority of...

Viewership of election night news coverage was down 20 percent this year from 2016, with many voters appearing to tune out after the long and bitter campaign. Nielsen figures showed that roughly 56.9 million people watched this year's prime-time coverage across 21 networks, down from 71.4 million people watching in 2016, when Donald Trump upset Democrat Hillary Clinton. This year's drawn-out presidential election returns may have proven frustrating for viewers, with the winner still unclear more than a day after polls closed. The TV ratings do not include viewership via online platforms, which have jumped in popularity. Conservative podcaster and BlazeTV host Steven Crowder aired a live election night show on Tuesday, and his coverage garnered millions of views, competing with all the major news networks. The show was broadcast on YouTube and obtained more than 8.2 million views less than 24 hours after election day. A second "Louder with Crowder" show broadcasted on Wednesday had already garnered more than 4.1 million views just hours after he finished live-streaming it. Crowder's impressive viewership competed with that of Fox News, the ratings behemoth, which garnered 14 million viewers from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday night. CNN averaged only 9 million viewers in the same time frame, closer to Crowder's viewership. Some connected the stunning ratings accomplishment with a frustration from Trump supporters in seeking news outlets that were fair to the president and his policies. In one episode that...

PBS reporter Miles O’Brien had a close encounter with a forklift loaded with ballots in Fulton County, Georgia live on the air during PBS Newshour’s Election Night coverage. After finishing a panel segment with The Washington Post‘s Robert Costa and The 19th’s Errin Haines, anchor Judy Woodruff tossed to O’Brien for a late-night check on the hotly-contested Georgia presidential race — which, as of this writing, is expected to be resolved by Wednesday evening. “He has been at the Fulton County, Georgia, vote-counting place,” Woodruff said, and asked O’Brien for an update as the vote-counting activity buzzed behind him. But as O’Brien described the “huge backlog” of mail-in votes and the Herculean efforts being made to count them, a loud honk came from offscreen and O’Brien had to interrupt his report to let a ballot-laden forklift ride through the shot. Pressed right up next to the camera, O’Brien coolly...

If President Trump wins the 2020 presidential election, the media’s “unrelenting negative coverage” of the commander in chief will be to blame, constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley said on Wednesday. “Months ago, I wrote that if Donald Trump prevails in this election, the people most responsible would be the media,” Turley told “Fox & Friends.” “We had this just unrelenting level of negative coverage from the media. By Bernard J. Wolfson | California Healthline California’s annual health insurance enrollment season for individuals and families kicks off this week against a dramatic backdrop: the presidential election; a pandemic raging out of control in much of the U.S.; and, on Nov. 10, a Supreme Court hearing of a case that could end the Affordable Care Act and strand millions without coverage. The massive unemployment caused by the pandemic has already stripped employer-based health insurance from millions nationwide and induced severe financial anxiety as families struggle to pay rent and buy food. One question hovering over enrollment for 2021 health plans is whether the large-scale loss of medical coverage will generate a surge of sign-ups, or if more pressing financial worries for many people will push insurance lower down their priority list. “People have so many things to deal with: They’ve lost jobs, they’ve lost a lot of income, and...

Election night in America has begun and ballots across the country will be tallied tonight to determine who will win the presidency after one of the most contentious campaigns in recent history. It’s increasingly unlikely, however, that the country will know the winner of the 2020 contest between President Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden by the end of the night because of the millions of voters who have already cast their ballots by mail and the expected delays in counting and reporting those results. Because more Republicans than Democrats are likely to vote in person, the early tallies could show huge gains for Trump, but that advantage could dwindle as states count their mail-in and absentee ballots. It all makes for an evening in which established news outlets will be hard-pressed to declare a winner, and that will mean all eyes will be watching the crucial battleground states...

Gayle King was in training for heated election coverage and shared with fans that she reached her fighting weight for the main event. “Just completed my five day soup fast and the results are in!” the CBS anchor captioned a pic on social media Tuesday. “Trying to get into mustard yellow dress for Elex night coverage tonight. Praying to sweet black baby Jesus it now fits.” The image revealed that King went from 172 pounds to 165. She cautioned fans, “PS plz withhold all the negative comments about my jacked up feet. Eight Republican U.S. senators are pressing Heath and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to correct “guidance” regarding insurance requirements with respect to testing for the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The senators, Rick Scott of Florida, Joni Ernst of Iowa, David Perdue of Georgia, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Martha McSally of Arizona, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota wrote Azar on Oct. 30 saying a document issued June 23 by the federal departments of Labor, Treasury, and HHS has caused “confusion” as to what is covered. “Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that changes made in a recent triagency guidance published on June 23, 2020, have created some confusion regarding coverage requirements for COVID-19 testing,” they wrote. “In recent weeks, we have been made aware of increasing coverage denials from health plans for COVID-19 testing, particularly for asymptomatic individuals.” The...

Security fencing surrounds the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, on election day. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh) For months, security experts have been warning that there would likely be a lot of destructive postelection violence. Hedging on where this violence would actually come from, they’ve just said it could be from far-right or far-left extremists depending on the outcome of the 2020 election. I’ve been wary of buying into that, because though there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that could happen, I just haven’t seen more evidence than there has been in previous contested elections. Part of the reason is because people are too tired to do it. Remember, this is the year of COVID-19. We’re grieving the deaths of more than 230,000 Americans. The isolation necessary to survive has been exhausting. We’re also grieving the death of George Floyd and numerous other African American victims of systemic racism...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Uninsured Nevada residents can enroll for health coverage on its state-operated exchange Nevada Health Link starting this week. Insurance plans are available to those who do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare or do not have employer-sponsored insurance. The enrollment period began on Sunday and will continue through Jan. 15. There are 50 plans on the exchange, which is nearly double the amount of options there were in 2019, said Heather Korbulic, executive director of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange. Every plan covers coronavirus-related testing and diagnoses. The plans all cover the 10 essential health benefits, including coverage of pre-existing conditions as mandated by the Affordable Care Act, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Dental and vision plans are also available. There are currently 77,000 residents that are purchasing insurance on the exchange. Those who enroll by the end of the calendar year will have health...
While appearing on Fox News, President Trump bashed the network’s coverage of the election, ripping its broadcast of speeches from former President Barack Obama in the closing days of the campaign. “Actually, Fox puts him on more than anybody else, which is sort of shocking to me because Fox has changed a lot,” Trump told Fox & Friends on Tuesday. "Somebody said, ‘What’s the biggest difference between this and four years ago?’ I say, ‘Fox.’ It’s much different.” Brian Kilmeade pushed back on the president’s assertion, arguing that the network was trying to present both sides of the argument to viewers, while Steve Doocy cited the network’s former slogan, “We report, you decide.” .@realDonaldTrump complains on @foxandfriends about the network covering @JoeBiden's campaign: "In the old days, they wouldn't put Sleepy Joe Biden on every time he opened his mouth. NBC News correspondent Mike Memoli, known as the "Biden whisperer," said the network will be meticulous when it comes to explaining "projections versus predictions versus hunches" during election night coverage. Memoli will be part of MSNBC's coverage Tuesday night, which several commentators believe could extend beyond election night and possibly into the weekend with the counting and processing of mail-in ballots potentially slowing the process, particularly in key battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. "We have a lot of conversations around reporting results responsibly, what projections versus predictions versus hunches mean, and trying to be explicit about what we do know and what we don't know when we're talking about results and not going any further than we actually know," Memoli told The Hill in an interview. Cable news networks are expected to easily eclipse viewership numbers from 2016, when more than 31 million viewers tuned in during primetime that year, a...

By Helen Coster (Reuters) - U.S. television news networks are preparing for an election night like no other, as a divided nation chooses the next president amid a global pandemic, with more voters casting their ballots early and by mail than ever before. In this year’s contest between Republican U.S. President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democrat, TV networks are facing heightened pressure to report election results accurately and without unwarranted speculation. Among the challenges facing the nation - and the networks - are a president stoking fears of ballot fraud, a deeply divided electorate and the specter of a prolonged vote count, which raises the potential for protests, violence and lawsuits. This will be the first presidential election in which the major TV networks will get data from different providers, raising the potential for divergent perspectives on election night returns. Fox Corp’s Fox News and...

Reporters for Reuters covering the elections in the U.S. will have protective gear in anticipation of protests after several incidents in which journalists were targeted during summer demonstrations.  Stephen Adler, the editor-in-chief of the global news service that employs 2,500 journalists, told the Press Gazette that his reporters were supplied with flak vests, helmets and gas masks, as well as COVID-19 personal protective equipment including N95 masks, the newspaper reported.  “Our concern about the safety of journalists in the U.S. is unprecedentedly high,” Adler said. "My own observation, both here and around the world, is that wearing that big ‘PRESS’ on your chest is no longer as much of a protection as it might once have been. "Sometimes the press are targets, or sometimes just the fact that they're press is simply ignored," he added.  Dozens of journalists were injured amid summer protests in the U.S. that turned violent. The paper cited two Reuters...
The coronavirus pandemic has brought health care to the forefront of the 2020 presidential election. While both President Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden broadly support reducing health care costs, they sharply disagree over how to address the coronavirus pandemic, slash prescription-drug prices, protect coverage for individuals with preexisting conditions and lower insurance premiums.  Trump has backed a lawsuit to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the landmark health care law also known as ObamaCare, and repeatedly pledged to nominate Supreme Court justices who would rule against it.  Biden, meanwhile, has laid out a plan to expand the ACA by adding a public option that's open to all Americans but preserves the option for individuals to keep their private insurance. CLAWING BACK VOTES: 7 STATES ALLOW VOTERS TO RESUBMIT BALLOTS The Supreme Court is slated to hear arguments on the latest legal challenge to the decades-old law on Nov. 10; if the court does strike down the law, the president and...
(CNN)The Trump administration took another step to weaken the Affordable Care Act with Election Day looming, approving Georgia's controversial request to make fundamental changes to its Obamacare exchange. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Sunday gave the state permission to stop using the federal exchange, Healthcare.gov, for enrollment in the individual market and shift to a private sector Georgia Access Model, starting in 2023.Supreme Court threat looms over Obamacare open enrollmentState officials argue that the move will give residents access to a broader array of options from web brokers, health insurance companies and agents -- which will have a greater incentive to enroll consumers in coverage. They estimate the waiver will lower premiums and increase enrollment by 25,000 people.Advocates, however, fear that it could shift healthier people to less comprehensive, non-Obamacare plans and leave those with pre-existing conditions facing higher premiums for Affordable Care Act policies. Plus, consumers could...

Tuesday is Election Day but it’s increasingly unlikely that the country will know the winner of the 2020 contest between President Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden by the end of the night because of the millions of voters who have already cast their ballots by mail and the expected delays in counting and reporting those results. Because more Republicans than Democrats are likely to vote in person, the early tallies could show huge gains for Trump, but that advantage could dwindle as states count their mail-in and absentee ballots. It all makes for an evening in which established news outlets will be hard-pressed to declare a winner, and that will mean all eyes will be watching the crucial battleground states to provide key signs as to the outcome. Here’s how to watch: What are the critical battleground states? Arizona, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Iowa and Georgia....
By SUDHIN THANAWALA, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — The Trump administration has approved Georgia's plan to overhaul how state residents buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that federal officials on Sunday signed off on Gov. Brian Kemp's proposal to offer federally subsidized health insurance through private brokers instead of the HealthCare.gov website. The move was expected after CMS Administrator Seema Verma said during a visit to the state last month that approval was imminent. “Today’s approval of the state’s waiver will usher in a groundswell of healthcare innovation that will deliver lower costs, better care, and more choice to Georgians in the individual market,” Verma said in a statement. Georgia would be the first state where residents would buy insurance directly from brokers or insurers on sites where they would be able to compare plans that meet the requirements of...
