A recent study showed the rate of species extinctions speeding up. Our deforestation, carbon emissions and development have destroyed the habitat, ecosystems and living conditions for thousands of species of wildlife, aquatic life, plants and trees. They just disappear.  The last regal fritillary butterfly, the last wood turtle, the last rusty-patched bumble bee — most of us wouldn’t recognize them, but they may no longer exist in the near future.  What’s eating my plant? These are striking caterpillars feasting on parsely. They become black swallowtail butterflies. (Photo by P. Doan) The numbers of beloved monarch butterflies have diminished so steeply that they, too, have been considered for endangered species status. Nearly 400 species of North American birds may not survive our rapidly changing climate. Native bee numbers have shrunk and the insect apocalypse has been in the headlines as scientists sound the alarm about population declines. The world is in free...
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Some states are now allowing public pools to reopen, but many people dove into buying pools for their homes during stay-at-home orders. The rush of orders for backyard pools when the pandemic hit led to backlog. The Donohoe family in New York got a new pool finished just in time for the hot weather. Anne Donohoe says the pool is “totally saving us this summer.” Christopher Lombardo from Allstar Swimming Pools in New York says the demand continues. “We get about, I would say about 30 to 40 calls every day,” he says. In Massachusetts, Easton Pool & Spa has seen business explode. Company owner Dave Hobaica says, “A lot of people are really hurting out there, but we’re in a, just happen to be in a sweet spot right now.” With vacation plans on pause and many summer camps closed, parents are looking for ways to...

The final game of the original agreement is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Under the terms of the extension, Pitt will travel to face the Mountaineers in the 2021-22 season, with West Virginia visiting the Petersen Events Center...

The woman suffered a bite wound to a leg and scratches to an arm and a leg, according to Captain Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. She was treated at a hospital, he said. Fish and Wildlife took samples from the bite wound and are looking for the bear which was described as light-colored and weighing about 125 pounds. Foy said it would be a juvenile. If found and identified by DNA as the animal who bit the victim, he said the bear will be euthanized. “Once an animal starts to attack and bite a human being, they view humans as prey,”  Foy said. It’s possible the bear in the Sierra Madre case saw the person as potential prey, he added....
