CHICAGO (AP) — There is no evidence to support allegations accusing the Rev. Michael Pfleger of abusing two brothers in their early teens decades ago, but this doesn't mean the claims are untrue, Illinois' child protection agency said in a letter to the Chicago priest Friday. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services won't list Pfleger as a perpetrator of child abuse on the State Central Register because the agency found no credible evidence of child abuse or neglect, according to the letter that the priest released to the media. “This does not necessarily mean that an incident did not occur,” the letter states. "An incident may have occurred but the evidence did not rise to the level required to indicate for abuse or neglect as dictated by state law and DCFS administrative rule.” In January, the brothers, now in their 60s, alleged Pfleger abused them in the 1970s...

Wall Street’s fear gauge, the VIX, hit its highest level in a month. * “If interest rates level out here and stop rising, everything will be fine, but if the trajectory of rates continues to rise at the same pace, that creates a problem,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner of Harris Financial Group. * “In my opinion, this is more of a temporary blow from people who think...

Next week, Maryland’s Senate will debate a group of bills on police reform. On Friday, Senate President Bill Ferguson presented the bills on the floor, praising the work of the committee that sent the bills to the chamber for a second reading. “The goal here is not to punish individual officers. This is about establishing true accountability, transparency and trust in the system of policing,” Ferguson said during a Friday news conference before the session. However, a coalition of 90 organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, criticized the reforms in the legislation, saying they do not go far enough. A news release from the ACLU of Maryland included a statement from Marion Gray Hopkins, president of the Coalition of Concerned Mothers: “This is insulting, and I call upon the House of Delegates to do better.” Hopkins said the Senate package on reform had been amended in such...

CNN continues to face criticism for its handling of bombshell sexual harassment allegations against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D., as the liberal network spent less than two minutes over 48 hours on the news while harping on a lack of corroboration and the governor’s denial while totally ignoring it during primetime.  NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck wrote that CNN "only tossed scraps to the viewers they treat like small-brained proles with only 96 seconds over two news briefs" by anchors John King and Jake Tapper, who both focused on the governor’s denial before the network went back to overlooking the news during primetime. King Juan Carlos continues to pass accounts with the treasury. According to the newspapers ‘El País’ and ‘El Español’, he has made a second tax regularization for undeclared income during several years that add up to more than eight million euros of payments in kind. Specifically, the emeritus king has submitted a voluntary declaration to the Tax Agency for eight million euros paid by the Zagatka Foundation, owned by Álvaro de Orleans, with which expenses of the king emeritus were paid, especially trips in private planes, according to both newspapers. Digital appears to be Victoria’s Secret’s lifeline, yet the brand is facing a serious rethinking of its business. One element that we cannot lose sight of about the brand is the performance it has achieved over the years. The closure of stores has become a common action by fashion brands, especially after the passage of the health contingency. Victoria’s Secret continues to live a terrible nightmare that has retail in check and is the continuous closure of physical points of sale and an electronic commerce that still does not guarantee the strength to which this brand has become accustomed with sideboards and events as magnanimous as the traditional parade of angels. All that glam has stopped shining and now that the brand is earthly it has faced the cold reality of accounts payable and a brand that has not been able to take flight, on the contrary, has increasingly...

The Conversation Spain What things say about us Sketch for _The Bedroom at Arles_ by Vincent van Gogh (October 1888). Wikimedia Commons / Gogh Museum, Amsterdam In the days following the death of a beloved relative, we re-enter his house, now empty of his laughter and caresses, more full of everything that his life developed between. Photographs, books, her favorite mugs, the jewelry she adorned herself with, the chair she used to watch TV. Tears invade us on our way through the rooms that were so familiar to us and have now suddenly become strange. What was a common space is now nothing but a place of sadness and memory. When the rooms are emptied, a whole world of memories will leave with the things that were so close. The anthropologist and theorist of science Bruno Latour has insisted on the hybridization between things, spaces and identity. Collections, samplings, furnishings,...
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio continues to see sky-high claims for unemployment with fraud blamed for part of the new record numbers, according to the latest jobless data released Thursday. Ohioans filed 101,825 initial claims for unemployment for the week ending Feb. 20, with at least 29,000 of those flagged for potential fraud, the state Department of Job and Family Services said. Over the past year, initial weekly jobless claims have been far higher than before the coronavirus pandemic, with figures ranging from around 20,000 to more than 40,000. But beginning the week ending Feb. 6, the agency received 140,444 initial claims for unemployment, a figure that has slowly declined but still is considered artificially inflated by fraud. The human services agency has set up a hotline and online reporting center to notify the state of potential fraud. About 1.5 million people in Ohio had received the first dose of...

London (CNN)Boris Johnson didn't have a very good start to the pandemic. The United Kingdom still has one of the world's worst coronavirus mortality rates, and is near the top of the table in total infections and deaths -- truly the Covid capital of Europe.Critics have blamed this on several errors made early on, from going into lockdown too late and making a mess of testing to poor government communications. However, of late, Johnson's appear to have turned. On Monday, the Prime Minister was able to reveal a roadmap that would take England out of lockdown before the end of June. Johnson would not have been able to deliver this good news had the UK's vaccine rollout not gone so remarkably well to date. As things stand, the UK has administered more than 18.5 million doses, or 27 per 100 people. Compare this to other European giants like France and Germany,...

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) approval rating has dipped six points since it was revealed that the administration covered up the number of coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes out of fears of a federal investigation, a Morning Consult survey released Monday found. The survey, taken February 12-21 among 3,203 registered New York voters, showed Cuomo with 57 percent approval. While it seems positive on the surface, that reflects a six-point drop from the 63 percent approval he saw in the last survey taken prior to the New York Post bombshell, which featured the stunning admission from Melissa DeRosa, New York’s secretary to the governor. The last survey, taken February 2-11, also showed Cuomo’s disapproval at 33 percent. That number is on the rise, now standing at 38 percent. “By comparison, perceptions of Cuomo went unchanged in the aftermath of state Attorney General Letitia James’ Jan. 28 report that first revealed the...

Now that former President Trump is no longer in office, apparently, it’s now fashionable to join him in condemning the Chinese genocide of the Uighur population. The Trump Administration was the first to label Chinese treatment of the Uighurs as genocide. Now, the Canadian House has voted unanimously to do the same. What’s more, the declaration calls on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to remove the 2022 Olympic games from China if the genocide continues. The Trudeau government abstained from the vote. The reigning champion moves to the Lazio field on Tuesday to play the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, on a day in which Atlético will play their match against Chelsea at home in Bucharest due to the pandemic. In Lazio, a week after a hard defeat (3-1) against the leaders of Serie A, Inter Milan, the players led by Simone Inzaghi achieved the victory with a goal from the Spanish Luis Alberto against Sampdoria (1 -0). They are fifth and have a good series of seven wins and one loss in eight games. The triple finalist – never champion – of the Champions (1974, 2014 and...

Members of the mainstream media have described Sen. Ted Cruz's ill-timed vacation to Cancun amid the weather crisis plaguing his home state of Texas as a comparable "scandal" to the growing legal woes Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is facing over the alleged cover-up of nursing home deaths in his state.  Over the weekend, The New York Times ran the headline, "Cruz and Cuomo Face Scandal. Trump Can’t Save Them," detailing how the news cycle once dominated by the now-former president cannot divert attention from other political controversies. The story lumped Cruz's aborted getaway with Cuomo's handling of nursing homes.  "For much of the past six years, former President Donald J. Trump has dominated the political conversation, prompting days of outrage, finger-pointing and general news cycle havoc with nearly every tweet. The audacious behavior of other politicians was often lost amid Mr. Trump’s obsessive desire to dominate the coverage," the Times wrote...

This content is sponsored by Clean Virginia. Virginians pay the sixth highest electric bills in the country according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. While the legislature has the power to address the rising cost of electricity, utility monopolies have influenced lawmakers, particularly through campaign donations, to keep prices high. Campaign finance reports released in January show that in 2020 Dominion Energy gave a total of $1.3 million to lawmakers, making it the largest political donor in Virginia last year. Previous analysis from the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) found that while most political action committee (PAC) giving was down last year, Dominion was one of only a handful to increase its political giving in Virginia when compared to 2018, the last off-cycle year. In fact, last year Dominion Energy more than tripled the $400,000 of campaign donations it gave in 2018. Take a closer look at how much Virginia...
Just six months since a disgruntled attorney allegedly showed up at federal court Judge Esther Salas' New Jersey home, fatally shooting her son and wounding her husband, the grieving jurist recalled the extent to which her son’s killer went to track her family – as it is revealed that he was doing the same for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, according to a recent interview. Roy Den Hollander had "a complete workup" of Salas’ life with her husband, Mark Anderl, and their 20-year-old son, Daniel Mark Anderl, in the days before the fateful July evening when he showed up at the family's North Brunswick home carrying a FedEx package and posing as a delivery person. "He knew where, obviously, where I lived. He knew my routes to work. He knew the church we attended. He had Daniel’s school. He knew baseball games," Salas told CBS' "60 Minutes" for a segment that...
The Brooklyn Nets have another victory, this time against the Los Angeles Clippers (108-112), while the Philadelphia 76ers have relapsed against the Toronto Raptors (110-103). Game of the Night: Los Angeles Clippers – Brooklyn Nets Brooklyn doesn’t stop anymore. On the night of Sunday to Monday, as part of the NBA regular season, the Nets disposed of the Los Angeles Clippers (108-112), on the side of the Staples Center. The visitors, deprived of Kevin Durant, have, as very often since the beginning of this current exercise, been able to rely on a more than prolific duo. Indeed, James Harden and Kyrie Irving finish top scorers in their franchise. The former even finished top scorer of this meeting, with even a double double key and personal statistics of 37 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists. As for the second, he compiled 28 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists. Among...
(CNN)Large crowds of Haitians took to the streets again on Sunday, as a standoff between President Jovenel Moise and the country's opposition movement stretched into its third week."Those of us fighting, who want another Haiti, a Haiti pearl of the Antilles, say no to the dictatorship," one protester told Reuters in capital city Port-au-Prince, where Haitian opposition and civil society groups had called the demonstration. Another criticized the United States and international organizations for supporting the President. At the heart of protests is a dispute over the President's term limit: Moise has served only four years of the usual five, and says his term ends in 2022 -- a stance backed by the United States, United Nations and Organization of American States.Protesters, however, say he should have stepped down February 7, citing a constitutional provision that starts the clock once a president is elected, rather than when he takes office.Is...

The Community of Madrid celebrates four days this Sunday with a curfew at 11:00 pm and the flexible closure of the hotel and catering establishments. These restrictions were lowered last Thursday, after almost a month in force, due to the improvement that the region had experienced in epidemiological and healthcare indicators, as justified by the regional government at the time. The truth is that the Executive will have to review the measures again this week, since the scenario that came into effect last Thursday was only dictated until March 1. The Ministry of Health will reexamine the data on the evolution of the pandemic this week and will probably announce on Friday if it maintains the curfew at 11:00 p.m. or executes any change in light of the trend of infections. It will be the time of limitation of night mobility that determines the opening of bars and restaurants in...

LOS ANGELES — Jordan Spieth is back. Kind of. He’s not winning golf tournaments again. Not yet, at least. But he appears to have emerged from the wilderness in which he has been lost, in search of his game, for the better part of the past four winless years. For the third consecutive tournament, Spieth has himself in position to win. His second successive 68 in Friday’s second round of the Genesis Invitational has him at 6-under par, six shots back of Sam Burns’ lead entering the weekend at Riviera Country Club. In recent weeks, hope has emerged from Spieth’s game. Last week, he took a two-shot lead into the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. In his previous start, he had a share of the 54-hole lead at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Spieth didn’t win either of those tournaments. He finished tied for third after shooting...

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York State Department of Health will allow nursing homes to resume visitation, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday, as controversy continues to swirl over his handling of data on COVID deaths in such facilities.Cuomo said 73% of nursing home residents are vaccinated, and that visitors must take a rapid test before entry. The state will provide those rapid tests for free.Cuomo also reiterated he wants teachers prioritized for the vaccine, so schools can reopen to in-person learning."The students deserve it, the parents need it," he said. "You're not going to reopen the economy without kids in school."He once again fired back at critics over his handling of the pandemic and the nursing homes in particular, calling the attacks purely political."We didn't fight back against lies and politics and distortions aggressively enough," he said. "I was not aggressive enough in knocking down the falsities...I won't make that...
Left-leaning PolitiFact defended a fact-check that deflected blame on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D., for his role in an alleged cover-up of thousands of nursing home deaths in the state. In August, PolitiFact assigned a fact-check rating of ‘Mostly False’ to claims from former Trump official Michael Caputo stating that the governor "planted the seeds of infection that killed thousands of grandmothers and grandfathers." Despite an admission that Cuomo "faced increasing scrutiny regarding his handling of information related to covid-related deaths among nursing home residents," in the form of a bombshell admission from one of Cuomo’s top aides that he tried to cover up underreported deaths from the policy, the original fact-check ruling remains with a new comment. According to The Federalist, PolitiFact attached an editor’s note Tuesday to the original article, clarifying a fact-check that received criticism on social media. "The [old] fact check itself focused on a policy issued by Cuomo in March directing...
Bitcoin’s market value surged past the $1 trillion mark Friday as the world’s largest cryptocurrency continued its staggering rally. The milestone came as the price of a single bitcoin rose to a fresh all-time record of $54,827.69 shortly before noon, putting it up about 5.6 percent from a day earlier, CoinDesk data show. That means bitcoin is now worth more than all but a handful of the world’s publicly traded companies and accounts for roughly 61 percent of the combined value of all cryptocurrencies in circulation, according to Coinmarketcap.com. Bitcoin’s value has surged more than 82 percent since the start of this year as a growing number of institutional investors and major companies started treating it like a mainstream asset. The digital coin got a boost Friday from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who said it was “a less dumb form of liquidity than cash.” His electric-car maker announced last...
Yuriko Nakao | Getty Images The price of bitcoin crossed another major milestone on Friday, as the cryptocurrency's market value surpassed $1 trillion, according to Coindesk. The digital currency was trading at just under $54,000 per coin on Friday as it hit the new level, up more than 3% in the last 24 hours. The price of bitcoin has now gained about 350% over the past six months. Prior to the recent surge, the digital asset has never traded above $20,000. The move has been fueled in part by increased adoption of the cryptocurrency by major investors and companies. The oldest bank in the United States, the Bank of New York Mellon, announced earlier this month that it was moving into the space. Elon Musk's Tesla converted some of its balance sheet cash into bitcoin earlier this year and said it would start accepting the digital tokens as payment. Market...

The disturbance that had caused massive snowfall in the south began to move to the east coast, where snowflakes were expected Thursday from North Carolina to New England (northeast). In New York, a new white layer was gradually added to the remains of the storm which had already deposited more than 40 centimeters of snow in early February. About four inches had fallen on Central Park in the late afternoon. Some 200 flights have been canceled in New York. “Since December, I don’t think we’ve seen a week without snow. It’s crazy,” said Kara Dickson, a student at NYU University. According to the National Meteorological Service (NWS), an accumulation of ice in North Carolina and Virginia (east) was likely to cause “many” power cuts and falling trees in the hours to come. In Texas (south), more than 250,000 homes were still without electricity, while authorities are working to restore...

By BRUCE SCHREINER, Associated Press FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Multiple COVID-19 vaccination sites will open across Kentucky as the inoculation network grows in preparation for increased vaccine shipments, Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday. More than 555,000 Kentuckians have received at least their first dose of vaccine, but the state's ability to provide shots still far outpaces available supplies, the governor said. The network of vaccination sites will grow to 291 next week with the new openings, which include regional centers in Albany, Cadiz, Campbellsville, Hartford, Marion and Maysville, he said. “There is a provider that has vaccine close to where everybody lives in the commonwealth,” Beshear said at a news conference. "There are some areas where you might have to drive just a little bit further, but we continue to build this out.” Kentucky is set to receive another 29% increase in COVID-19 vaccine supply from the federal government next...
Restaurants don’t need dining rooms anymore. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many restaurants across the country have been forced to close their dining rooms and focus on delivery and take-out orders only. This has seemingly created a new trend in the restaurant industry where restaurants no longer have actual restaurants. Uber Eats reportedly has more than 10,000 delivery-only restaurants on its platform, which is up from just 3,000 in 2019. (iStock) Delivery-only brands have seen significant growth during the pandemic, AP News reports. These restaurant brands are unique in that they typically operate out of another restaurant’s kitchen and focus entirely on fulfilling delivery orders. Many major chains have launched their own delivery-only brands, including Applebee’s (Cosmic Wings), Chili’s (It’s Just Wings), TGI Fridays (Conviction Kitchen) and several others. Independent restaurants have gotten in on the trend as well. COUPLE LEAVES $2G TIP FOR CHICAGO RESTAURANT WHERE THEY HAD...
