EAST QUOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — On the East End of Long Island, many school districts are scrambling to find extra space and teachers. It’s due to an influx of families from New York City, who are renting, buying or just staying beyond the summer season, CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported Monday. MORE: Schools: The New Normal | Parents Feeling Stressed And Worried About This School Year Are Definitely Not Alone The Hochhauser family moved from their rental in Forest Hills, Queens to a rental in East Quogue and are paying the same. They enrolled their sons in public school in-person five days a week. They said the boys had been miserable in remote learning. “First of all, you can’t see any of your friends when you are quarantining,” 7-year-old Sam said. “Back in New York City, I would be going into middle school. Here, I’m still in elementary school,” 11-year-old Nicholas added....

(CNN)A tale of contrasting temperatures will dominate the weather pattern this week in the Lower 48 states. The West will see warmer-than-average temperatures all week with nearly 30 record highs possible. In the East, the arrival of autumnal air will mean a temperature tumble for many big cities. The jet stream, a highway of fast-moving air that acts as a barrier between hot and cold temperatures, will take a more extreme shape this week that will allow for the heat to remain out West and intrusions of cooler air in the East. From the Midwest to the Northeast and down to the Gulf Coast, a dip in the jet stream is expected to send temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below average. In Chicago, Monday's high of 78 will be a stark contrast to the end of the week, when highs are forecast to top out at only around 55 degrees.Even in Florida, the...

Anyway all water under the bridge who gives a fook. I’m boxing Manny Pacquiao next in the Middle East. — Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) September 25, 2020 This would be absolutely awesome if it actually happens. McGregor claims to be retired from the UFC, and I’m not sure a single person on the planet believes that. Something tells me we’ll see him in the octagon again. The man was born to fight, and I think his retirement claims are complete nonsense. Having said that, I’d love to see him box Pacquiao in the meantime. While he lost to...

King Salman of Saudi Arabia called for “coexistence among all the region’s peoples” and endorsed President Trump’s Middle East diplomacy just days after the signing of historic agreements between Israel and two other Gulf Arab states. “Peace in the Middle East is our strategic option,” the oil-rich monarch told the United Nations General Assembly. ”And we will spare no effort to work together towards achieving a bright future where peace, stability, prosperity, and coexistence among all the region’s peoples prevail.” His recorded comments seemed to indicate that Saudi Arabia approves of the recent normalization of ties between Israel and two of the monarchy’s closest allies, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Yet, he avoided any explicit reference to the newly signed Abraham Accords despite Trump’s prediction that “many other Middle Eastern countries” would soon ink similar pacts. “They are coming fast, and they know it’s great for...
BENI, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Wearing leather leggings under her dress, Imelda Mbambu weaves her motorcycle taxi through the city of Beni in north east Congo, a handbag slung across her side and a happy customer perched on the back. Once a farmer, it was the death of Mbambu's husband ten years ago that forced her to find a new way to support her six children in a city where the majority of people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 a day. She sank her savings into a red motorbike, known locally as a "boda", and hit the road. Decades of unrest, including a civil war that ended in 2003 and an ongoing Islamist insurgency, has made violence against women commonplace in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, ranked one of the 10 most dangerous countries to be a woman by a Thomson Reuters...

For more than a week, tens of thousands of protesters have flocked to the streets of Khabarovsk, a region in eastern Russia that has become the epicenter of one of the largest mass protests in the country in the last years. In its eponymous capital, which is more than 6,000 kilometers east of Moscow, around 40,000 people -in a city of 600,000 inhabitants- participated in this Saturday’s call with banners reading “Free Sergei Furgal” , according to local media reported. Sergei Furgal, governor of Khabarovsk Krai, was arrested on July 9; The Russian authorities accuse him of having ordered the murder of several businessmen 15 years ago, without specifying a specific number. He is one of the few regional leaders who is not aligned with President Putin’s government, which is why protesters believe it is “another political move” to control an opposition-administered region. Moscow denies that...
I have noted before that I grew up in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates. From 1980-1990, my family lived in an ungated community in the middle of the city down the street from the Iranian Hospital with the Jumeirah American School just one long block up the road. We walked to school every day. The school changed its name to the American School of Dubai the year after I graduated. It moved locations. The current school at the old location is the Jumeirah Baccalaureate School. My old house is all that remains of my neighborhood. The whole place got leveled and rebuilt, except my house on the corner at 27 Sheikh Rashid Villas, which is now No. 39 on 32b Street, Dubai, UAE. The only reason my house remained is because it became a doctor’s office some time after we moved home in the run up to the...
With coronavirus safety precautions in place since March, it’s been six months since actors, dancers, musicians and other performers had a venue in which to perform in front of a live audience — at least not in any way that’s safe for both themselves and their audiences. Online performances of various kinds have popped up in the interim, which is great but a very different thing. Neighborhood Stories comes out of that unsated hunger for live performance. People sign up to drive around Oakland watching music, dance and theater performances all around the city from the safety of their cars, learning the location of the next act as soon as the preceding one ends. Tickets are strictly limited to three cars per time slot, to avoid too much competition for places to park and watch the show. The whole experience lasts a little under two hours, including seven very different...

Fox News contributor Juan Williams made the case Tuesday that recent peace deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain brokered by President Donald Trump are actually "accelerating" the "chance of war" in the Middle East. President Trump has been lauded by many for his role in brokering the deals, which officially normalized relations between Israel and the two Middle Eastern countries. The president was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for securing the deal between Israel and the UAE. But Williams, a Trump critic, interpreted the news of peace much differently. Williams presented his argument on Fox News' "The Five" while the panelists were discussing recent remarks made by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in which she called the deals a "distraction." "It is [a distraction]," Williams said. "The real trouble here is between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and that situation has...

(CNN)President Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, hailed the US brokered peace treaties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on Tuesday as the beginning of "a new Middle East" and signaled that the Trump administration is making progress in getting more countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia, to recognize Israel. His comments came hours after a White House ceremony, dubbed the Abraham Accords, marked the first Middle East White House peace signing in more than two decades. "I think we had a very good breakthrough. What's happened is in the Middle East, the deals have been so well received. That's what helped Bahrain go quickly. They saw how well the deal was received in the United Arab Emirates and throughout the Muslim world. The people in the region are tired of war," Kushner told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room.""They're tired of conflict. They...
By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – On Sunday in East Liberty, dozens of people gathered for a “Stop The Station” block party. The purpose of the block party was to voice their opposition to the relocation of the Zone 5 Police Station. The city is proposing to move the station from Washington Boulevard back to a building on North Euclid Avenue. It originally moved from there back in 2007. Members of the community say they don’t feel that bringing back police officers would benefit East Liberty. “We believe, as a coalition and as a community, that bringing the police closer to this park that we’re having a block party in today, is bad,” said Jalina McClarin. “This block is used by a lot of working-class Black families, kids, and having the police in such close proximity is simply a danger.” The “Stop The Station...
Former Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview Thursday that he would keep an enduring U.S. troop presence in the Middle East if elected president. “These ‘forever wars’ have to end. I support drawing down the troops. But here’s the problem, we still have to worry about terrorism and [the Islamic State],” Biden told military newspaper Stars and Stripes in a phone interview. Biden supports a “small U.S. military footprint” whose primary mission would be to facilitate special operations against the Islamic State in Iraq or Syria (ISIS), or other terrorist organizations, according to the paper. Biden said there should be a “maximum” of 1,500 to 2,000 on the ground, but did not specify where he meant. Trump has stated his goal is to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and bring home all U.S. troops. The Trump administration recently announced it was bringing home 2,200 U.S. troops...
Something extraordinary is happening in the Middle East — and for once, it is something good. Over the past several weeks, Arab and Muslim countries have been stepping forward to offer peace and good relations with Israel. First there was the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is establishing “full normalization” with the Jewish state, and will formalize an agreement at the White House later this month. Then there was Kosovo, which is establishing relations with Israel and putting an embassy in Jerusalem under the terms of a deal brokered by the Trump administration last week. Then Chad, a majority-Muslim nation, announced earlier this week that it will be putting an embassy in Jerusalem. Saudi Arabia announced that it will allow Israeli commercial flights above its airspace — not just to Dubai, but to all eastbound destinations. The Palestinian Authority tried to convince the Arab League to denounce the UAE’s peace...

French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraq’s President Barham Salihat greet each other with an elbow bump – GONZALO FUENTES/ REUTERS President Emmanuel Macron embarked on a high-stakes, headline-grabbing tour in the Middle East this week that has prompted claims France is seeking to re-activate its once-mighty “Arab policy”. Just as France relived the trauma of the al Qaeda-inspired Charlie Hebdo 2015 attack with the opening of the trial of alleged accomplices in Paris, Mr Macron descended on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. In his second visit in a month following the gigantic explosion that killed 190 and destroyed half the city, he wrested a promise from Lebanon’s discredited political class to conduct lightning reforms or face a funding drought or, worse, targeted sanctions. The 42-year-old then went on to pay a whirlwind, three-hour visit to Iraq, where he urged the battle-scarred country to assert its “sovereignty” in the face of US-Iran tensions...
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — People have been trying to predict the weather for a long time. Before we had radars, satellites in space and weather models, the only way to predict the weather was observation. Using what you’re seeing now, and the typical weather that follows an observation was pretty much the only way to predict the weather in the “olden days”. (Courtesy: Jilly Mook) At some point, people started coming up with rhymes to help remember what the observations would mean. One of the oldest is: “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning”. The saying, however, might not be as old as its origins. Quotes attributed to Jesus making a reference of using a red sky as a forecast appear in the Bible. (Courtesy: Pat Krnich) Matthew 16:2-3 reads: When it is evening, you say, “It will be fair weather; for the sky is...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York City public schools won’t be returning to in-person classes until Sept. 21, but that’s not the case for all the schools in New York City. New safety precautions are in place in both public and charter school classrooms. Students are adapting to the changes, and are happy to finally get back to class. School is already in session at the Greater Oaks Charter School on the Lower East Side. High fives are replaced with elbow bumps and things look a little different: Classes are cut in half, everyone must wear masks, follow safe social distancing rules and hand sanitation stations are everywhere. But for the 6th-8th grade students like Josiah Wells Williams, their enthusiasm for learning hasn’t changed. “I love education. And I love learning. So I was happy to come to school,” he told CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez. Principal Timberly Wilson gave Sanchez a...

SAN ANTONIO – Over 1,000 backpacks and 500 boxes of food will be distributed to those in need on the city’s East Side this weekend. The donations are all in honor of a woman known as “Mama Boone,” who devoted her life to caring for those who were less fortunate. Verna Mae “Mama” Boone passed away more than 10 years ago. Her son, Reverend James Robinson, is continuing her legacy by giving back to his community. The Milwaukee Bucks may be considered as one of the top favorites to bring home the Larry O’Brien Trophy this year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they would no longer search for major roster upgrade in the 2020 offseason. Regardless of the outcome of the 2019-20 NBA season, the Bucks are expected to find ways to address some of the major weaknesses of their team, including the point guard position. The 2020 free agency may not be as star-studded as the previous offseason, but there are plenty of big names who could be available on the trade market this fall, including Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors. In his recent article, Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report created a list of dream trade targets for every team in the 2020 offseason. For the Bucks, Swartz suggested that they should consider trading for Lowry. The 34-year-old floor general may already be...

No, Donald, they're not actually invisible. One of the nervous tics of the Donald Trump "administration" is a seeming obsession with new arms sales. Trump himself has boasted of and promoted the sales, and began doing so early on; he seems to regard weapons sales as something in his Professional Businessguy comfort zone, something with numbers attached, and hardball negotiations needed, and lots of opportunities for grifting around the edges. Because Donald does best with autocrats (and is generally contemptuous of, for example, NATO), most of the deals have targeted (sorry, bad turn of phrase there) the Middle East. The latest is a Trump administration plan to sell F-35 stealth fighters to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Yeah, go figure. No, Israel doesn't seem to be too happy about it—but nor are they objecting too strenuously, so we can presume a deal is afoot. From The New York Times, the...
Panola County, Texas (CNN)The Rougely family never believed the coronavirus was a hoax, but in the early days of the pandemic it was hard to imagine the virus could reach them deep in the piney woods of East Texas. After what they have been through, Covid-19 reminds them of springtime tornadoes indiscriminately sweeping across the Texas landscape -- the type of storms that slash through small towns, wiping out some families and homes while leaving others unscathed. Vearline and Raymond Rougely live twenty miles outside Carthage, Texas, -- a little place with a population just over 6,500 that calls itself the "Best Small Town in Texas." MOUNTAIN VIEW — A 407-unit apartment complex project poised to be one of the densest and tallest residential developments in the city is moving closer to actually being built after making several design changes. First proposed in 2018 as a 412-unit, 116-foot tall residential building on a 2.5-acre site at 400 Logue Avenue to replace a dilapidated suburban office park in the city’s East Whisman neighborhood, the project is likely to go through even more changes before it reaches the city council. But the building — now revised to stand 95-feet tall — is not the only high-density housing project the city is taking on: A 583-unit apartment complex on San Antonio Road is under construction, as are the 623-unit apartments under construction at California Street and San Antonio Road. But despite housing less people, neither project is as dense as the one Miramar Capital is proposing for 400 Logue Avenue....
Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night that he has ordered administration officials to “snap back” all sanctions on Iran, and again hawkishly pledged that the country “will never have a nuclear weapon.” The president opened a coronavirus briefing with the announcement, implementing an Obama administration policy that was part of an Iranian nuclear deal from which he withdrew the United States. This week, while all eyes have been on the Democratic National Convention taking place via Zoom, truly historic events have occurred in the Middle East: a long-awaited peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, including full normalization of relations; presumed peace deals to follow between Israel and Sudan, Oman and Bahrain; the possibility on the horizon of a similar deal with Saudi Arabia. These are not only historic events; they are unmitigated goods: the recognition of a Jewish state in the Middle East is the precondition to any peace in the Middle East. And the formation of a durable coalition to stave off the aggressive Islamism of Iran provides more stability and greater deterrence in the region. VideoIt's easy to tell whether these are historic events by identifying those who oppose them. Iran is particularly angry; so is Ben Rhodes, who served as former President Obama's deputy national...

President Donald Trump on Monday lauded last week’s treaty between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, declaring, “We’re doing peace in the Middle East.” “We made a deal with Israel and the UAE on Friday, it was essentially signed, and it was… it got great press, I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked,” Trump said in an interview on Fox & Friends. “First time in, really, 45 years — I guess they would say 25, but for different reasons it’s much longer than that — and now others are falling in line.” “We’re doing peace in the Middle East,” he declared. “We’re bringing our soldiers back home from Afghanistan. Scientists from the French National Centre for Scientific Research believe the remained found in present day Israel marked a cultural shift in funeral practices.   Excavations at the Neolithic site of Beisamoun in Northern Israel uncovered the ancient cremation pit that dates back to between 7013 BC and 6700 BC.  The remains of a corpse appear to have been intentionally incinerated as part of a funerary practice and are the oldest known cremation example in the region.  This is a picture of the right coxal in situ - preserved almost complete by a piece of collapsed mud wall during the fire that burnt the rest of the remains of the young adult The individual buried in the pyre-pit was injured...

Portland neighborhoods with mostly minority families and crowded public housing have higher rates of the novel coronavirus.  Stumptown has become a tale of two cities with blacks and Hispanics living east of 82nd Avenue, also known as Cascade Highway, at higher risk of contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.   An analysis from Willamette Week found that residents of this area were more than twice as likely to fall ill compared to those living west of 82nd. The towns with higher rates are far from where the nightly protests have been occurring, dispelling the myth that demonstrations are causing outbreaks. Health experts say that people of color are more likely to have a lack of healthcare access, more chronic health conditions and are work so-called 'essential jobs,' putting them at higher risk of exposure.   Neighborhoods east of 82nd Avenue in Portland have been seeing higher rates of...

Scientists have found new evidence of a massive tsunami that devastated ancient Britain in the year 6200 BC on the east coast of England.    The giant tsunami event, known as the Storegga Slide, was caused when an area of seabed the size of Scotland, around 30,000 square miles, under the Norwegian Sea suddenly shifted.  New geological evidence reveals three successive waves tore across an ancient land bridge connecting Britain with the rest of Europe, known as Doggerland, now submerged beneath the North Sea.   The waves of biblical proportions would have caused devastating damage and had a catastrophic effect on human populations on the inhabited land.   Evidence of the event had already been found in Scandinavia, the Faroe Islands, northeast Britain, and Greenland, but no direct evidence for the event had been recovered from the southern end of the North Sea until now.  Analysis of underwater deposits including stones and broken shells taken from...
This 2020 Main League Baseball season, ought to it really launch, will characteristic fewer video games, much less journey and fairly probably zero followers. Extra Yankees-Rays video games, tho (as the children spell it). Or not less than the next proportion of them. That might be good for baseball and, at greatest from a Bronx perspective, difficult for the Yankees. Most likely, it will signify the Yankees’ most important problem to a repeat of their AL East title. The small-market, stadium-challenged, little engines that would from Tampa/St. Pete have returned from their mid-2010s slumber to make life depressing as soon as extra for his or her wine-caving AL East neighbors in New York and Boston. Very like their earlier run, they seem geared up to stay round for some time. “It’s in our DNA to be the David to tackle the Goliaths,” Rays president Matt Silverman stated in a...
Several thousand demonstrators protested Friday in Paris and in several other French cities against the appointment this week to the government of Gérald Darmanin, accused of rape, and Eric Dupond-Moretti, very critical of the #MeToo movement. A rally was also held in Brussels. The government reshuffle that took place in France on Monday has promoted the head of the Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, 37, who was accused in 2017 of rape by a woman who had sought his intervention to settle a legal dispute in 2009 . “We are there to demand the resignation of a part of the government. CHICAGO (WLS) -- Bagels have been a constant at shops like New York Bagel and Bialy in Lincolnwood, or N-Y-C Bagel Deli in the city, but every now and then, another bagel maker comes onto the scene.Hand-rolling, boiling and baking are the keys to good bagels. Joe Gaglio should know. The New York native opened Gotham Bagels in Madison, Wisconsin 14 years ago, after years of lamenting the local options. More recently, he opened a small satellite tucked away in the kitchen of Eduardo's Enoteca, on the cusp of Gold Coast and Old Town, for online ordering only."Nobody rolls bagels by hand anymore. Nobody does it. And in New York they don't do it a lot," said Gaglio. His dough consists of unbleached flour, malted barley and brewer's yeast, plus charcoal-filtered water."We don't really want every bagel to be exactly perfect. We're not making widgets here. A lot of these chains...
Only in East Hampton do artists literally offer up free money on a silver platter. Later this summer, the interactive exhibit “Free Clean Money” — a collaboration by artist Katherine McMahon and musician Ray Angry, to be held at Guild Hall — will feature trays of $1 bills for guests to help themselves to, “with no … conditions,” said McMahon. Throughout the night — or, at least, as long as the $500 lasts  — she will routinely sanitize the currency with Lysol spray, while Angry performs his latest work, “The Protest,” on a nearby piano. The idea was “born out of this fantasy that money is free —  but money is never free or clean,” McMahon said. “[It] contends with the individual’s hardwired attraction to money, the hoarding of wealth, and an attempt at detachment from it.” The question is: Will Hamptonites be able to resist the bucks, or will...

(Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images) The Buffalo Bills should still be the favorites to win the AFC East in 2020 With Cam Newton signed, sealed and delivered to the New England Patriots, fans in Boston are already dreaming of another trip to the postseason and potentially to the Super Bowl. With all due respect to Newton, a former NFL MVP, are those fans kidding? While there’s plenty of excitement surrounding Newton and his move to the AFC East, let’s not pretend like the Pats are immediately the favorites to once again bring home the division title. You simply can’t just write off the Buffalo Bills, folks. FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd thinks Newton will help the Patriots win nine games and finish behind the Bills in the AFC East that suddenly could be a compelling race. “Sports are fun if you win… Nobody in New...
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Gov. Phil Murphy is delaying indoor dining for New Jersey, and on Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to make a decision on whether or not to delay indoor dining in New York City. Huge crowds of mostly maskless people ignoring social distancing outside bars and restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen, the Upper East Side and the East Village have left the governor wondering if indoor dining is a good idea right now. “I need the local governments to do the compliance. I know there’s a lot going on with the NYPD now, but they have to enforce it,” Cuomo said. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press secretary tweeted in response, “The mayor decided long ago that police aren’t the answer to social distancing; the Gov should heed our lesson.” The mayor decided long ago that police aren’t the answer to social distancing; the Gov should heed our...
