This is the story of a beautiful little girl, now 9, who loves princesses and unicorns and got a rough start in life. Her mother tested positive for drugs when she gave birth. She lived with her father, cared for by his mother, until her grandmother died. After that, no one vigilantly tended to her needs, though she was only a toddler. No one signed her up for school when she was old enough for pre-K. At 5½, she was removed from the care of her family by a social worker and police, and placed in the first of several foster homes. Stories like this one often gather sadness as they go. Children rescued from hardship often face more as they bounce through an overburdened system, rarely receiving undivided attention. But that isn’t this little girl’s story. This is a story about what can happen when serious attention is...
The Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division has issued a recall of products from AlpinStash, a wholesale recreational marijuana cultivation in Lafayette. According to the October 8 recall, issued in conjunction with the state Department of Public Health and Environment, marijuana grown by AlpinStash was found to have potentially unsafe levels of mold and arsenic, making it Colorado's first marijuana recall ever issued over heavy metals. Heavy metals such as arsenic, nickel, copper, mercury and cadmium can be found found in growing nutrients and fertilizers used to enhance the flavor, yield and potency of marijuana. According to the National Institutes of Health, long-term exposure to heavy metals can lead to liver or kidney damage, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, heart abnormalities, a disrupted nervous system, anemia and more. Recalled products should have a cultivation facility license number on their packaging: 403R-00603. Here are the recalled AlpinStash strains and their harvest dates:Related Stories...

The northern Colorado alt-rock band Holdfast hasn't let COVID-19 stop its creativity. With a new single coming out October 16 and a new album in January, the group has been keeping busy. The family trio comprises brothers Tommy Maddocks and Mikey Maddocks and their cousin Charlie Maddocks; the three have made a name for themselves over the years, and recently signed with a U.K. audio network called eOne. The partnership will allow their music to be picked up commercially, a huge step that inspired Tommy and Charlie to drop out of Colorado State University to devote themselves completely to the band. When restaurants were ordered to close to in-house customers last March, some never reopened. Wendell's, a breakfast eatery at 3838 Tennyson Street, was one of them. But rather than completely scrapping the diner, co-founder Kade Gianinetti sold it to new owners, who reopened Wendell's the last week of September. "We first looked at it on May 28, and we loved everything about it," says Casey Keller, who purchased Wendell's with her husband, Roy Benoit. Red Rock Amphitheatre has broken records in 2020: the fewest concerts ever, the most concerts played by an individual artist (Nathaniel Rateliff) and a group of artists (the Colorado Symphony), and the most times the venue has appeared to be closing down for the year...and then didn't. A few weeks ago, it looked like Red Rocks would be shuttered by Denver Arts & Venues by the end of September, with the staff furloughed and a roof-construction problem scheduled. But now the funk-ska-reggae-rock band Float Like a Buffalo has announced that it will be at Red Rocks on October 10, to headline a show with Fort Collins's Graham Good & the Painters. This is the second time that Float Like a Buffalo has played Red Rocks; the first time was back in July 2019, opening for FACE Vocal Band. Let’s cut to the chase. What’s the political fallout here? Right now, we’re partly still in the “let’s put politics aside and wish the president well” phase of responding to his announcement early Friday morning that he’s tested positive for the coronavirus. But let’s face it, we can’t not think about politics and the campaign. And at first blush, this does not seem a welcome development from the Trump perspective. I think to your average person, “guy refuses to wear mask, guy gets sick, this was waiting to happen” are the basic dots that are going to be connected here. First impressions stick, and for a lot of people, this will be the first impression, especially when the guy in question is 74 and overweight and has never been transparent about his health.

Surprise! Visit Denver just announced a surprise, first-ever fall Denver Restaurant Week -- but then, this year has been full of surprises, all brought on by the unpleasant surprise of the coronavirus pandemic. The first presidential debate on Tuesday night was, to put it lightly, a hot mess and a catastrophic disaster. But for some creatives, it put some of their own worst work in a new light. Hide Almost immediately after the debate ended, writer Jeremy Slater, whose resume includes The Exorcist TV show, The Umbrella Academy, and Moon Knight, took a shot at one of his own worst moves. Slater co-wrote the widely panned Fantastic Four film from 2015, a superhero movie that almost nobody would say is good. But as bad as that might be, it doesn’t compare to what happened last night. The emerging mainstream media consensus is, predictably, that Democratic nominee former Vice President Joe Biden won the first presidential debate of the 2020 campaign. The commentators and pundits also seem to agree that the debate was, to quote CNN's Dana Bash, a "s**t show." Headlines reported by CNN's senior media reporter Oliver Darcy describe the debate as "pure chaos" and "mayhem." President Donald Trump's performance in particular is under fire, variously being characterized as "monstrous," "abusive," "horrific," and a "disgrace." Leading a panel discussion after the debate, CNN's Jake Tapper called it "a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside of a train wreck." "That was the worst debate I have ever seen. It wasn't even a debate. It was a disgrace," Tapper said. "And it's primarily because of President Trump, who spent the entire time interrupting, not abiding by...

Last year, a telescope captured the very first image of an "unseeable" black hole, dazzling the scientific community and space enthusiasts alike with a static picture of M87*, the supermassive object at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy. Now, more images reveal that the black hole appears to be "wobbling" — a big surprise to researchers.  Since releasing the historic photo, scientists have studied archival data sets from 2019-2013 to better understand how the black hole behaves. They found the presence of a consistent shadow in the shape of a crescent — and noticed that it has rotated significantly over the last decade.  The brightness of M87* appears to be flickering over time, likely due to it expelling and consuming nearby matter that gets caught in its intense gravitational pull, scientists said in a new study published in The Astrophysical Journal. As the ring of gas, which is heated...

The list now features 154 new albums not previously on the 500 list, and 86 albums from this century. The change represents a massive shift for the magazine, moving to recognize more contemporary albums and a wider range of tastes. The Browns are back to their Browns ways, bringing some level of normalcy to 2020 Yes, 2020 has been a strange year to say the least, but we still have the Browns. Despite winning the offseason yet again, Cleveland is struggling in the first quarter of Kevin Stefanski’s debut. It doesn’t help that his first major coaching decision looked…like this. whypic.twitter.com/YAJGLV1tOP — PFF (@PFF) September 13, 2020 Sure, the fake punt itself is enough to make you question Stefanski. Down by one touchdown in just the first quarter, why bank on a gimmick to spearhead a comeback? What makes said play even worse, of course, is the fumble which comes after the fact. Never change, Cleveland. Next: Baker Mayfield reverses course on National Anthem
Tim Tebow turned the Denver Broncos against him by hogging the spotlight, with one staffer acidly calling him: 'The most self-centered humble guy I've ever met'. The quarterback destroyed his relationship to the Broncos management by being egotistical and money hungry despite his devout Christian faith, a new book claims. Tebow angered his bosses when he made a 'cottage industry' of speaking gigs and earning $50,000 for appearing at churches. During the 2011 season Tebow's evangelical followers sparked a nationwide wave of 'Tebowmania', fueled by his prayers at the sidelines of the playing field, that helped the Broncos get to the second round of the playoffs. But the Broncos thought Tebow was 'simply awful', sometimes comically so and they wanted rid of him. Pyrotechnics from a gender reveal party in Yucaipa sparked a wildfire and ignited an international firestorm of criticism and fierce cultural debate over a custom many say is toxic and dangerous — not least because the fire continues to rage. “I actually had a lot of people calling me asking if it was my gender reveal,” said Samantha Nguyen of Santa Ana, who learned she was having a boy at her own gender reveal celebration the next day. “Everybody messaged me like, ‘Oh my God, what have you done?’” The events have grown so extreme that even the Pasadena mom who originated them now regrets it. But that doesn’t mean they’re going away. Instead, gender reveals are hotter than ever, thanks in part to rapid advances in prenatal technology and a global health crisis that has compressed major rites of passage into Zoom meetings and TikToks. ...

By the start of September 1940, the Battle of Britain had been raging for almost two months and Hitler was frustrated that his enemy remained defiant.  In a speech on September 4, he announced the Luftwaffe was to change tactics. With two timeouts remaining, one would figure that was plenty of time to get some points on the board going into halftime.  Somehow it wasn’t.  Inexplicably, Middle Tennessee would get just two plays off without using either of its timeouts and go into the break without scoring any points. On first down, the shotgun snap got past Middle Tennessee quarterback Asher O’Hara. O’Hara scrambled to recover the loose ball, resulting in a 12-yard loss.  The Blue Raiders, without any...
Saturday's rescheduled Kentucky Derby is unique for a number of reasons — namely, it's being run in September without any spectators amid a global pandemic — but perhaps the most intriguing oddity can be found in the 17-horse field: the race's biggest betting favorite since 1992. Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has pegged Belmont Stakes champion Tiz the Law's odds at 3 to 5, making the stallion the Kentucky Derby's biggest favorite since Arazi entered the race at 4 to 5, only to finish in eighth. But unlike 1992, and every other year for that matter, the 146th Kentucky Derby is not the first leg of the 2020 Triple Crown. Instead, after being postponed from May for the first time since 1945, the Kentucky Derby is now the second frame of the horse racing's biggest prize, meaning the field is vastly more familiar to oddsmakers than ever before. Earth's supply of water didn't arrive with a bang from a comet or asteroid, researchers claim - it was likely here at the time our world first formed. A new study by the Centre de Recherches Petrographiques et Geochimiques, France, examined a meteorite called an enstatite chondrite for signs of hydrogen. Researchers discovered the space rock - composed of material found in the inner solar system - contained sufficient hydrogen to deliver at least three times the amount of water found in the Earth's oceans and probably considerably more. As this rock is made of the same material as the Earth, it suggests that when it formed 4.5 billion years ago it did so with the materials for water already present.  This goes against a leading theory that far-reaching space rocks came from the outer solar system and collided with the Earth to deliver our planet's water.   Researchers discovered...

In an unprecedented move, the James Beard Foundation announced Thursday that it has canceled the awards that for 30 years have honored the nation’s top chefs and restaurants, citing the pandemic-caused disruption to the industry. “The choice comes as restaurants continue to suffer the grave negative effects of COVID-19, and as substantial and sustained upheaval in the community has created an environment in which the Foundation believes the assignment of Awards will do little to further the industry in its current uphill battle,” the JBF said in a statement. Further, the foundation said, “The Awards’ usual positive impact on restaurants and chefs’ businesses will likely not be fully realized due to the current state of the industry, with many restaurants closed permanently or temporarily or operating at minimal capacity. These factors helped to inform the decision not to assign winners during a time of such turmoil.” The announcement comes just...

A 5,000-year-old clay tablet detailing beer ingredients and carrying the world's 'first ever autograph' has sold for £175,000 at auction. The tablet is said to be the earliest known record of any personal name in history – indicated by symbols translating as 'KU' and 'SIM' in the top left corner. Experts interpret these as spelling the name 'Kushim', possibly that of the government scribe who made the recording on the tablet for admin purposes. Other inscriptions on the object appear to depict how beer was produced at the Middle Eastern Inanna Temple in 3,100 BC and supposedly detail a beer-making transaction. The process of transforming barley or corn into beer and transporting it to the brewhouse is illustrated with primitive depictions of grains and bottles. The square 3-inch by 3 inch tablet, sold by London-based Bloomsbury Auctions, was made in the ancient city of Uruk, in modern day southern Iraq.  ...

For a night, anyway, the Mets paid homage to a mostly overlooked chapter in their history. It’s coming up on 21 years ago when Sports Illustrated put the four regular Mets infielders — John Olerud, Edgardo Alfonzo, Rey Ordonez and Robin Ventura — on its Sept. 6, 1999 cover, and asked in the accompanying headline: “The Best Infield Ever?” They were a show that summer, four slick-fielding glove men at the tops of their games, Ventura and Ordonez winning Gold Gloves, the other two in the conversation. It was right around that time when Al Leiter, after observing and admiring his infielders one hot summer night at Shea, smiled and shook his head. “They make pitching fun,” he said. Rick Porcello hadn’t had a lot of fun in his first two starts as a Met, lugging a 13.50 ERA into Nationals Park. But when Porcello is on, he induces contact,...

(CNN)When NASA's Perseverance rover touches down on Mars in February 2021, the mission will spend the next two years exploring one of the oldest and most intriguing sites on the red planet: Jezero Crater. It's the site of an ancient lake bed and river delta that existed between 3 and 4 billion years ago -- when Mars was warmer, wetter and habitable for potential life. Perseverance is NASA's first true astrobiology mission and the rover will search for signs of ancient microbial life. Oprah Winfrey has dedicated the cover of the latest issue of her magazine to Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT who was killed by police in Kentucky on March 13. It is the first time in its 20-year history that an O magazine cover has not featured Winfrey. The magazine has in the past featured other people on the cover alongside Winfrey – including Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGeneres. But the new cover features a solo shot of Taylor in a Louisville EMS shirt, which was recreated by 24-year-old artist Alexis Franklin, according to the O magazine Instagram page.   In an article for the magazine, Winfrey explains her decision: "Breonna Taylor. She was just like me. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter," Winfrey writes. Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images Injuries, pandemics, death, the potential crumbling of an institution, the potential rise of little brother —these past 10-12 months have been wonky. These past four months have mainly been filled with questions going unanswered starting at the top, lack of consistent knowledge, inability to obtain much Vitamin D, fear, paranoia and a lot more red wine drinking on my end. In unprecedented times of generic freedoms being stripped — the one that has left a big void in millions has been a lack of sport. Sports represent an escape. It gives people a sense of camaraderie and also gives humans a way to relate to one another, even if they are from other sides of the world. It’s truly a unifying institution. Never has something turned off the world quite like...

By Lauren Kent | CNN The first chicken to ever cross the road was likely in Southeast Asia, new research has revealed. Despite the prevalence of chickens — they outnumber all other birds on the planet with approximately 23 billion cluckers worldwide — centuries of scientists have struggled to determine exactly where they originated and how they were domesticated. Previous studies suggested that chickens were domesticated in northern China during the Neolithic era sometime around 8050 BC or the Indus Valley Civilization around 2000 BC, in what is now Pakistan and northwest India. Many scientists believed two separate origins — both India and China — also made sense. But now a new study published in the journal Cell Research has contradicted those findings. Scientists analyzed 863 genomes from a worldwide sampling of chickens and found that modern chickens descended primarily from ancient chickens that lived in what is now Myanmar,...
