this year’s game:

Aaron Rodgers. AP Photo/Jason Behnken Through six weeks of the NFL season there's never been a more chaotic year to bet on. Last week, our picks against the spread eked out a 6-7 record, and could have been 7-6 if not for a game-breaking performance from Derrick Henry for the Titans. This week we're back at it, picking every game against the spread with hopes of finding some winners. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Halfway through the 2020 NFL season, it's safe to say it's like any year that came before it. The schedule shifts from week to week, as do the active rosters of teams across the league with COVID-19 cases making it more important than ever to check the injury report before placing your bets. Because it's unlike any other year, it's time to set one of the oldest rules in gambling aside —...
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The coronavirus pandemic has canceled just about everything. But, the Turkey Bowl tradition will live on. After navigating the longest of slogs, the most turbulent of times, Stanford and Cal are just weeks away from the start of a season that once seemed unlikely. The ancient rivals have one more step to take. It doesn’t require a vote of the Pac-12 CEO. It doesn’t require approval from state or local health authorities. It can be done quickly and efficiently but must be done together. They need to change the location of Big Game. This year’s edition is scheduled for Berkeley on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. The schools should move it to Stanford. They should take advantage of the pandemic to end the tradition of playing Big Game in Memorial Stadium in even years and in Stanford Stadium in odd years. That rotation doesn’t work for either team, their fans or their budgets. It creates an imbalance in the home schedules when combined with the...
AUBURN GRESHAM — While the city did not get a Chicago Football Classic game this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, one part of the popular weekend event is going virtual. The inaugural Virtual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, which runs Oct. 20- 24, will offer five days of financial empowerment workshops, career counseling and an HBCU fair and pep rally. All of the free events will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. Students can register on the Chicago Football Classic’s website. Themed “HBCUs Matter,” the week kicks off Oct. 20 with a financial empowerment and literacy summit. The seminar will provide guidance from financial experts and college advisers for students, showing them how to save for college and be fiscally responsible. Students will have an opportunity to weigh in on the topic of streamlining campus medical services like counseling and wellness programs during a Student...
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — When it comes to the Ravens’ rivals, there’s no doubt it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fight to win the division year in and year out. But Ravens fans know all too well the Cincinnati Bengals always pose a challenge. Last year, the Ravens-Bengals first matchup was a nail-biter, with the Ravens coming out on top by less than a touchdown. The Bengals held reigning league MVP, Lamar Jackson, to just 236 passing yards. CINCINNATI, OHIO – NOVEMBER 10: Lamar Jackson waves at the crowd after the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. (Photo by Bryan Woolston/Getty Images) In their second meeting, Jackson and the Ravens went on to win big in Cincinnati, defeating the Bengals 49-13. Jackson threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one in that game. In 2018, the Ravens and Bengals split their two-game series, with the Bengals winning the first matchup, and the Ravens winning...
This time, there was nothing nefarious lurking around the batter’s box. Nobody will ever ask if Mike Brosseau had a buzzer attached to his chest. Nobody will ever wonder if someone slammed a garbage can in order to relay what was coming. That was last year. That was Jose Altuve, in a deafening cauldron called Minute Maid Park. This time it was simply the 10th pitch of an epic at-bat on church-quiet neutral grounds. Aroldis Chapman wasn’t going to be beaten with his slider this time. He came with the heat. He came with the gas. He came with 100 miles per hour. Brosseau was ready for it. And Brosseau wasn’t going to wave his teammates away after he crushed it, either, wasn’t going to beg them to not rip his jersey off. In the serenity of an empty Petco Park, he was going to let joyous Rays teammates share...

(WJZ)- October 9, 1996 is a date that is still seared into the memory of many Orioles fans. It was on that date, in Game 1 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees, that things went sideways in the team’s big for a World Series. In the bottom of the eighth inning, leading 4-3, Armando Benitez faced a young Derek Jeter. Benitez had struck out the previous hitter, Jim Leyritz on five pitches. On the first pitch to Jeter, the 22-year-old hit a deep fly ball towards the short porch in right field at the old Yankees Stadium. Right fielder Tony Tarrasco, in to replace Bobby Bonilla, seemed to have a bead on the ball as he backed up onto the warning track. Then, well, O’s fans know what happened next. Today In 1996: 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier causes an uproar when he reaches over the wall and turns Derek...
If you were working on the screenplay, you would have Gerrit Cole starting in ALDS Game 5. Starting on short rest for the first time in his career. Starting to get his new team to the ALCS against his old team. The Yankees got the ball to Cole. They did that by surviving a do-or-die Game 4 thanks to a cast of heroes. Jordan Montgomery provided four quality innings Thursday night, when the Yankees had to be on red alert from the outset just in case the lefty didn’t have it. Chad Green began a strong relay race of bullpen arms followed by Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman. Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu had terrific at-bats, Luke Voit and Gleyber Torres went deep, and Kyle Higashioka delivered an insurance run. Add it all up and the Yankees played a thorough game to beat the Rays 5-1. So now there will...
Bear hunting in New Jersey would be suspended after this year under a plan announced by Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday. The New Jersey Fish and Game Council has a new amendment on the table to put local bear hunts on hold, said Murphy — who already outlawed bear hunting on state land in 2018. “2020 bear hunt will be the LAST,’’ the governor confidently tweeted. “The New Jersey Fish and Game Council has proposed an amendment to the Game Code that will: SUSPEND the bear hunt following the conclusion of the 2020 season. Remove the current Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy from the Game Code.’’ Murphy added during a conference call with reporters on COVID-19, “This means, drum roll, that the 2020 bear hunt — already limited to a few days in October and December and, pursuant to my 2018 executive order, not permitted on state lands —...
The Atlanta Falcons’ defense has been atrocious in the first three weeks of the season, but they might have pulled off their best play of the season. We’re going to put this bluntly, the Atlanta Falcons defense has been dreadful this season. They were decimated by Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in their regular-season opener, they blew a 29-10 lead to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2, and allowed the Nick Foles-led Chicago Bears to pull off the comeback victory last week. The defensive production has been alarming, especially since that is head coach Dan Quinn’s expertise. But in the fourth game, the squad showed some promise. On Monday evening, the Falcons trailed the Green Bay Packers 7-0 in the first quarter. Green Bay forced its way to the red zone but failed to score a touchdown on third-and-goal. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur knew how bad Atlanta’s defense...

That’s a good thing! As we’ve mentioned on this site numerous times, any ratings or viewership number that isn’t down from last year can only be considered a positive development (pun intended). However, local ratings were down 11%, as they have been across most sports and non-sports programming, due to changes in how Nielsen measures viewership. That isn’t great! Forbes didn’t reveal full ratings info...

(AP) — Joey Votto was at a bit of a loss to describe what had happened to the Reds. Two games, 22 innings and zero runs: Just like that, Cincinnati and its faltering offense had been eliminated from the MLB playoffs by the Atlanta Braves. “There’s so few opportunities to show your true selves in a two-game series,” Votto said Thursday. For fans who enjoy chaos, drama and sheer randomness, the past three days provided it. For good baseball teams that endured months of semi-quarantine, COVID-19 protocols and eerily quiet stadiums, watching a season end in less than 36 hours was brutal. It’s not just the Reds who are done. The Cleveland Indians were swept away by the New York Yankees, the AL Central champ Minnesota Twins were bounced by the Houston Astros and the up-and-coming Toronto Blue Jays were pushed aside by the Tampa Bay Rays. In Thursday’s nightcap, the...

World of Warcraft Shadowlands won’t make its October 26th release date. Blizzard announced on Thursday it’s delaying the expansion until sometime later this year to give itself more time to polish the title. The studio says it’s still deciding on a new release date, but felt it was best to inform the game’s community as soon as possible. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for the team, as we’re as eager to get the expansion into your hands as you are to play it — but ultimately, we feel it’s the right decision for the game — and for our players,” the studio said. “Blizzard has a commitment to quality. We believe Shadowlands  will be something special, and we’ve heard from many of you who feel the same. We need this extra time to ensure that Shadowlands lives up to its full potential.”

And the wide receiver talent across college football continues to be stunningly impressive. Game 2 started in September and ended in October. It had a rain delay both without and with actual rain. It was filled with walks and runs, yet basically crawled to a major league record for a nine-inning game of 4 hours and 50 minutes. The Yankees only won this marathon and clinched this series against the Indians because the length, discipline and power of their offense overcame the shoddy work of their bullpen. The final was 10-9, the Yanks scoring two in the ninth via their once-again awakened circular lineup as ninth-place hitter Gary Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly and leadoff man DJ LeMahieu Sojo-ed a bouncer up the middle for a two-out, two-strike RBI single. “You don’t have to pour champagne to appreciate what an epic game that was,” Aaron Boone said. Even a bubbly-free environment enforced by MLB rule could not douse the spirits of a team...
The Chicago Cubs are in the postseason again for the fourth time in five years, but could this be on their final runs as currently constructed? There hasn’t been much change for the Cubs since 2015. The most obvious change was hiring first-year manager David Ross, who came in to replace the future hall of fame manager Joe Maddon. “I’m not going to shy away from this,” Rizzo said Thursday of his rare blend of having fun and taking each game seriously. “This could be (our) last year together. We all know that, especially with the state of the game and who knows what’s going to happen. “This could be our last run with all our guys. This could be my last year. Who knows?” With the Cubs preparing for what could be their final postseason with this current core, it’s hard not to look back on that late July...

(CBS Local)- The college football season is well underway, but Saturday marks the debut of the SEC as they kick off their ten game conference only schedule with Week 1 on Saturday. With the return of the SEC comes the return of the SEC on CBS with LSU hosting Mississippi State. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jamie Erdahl once again have the call for the network as the conference embarks on another season on CBS. For the opener, it’s a fascinating matchup between an LSU team that looks much different than the one which won the championship in January and a Mississippi State squad assuming a new identity under new head coach Mike Leach. For LSU, the Tigers saw co-offensive coordinator Joe Brady, quarterback Joe Burrow, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, receiver Justin Jefferson and four starting offensive linemen are all gone. In addition, junior receiver J’Marr Chase opted to focus...
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Ravens are set to take on the Texans in Houston for their first road trip of the season. It is the first time the Ravens travel as a team during the COVID-19 pandemic, and like every NFL team, they must adhere to strict protocols put in place by the league. The rules include a virtual lockdown at the team hotel when they arrive in Houston. Linebacker Tyus Bowser is one of at least 10 Ravens with football roots in the State of Texas. The game would, in some ways, be a homecoming for them. Under normal circumstances, they would meet with family and friends at the team hotel and get them tickets for the game. But, there will be no fans at the game in Houston and there will be restrictions on socializing. “It’s unfortunate,” Bowser said. “All of my family was buying tickets, telling me they...

Maybe the expanded MLB postseason field is here to stay after all?It seems likely the MLB postseason field will stay at 16 teams beyond the 2020 campaign. In David Sheinin’s feature for The Washington Post, he writes that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred believes a “16-team postseason is likely to remain beyond 2020, adding that ‘an overwhelming majority’ of owners had already endorsed the concept before the pandemic.” “I think there’s a lot to commend it,” said Manfred, “and it is one of those changes I hope will become a permanent part of our landscape.” Baseball went to 10 teams from eight back in 2012 with the AL and NL Wild Card Games. 1995 was the first postseason with eight teams making the field. Though a leap up from 10 to 16 seems like a lot, here is why it’s going to stay beyond 2020.The money, interest and expansion opportunities are...

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) — When the San Francisco 49ers take the field Sunday, something will definitely be missing. The stands at Levi’s Stadium will be empty, giving Kyle Murray Arizona Cardinals a bit of an advantage. Which seems odd since it’s a 49ers home game. Defensive coordinator Coordinator Robert Saleh says it’s part of a noticeable shift during the COVID-19 era. “You don’t worry about it with the game starting, but I do think one of the greatest things for a team that has the pass rush that we have is having home-field advantage where another team has to do silent count,” he said. “The fact that we’re not able to use it, I’m assuming that they’ll be able to use their cadence. We’ll see how it goes in the game, but yeah, it’s the home-field advantage right there and if you’ve got to play every game as a...
Photo by Kyle Zedaker for Tampa Bay BucsMike Evans has been listed as doubtful for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday due to a hamstring issue, according to a Tweet by Adam Schefter. Last year, the Bucs only listed one player, left tackle Donovan Smith, as doubtful all year. Smith did not play that week.  So, in other words, Evans will probably not be suiting up to catch passes from TB12, and even if he does, it might be in a limited capacity.  Now, the Bucs have a seemingly unlimited number of playmakers for TB12, but Evans is probably at the top of that list. He’s a great red zone target, and the team lacks the depth at wide receiver that they seem to have at every other skill position on the offensive side of the ball.  A silver lining could be found here....

Minecraft is getting a free upgrade making the game playable in PlayStation VR later this month, developer Mojang Studios announced in a blog post today. Fans have been asking for PSVR Minecraft for a while now. Although the ever-popular game is already available to play on various virtual reality platforms (it launched on the Oculus Rift back in 2016, for example), Sony’s VR hardware has until now been overlooked. Mojang says the upgrade will come as a free download patch for all players some time later this month. “Everyone who has Minecraft on PlayStation 4 will get that patch automatically,” says the studio. “Download that patch and you’ll get access to the new Minecraft VR functionality. Of course, you’ll need a PS VR setup in order to use it.” Mojang also shared screenshots of what appeared to be Minecraft in PS VR, as seen below: Grid View...
Conference USA has schools stretching over 10 states, from Texas eastward and then toward the north. The 14-team league is within the footprint of the SEC, Big 12 and ACC. Like those Power Five leagues that play in the same region, C-USA is planning to be on the field this fall. Still, things got shaken up even after C-USA decided to keep its original eight-game league schedule intact, and allow schools to play up to four non-conference games as normal. Old Dominion decided last month to not play fall sports amid COVID-19, costing a conference game for every C-USA team in the East Division and two in the West. There were also many games lost with the remaining Power Five conferences (Big Ten, Pac-12) and two Group of Five leagues (MAC, Mountain West) opting to shelve football this fall. C-USA favorite UAB’s season-opening home game Thursday night will...
SACRAMENTO —  This wildfire season is different. And it must be frustrating for many politicians. It certainly is for pundits. That’s because there is no one really to blame. A cardinal rule of politics and punditry is to clearly state the problem, point out who’s at fault and say what should be done about it. But during the current wildfires, no human apparently is at fault. It’s Mother Nature’s handiwork — mostly her lightning strikes. No mortal can turn those fire bolts off. OK, we could prepare better for them and should. But so far, it doesn’t seem to be Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s fault. Unlike in past fire seasons, the utility’s old power equipment isn’t tumbling down and igniting flammable brush or dead trees it should have cleared. There haven’t been any nutty arsonists out there that we know about. Nor careless campers who left their breakfast fires...
(Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)Which NFL records could be broken during the 2020 NFL season?A disclaimer of sorts to begin: The following 10 records are not “guarantees” or all-out prophecies that will come to fruition. Instead, these milestones should be interpreted as feats that could reasonably be surpassed. Practicality and common sense are utilized rather than bombastic soothsaying methods. Let’s be clear, any NFL record like single-game marks could topple on a given Sunday.  In particular, the records at hand are individual ones for specific players. Some interesting ones were even shattered last season. Lamar Jackson accrued the most rushing yards in single-season by a quarterback (1,206). Jackson also had two games with a perfect passer rating, tieing Ben Roethlisberger for the most in a season.RELATED PRODUCTArizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Player BobbleheadBuy Now!Buy Now!Drew Brees completed 29 passes in 30 attempts during a 2019 game — the highest completion percentage...
Next1 of 5Prev postUse your ← → (arrows) to browse Below are 5 reasons why the 49ers can not only get back to the Super Bowl but win this time.  In his third season as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Kyle Shanahan cooked up his best year yet. His offense finished with the second-most points scored (479) behind the Baltimore Ravens, and Robert Saleh coached a top-10 defense. Finishing the season with a 13-3 record, the Niners entered the playoffs as the NFC West division champions and owned the first seed in the NFC postseason picture. In the playoffs, it was old school football that got the team into the Super Bowl. Saleh had the defense flying, and Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo rode the run game hard. Although, all of that was for not. The 49ers blew a lead late in the Super Bowl to the eventual...
More than any other sport, the cream of the NBA assuredly rises to the top in the playoffs. This, of course, is a postseason unlike any other. No fans. No home-court advantage. Everyone hunkered down in the same place. Will a Cinderella team emerge from the pack at Disney World? Maybe even claim an improbable title? “I felt that way coming into the whole thing,” said Rick Carlisle, coach of the seventh-seeded Dallas Mavericks. “Look, there’s no travel, you’ve got really the same environment virtually every game. The digital boards look different and stuff like that, but there’s just a great opportunity here for everybody.” Indeed, we’ve already seen signs of a topsy-turvy tournament unfolding in the land of Mickey Mouse. Milwaukee, top seed from the Eastern Conference, lost Game 1 of its opening-round series against eighth-seeded Orlando. The top team in the West, the Los Angeles...
Florida football might have to wait until 2021 to beat Georgia football.Florida football vs. Georgia football down in Jacksonville this fall could be an all-timer. The Florida Gators’ rivalry with the Georgia Bulldogs is one of the best rivalries in all of college football. It is one of the few remaining neutral-site affairs left in major college football. Every year, the Gators and the Dawgs meet along the Banks of the St. Johns River and duke it out for divisional supremacy down in Jacksonville. The winner of this game typically wins the SEC East. According to SportsBetting.ag, Georgia is favored to win the SEC East at -140, while Florida comes in at even odds. In terms of winning the SEC Championship game, Georgia has the second-best odds in the conference at +250, while Florida has the third-best odds at +550. With both their over/under totals set at a surprisingly low...
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – OCTOBER 13: Stefon Diggs #14 of the Minnesota Vikings catches the ball for a 62 yard touchdown in the second quarter of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at U.S. Bank Stadium on October 13, 2019 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Stephen Maturen/Getty Images) The Eagles hope to reach the Super Bowl for the second time in four years. In this supposed age of parity, getting to the playoffs on a consistent basis is obviously a lot easier said than done. That is unless you are the New England Patriots, who own the NFL record for consecutive postseason trips with 11 and counting. The Kansas City Chiefs are well behind with five straight appearances in the playoffs. And then there are two other teams that have been there three consecutive years: The New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles. Doug Pederson’s club won Super Bowl LII in...

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) Here are five good reasons the Cowboys will win the Super Bowl this year. It has certainly been a while since the Dallas Cowboys won a Super Bowl. America’s Team last won it all in 1996, the final title the team Jimmy Johnson built would claim. Things are looking very good for Dallas this season, which has a tremendous opportunity to win a title this season. Let’s take a look at five big reasons why the Cowboys can claim another title in 2020.5. The Cowboys have a tremendous running gameEven though this is a passing league these days...
In 2004, barely a year after the launch of the popular MMO EVE Online, a player named Azia Burgi thought it would be interesting to gather the bodies of other players killed in the game’s epic space battles, then transport them to a special place—a cemetery for the fallen. More than 15 years later, this cemetery holds hundreds if not thousands of bodies, and has become a place of solace amid the game’s constant wars and brutal hyper-capitalist economy. A “cloud” of grave canisters anchored near a moon in Molea In EVE, dying in space and leaving behind your frozen corpse isn’t a big deal. You lose your ship and the resources it was carrying, but your consciousness is teleported into a clone body so you can keep playing (this is 20,000 years into the future, after all). But the Molea cemetery (located in the star system of the same...
Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon is off to a fantastic start, and here’s precisely how he can hit .400 this year. In a 60-game MLB season, everything will come with some sort of asterisk or caveat. But there is no denying the start Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon is off to when a name like Barry Bonds is mentioned. Blackmon went 3-for-4 against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday night. He is now hitting a nice round .500 for the season, with a 15-game hitting streak going. The last man to hit .400 for a season (and qualify for the batting title) was Ted Williams in 1941 (.406). This short season has invited the notion someone will make a run at .400, if only due to the short sample. So, what does Blackmon have to do to hit .400 this season?Blackmon is starting to spur talk he’ll be the man to stalk .400. ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN - NOVEMBER 30: Head Coach Ryan Day (R) of the Ohio State Buckeyes shakes hands with Head Coach Jim Harbaugh (L) of the Michigan Wolverines after a college football game at Michigan Stadium on November 30, 2019 in Ann Arbor, MI. This is something the Wolverines have not done since 2011 when they won 40-34 over the Buckeyes. Ever since then, it’s been a tough go of it for Michigan, who have lost...
OAKLAND (AP) — Walkoff grand slams are becoming such old hat for the Oakland Athletics this season that they have learned to celebrate in a more socially distant manner. Stephen Piscotty hit Oakland’s second game-ending slam of the year and the A’s beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 Tuesday night for their fourth straight win. “It’s a lot of fun,” Piscotty said. “Pretty unique for that to happen in such a short amount of time. It’s a lot of fun celebrating like that.” The A’s even toned down their celebration after getting some heat for failing to socially distance when mobbing Matt Olson after his opening night slam against the Angels. Piscotty got some high-fives and a Gatorade shower but his teammates mostly kept their distance. “I think we’d all seen a few walkoff homers and the way other teams were doing it,” Piscotty said. “Trying to be a little more...

This year’s Call of Duty sequel will be developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, confirming a report more than a year old that Treyarch’s turn to make the game was being moved up a year. Daniel Alegre, Activision’s chief operating officer, confirmed Treyarch’s role in a quarterly earnings call with investors on Tuesday afternoon. Alegre said Raven and Treyarch would handle “the next premium installment for Call of Duty,” meaning a full title; the two studios later tweeted about their work together. Treyarch is part of a three-studio rotation that includes Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. In May 2019, Kotaku reported that Treyarch, which developed 2018’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and wasn’t due to make another game until 2021, was stepping in for the 2020 game because the collaboration between Sledgehammer and Raven was not going well. Sledgehammer, which made 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII , was said...

To use a boxing term, they looked like a shot fighter. After an 8-0 start a year ago, the New England Patriots wilted the second half of the year. They split their final eight regular-season contests and were then stifled at home by the Tennessee Titans in the wild card round. It marked the first time since 2010 that the club did not reach the AFC Championship Game. This offseason, quarterback Tom Brady and a slew of veterans are...
Even if there is a college football season, and a college football postseason, there won’t be a bowl game in the Bay Area. The event most-recently known as the Redbox Bowl announced Friday that it is on hiatus. Coronavirus is only partially at fault. The 18-year-old event matched the Pac-12 against the Big Ten at Levi’s Stadium. But last winter, the 49ers made the decision “to not renew the current agreement,” according to the franchise. Before the bowl game was able to secure a new home within the region, the pandemic struck. It plans to find a new venue and return to the postseason stage following the 2021 season. “The San Francisco 49ers and Levi’s Stadium have been incredible stewards of CFB over the last six years, and I, along with so many Bay Area College Football fans, am grateful for all they’ve done to support and promote the game,”...
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -Another Major League Baseball game has been put on hold because of the coronavirus. Friday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers game was postponed after two Cardinals players tested positive for the virus. MLB is hoping to make up the game in a double header on Sunday. It’s the 15th game postponed because of the coronavirus. The Yankees will finally open up their season at home Friday night. It’s against their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Normally, fans would flock to the stadium. If you looked around there Friday, you wouldn’t know it was opening day, reported CBS2’s Kevin Rincon. There’s no crowds, no vendors. It’s different not just outside, but also inside. The Yankees have played a handful of games already in empty stadiums. Already a few games had to be postponed after more than a dozen players on the Miami Marlins tested positive for COVID-19....
How in the world do you forecast a 60-game baseball season amidst a pandemic? You allow for far more freak occurrences. You concede that the fate of the season will be determined as much by external forces, like our country’s questionable willingness to take the coronavirus seriously and those ripple effects, as by, say, the members of a specific team’s pitching staff. You come to peace with the reality that picking winners in this upside-down season, more than any other, requires an immense portion of good fortune. All the more so in light of Major League Baseball’s decision, in conjunction with with the MLB Players Association, to expand the postseason to 16 teams — an agreement made so late in the action, a couple of hours before the Yankees and Nationals kicked things off last Thursday night, that we published our predictions under the impression that the old, 10-team playoff...
This year’s online-only Pokémon Go Fest took place over the weekend, and since it was the first one open to all players regardless of their physical location, it’s perhaps not surprising to hear that it was the biggest one yet. Niantic says “a record number of millions of trainers” took part from 124 countries and regions around the world, catching nearly a billion pokémon in total. The event involved new quest lines on each day, culminating in players battling Team Rocket leaders and catching Victini, a mythical pokémon that was made available in the game for the first time. Other features of the fest included new shiny pokémon and regional pokémon appearing outside their typical habitats, although not as many as might normally be found at an in-person event. The only regional addition I personally saw was Heatmor, which is normally only found in the Western hemisphere. ...
President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he would throw out the starting pitch for a New York Yankee game this season. The president said that Yankees President Randy Levine was a “great friend” and asked him to throw a starting pitch in the stadium at a game in August. “I said, ‘How’s the crowd going to be,'” Trump joked. “It’s like you don’t have a crowd, there’s no such thing.” The Yankees confirmed Trump’s comments on Thursday night, according to reports. Many local officials have prohibited teams from welcoming crowds into sports stadiums during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump said he would likely throw the first pitch at a Yankee game on August 15. The president would likely face a vocally divided crowd in New York City if he arrived at a normally crowded stadium to throw out the first pitch. During the World Series, Trump was booed by the...
StarCraft II has been out for almost a decade now. To commemorate the game’s tenth anniversary, Blizzard is publicly testing an anniversary update, introducing new campaign achievements for every mission in StarCraft II’s base game and its three expansions, in addition to changes that empower players to create their own custom campaigns. One reason StarCraft II has stuck around so long is that fans have kept it alive by creating custom campaigns in the game. Blizzard has now absorbed several elements from Warcraft III’s game editor, making the interface in StarCraft II easier to use — there’s an entire gigantic blog post from the company detailing everything that’s new for the game’s map editor. The anniversary patch also introduced a new transitioning lobby, making it easier to move between two maps in multiplayer, in addition to a new “Campaign” subsection in the game’s variants menu. Technically, Blizzard released many...
THIS has been a season we will never forget. In terms of football and racism, everybody has seen the discrimination and abuse, including England’s game in Bulgaria and increasingly online. 3Palace star Zaha is one of those players subjected to sickening racismCredit: Rex Features For society, the death of George Floyd made me depressed. Then you add coronavirus and the financial implications across football and it becomes a worrying time. But there are always things that give hope, like the way football has reacted to Covid-19, with so many clubs doing amazing work in their communities. Marcus Rashford’s success with school meals is another and the way football — and players in particular — have responded to Black Lives Matter. There is an appetite to turn the words into real, meaningful and long-term action, to do the things needed to create lasting change and opportunities. But we also have to...
DENVER (CBS4)– They say “slow and steady wins the race,” and in baseball that’s almost always true. But that’s not the case in 2020. “The approach is different because if you lose early on, you typically can make it up on the back end. There’s no back end no more,” Nolan Arenado said. “You have to get off to a good start.” (Credit: CBS) The luxury of patience that comes with a 162-game season doesn’t apply this season. One game in 2020 will be worth 2.7 times as much as a single game in a normal season. “If you get off to a hot start, it’s going to be huge,” Arenado said. “Everyone goes through bad streaks in baseball. Bad streaks this year are going to be absolutely killer.” Everything about this year’s 60-game season will be a sprint – except inside the batter’s box. Rockies manager Bud Black...
Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies. (Photo by Darren Carroll/Getty Images) What if Texas football played Texas A&M football this season as a plus-one?Texas football and Texas A&M football need to get back to playing each other annually again. With the most recent wave of realignment in college sports, the bitter rivals from the Lone Star State haven’t met since 2011. The Texas A&M Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012 and have not faced the Texas Longhorns since. It’s one of the best rivalries that have been killed by the conference realignment of the 2010s. It’s a shame, but maybe we’ll get the game back soon? According to Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, who covers the Longhorns, he quoted Texas head football coach Tom Herman on the chances of us getting a surprise rendition of the Lone Star Showdown this fall as a plus-one. “We’ve reached...
Welcome to The Show. It’s been a long, long wait, which agitated fans, writers, players and everyone else, as MLB and the MLBPA quibbled for months, arguing in public over prorated salaries, length of season, grievances and other such minutiae that’s all so tiring and exhausting to think about.  But the “When and Where” rallying cry has now turned to “Here and Now,” and Major League Baseball is, finally, back. Whether you agree with pro sports happening in 2020 is one thing, but for now, the league is resuming in the face of the coronavirus pandemic that is still wreaking havoc on the United States. In a year that could have been written by cinema’s best — or worst — horror writers, baseball will be back with a season that’s not much longer than most Netflix docuseries. That doesn’t mean 2020 will be devoid of drama, pressure or stories. Just the opposite, actually. MORE:...
“Ubisoft Forward was a major milestone and the response from our fans was very promising,” Duguet said on the call (via Video Games Chronicle). “We achieved record-high peak concurrent viewership during this event, surpassing our previous E3 conferences.” The company’s leaders also discussed the recent harassment and misconduct scandals. On the call and in its earnings report , Ubisoft reiterated some points it previously made on the matter. It has set up a confidential third-party reporting system and appointed a head of workplace culture. It plans to hire a head of diversity and inclusion as well. It also revealed that “a portion of team leads’ bonuses will be tied to their ability to create a positive and inclusive workplace environment.”
New York Yankees: This day in Yankee history and a preview of tonight’s Yanks/Mets match up By: William Parlee July 19, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesThe New York Yankees have a rich history in baseball going back 107 years. With such a long history, it’s no surprise that each day has historical connections with the past.  Today is no different. Back in 1940, Bill Dickey’s backup catcher Buddy Rosar triples in the first inning, singled in the second, homers in the fourth and doubled in the sixth for the Yankees ninth hitting for the cycle in Yankee history. On this day in 1955, Enos Slaughter, at the age of 43 years, 83 days, he becomes the oldest Yankees player ever to hit a home run in a game. Remarkably he hit two home runs...
The Mets got good and hammered Saturday night at Citi Field, the Yankees handing them a 9-3 loss thanks in large part to a ninth inning that looked an awful lot like the fever dreams that haunted their fans most of last year. It was exactly the kind of game we’ve seen at Citi Field the past 12 years, and at Shea Stadium for so many years before it, that would elicit the overpowering woe-is-me and woe-are-us reactions that have come to be as essential a part of the franchise soundtrack as “Meet the Mets.” Only a funny thing happened. Nobody booed. The veil of dread that sits in storage alongside the batting cages and the tarpaulin wasn’t unwrapped. There was nobody to boo. There was nobody to drag the doom around. And suddenly, we may have discovered the true upside for the Mets — and, sure, the Yankees, whose...
Google Stadia is adding more than a dozen new games to its cloud service over the next few months, in addition to five exclusives detailed this morning as part of its Stadia Connect announcement. Among the new additions are IO Interactive’s Hitman reboot series — including both the first game, its sequel, and the planned Hitman 3 in 2021 — and FromSoftware’s excellent samurai action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The Hitman reboot series will be available September 1st, while Sekiro is coming later this fall. Stadia is adding a handful of other prominent 2K sports games, too. The upcoming PGA Tour 2K21 is coming to Stadia upon release on August 21st, while WWE 2K Battlegrounds is coming September 18th and NBA 2K21 will be out later this fall. ‘Hitman’ and ‘Sekiro’ are solid additions to Stadia A couple of the other additions are “First on Stadia”...
Getty Brian Hill #23 of the Atlanta Falcons. Devonta Freeman may be out of the picture, but the Falcons still have Brian Hill to look forward to. And of course, yes, Todd Gurley. However, Atlanta seems to be forgetting about “B. Hill” with all the hype around Gurley coming home. Hill officially signed his original-round tender back in April. Fortunately, he wasn’t picked up by another team so he’ll be in Atlanta for at least another year. Falcons backup QB Kurt Benkert has high hopes for Hill this season. “I was talking to him about someone today, Benkert told Heavy.com. He’s just a workhorse. He has the same speed every day whether it’s a practice or a game. You can count on him to take the ball to the house.” A ‘Workhorse’ After Freeman’s primary backup, Ito Smith was out due to a neck and concussion injury last season, Hill stepped...
Many players get posterized and that is just normal in the NBA. When in defense, there can be times when an offensive player finds that desired gap coupled with a fierce timing. But how often do you hear someone dunking on the likes of James Harden, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and LeBron James? These are big bulky guys who stand tall like a massive wall when patrolling in defense. To cross them, let alone to dunk on them is a Herculean task many would not dare take.  But here we are, talking about that one preposterous time when LeBron was dominated by a prime force. Jaylen Brown is our man who made the impossible look easy when he jumped over The L-Train to win those two points. Yes, it definitely got the Boston Celtics only two points but the effort was worthy of 20 points.  Jaylen Brown dunk on...
(CBSNewYork)- One week and a day from now, NYCFC will be back on the field kicking off the first game of their Group Stage against Philadelphia Union in Orlando. It’s been a long layoff since Ronny Deila’s squad opened the season with a pair of tough losses, but they enter next week’s MLS Is Back tournament tied for the second-best odds of taking home the trophy. It’s easy to understand why that is. Despite the two early results, Deila’s club is stacked with returning talent bringing back the top 14 players from last year’s group that topped the Eastern Conference and made it to the conference final. Deila is new and, at the beginning of the year, was still getting to know his players and their skill sets having been working in Norway for Valerenga when he was hired by the club. According to MLSSoccer.com writer Tom Bogert, Deila’s taken...

NEW YORK (AP) — So, where were we? Mid-March, a spring training exhibition between the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. Even before the final out, both sides had gotten the official word: Major League Baseball was shutting down immediately because of the coronavirus pandemic. “It felt like the most meaningless baseball game in the history of the sport,” Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter said. So now, they’ll try again. A skewed, 60-game schedule, rather than the full plate of 162, with opening day on July 23 or 24.
