quarterback:

(CBS4) – For Denver Broncos fans wondering who will be the starting quarterback when the 2021 season beings, one Las Vegas sportsbook says you should put all your money on Drew Lock. Drew Lock (credit: Evan Semón/CBS4) Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas gives Lock the best odds (4-5) to be the Broncos starting quarterback for the first game in the 2021 season. Coming in second is a quarterback from the 2021 NFL Draft (5-2) and tied for third is a trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson or New York Jets signal-caller Sam Darnold (8-1). Westgate SuperBook Executive VP Jay Kornegay tells CBS4 the difficulty in trading for a quarterback combined with the assets the Broncos would have to give up is the reason why Lock has the best odds to begin the season as the starter. Getty Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich thinks highly of his young coordinators. Frank Reich called Nick Sirianni “brilliant” in a previous interview. Now the Indianapolis Colts head coach — and former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator — has added a few more adjectives to the mix. Sirianni served as Reich’s offensive coordinator for three seasons in Indianapolis before the 39-year-old bolted for Philly. His old boss spoke like an adoring father, beaming with pride, in new comments to Colts beat reporters on Thursday about Sirianni. He is convinced that the Eagles have secured “one of the best offensive minds” in football. Frank Reich speaking on former OC Nick Sirianni, hired as the head coach in Philly. While he has not officially requested a trade, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has named the Dallas Cowboys as an acceptable trade destination. The relationship between the Seattle Seahawks and franchise quarterback Russell Wilson is super complicated at this point. Another 12-win season came to a screeching halt when the team took a tough 30-20 loss to their division rival Los Angeles Rams in last season’s playoffs. In the subsequent weeks, Wilson has been vocal about his disappointment in the team’s ability to protect him. The team’s offense has never really been built around his strengths, but his abilities have allowed him to get them the success that they’ve had to this point. Still, the Seahawks organization is not happy with Wilson & camp’s decision to go public with their criticisms. Now, it looks like Wison has provided the front office with a list of possible trade destinations and the...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — It’s already been a busy offseason for Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich. He’s said goodbye to longtime left tackle Anthony Castonzo and starting quarterback Philip Rivers; welcomed Rivers’ replacement in Carson Wentz; replaced offensive coordinator Nick Siriann i with the promotion of Marcus Brady; and hired six new assistants. Free agency and the draft are still to come. Yet amid all these moves, Reich is even more determined to solidify the component Indianapolis needs most: continuity. “I think you always feel like you’re going to play whatever cards you’re dealt and we’ll play them well,” he said Thursday on a video call. “But obviously the moves we make in free agency are designed to have a longer-term answer so you can grow as an offense. That’s always the plan.” Reich’s first three seasons in Indy haven’t exactly followed the script. The Colts opened each fall with...

Getty Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. Many fans have soured on Derek Carr as the quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders but that doesn’t mean he’s not respected around the NFL. There have been rumors that the team could get more than one first-round pick for the quarterback in a trade. There are a number of teams that would love to have Carr leading their team. Sports Illustrated’s Hondo Carpenter recently spoke with a few NFL general managers and they had some very strong thoughts on the Raiders’ quarterback. “I have been in this business a long time,” a general manager told Carpenter. “That is why I can understand the criticism thrown at Derek Carr — but it doesn’t make it right. Derek Carr wins ball games, he doesn’t lose them for Jon [Gruden] and I don’t think there is any doubt he is a Top 10-caliber...

Russell Wilson’s agent said something that is going to have Bears fans excited about a possible trade involving the quarterback. The relationship between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks seems to be deteriorating with each passing day. The warning signs began with Wilson speaking out about a lack of protection from the offensive line. This has now spiraled into trade rumors. Wilson has not come out and demanded a trade like Deshaun Watson. But his agent revealed to ESPN that Wilson does have some trade destinations in mind if it were to reach that point of no return with the Seahawks. Arguably the most fascinating team to show up on the list is the Chicago Bears. Seahawks’ QB Russell Wilson has not demanded a trade, his agent Mark Rodgers told ESPN. Getty Las Vegas Raiders HC Jon Gruden. Despite numerous reports stating that the Las Vegas Raiders plan to stick with quarterback Derek Carr for the 2021 season, nothing is guaranteed. The silver and black aren’t going to move the quarterback unless that can add a clear upgrade. Well, Deshaun Watson wants out of Houston and Russell Wilson could be ready for a change of scenery. Carr is a very good player, but he’s not on the same level as those two. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora recently reported that the Raiders would be interested in trading for Wilson if he was available. It now appears that the interest could be mutual, according to Michael-Shawn Dugar, Mike Sando and Jayson Jenks of The Athletic: But the Seahawks haven’t reached the NFC Championship game since 2014, and Wilson’s frustration has escalated to the point that his camp has broached potential...

Getty Russell Wilson reportedly gave the Seahawks his preferred trade destinations. Tensions between the Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson continue to rise as multiple reports have indicated early this offseason. The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, Mike Sando and Jayson Jenks penned a must-read article detailing the growing rift between Wilson and the Seahawks. Things have gotten so bad that “Wilson’s camp” gave the Seahawks a list of his four top trade destinations: Raiders, Jets, Saints and Dolphins. “Wilson and Carroll have won at least nine games in each of nine seasons together,” The Athletic explained. “They have made the playoffs every season but one, won a Super Bowl and lost another. But the Seahawks haven’t reached the NFC Championship game since 2014, and Wilson’s frustration has escalated to the point that his camp has broached potential trade destinations with the Seahawks. New York Jets linked to Russell Wilson trade rumors By: Brendan Carpenter February 25, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Jets have been linked to star quarterback Deshaun Watson for some time now. However, they are now linked to another star: Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. Trade rumors have been flying around the former Super Bowl-winning QB ever since he expressed his “frustration” with some of Seattle’s decision-making a few weeks ago. This, naturally, caused speculation around the league. “Some people around the league think a trade could happen, if not this offseason then sometime in the near future,” according to the initial report from The Athletic. The report has the Jets linked the situation, along with the Dolphins, Saints and Raiders. A trade is unlikely to happen, though, as Seattle will likely not ditch their franchise quarterback. The star quarterback led Seattle to...
Drafted 5th overall by the Miami Dolphins in 2020, Tua Tagovailoa was set to be the answer to the franchise’s long-standing quarterback woes. And it’s safe to say that the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback has shown promising signs of being just that. Coincidentally, his performances have also made him a fan favorite among the Miami Dolphins faithful. The NFLPA had released numbers for player merchandising sales just before Super Bowl LV, covering the period from March 1 to November 30 last year. While Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs took the first two slots, it was interestingly Miami’s rookie quarterback who slotted in at fourth position. Hip injury not an excuse for Tua Tagovailoa One quality that stands out in the young quarterback is his want to always be better. Over the course of the 2020 season, Tua talked about...

Some fans on the NFL teams are as hungry as the Seattle seahs. Even a die-hard 49ers fan can agree that playing a football game in Seattle is a threatening opportunity for the deaf roar coming from the stand. So, I hope all the conversations in this office were concerned that many in the Pacific Northwest wanted Russell Wilson to leave Seattle. It will be a hard pill to swallow, of course, but GM is not. If John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll happened to sell it, what would they say? Brandon Lee Gowton and I met at S.P. on Tuesday. We designed a case for the Nation NFL Show. Now, as always, Dak Prescott says he wants to be quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Seems simple. It isn’t. Not now. Not always. The 15-day window for NFL teams to place the franchise tag on possible free agents began this week. The tag essentially anchors a player to the club for another year at a predetermined amount — in the case of Dak/Dallas that’s about $37 million. The two sides have until March 9 to work out a long-term deal, but since this is the third consecutive offseason when they have negotiated a contract — failing twice already — there isn’t a lot of optimism even though neither wants to split up. This year, they’ll pick at number four, and Falcons GM Terry Fontenot said the franchise is open to “all possibilities.” “There are so many different scenarios,” Fontenot said via AtlantaFalcons.com. “There are going to be some really good players there at No. 4. We can move up, and we can move down and acquire more picks. There’s just a lot of different scenarios to really go through. It’s a prime spot to be in. It’s not somewhere that we want to be in very often with this team, but we are going to take advantage of that and be open to all possibilities.” The Falcons plan on taking their time, though...
Getty Carson Wentz and Nick Foles remain good friends and emnbraced Thursday at midfield. Nick Foles and Carson Wentz had inherently different personalities. Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson admitted as much in comments to the media last September when he talked about his approach to play-calling. Pederson is long gone, replaced by Nick Sirianni, but that hasn’t stopped the Wentz versus Foles debate from gaining traction. According to fan-favorite (Super Bowl champion) Chris Long, via the Green Light podcast, Foles simply had better command of the Eagles’ locker room. He made a conscious effort to reach out to both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. It’s something that has been touched on in previous reports but interesting to hear it from a guy who lived and breathed that amazing underdog Super Bowl run in 2017. Long was joined by another former Eagles player, Malcolm...
Getty Matt Ryan #2 of the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft in April and while several NFL analysts predict Atlanta will go for a top quarterback, two believe that would be a waste of time. During a recent NFL Network segment, analysts Brian Billick and Steve Wyche chimed in on why it wouldn’t make sense for the Falcons to draft a quarterback at fourth-overall. “Matt Ryan is a heck of a football player,” Billick said. “He had over 4,500 yards, 65 percent, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions on a bad, bad football team. If you extend the fourth pick to a quarterback, starting that clock on Matt Ryan, I think it’s a huge mistake.” The Falcons have made it obvious that Matt Ryan is sticking around for 2021 and they will be building around his...
Getty A Vikings insider recently weighed the odds that Minnesota trades away Danielle Hunter this offseason. The Minnesota Vikings have been in limbo since acquiring Kirk Cousins in free agency. Coming off an appearance in the NFC Championship game in 2018, the Vikings signed Cousins to secure a proven quarterback that could lead the team through a deep postseason run. But three years in, the marriage has produced menial results: one wild card playoff win. And Minnesota seems further from its ultimate goal of a Super Bowl. Speculation has grown of whether the Vikings will begin looking for its successor at quarterback. The Vikings could search free agency, the trade market or the draft for their future at quarterback. However, Star Tribune beat reporter Andrew Krammer isn’t high on any replacement quarterback coming to Minnesota or Cousins leaving in 2021. Instead, Krammer sees higher odds of another team...
The reality 49ers’ 2021 offseason is coming into view and it’s not going to get many folks excited. That’s not to say that it’s bad. No sir. It’s only to say that it won’t bring about the kind of intrigue and big names that many fans might be craving after a disappointing season. Two things stand out above all else ahead of NFL free agency opening on March 17: 1. Jimmy Garoppolo is going to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback in 2021, unless Deshaun Watson becomes available and… 2. The Niners’ free agency period is going to be about maintaining players, not adding them. Related Articles Inside the 49ers: Could childhood teams seriously snag free agents Juszczyk, Verrett? By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — From the moment that Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an injury in early November, thereby ending his 2020 season, speculation ran rampant that the 49ers would be looking to move on from their high-priced young QB. The fact that the Niners could cut or trade Garoppolo this offseason without taking a big hit on their salary cap made that possibility seem realistic. READ MORE: Gillette Stadium Hosting Hot Wheels Drive-Thru Experience Alas, whether it’s due to an inability to find an upgrade on the open market, or whether it’s due to an actual commitment to Garoppolo, or whether it’s due to the 49ers throwing out a big-time bluff while trying to negotiate a trade for some other quarterback currently with some other team, it seems as though San Francisco is intent on moving forward with Jimmy G. under center. 49ers GM John Lynch was...
Getty Las Vegas Raiders backup QB Marcus Mariota. It’s looking like that at least one Las Vegas Raiders quarterback is going to get traded this offseason. However, it’s probably not going to be Derek Carr. Most recent reports have indicated that the Raiders plan to stick with their longtime starter. If that ends up being the case, the team can’t afford to keep both Carr and Marcus Mariota on the roster. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it sounds like there’s very little chance Mariota is back on the team. “Based on my knowledge right now, I would be very surprised if he is on the Raiders for the 2021 season,” Rapoport reported recently. “The Raiders have gotten some offers for him and it sounds like there’s probably been enough interest in Mariota … that he is likely to not be on the team. The rumor mill has been rife with speculation surrounding the future of Ben Roethlisberger with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The quarterback on the wrong-side of 30 showed signs of age finally catching up to him over the course of the 2020 season. Starting off the season with a perfect 11-0 record, the Steelers quickly collapsed once teams figured out their short pass game. Their lack of a running game meant that more pressure fell on Roethlisberger to make the big plays. Something that ultimately ended up being too much to handle for Big Ben as the Steelers crashed out in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs. Since then, many felt that Roethlisberger had played his last snap for the franchise that drafted him back in 2004. But going by recent developments, Ben Roethlisberger is set to stay under center in Pittsburgh for 2021. Ben Roethlisberger set to stay with...

But King has attacked his rehab and cleared every medical checkpoint and is expected to be ready for the start of the season. Miami finished 8-3 and third in the ACC behind Clemson and Notre Dame last season. This week, the conference informed athletic department officials via email that the 2021 schedule could be released next week, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the internal communication. However, the week of March 8 — the week of the Pac-12 basketball tournament — is viewed as perhaps the more likely window, the sources indicated. Why the additional delay? As of Tuesday afternoon, the conference had yet to distribute schedule models to the athletic directors and coaches for review and voting. That process can take at least a week and sometimes longer if consensus is elusive and revisions are required. “We haven’t seen anything,” a source said. Getty The Seattle Seahawks may have a price for trading Russell Wilson. The Seattle Seahawks may be listening to team’s calls more than originally thought as new details are emerging about the organization’s talks about the availability of Russell Wilson. NFL Network’s Mike Silver reported the Seahawks’ asking price in any potential trade would start with three first-round picks, adding that general manager John Schneider is not hanging up the phone when teams call about their franchise quarterback. “Russell Wilson clearly made a concerted effort to convey some things after the season, and the Seahawks are staying quiet but internally they got the message,” Silver explained on NFL Network. “They’re not thrilled that their quarterback felt that way and teams have been calling. Credit: Katelyn Mulcahy/Getty Images The Los Angeles Chargers don’t necessarily have to cut any notable names this offseason, but these three players could be surprise cuts. The Los Angeles Chargers finished just 7-9 last season, but a four-game winning streak sent them into their offseason on a good note. They’ll have a new head coach in former Rams’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, which should be a good thing after the Anthony Lynn era grew stale. With a star young quarterback on a his rookie contract in Justin Herbert, the Chargers are in a nice position. Even with the lower salary cap that’s coming, they have about $23.8 million in cap space right now (according to Over The Cap, $180.5 million cap projection). With one especially notable in-house free agent, tight end Hunter Henry, having room to operate financially will be nice. Henry has already been open about his desire to...

Left guard Will Hernandez, the Giants’ second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, regressed dramatically in 2021. Hernandez allowed just one sack, but also 25 total pressures and five quarterback hits in 525 snaps. He was also eventually benched in favor of fifth-round rookie Shane Lemieux, who was a colossal disappointment, producing a 32.2 overall grade from PFF in 504 snaps. Stabilizing the offensive line in front of quarterback Daniel Jones, in his make-or-break third NFL season, as well as creating running lanes for Saquon Barkley, are among the Giants’ top priorities. If the NY Giants are not sold on Lemieux developing into a long-term solution at guard (and at this stage, why would they be?), Thuney makes some sense. Likewise, if...

Getty Charlie Weis What will the New England Patriots do with the No. 15 pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft? That might be one of the biggest mysteries of the draft as we sit just over two months away. By the time the draft rolls around, the Patriots might have already addressed the starting quarterback position. There might be a trade for a big name like the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson or a second-tier option like the Las Vegas Raiders or the San Francisco 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo. Perhaps we’ll see a free-agent signing of a guy like Jameis Winston or Mitchell Trubisky. There is also the chance Cam Newton could be back as the team’s starter.  It would be a surprise if the Patriots don’t draft a quarterback at all, but it wouldn’t be a complete shock if Bill Belichick elected not to use his first-round selection on...

From a fantasy football perspective, the two major quarterback trades made this off-eason will have a minimal impact in 2021. Three big names have been traded in the NFL already. None have a massive fantasy football impact. In the cases of Jared Goff, Carson Wentz and Matthew Stafford, none have been elite fantasy starters. They pale in comparison to someone like Deshaun Watson, who finished No. 5 in fantasy football rankings of quarterbacks, and yet the Houston Texans won four games. Watson, a Tier 1 quarterback — anybody expected to score more than 21 fantasy points consistently — will have a major impact on fantasy football and the NFL if/when his demand to be traded is completed. None of the three quarterbacks dealt to new teams this offseason are Tier 1 quarterbacks. The best of the bunch was Wentz in 2019 when he was statistically one of the better Tier...
