Dubai, United Arab Emirates — Iran has begun construction on a site at its underground nuclear facility at Fordo amid tensions with the U.S. over its atomic program, satellite photos obtained Friday by The Associated Press show. Iran has not publicly acknowledged any new construction at Fordo, whose discovery by the West in 2009 came in an earlier round of brinkmanship before world powers struck the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran.   While the purpose of the building remains unclear, any work at Fordo likely will trigger new concern in the waning days of the Trump administration before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. Already, Iran is building at its Natanz nuclear facility after a mysterious explosion in July there that Tehran described as a sabotage attack. Global nuclear agency chief says risks increased under Trump "Any changes at this site will be carefully watched as a sign of where...

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Researchers looking for an elusive species of beaked whale said Wednesday they think they have found another new, previously unknown species off Mexico’s western Pacific coast. Dr. Jay Barlow, a senior fisheries scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Wednesday the beaked whales both look and sound different from the approximately 23 other known species. The team was sailing with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in mid-November, in hopes of identifying the source of an unidentified acoustic signal. That signal had been associated by other researchers with Perrin’s beaked whale, a species that has only been seen when dead individuals wash up on shore. Suddenly three of the new beaked whales actually swam up near the Sea Shepherd ship and were filmed and recorded. Barlow said he is confident they were not Perrin’s beaked whales. Barlow said that “we saw something...

(CNN)Pain may not be desirable, but it's essential for survival. An effective and sophisticated defense mechanism, pain is our body's way of telling us that something's wrong and that we should take immediate action to avoid injury.Skin -- the body's largest organ -- is constantly monitoring for pain. It can trigger pain-avoiding actions automatically through reflexes, for example when we touch something dangerously hot. Now, researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have created an artificial skin that mimics this mechanism and reacts to pain stimuli.Made of silicone rubber, it has the texture of real skin and is also "very similar to skin in its mechanical properties," says Madhu Bhaskaran, an engineering professor at RMIT University and the project's lead researcher. It could lead to groundbreaking innovations in prosthetics and robotics. The skin is made of silicone rubber, which is also used in some types of contact lenses.Read MoreFast responseJust like real skin,...

It looks difficult that there will be a new stimulus check soon. Photo: Chip Somodevilla / . Congress returns to work in the final stretch of the year under two pressures: to reopen the discussion for a new economic aid plan and to approve the funds for the government to keep operating. It is a short period of sessions, practically 10 days, before the Chamber stops operating, to return in January. Although the coronavirus pandemic increases as winter approaches, congressmen have as a central point of their agenda to secure resources to avoid the government shutdown. Republicans in the Senate, led by Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) fear that they will not achieve their mission before December 12, so they will have to extend at least until the 20, something that is complicated considering the House. The senator Tim kaine (Virginia) told The Hill...

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has stood up for President Donald Trump and his clashes with the press, claiming that reporters have a 'nastier tone' than they used to and that they should respect the office of the President. Despite his previous clashes with Trump, Cuomo took a hit at reporters, saying that some of them are 'unprofessional', ask 'unintelligent' questions and act like a 'jerk' as he spoke to WAMC's Alan Chartock on Monday about own coronavirus press briefings. Earlier on Monday, Cuomo had picked up an Emmy for 'masterful' use of TV with the briefings, but claimed they were not all 'love and kisses' and would get 'testy' as he accused reporters of asking questions simply for a headline. Cuomo faced immediate backlash from the press following Monday's interview, however, after he also let slip that he had invited his 89-year-old mother to Thanksgiving, despite urging other New...

Of all the songs that played on repeat at the ice cream shop “in a torn-up town” where I worked in high school, “Royals” was the only one I never got sick of. Lorde aged with me, releasing Melodrama 11 days after my 20th birthday. This was a concept album, more ambitious and expansive than her first, framed around a night of partying in the wake of heartbreak. They say that adolescents experience emotions more intensely than adults; Lorde leans into the melodrama, swinging from euphoria on “Green Light” to a theatrical sort of woe...

She went though a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation before being told there’s no evidence of cancer. “It was tough but I was extremely fortunate,” she said. “I had an incredible support system which made all the difference in the world.” After radiation, she was able to get married and later opened a residential cleaning business with her husband. “We were just looking for something to invest in that we could be part of long term and that we could have an...
(CNN)Jamie Lynn Spears is working on that "Zoey 101" reboot, ya'll.The former Nickelodeon star told CNN in a recent interview that she gets asked by fans of the show all the time when there will be some sort of reunion. She says that's why she decided to re-record the theme song from the show that ran from 2005 to 2008. "It was just an overwhelming amount of people asking for some 'Zoey' content. With not being able to fully go into production with anything or move forward as fast as we'd like, I said we've got to give them something. So, I started thinking we can't we just maybe re-do the song? A mini reboot reunion in 3 minutes and 30 seconds."The song, which dropped on Thursday, will also feature a music video with the majority of the original cast and even Spears' daughter, Maddie. "Zoey 101" was a series...

Dear Amy: About eight years ago, I gave my 4-year-old godson a train set for Christmas. He enjoyed it and we played with it together for several years. He eventually outgrew it. Columnist Amy Dickinson (Bill Hogan/Chicago Tribune)  Now, he is 12. He recently discovered the train set in the closet. He wanted to sell it to get money to buy some AirPods, which cost about what he could get for the train set. So, with his parents’ help, he put it online, sold it, and got the AirPods. I think this is great! I believe that once you give a gift, it is theirs to do with as they please, and it does not bother me. The problem is, my wife of four years does not agree. She thinks it was extremely rude of my godson and his parents to sell a personal gift that I got him for...

Getty QB Nick Foles of the Chicago Bears Nick Foles must have woke up feeling a little like Baker Mayfield this week. The Chicago Bears quarterback spoke to the media Wednesday to discuss the team’s current preparations for the Carolina Panthers, and he shared some pretty revealing details about the currently-evolving Bears offense in the process, as well as his role in it. “There’s no complacency,” Foles said about the Bears’ offense. “We have a lot of room for improvement, and that’s the mindset.” He also discussed Chicago’s offensive goals moving forward, and he dialed up a little Baker Mayfield when doing so. “It’s an offense that, you know every single play will be dangerous. And it’ll be tough. And there won’t be any plays where, you know, the defense recognizes what we’re doing. And it’ll really come down to just, the only way we beat ourselves is...

You have hits and misses when buying new weed. Lately, I've had a lot of misses. The weed itself has been fine, but my reaction to it — slow, groggy and despondent — has not been. Maybe this is a by-product of limiting myself to pre-orders out of ’rona fear and not engaging with budtenders before making my purchase (not that we're allowed to smell before we buy now anyway), or maybe my body is just changing; lord knows the shape of it has. Being the cheapskate that I am, though, an in-store-only sale was the only thing that was going to drag me inside a dispensary. And that's when I thought I'd found my dream strain for curing my weed woes. Initially presented with a lineup of potent OGs and Cookies varieties, I asked the budtender for something that was more on the straight-and-narrow path for daytime...
Nicole Karlis October 12, 2020 11:30PM (UTC) In the summer of 2016, three days after a gunman killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, a poem went viral on social media. Called "Good Bones," the text captured the balance between the tragedies of the world, the lure of ignorance, and the life of children in these exceptionally chaotic times — perhaps why it resonated with the public. "Life is short," the poem, written by Maggie Smith, starts, "though I keep this from my children." Those lines became a sort of mantra for the Age of Trump. They also made Smith a household name, as celebrities tweeted snippets of her poem, and publications like Washington Post, the Guardian wrote articles about it; the poem was first published in the literary journal Waxwing. : This week, Smith's new essay collection, "KEEP MOVING: Notes on Loss, Creativity, and Change" — which was appropriately born...
The last four years have brought surprises that no one could have expected. For instance, there was no way anyone could have known that a supernatural horror series on a broadcast network, let alone CBS, would be a cult hit and one of the best shows on TV. And now that Evil, from The Good Wife and The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King, is on Netflix, it’s finding an even bigger audience than when it debuted in 2019. Wisely, the Kings and series stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Kurt Fuller, Christine Lahti and Michael Emerson, took to the 2020 New York Comic-Con to discuss what’s ahead. In Evil’s final season 1 episode, there were many hints being thrown around that something is up with Kristen (Herbers). Is she possessed? Or, at the very least, has she been corrupted? Netflix is trying to surface more new shows in one place. The company announced that it’s going to group some of its content rows together into a tab called New & Popular. This section will only show up on TV devices and is rolling out widely after first being tested in April. The section will group together the New on Netflix row, the Coming Soon row, and the Top 10 row, which is debuted in February and is updated daily. It’ll also include a new row called Worth The Wait that’ll give subscribers a preview of the shows coming to the platform between the next 15 and 365 days. The Worth The Wait section is especially important for Netflix because it gives users a way to save and set reminders for upcoming shows. That might keep them from leaving the service, even if there isn’t anything immediately available they...
In most games, death feels like a waste of time. That’s true whether I die because I fail to react quickly enough, don’t have the right gear, or am just outmatched by the challenge before me. But in Hades, a new roguelike from Bastion maker Supergiant Games, losing against a horde of enemies or a challenging boss in my attempts to escape the Underworld rarely feels like a waste of time. When I die in Hades, it’s usually after an exhilarating battle where I tried an unproven strategy. Those strategies evolve organically thanks to the frequent but unpredictable power-ups given out during a run. Instead of finding that unpredictability as a limitation, though, I’ve found it freeing. It encourages me to test unproven combinations of powers to unexpected and often surprisingly fun results. Here’s one example. My favorite of the eight main weapons in Hades is the Shield of Chaos,...
New York Jets: Something has to change as layoff looms large By: Geoff Magliocchetti October 2, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Jets are reportedly retaining Adam Gase. That shouldn’t stop them from making changes to prevent further embarrassment. Providing a watchable primetime game for the football-loving masses doesn’t earn you any postseason real estate in the National Football League, but it apparently allows you to keep a tenuous grasp on a head coaching position. Thursday night entertainment and competency wasn’t enough for the New York Jets to earn a victory, as they fell 37-28 to the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium. The Jets (0-4) did tally a season-high in scoring and even led for the first time in 2020. But when the endgame remains defeat at the hands of a Denver squad trotting out a third-string quarterback and missing its playmakers,...

From Manhattan to Queens, talented actors and actresses have been hitting the streets, bringing New Yorkers new kinds of entertainment. Baines and his friends showed up for opening night, each getting their temperatures checked before walking in and passing cars and tables spaced at least six feet apart. After talks on a second stimulus bill stalled out, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed for a renewed conversation around a coronavirus bill to help ease the financial burden caused by the crisis. As The Washington Post reported, the economic outlook continues to worsen in the United States, and moderate Democrats in the House are urging her to drive a new bill that can gain approval from both Senate Republicans and the White House. The upper and lower chambers have been battling for weeks now over the amount that they’re willing to compromise on, with Republicans arguing for something closer to $1 trillion, while Democrats started out pushing for something closer to $3.4 trillion in relief. Now, as CNN wrote on Friday, the House is putting together a package that comes in around $2.2 trillion in aid, with a second round of $1,200 stimulus checks for the same people who received...
In a time of pandemic and national turmoil, many Americans feel anxiety over the upcoming general election. Will they be able to vote safely? If they are receiving a ballot by mail, can they depend on the USPS to return it in time? In a new grass-roots effort, a small team came up with a new idea, and quickly brought it to life: the #VotercadeChallenge. Registered voters who are voting by mail can plan a Votercade — a trip to their county elections office or nearby dropoff location — with patriotic clothing and décor encouraged. As “Votercaders” submit their ballots, they can add a #DropoffDance or #BallotBump, then upload a picture or video to their favorite social media platform and tag 5 friends to a #VotercadeChallenge of their own. “My friend Bob Globerman initially asked the question, how can we make...

CHICAGO (CBS) — Some bar and restaurant owners are worried that new restrictions put on them by the City of Chicago are just another hurdle as they try to keep their doors open and the weather turns colder. Inside the acidic clouds of Venus that contribute to the planet being called a “veritable hellscape,” there is a new noxious gas that experts think could hint at a very big discovery on the horizon. Loren Grush of The Verge wrote on Monday that the find could be pointing at a sign of life. The gas isn’t an indicator by itself that Venus is supporting some form of living beings, but it’s a step. The reporter said the emergence has experts claiming it’s clear there is something going on down there and a closer look is warranted to try and see just what it might be. The fumes that showed up earlier this week is made up of phosphine. It’s said to be a toxic and explosive solution that harbors a lingering odor that smells like a combination of garlic and dead fish. Researchers found the phosphine in a layer...
Kim Kardashian isn’t done with television, yet, according to a report from The Sun. While Keeping Up With the Kardashians is ending after 14 years on the air on the E! network, the star of the show isn’t ready to walk away from fame altogether. “She sees a bright future for other shows, which are very different from KUWTK and help her move on as an older, wiser, business-minded mother,” a source close to production said. Kim is reportedly eyeing something like a contest series or perhaps a show focused on fashion, rather than the familiar format of following her around day-to-day. “Projects are in the early stages, but her two decade long expertise in fashion, social media and dealing with all the rollercoasters of fame give her an open field for ideas,” the source said. “A fashion-based entrepreneurial series is something which has been discussed in the past. Former “Empire” star Jussie Smollett insists, in a new Instagram interview with CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill, that he was the victim of a “set up” and that he has two new witnesses to prove that he did not stage a racist and homophobic attack on himself in January of last year, but that he was, in fact, accosted by two white men wearing “Make America Great Again” caps. Smollett told Hill, in one of the first interviews he’s given since a special prosecutor re-charged Smollett with several counts of lying to Chicago police in the hours following the alleged attack, that he is the “only human being” involved in the incident “who has not changed his story one time,” and says he believes a “narrative” was created to sideline his claims of discrimination and harassment. “It was set up to make it seem like I was lying about something...

NEW YORK (AP) — If you’re very lucky, one day Chick Corea will make your portrait. And because he’s a formidable musician, it will be a portrait entirely in musical notes. Corea likes inviting volunteers onto the stage during solo concerts, sitting them down near his piano and creating spontaneous, entirely subjective tone poems about the person. “It starts as a game — to try to capture something I see in music,” he says. “While I play, I look at them a couple of times like a painter would. I try to see if, while I’m playing, are they agreeing with what I’m playing? Do they think that this is really a portrait of them? And usually they do.” Two such vivid portraits are included on his new double album “Plays,” which captures Corea at various concerts armed simply with his piano.
