London (CNN Business)A wave of anxiety is sweeping through stock and bond markets as investors prepare to enter a new phase of the pandemic. What's happening: Concerns are growing that a strong economic recovery later this year will cause a spike in inflation. That's sparked a selloff in government bonds. When prices fall, yields rise, which weighs on stocks. Without a sharp bump on Friday, the S&P 500 — which has dropped in the last three trading sessions — will notch its third consecutive week of declines, as the yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury moves back toward 1.6%. "With the Covid-19 vaccine allowing for economic activity to be restored, coupled with fresh injections of fiscal stimulus in the pipeline, investors are holding on to the narrative that inflation could make a roaring comeback," FXTM market analyst Han Tan told clients on Friday. In recent days, Wall Street has become laser-focused...

"Cancel." At no point in history has that word been so popular as it has been in the last year. From weddings to graduations, March Madness to the Masters, it seems as if nearly everything was canceled.   But there are some things in this life that can never be canceled. God’s love. The inherent value He assigns to each and every human being. The work being done around the world in His name.  There is no doubt that ministry looks different now than it did pre-pandemic, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. But the mission has not changed. If anything, it is now more critical than ever, which is why we can never stop fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves.   JANICE DEAN: 'MAKE YOUR OWN SUNSHINE' -- WHAT I'VE LEARNED ABOUT KINDNESS AND GOODWILL IN A TOUGH TIME Thankfully, we serve a God for whom nothing is too big....

this year already has kind of a Sisyphean vibe tbh We’re approaching the year mark of everything shutting down because of the coronavirus, and everything remains … well, kinda terrible. Sure, the vaccine news is increasingly good, the days are getting longer, and warmer weather has begun to show its face in some parts of the country. But most legislatures are still in session (48, in fact), and most legislatures are controlled by Republicans, so mostly lousy bills are getting passed. Too bad those lawmakers aren’t as preoccupied with defending Neanderthals and plastic potato toy genders as many of their conservative ilk. Except … they kind of are preoccupied with gender right now. It’s been five years (to the month!) since the GOP-controlled North Carolina legislature passed the notorious HB 2, a drastic and discriminatory response to a local ordinance in Charlotte that permitted transgender folks to use the bathroom corresponding with...

(Photo by Frederick Breedon/Getty Images) Mike Vrabel’s team has to find a way to fix its shoddy defensive unit. One year after reaching the AFC Championship Game as a wild card team, the Tennessee Titans won their first division title since 2008. But this time around, Mike Vrabel’s team with one-and-done in the postseason as they were stifled by the visiting Baltimore Ravens, 20-13, in the first round of the playoffs. The club got a big offensive year thanks to quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who picked up where he left off in 2019, as well as running back Derrick Henry. The latter led the league in rushing yards for the second year in a row with a gaudy 2,027 yards and captured NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors. Then there’s the Tennessee defense, one of the worst units in the league. The club scored 491 points and gave up 439...

Thousands of American lives have been lost to the novel coronavirus this past year, but one historically lethal illness has taken a backseat this season: the flu, which, according to federal health estimates, has killed only one child this year.  For context, nearly 200 pediatric lives were lost during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  There have been just 1,499 clinical laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza this year, per estimates from the CDC, which also shows that flu-related hospitalizations are significantly lower this season compared to seasons past.  Between Oct. 1 — the start of flu season — and Feb, 20, there have been some 183 laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalizations, representing an overall cumulative hospitalization rate of 0.6 per 100,000 population, per the CDC.  CDC SEES RECORD FLU VACCINE DISTRIBUTION "This is much lower than average for this point in the season and lower...

A NEW Nintendo Switch model with major upgrades is coming later this year. That's according to a new report that claims Nintendo will launch its first 4K console in 2021. 2The Nintendo Switch has been out for around four years, so an upgrade is dueCredit: Nintendo The original Nintendo Switch launched back in 2017, to phenomenal success. Gamers were enamoured with the two-in-one console that worked as a handheld device – and plugged into the telly too. The console is regularly sold out around Christmas, and is now one of the most recognisable gaming machines in the world. But a new Bloomberg report says that a second, even better version of the Nintendo Switch is on the way. The console is expected to feature a larger OLED panel built by Samsung. Unlike traditional LED-backlit LCD screens, an OLED display has pixels that illuminate themselves. 2Nintendo consoles are the only way...
A new Nintendo Switch is coming this year, according Bloomberg. The report reinforces rumors about the “Switch Pro” despite the company denying the launch of new hardware in the short term. However, the aforementioned media affirms that, according to sources close to the production chain, those in Kyoto plan to present and launch a renewed version of the console during 2021. Obviously, the proposal would come with some technical news. First, Bloomberg makes mention of one OLED display made by Samsung. The South Korean manufacturer will begin mass production of a panel of 7 inches with 720p resolution. It is important to remember that the current model integrates a 6.2 ″ LCD screen, so we would see a significant increase in its dimensions. Not so in the resolution; The two versions of the Nintendo Switch that we currently find also offer a 720p experience in portable mode. The information therefore...

Just a few hours ago we were celebrating the fourth birthday of Nintendo switch. Predicting, incidentally, a fifth year full of successes and news. Well, it seems that, or at least that is what the rumors suggest, that things are pointing strong … And is that Bloomberg, a well-known American media specialized in offering financial information, has published an extensive article in which it states that Nintendo plans to present a new model Nintendo Switch equipped with a bigger screen, signed, neither more nor less than by the giant Samsung and its technology OLED. The strategy, according to said media, happens because this new model boosts sales in the face of last leg of 2021. The rest of the competition models are newer and the wear of the hybrid could show during its fifth year. The panel in question will be 7 inches, compared to the current 6.2 ″ (5.5...
Gov. Gavin Newsom is in “advanced talks” with Major League Baseball about allowing some fans to attend games this season, bolstering the cautious optimism among some that the Dodgers and Angels could at least partially fill their stadiums this summer after entertaining cardboard cutouts last year. Newsom made that comment during a visit to a Cal State Long Beach vaccination site Wednesday, March 3, less than a week after spring training games began. The regular season begins April 1. The coronavirus pandemic forced MLB to delay its season last year. And once it did begin, it was severely truncated — a 60-game sprint rather than the traditional 162-game marathon. Fans were also deprived of the annual summer rite of sitting in sun-soaked stands, eating a hotdog and peanuts, and watching their favorite baseball teams, particularly the Dodgers, Angels and San Diego Padres among Southern Californians. Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded model of the Switch this year with an OLED screen, according to a new report in Bloomberg. The report says Samsung Display is providing the screen, which will be a 7-inch 720p rigid OLED panel set to go into mass production this June. The current Switch has a 6.2-inch 720p LCD panel, while the Switch Lite’s screen is a 5.5-inch 720p LCD. Many Switch games struggle to hit native resolution in handheld mode, so the lack of an upgrade in resolution isn’t really a surprise. Bloomberg’s report does note, however, that the new Switch model will be capable of 4K graphics when hooked up to a TV, so the decision to stick with 720p in handheld mode could also be about preserving battery life. The report doesn’t state a possible release date for the new Switch, but Bloomberg’s sources say that it’ll come...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Members of Virginia's House of Delegates have collectively racked up more than $800,000 in per diem stipends that cover expenses that include travel and food. The Virginian-Pilot reported Tuesday that the payments have been a frequent source of partisan debate because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some House Republicans have said it’s wrong to accept stipends for expenses while working virtually. And three Republicans — Kirk Cox, Nick Freitas and Bobby Orrock — have said they won't receive them. But some Democrats have pointed out that the money is subject to income taxes this year. That's opposed to years past when the expenses were considered nontaxable reimbursement for most lawmakers. House delegates are paid a salary of $17,640 a year. They also get expenses of $211 a day during the legislative session. The money is intended to cover lodging, meals and incidentals. The money is non-taxable for...
Q: I heard that the RMD rules have changed? Is that true? – Kenny in Memphis A.: Have the RMD rules changed? Yes, they have changed, will change again in 2022 and may again after that. Last year, in response to COVID-19, the CARES Act waived required minimum distributions (RMD) for 2020. So, the first change is that RMD are back for 2021 under the rules that were in effect at the beginning of 2020. Tax & Retirement Tips You may remember that 2020 started with a pair of notable changes from past RMD rules in 2019’s SECURE Act. First, the age at which RMD first applies was changed from 70½ to 72. Second, except for a few types of beneficiaries such as spouses, the so-called “stretch” capability of beneficiaries inheriting retirement accounts was eliminated. In its place, was a new 10-year payout requirement. The new 10-year rule applies only...

HOLLY Willoughby's career is set to sky rocket this year – but it could be without co-host Phillip Schofield according to a guest on This Morning. Astrologer to the stars Hagan Fox appeared on the show to give the presenters a reading for the year ahead. 4Phillip Schofield was horrified when an astrologer read his future and said his co-host Holly Willoughby had 'all the luck' in the year ahead Having checked their birthdays on his Chinese numerical chart, he gave Holly, 40, some good news first. He said: "Oh well I'm afraid Phil, Holly has nailed it this year. With recognition. She's got all the love coming. Really, if you had any luck Phil, Holly has taken that as well. JOSH TAYLOR’S brave bid to travel to America in May to become undisputed super-lightweight world champion should kick off a summer of similar showdowns. Remember when Tyson Fury was stripped of his hard-earned IBF crown barely a few days after incredibly dethroning Wladimir Klitschko - just for agreeing to a rematch with the 11-year-champion? Or the WBC’s decision to make franchise, emeritus, interim and ‘in-recess’ versions of their world champions, to bag...
A recently discovered comet named Leonard could be the brightest of 2021 when it gets closer to the sun at the end of the year - and may even be visible with the naked eye. The object, catalogued as C/2021 AI, was discovered by astronomer Gregory J Leonard on January 3 at the Mount Lemmon Infrared Observatory in Arizona. When it was first spotted, the comet was 'exceedingly faint', a 16 magnitude object, about 160,000 times dimmer than the faintest stars that can be seen with the naked eye.  However, by the time it gets to Earth's orbit later this year, it will be magnitude four or five. It is getting brighter all the time as it gets closer to the sun, and is currently between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter - expected to be closest to Earth on December 12 when it will be about 35 million km...

NateDrake, a recognized industry insider, ensures that the Big N will announce a new Switch as early as this year. Supposedly, this new console will use the technology of NVIDIA DLSS and it will have 4K functionality, as previously reported: “I will not say more about the technical specifications. Use DLSS with 4K functionality. There is no reason to divulge more than that. That is enough to show that it is a substantial improvement. First-party games will be built around this new hardware and will continue to come out on the regular Switch for at...

The winter storms that dumped heavy snow and rain across California early in 2021 are likely not enough to negate what will be a critically dry year, state water officials believe. California’s Department of Water Resources on Tuesday recorded a snow depth of 56 inches and water content of 21 inches at Phillips Station in the Sierra Nevada. The water content of the overall snowpack was 61% of the average for March 2 and 54% of the average for April 1, when it is historically at its maximum. Surveys of the Sierra snowpack, which normally supplies about 30% of California’s water, are a key element of the department’s water-supply forecast. December, January and February are typically the wettest part of the “water year,” which starts Oct. 1. In January, when L.A. should have received 3.12 inches of rain, only 2.44 inches fell. Without any serious storms...

Bloomberg Fear of being overshadowed by China drives Japan Olympics (Bloomberg) – There are many reasons why Japan is determined to hold the Tokyo Olympics this summer, once postponed, but the reason is rarely discussed in public: China. Next year, Beijing will host the The Winter Games, and China has made it clear that it plans to move forward after having largely managed to contain the pandemic within its borders. That has caught the attention of Japanese government officials, who have been citing increased publicity for it. Last year’s Cinequest may have been the last “normal” outing for the thousands of people who attended the film and creativity festival in March. As COVID-19 flared up and Santa Clara County moved toward a stay-at-home order, founders Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell made the prudent decision to postpone the festival’s second week. Now, a full year later, we are still not anywhere close to returning to “normalcy” — and who knows when we will — but Cinequest is coming back with a virtual edition to fit the times. That means there won’t be any in-person screenings or parties, but movie lovers will get to watch a big lineup of the independent films Cinequest is known for. Cinejoy, as the online edition is being called, will run March 20-30, with more than 150 U.S. premiere and world premiere movies featured in the Showcase lineup and a dozen high-profile movies in...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It’s been more than 45 years since a teenager last recorded a hit for the Giants, but that streak could soon be in jeopardy. Giants shortstop prospect Marco Luciano isn’t likely to make his major league debut this season, but it’s not out of the question the 19-year-old could force his way into the picture. If Luciano arrives before his 20th birthday, Sept. 10, he’ll have a chance to become the first Giants player since Jack Clark to pick up a base hit as a teen. Regarded by several outlets that evaluate prospects as the top player in the Giants’ farm system, Luciano will start Tuesday’s televised Cactus League matchup against the Dodgers. Because he’s batting ninth, the Dominican Republic native probably won’t face 2019 All-Star Walker Buehler. But with Dustin May set to follow the Dodgers’ starter on Tuesday at Scottsdale Stadium, there’s...
Highlighting the second dry winter in a row, the Sierra Nevada snowpack on Tuesday was just 61% of its historical average for this date, the latest signal that California appears headed toward summer drought conditions, with water restrictions possible in some areas for the first time in five years. The last major storm system in the state was more than a month ago, when an atmospheric river drenched the Bay Area and Central Coast in late January. Weeks of unusually sunny, dry weather came before it, and have come since. As a result, this winter is shaping up to be similar to 2014, state water officials said Wednesday, a year when California was firmly in the middle of its historic 2012-2016 drought. “Absent a series of strong storms in March or April we are going to end with a critically dry year on the heels of last year’s dry conditions,”...
The last February 27 it was 25 years since the launch of Pokémon in Japan. By the same coincidence, year after year Pokémon Day is celebrated on that date, but this year was special for having reached the quarter of a century and the entire community was aware of the franchise. One day before The Pokémon Company took the opportunity to reveal the immediate future of the video game saga with the announcements of the Sinnoh remakes – with a style very different from what we are used to and much more similar to the original – and a new approach to Pokémon with an open world game that seems to be loaded with much more lore. On Saturday, however, It was time to look back and from Movistar eSports we wanted to pay tribute to 25 years of Pokémon with a special live program in which we have guests...

But that stretch of success ended with a resounding thud this past year as the club dropped a 4-12 and third place in the division. Head coach Bill O’Brien was dismissed after a 0-4 start in 2020. This offseason has already been one of major changes. Nick Caserio is now the general manager and David Culley is the new head coach. In terms of player departure, 10-year veteran J.J. 'This wasn't a fender bender,' the attorney, Tom Porto, told Good Morning America. 'This was a serious, life-altering event.'  Porto said he and the family will advocate for 'the most serious charges and the most serious sentence that Britt could ever receive'.  Britt, a former linebackers coach for the Chiefs' and son of head coach Andy Reid, allegedly admitted that he had been drinking before he struck two cars on the side of an entrance ramp to Interstate 435, near the team's practice facility.  Porto...
The World Health Organization has warned that it’s “unrealistic” to expect the COVID-19 pandemic to end this year. Dr. Michael Ryan, director of WHO’s emergencies program, said the focus should remain on keeping transmission levels as low as possible, though it’s unlikely that the virus will be eradicated this year. “I think it will be very premature and I think unrealistic to think that we’re going to finish with this virus by the end of the year,” Ryan said Monday at a briefing in Geneva, Switzerland. “If we’re smart, we can finish with the hospitalizations and the deaths and the tragedy associated with this pandemic.” Ryan, however, said the organization is encouraged by data indicating that COVID-19 vaccines have helped slow the spread of the virus. (CNN)Democrats are reintroducing legislation to expand background checks on all commercial gun sales, the first congressional move on significant gun control since Democrats won the White House and the majority in both chambers of Congress. The bill, called the Background Check Expansion Act, would expand background checks for all firearm sales or transfers in the country. Currently, background checks are not required for gun sales and transfers by unlicensed and private sellers. The issue was a major Democratic priority that President Joe Biden campaigned on in the 2020 election. The likelihood of actually passing the bill remains a longshot, as Democrats hold a slim 50-50 majority in the Senate and would need significant Republican support to overcome a legislative filibuster. Congress has struggled for years to pass any meaningful gun safety reforms. But universal background checks have been one of the few plans that have actually garnered some bipartisan support."Obviously this isn't going...
Medical experts are huddling up to help the 49ers re-open Levi’s Stadium this coming season, presuming COVID-19 case rates drop and Santa Clara County gives the green light. The 49ers unveiled an advisory committee this morning to determine the safest measures so they and perhaps fans can return to their home field. Last season, no fans were allowed into Levi’s Stadium, and the 49ers relocated to Glendale, Ariz., for their final month (and three home games) because of Santa Clara County’s ban on contact sports amid a COVID-19 surge. Levi’s Stadium opened last month as a vaccination site for county residents. “Opening Levi’s Stadium as a mass vaccination site was just the first step in doing our part to protect our community,” 49ers president Al Guido said in a statement. “As vaccinations continue and preparations begin for the return of fans at Levi’s Stadium, we want...

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The system, which has held classes in multiple formats since the pandemic began a year ago, said in a statement that current models show it should be safe to resume traditional teaching after the summer break. Millions more should have the vaccine against the new coronavirus by then. Dr. Selwyn Vickers, the medical dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and chair of the system pandemic task force, said leaders will continue trying to make decisions based on data and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state health agency. “If safety concerns arise, we can adjust our plan; the safety of the 110,000 students, faculty...
It’s March, which means Nintendo will soon pull a handful of games released specifically for anniversary celebrations. Switch owners have until the end of this month, March 31st, to grab games before the developer pulls them off the eShop. That includes Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Super Mario Bros. 35, Game & Watch Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Similar to Disney’s infamous “vault” tactic — offering films for a limited time before they’re stuffed back into a metaphorical vault and become impossible to get — Nintendo announced last year that it would only offer certain games until this year. It’s unclear if the developer will rerelease these games further down the road or if they’ll remain unavailable indefinitely. Nintendo continues to celebrate Mario’s 35th anniversary with different events and cross-promotions. Last month, it released an update in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that...

iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro MaxTodd Haselton | CNBC Apple is preparing four new iPhones for release in the second half of this year that resemble the current lineup of iPhone 12 models, TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in a note to investors on Monday. The 2021 iPhones could include a smaller notch, increasing the phone's usable screen space. (The notch at the top of the screen is the area that houses the Face ID camera system.) They will also have larger batteries thanks to a new internal space-saving design, improved 5G modems and better cameras, according to the note. Still, Kuo predicts that the 2021 iPhones will be the same size as the current phones: a "Mini" device with a 5.4-inch screen, two models with 6.1-inch screens and a "Max" model with a 6.7-inch screen. They will continue to have a proprietary Lightning connection for data...
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Some maple producers in New Hampshire are welcoming visitors this season, with coronavirus-related restrictions in place. March is considered Maple Month in New Hampshire, with open houses held at maple businesses. The state's “Maple Weekend" is March 20-21. Most operations had to close last year when the pandemic started, but this year, some will allow limited visitors, with social distancing, face masks, and other requirements. Just Maple at Green Acres Farm in Tilton said its gift shop will be open daily, and “we can welcome...
By Gwladys Fouche OSLO (Reuters) - Some 329 nominations have been received for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, likely reflecting the profusion of pressing human rights issues around the world, the secretary of the committee which awards the prize said on Monday. "It is the third highest ever total number," Norwegian Nobel Committee Secretary Olav Njoelstad told Reuters. The record was 376 candidates, reached in 2016. Of this year's total, some 234 are for individuals and 95 are for organisations. "It reflects a lot of international interest in the Nobel Peace Prize," he said. "It probably also reflects that there are a number of unsolved conflicts, wars and human rights problems around the world." The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not comment on who is nominated, but nominators, who range from members of parliaments worldwide to former winners, can choose to reveal their picks. Russia's Alexei Navalny, the World Health Organization...
CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk.Brendan McDermid | Reuters Electric vehicle stocks could climb up to 50% this year, according to Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives, who thinks there's enough room in the market for more than just Tesla. "In my opinion EV stocks could be up another 40- 50% this year, given what we're seeing in terms of a green tidal wave globally," Ives told CNBC's "Street Signs Europe" Monday. "I think right now it's a big enough ocean for more than one boat," said Ives. "It's not just going to be Tesla's world." Ives said he expects the electric vehicle industry to grow into a $5 trillion market over the next decade; in 2020, market research firm Fortune Business Insights valued it at around $250 billion. He's also bullish on the outlook for traditional automakers, as well as pure electric vehicle makers like Tesla. "This is really going to be what...
An estimated timeline for when children and teens will be able to get COVID-19 vaccinated was recently laid out by Dr. Anthony Fauci. Some of the youngest children won’t be vaccinated until 2022. On Sunday, Feb. 28, Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that high school students could begin receiving the vaccine in the fall. Younger children, he said, will likely have to wait until early next year. During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Fauci said that more research needs to be done to make sure the available COVID-19 vaccines are safe for children. There are now three vaccines being distributed in the U.S. They are manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and the most recently approved vaccine is by Johnson & Johnson. "If you project realistically when we'll get enough data to be able to say that elementary school children...

A look at some of the key business events and economic indicators upcoming this week: SPOTLIGHT ON CONSTRUCTION The Commerce Department issues its latest tally of U.S. construction spending Monday. Economists project that spending increased by a modest 0.7% in January. That would follow a 1% increase in December, as strength in spending on residential projects, particularly single-family homes, offset a sustained weakness in nonresidential construction. VIDEO1:1401:14Economist David Rosenberg: 'This bond market is so radically oversold'Trading Nation Economist David Rosenberg says he made a career by not following the herd, and his bond forecast could be considered the latest example. According to the Rosenberg Research president, this year's rate yield shock surrounding the benchmark 10-year Treasury Note is temporary. "This bond market is so radically oversold," Rosenberg told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Friday. "We're going to peel back to 1%." The 10-year yield ended the week at 1.41%. It's now up 55% so far this year and is around 52-week highs. The yield moves inversely to debt prices. The overwhelming fear on Wall Street is the jump is due to inflation rather than a temporary demand surge linked to the economic recovery. "The problem I have with that view is that all this stimulus is temporary in nature and rolls off next year when we face...

In times when it seems that without an innovation it is enough for the consumer, for some brands such as Adidas the strategy has focused on associating with certain brands that enjoy special relevance in the market and launching special editions that in the eyes of certain collectors and loyal consumers are a success. Last October, for example, Adidas and Lego announced an alliance where the sports brand would launch a special edition of tennis shoes inspired by the color and structure of the well-known toy blocks. This association was confirmed after a series of rumors and although details are still scarce, this special collection is expected to generate great interest among Lego lovers. The shoes in question came under the model name ZX 8000 from Originals, whose color palette is inspired by all of the Lego pieces. This new product would be part of the A-ZX project, which promoted...

For much of the country, Easter Sunday typically falls during a time of year when the weather outside is still pretty chilly. But this year Easter falls on the third Sunday in April, increasing the chances that temperatures will be more spring-like and less reminiscent of winter. Warmer temperatures on Easter Sunday means hosts tasked with cooking Easter dinner might be able to expand their culinary horizons and avoid the stove. Though they might not have considered it before, hosts might want to fire up their smokers to give their families something delicious and different to dine on this Easter Sunday. If the weather takes an unexpected turn for the worse, electric smokers can typically be used indoors, but check the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm that. Big meals are part and parcel for Easter Sunday, this recipe for “Pork Loin Roast with Hot Pepper Jelly Glaze” from Karen Putman and...
