HONG KONG – Hong Kong has unveiled controversial guidelines for schools in the Chinese-ruled city that include teaching students as young as six about colluding with foreign forces and subversion as part of a new national security curriculum. Beijing imposed a security law on Hong Kong in June 2020 in response to months of often violent anti-government and anti-China protests in 2019 that put the global financial hub more firmly on an authoritarian path. The Education Bureau’s guidelines, released late on Thursday, show that Beijing’s plans for the semi-autonomous Hong Kong go beyond quashing dissent and aim for a societal overhaul to bring its most restive city more in line with the Communist Party-ruled mainland. “National security is of great importance. Teachers should not treat it as if it is a controversial issue for discussion as usual,” the guidelines said. Teachers should “clearly point out that safeguarding national security...

When it comes to Covid, our lungs are ‘ground zero’. They are one of the primary routes the virus uses to get into the body. But early on in the pandemic, chest X-ray scans revealed something else: where the images should be black, indicating healthy air-filled tissue, in many cases there was a white mist described as resembling ‘ground glass’. It’s the telltale sign of pneumonitis – inflamed lungs as a result of the body’s immune response to the virus. But in the case of Covid, the damage often seems to be far worse and more extensive than with similar illnesses such as flu. This distinctive pattern became known as ‘Covid lung’, and many doctors now say they’re almost able to diagnose the disease just by looking at one of these images. The worst affected end up on ventilators in intensive care, fighting for breath. About a third don’t make...

Taking up vaping increases the likelihood that young people will end up smoking traditional cigarettes daily by three fold, a study has warned.  US researchers studied data on the evolving tobacco product use more than 49,000 young people aged between 12–24 over four years. The team found that — among those who experimented with tobacco usage — the number of daily users increased with age through to 28 years old. In fact, the percentage of daily cigarette smokers nearly doubled between 18–21 year olds (at 12 per cent) and 25–28 year olds (at 21 per cent.) Experimenting with tobacco at a younger age and trying out multiple products — cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc. — increases the risk of addition, the researchers said.   Taking up vaping increases the likelihood that young people will end up smoking traditional cigarettes daily by three fold, a study has warned. 'There was this whole visa thing, he had a job set up, and so we took him in,' Obama said on the podcast. 'And I didn’t want to like him, but he’s a good kid.' Rory Farquharson and Malia Obama spent the early days of the pandemic with the Obamas It's not clear when they began dating, but they've been spotted together as early as 2017 Rory Farquharson (left) attended Harvard, where Malia Obama also attended for a few years The former president had some nice anecdotes about quarantining together,...

BRONZEVILLE — Community organizers demonstrated outside Chicago Police headquarters Thursday night to criticize Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the police department over the 2019 botched raid of Anjanette Young’s home. Members of Black Lives Matter Chicago, GoodKids MadCity, the Women’s All Points Bulletin and other community groups praised Young for publicly sharing her story and pledged to continue organizing to demand everyone involved in the incident be investigated and held accountable. They also called for an end to raids inside homes, criminal charges and discipline for anyone involved in incorrect raids, and quicker release of records to people who have been targeted. “To my dismay, I’m at this police station again to say sorry, to another Black woman, Anjanette Young, for how the city and the city’s political officials have failed you and failed us,” said Jalen Kobayashi, an organizer with GoodKids MadCity. Jitu Brown, board president of the...
Of all people, I expect more from Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the first Black woman to lead the city and the first LGBTQ person to do so as well. She, however, is being accused of actively trying to cover up the horrific injustice that left Anjanette Young, a Black social worker, naked with police body-cameras rolling in her own home, the wrong home in a horribly botched city raid on Feb. 21, 2019. “I was terrified. I tell people that I was scared into compliance," Young told MSNBC's Joy Reid. I was afraid to move because in that moment, I thought if I did anything out of the ordinary that they would shoot me.” Yet the initial response from the city’s legal team in the incident was to attempt to hide the video of Young, who had been adamant that she wanted it released, CBS Chicago reported. The body-camera footage was released recently after about a...

Peter Nygard is seen in disturbing footage prowling a Brazilian beach and leering at young girls in bikinis, even making a sick remark that a 15-year-old should lie about her age, a video obtained by DailyMail.com reveals. The 79-year-old was arrested on Monday in Canada on allegations he sexually abused women and girls after luring them into his orbit with opportunities in fashion and modeling over the past 25 years, with the charges announced by Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss in Manhattan, the FBI and New York City police. He was indicted on racketeering, sex trafficking, and related crimes arising out of a 'decades-long pattern' of criminal conduct involving at least dozens of victims in the United States, the Bahamas, and Canada, among other locations, prosecutors said in a statement. Now in unearthed footage, the elderly fashion mogul is seen shirtless roaming Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana Beach on New...
The Crown's portrayal of Prince Charles and Prince Andrew as warring brothers is 'not accurate' because the pair enjoyed a close relationship in the early years of their respective marriages, a royal expert has claimed. The fourth series of the hit Netflix shows Prince Andrew (Andrew Buchan) accusing Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor) of being 'jealous' of his military record and popularity around the time of his 1986 wedding to Sarah Ferguson.  But in reality the brothers were close and, together with Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana, established themselves as the original 'fab four' of the royal family, Katie Nicholl told Australian website 9Honey. It was only later that a rivalry developed between them, she said.    The Crown's portrayal of Prince Charles and Prince Andrew as warring brothers is 'not accurate' because the pair enjoyed a close relationship in the early years of their respective marriages, a royal expert has...
CHICAGO (CBS) — Just days after a video showed Chicago Police invading her home, and handcuffing her while naked, Anjanette Young stood before the media with a direct message to Mayor Lightfoot: “I believed in you as a Black woman.” Young said she voted for Lightfoot, whose own law department not only tried to stop CBS 2 from telling her story on Monday, but is asking a federal judge to punish her over the video’s release. Young stood naked before heavily armed Chicago Police officers who had just wrongly burst into her home in February, 2019, just a few months before Lightfoot took office. She was handcuffed and pleaded with the officers, telling them they were wrong. It is the job of police “to serve and protect,” Young said on Wednesday. “Well they didn’t do that for me. They didn’t care about me. So, yes, I would ask for accountability if...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – More time at home this year has apparently given people more time to fill out graduate school applications. The number of medical school applicants is up 18% nationally compared to last year, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. At the University of Minnesota’s Medical School, the surge is even more pronounced. Dimple Patel, an associate dean of admissions for the school, says applications are up 40% at the Twin Cities campus. They’re up 77% at the Duluth campus. “All of the many issues related to the pandemic have motivated young people to make decisions about their career and commit to applying to medical school,” she said. Rahi Patel, no relation to Dimple Patel, is a University of Minnesota junior on a pre-med track. She says everything that’s happened this year has only cemented her feelings about applying next summer. “You see on the TV the...
