The end of the tunnel is not for tomorrow. After a very slight increase in the business climate (+1 point), the composite flash index published by the firm Markit on Friday, January 22 fell to 47 in January against 49.5 in December. Private sector activity declines when this indicator is below 50 and expands above this threshold. The tightening of containment measures in recent weeks with the generalization of the curfew to all departments, the multiplication of variants and the repeated problems in the logistics chain of vaccines have dampened hopes of a rapid recovery. The arrival of the vaccine had suggested a way out of the crisis but the persistence of the virus and the still high hospitalizations oblige the executive to strengthen these measures to stem the spread of this virulent disease. ” The 2021 outlook will depend on the evolution of the health crisis. The particularity...
January 22, 2021 9:00 AM | With information from EFE 15 minutes. Russia welcomed the willingness of the president of the United States (USA), Joe Biden, to extend for 5 years the New Start treaty, the only nuclear disarmament treaty still in force between the two countries and that expires on February 5. “Without a doubt, we can only salute the political will to prolong this document. But it all depends on the details of this proposal, which I am not yet ready to comment on. “This was stated in his daily press conference by the spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitri Peskov. He added that Moscow does not know at the moment “about what specifically does the American side want to talk about“In addition, he stressed that the Russian position is clear in favor of the unconditional extension of the New Start. “Until now, certain conditions had been presented...
Washington (CNN)A Senate stalled. That's how we start the day and end the week. The talks of bipartisanship are quickly getting ensnared by must-move Senate business, not the least of which is getting an agreement on how the Senate will be run over the next two years. It seems simple, but it's a big deal and it's proving far harder to secure than anyone had anticipated.Bottom line: The fight over the organizing resolution, which appeared to be a temporary disagreement on Wednesday, has reared its head as a full-out legislative crisis that could threaten to stall committee business, cast a shadow over talks about when to start the impeachment trial and constrain the first days of Chuck Schumer's role as majority leader. Put simply, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is making a play to exert as much power over the Senate in his new role as possible and Schumer is going to...
There’s a chilly week ahead for the D.C. region and the chance for some snow early next week, but the year so far has been off to a relatively warm start. Storm Team 4 meteorologist Chuck Bell said the region has experienced some mild winter weather so far, with Jan. 21 marking 25 straight days of higher-than-average weather. But all that is about to come to an end this weekend, and a chance for snow pops up early next week. That snow will likely take the form of the dreaded “wintry mix” on Monday, as temperatures will probably not remain below freezing for the entire day. The week ahead of that slushy mess will be cool and breezy at times. Temperatures on Friday will be in the mid- to upper 40s, but gusty conditions will bring wind chills into the 30s and 40s, according to Storm Team 4 meteorologist Amelia...
The Joe Biden government is proposing to Russia to extend the New START treaty that limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons of both countries for five years, a US official reported Thursday. | 01/21/2021 | ionicons-v5-c20: 18 | Agencies | The proposal was being transmitted to Russian officials, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity as it was a matter not yet officially announced by the government. Another official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the proposal, but did not elaborate. The Washington Post was the first to break the news. National security adviser Jake Sullivan planned to communicate the proposal to the Russian ambassador in U.S, Anatoly Antonov, in the next few hours, said the official. The move, a sign of Biden’s intention to pursue gun control, will almost certainly be welcomed by both Russia and Russia’s allies. U.S. NATO Secretary General Jens...

January 21, 2021 9:23 PM | With information from EFE 15 minutes. US President Joe Biden proposed to Russia to extend for five years the last disarmament treaty in force between the two nuclear powers, the New Start, which expires on February 5, the White House press spokesperson reported this Thursday, Jen Psaki. “I can confirm that the US will seek a five-year extension,” Psaki told a news conference at the White House. “The president made it clear for a long time that the New Start is in the national interest of the United States. And this extension makes even more sense when the relationship with Russia is antagonistic, as it is at the moment, “Psaki said. In this regard, the spokeswoman explained that, although Biden wants to work with the Kremlin to extend the treaty, Russia must also “hold accountable for its reckless and conflicting actions.” For this reason,...

Why European startups shouldn’t be scared of early US expansion. January 20, 2021 5 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. European start-ups and starlets may not have much in common but they do share one dream – to be successful in America. Prosperity and honor can of course be found elsewhere, but it’s the land of opportunity that promises to take a career or company to the next level. Working out how to make a transatlantic transition is what keeps founders and actors up at night, turning over plans and imagining what a US break would mean for their fortunes. To have made it in America is to be a success. Such is the mythology around the US that it conversely puts many off even trying to establish a foothold. The challenge feels too daunting, too impossible. In the world...
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton vows he's going to fight 'illegal and unconstitutional' actions by the Biden administration. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton vowed Wednesday that he would protect his state against illegal actions he's pretty sure the administration of President Joe Biden is going to take. "Congrats, President Biden," Paxton wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "On Inauguration Day, I wish our country the best. I promise my fellow Texans and Americans that I will fight against the many unconstitutional and illegal actions that the new administration will take, challenge federal overreach that infringes on Texans' rights, and serve as a major check against the administration's lawlessness. Texas First! Law & Order always!" Paxton, a Donald Trump loyalist, himself has a lengthy track record of alleged illegal behavior, and it's not the first time he's made false and baseless claims...

Defenseman Erik Karlsson said Wednesday he’s not overly concerned about the Sharks’ tepid start to the season or his own performance after the first three games. The Sharks, who have been trying to integrate some new players into their lineup and learn a new system under coach Bob Boughner after a 10-month layoff, have a 1-2-0 record going into Wednesday’s game with the St. Louis Blues. The Sharks have been their own worst enemy at times early this season in terms of puck management and their defensive structure. In Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Blues, Boughner felt the Sharks were unnecessarily feeding into the Blues’ offense with some questionable decisions with the puck. The Sharks have allowed 10 even strength goals in three games, including five on Monday, and have been outscored 7-1 in the second period so far. Karlsson, who has one assist in the...
The first rival of Fernando Alonso in 2021, like that of every pilot, he will be his teammate. Although in Alpine they are aware that the Asturian will start at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the grid after having been two years away from Formula 1, said handicap could be accentuated with respect to Esteban Ocon, who has raced this season at Renault and who is more suited to the car and its team of engineers. That is why Sergey sirotkin, who has been the reserve driver for the French team in 2020, expects a close fight between the two at the beginning. “I think that, at least in the initial stage, the fight between Alonso and Ocon will be very close. In addition, Esteban helped himself a lot by winning the podium: in Abu Dhabi you could tell that he seemed to have lowered a load from...
New York Rangers stonewalled by the Devil’s Blackwood in one goal loss By: Jim Bay January 20, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Rangers just got the memo that the New Jersey Devils might be for real this year, falling to their tri-state rival by the score of 4-3. Mackenzie Blackwood was outstanding in net for New Jersey in stopping 47 shots. The Devils scored three times in the second period, led by 2019 first overall pick Jack Hughes who had two goals and an assist. Once again, the Rangers got off to a slow start by allowing New Jersey to score within the first 32 seconds of the game, courtesy of a Travis Zajac goal. The play was set up when Miles Wood got a long pass from P.K. Subban and brought the puck up the right side while the Rangers were...

The Toronto Blue Jays have completed their rebuilding plan with the George Springer signing. In the summer of 2018, shortly after the Toronto Blue Jays dealt their former MVP Josh Donaldson for an obscure minor league pitcher, general manager Ross Atkins insisted it was all part of the plan. He’ll bat at the top of a Blue Jays lineup that can now claim to match up with anyone in 2021. Biggio, Bichette, Guerrero, Randal Grichuk (43 home runs over the last two seasons) and Teoscar Hernandez (16 home runs in 2020, fifth in the AL) will be behind him. Atkins and manager Charlie Montoyo will have to figure out how to squeeze all these weapons into their lineup on a daily basis; they’re now so deep that Lourdes Gurriel, with a .874 OPS since 2019, may be the odd man out. The roots of the Springer signing lie in what...

If the Philadelphia Eagles are serious about turning things around, they need to call Nick Sirianni from Indianapolis. Jeff Lurie and Howie Roseman will only have one question when interviewing candidates for the Philadelphia Eagles‘ job. Teams live or die by their quarterback’s play, and Philadelphia is stuck with Wentz for at least another season. If they want to get the best out of their quarterback, they need to start from the ground up. So sure, there are other names worthy of consideration, but how many have the patience to start over with Wentz? The Eagles need a coach willing to take a risk and fix the franchise in their image. A New York City court worker was arrested Tuesday after allegedly threatening to murder several Democratic politicians out of anger over the results of the presidential election. Brandon Hunt, a 37-year-old employee at the New York State Office of Court Administration, has been charged with making online threats against elected officials, including several Democratic leaders, in several social-media posts since December. After the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, Hunt, who goes by the nickname “X-Ray Ultra,” escalated his violent rhetoric, calling for another insurrection when all elected officials are back at the Capitol to “slaughter these motherfuckers.” Authorities raided his Queens home on Tuesday morning and he is in custody, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Daily Beast. The New York State court system also confirmed that Hunt, who was employed as an assistant court analyst in the attorney registration unit, has been suspended without pay. “Trump,...

As Kevin Dalton sat and watched the votes come in late at night on November 3, his face slowly turned into a wide grin. Joe Biden's election victory was as much a relief for his mostly-Democrat supporting family on America's east coast as for him. And while it spelt the end of Donald Trump's time in the White House, this 75-year-old might have just found himself a lucrative new job. London-based Kevin, once a successful New York businessman, is hoping to start out on his new career as an impersonator of the President-elect, three years his senior. The resemblance is striking, from the swept-back white hair to that charismatic toothy smile and even his signature aviators, he has obviously been perfecting the 'Biden look' in the mirror over the last year. Only in 2018 had he started putting himself forward as an actor and model, with his clean-cut look helping him...
Semyon Varlamov’s hot start a great thing for the Islanders By: Rob Taub January 19, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditFor the Islanders to have a third consecutive winning season, several things are going to have to fall in their favor. And in a compacted 56-game season such as this year, getting solid goaltending is right there at the very top. So far, that’s been what we’ve seen from Semyon Varlamov. The Isles’ number one goalie has gotten off to a fantastic start to the season albeit the small hiccup on Saturday night, where he was forced to miss the game against the Rangers after taking a shot off the mask in warmups. After yesterday’s 1-0 win over the Bruins, he’s now 2-0-0 to begin this year and hasn’t allowed a single goal in both of his starts. He’s also now the only goaltender in...

Novichok are able to penetrate the enemy’s body regardless of the protection measures in place at the time, they are safe to transport and store, and their effects lack treatment. Furthermore, they were not included in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)...

The director of the Center for Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), Fernando Simón, stated this Monday that the most effective way to control infections is close the bars, on top of advancing the curfew, since this measure can be skipped by citizens meeting at homes. “I am not a supporter of a curfew or a non-curfew: I am a supporter of that the measures to control the transmission of the disease are well applied. They can be a few very well applied or many a little worse applied, and in the end achieve the same effect, “said Simón at a press conference. The expert has recognized that “any measure to try to control transmission will have some effect”, but has opted to assess “similar alternatives.” For the epidemiologist, there are other options in advance of the start of the curfew, such as “closing the interiors of the bars“. “I know...

The 46th President of the United States has promised that he would return the country from the first day of his mandate to the Paris climate agreement, which Donald Trump had slammed the door on in 2017. He also pledged to cancel the same day the emblematic migration decree of Donald Trump, which prohibits the entry into American territory to nationals of several countries, with a Muslim majority, and considered by his opponents as an Islamophobic measure. He plans to repeal these two presidential decrees with a simple signature, his future chief of staff, Ron Klain, said on Saturday. He will add to these two measures a series of decrees supposed to give, during the first ten days of his mandate, the necessary impetus to his presidency. The decree, which is not subject to a vote by Congress, allows the new president to avoid any legislative delay due to...

Although those who change teams will also start at a disadvantage compared to those who do not, in the case of the Asturian this will be accentuated since he has been two years away from Formula 1. Luckily for Fernando Alonso the World Championship will start in Bahrain, a circuit in which he has won three times. For those who love statistics, Formula 1 started in Bahrain in 2006 and 2010, years in which the Spaniard took the victory. Fernando Alonso knows the Sakhir track perfectly, which is where he has won the most victories in his career, although he has also won three times in Malaysia and in Hockenheim. On the other hand, the Asturian, has carried out tests with Renault in Bahrain; which is...
The Cleveland Browns gifting the Kansas City Chiefs the ball to start Sunday’s game was absolutely senseless.  What in the world was Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski thinking on Sunday going up against the Kansas City Chiefs? In a Divisional Round showdown at Arrowhead Stadium, the Browns won the toss and had a chance to punch the Chiefs right in the mouth with a great opening drive. Instead, Stefanski and the Browns decided to defer instead. So, instead of landing some early blows, Cleveland kicked the ball off to one of the most explosive offenses in the game. January 17, 2021 5 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Not long after getting her driver’s license, my daughter was driving her car in town. She was on her way home from school when the serpentine belt broke. Although the car continued to run, there was no power steering. If you have ever tried to steer a car with power steering when the power steering is not functioning, you know how difficult it is. She was retelling this story the other night and was recalling how she was unable to turn the wheel (and she is pretty strong). I know it can be difficult, but she should still be able to drive / steer even without power steering. Finally, it dawned on me, and I asked her, “Were you moving?” She was not. She was trying to turn the stationary wheels by...
‘Q’, a mysterious messenger who converted millions of Americans to his conspiracy theory and galvanized Donald Trump followers who stormed Congress, is played by two people, say start-up experts Swiss. WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS/AP) — Getting 100 million shots into Americans’ arms in his first 100 days is only the beginning of his coronavirus plan, President-elect Joe Biden declared Friday. Lasting impact, he said, will come from uniting the nation in a new effort grounded in science and fueled by billions in federal money for vaccination, testing and outbreak sleuths. “You have my word: We will manage the hell out of this operation,” Biden said. But he also underscored a need for Congress to approve more money and for people to keep following basic precautions, such as wearing masks, avoiding gatherings and frequently washing their hands. “This is not a political issue,” Biden said. “This is about saving lives. I know it’s become a partisan issue, but what a stupid, stupid thing to happen.” Biden spoke a day after unveiling a $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan” to confront the virus and...

These were not just the Trump loyalists of lore, that economically marginalized, over-elegized white working class of the heartland. No, the crowd that stormed the Capitol was a big tent of whiteness, a cross-section of American society bridging divisions of class, geography and demography. They were doctors and lawyers, florists and real estate agents, business executives, police officers, military veterans, at least one elected official and an Olympic gold medalist. They’d all come to coup for America. What had drawn together this motley mob, other than race and party? A preposterous lie incubated in a digital-media fantasyland. Just as tech CEOs had once boldly envisioned, disparate strangers from across the land really had come together online to forge common purpose out of shared philosophy. That the philosophy was conspiratorial lunacy and the common purpose insurrection — well, nobody’s perfect, I suppose. It isn’t just the crowd’s variety that was striking....

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It’s been a bloody beginning to 2021 in South Florida with around three dozen people shot in just 13 days in Miami-Dade and Broward.  In many cases multiple victims were caught in a hail of gunfire. People at the Cordoba Court apartments in Opa-locka say they know about violence. “It’s the devil’s dungeon here,” said Sholanda Rivers with the Tenant Association. Neighbors describe hearing gunfire around them. Two people were shot and killed there since Friday. “There’s been an uptick in violence and most of it we know what’s going on, it’s poverty.  It’s economics,” said Daniella Pierre, president of the Miami-Dade branch of the NAACP. “They have failed to address the economic wellbeing of the black community.” They’re calling for change and solutions. “Violence is a choice one that we do not condone it. And while many people are setting resolutions to get rid of the “pandemic pounds” or continuing their home renovation projects, another top area to be setting goals is in your career. 2020 has seen massive shifts in the workforce, the displacement of thousands of employees, and a push for industries to pivot harder and faster than in recent memory. But while this past year may have felt bleak, your future doesn’t have to. If you...
This was a performance that wasn’t worth even a 24-hour wait, let alone the 313 days between appearances at the Garden by the Rangers. But then, this wouldn’t even count as an appearance by the Blueshirts — who pulled a no-show in the season opener, losing 4-0 to an Islanders team that essentially had a 60-minute stroll through the park on Thursday. If you’re looking for an excuse for this debacle — in which Igor Shesterkin allowed goals on the third, fifth and seventh shots he faced while his teammates lollygagged — don’t bother. There are no excuses for the Rangers, spared the indignity of being booed out of the building only because customers are not permitted at the Garden. This was an amateurish performance by a team that was not prepared to compete against the conference finalists. Check that. The Rangers were not prepared to compete, period. If you...

First is a structural change. Blizzard says the 20-team league will be split into two divisions — one made of teams from China and Korea, the other North America and Europe — and they’ll play against other teams in their region during the regular season. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s impeachment and the fallout from the Jan. 6 attack of the Capitol by pro-Trump loyalists (all times local): 9:55 a.m. President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial could begin at 1 p.m. on Inauguration Day next Wednesday as President-elect Joe Biden is being sworn into office. Trump is the only president ever to be impeached twice. Pelosi, D-Calif., hasn’t said when she’ll send the impeachment charge to the Senate. Some Democrats have suggested holding back to allow Biden time to be inaugurated and to...

He even made a nice opening for an offside Mbappé (29th). 3/13 Diallo (5) Serene against Thauvin at the start of the match, then solid in the second half as a left side, but passive on the goal of Payet (89th). 4/13 Florenzi (5) Dangerous a few times by his centers and not much else to report for his return to the starting lineup. 5/13 Kurzawa (4) A particularly poor performance from the left side, with many technical inaccuracies and a fault on Payet which could have been expensive (41st). Against VEF Riga, Strasbourg needed two extra time to win and make sure to participate in the Champions League play-offs. In a match where mastery was not there, Strasbourg was able to accelerate at the right time to snatch victory after a second extra time. Against VEF Riga, SIG first suffered the game and conceded a 12-0 which gave the Latvian club a ten-point lead at the very end of the first quarter. But the reaction of the Alsatians came in the middle of the second quarter. Thanks to a 13-2, Lassi Tuovi’s players were able to get past a few seconds before concluding the first half of the match with only two points behind. But, ironed in front just after returning to the floor, Bonzie Colson’s teammates (31 points, 7 rebounds) suffered a new outburst and were up to seven points behind. But, combative, the SIG players...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The St. Paul City Council passed a resolution Wednesday to create a commission looking into reparations to African Americans for slavery. The capitol city joins other organizations calling for change from the disparities created by historical inequities between Whites and Blacks. It starts with an apology for historic wrongs, like the enslavement of people at Fort Snelling — including Dred Scott. His fight for freedom set up a United States Supreme Court case that was the backdrop for the Civil War. Another historic wrong was the destruction of the Rondo neighborhood in the 1950s in order to build Interstate 94. The council voted to start official talks about reparations. “One of the first things we’re doing by way of this resolution is apologizing for American slavery, and the way in which our state and city have benefited from it,” said City Councilmember Jane Prince. D.C. boosts efforts to distribute coronavirus vaccine as demand outpaces supply across region The truth is out there … perhaps: CIA releases thousands of UFO files Should the 76ers or Nets trade for James Harden? A debate After James Harden ripped the Houston Rockets publicly after a loss on Tuesday night and the franchise sent Harden home instead of having him practice, it’s all become clear that a trade is probably imminent. © Provided by For The Win According to a report from The Athletic, that’s true. Shams Charania and Sam Amick report two teams — the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets — are “finalists” for the services of the eight-time All-Star. There are some reports on what each side could be offering, which we’ll get to. But which team should acquire Harden? We had a little debate about it at For The Win between Mike Sykes and Charles Curtis,...

“About those who had a rather successful year” was the title of an opinion piece published in the New York Times, last December, dedicated to Americans who have not been impacted or even enriched themselves since the start of the health crisis. Enough to feed the reflection on the impact of Covid-19 on the American economy. What are its effects so far and have they really proven to be painless for a whole part of the population? It should first be remembered that with each new crisis, economists relearn their alphabet by debating the form that a possible recovery could take. The health crisis in the United States has not escaped the rule. As always, the most optimistic dreamed (and still dream) of a recovery in “V”, with a rebound as fast as the recession. Others feared that possible repeat lockdowns would result in a ‘W’ recovery, with economic prospects...

Editorial: Gaming / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / Instagram / News / Discord / Forums The story of the first The Last of Us is one of the most emotional in the history of videogames and since Naughty Dog decided to rely on a deeper narrative, it would only be a matter of taking a step so that what Ellie and Joel experienced could be considered from the perspective of another medium. Today, we know that HBO is preparing a series inspired by the franchise and that Sony has such plans for some of its IPs and it is all part of a large-scale plan, as Jim Ryan pointed out. PlayStation has big plans to exploit your IPs in other media During his participation at CES 2021, Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, took a moment to discuss the division’s plans for the IPs that are...
Liars begin to mimic the actions of their interviewers questioning them about the whoppers they've been spinning, a new study has revealed. Dutch researchers from Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam used motion capture to monitor the behaviour of liars as they told increasingly bigger lies to someone else.  We can imitate the behaviour of others unconsciously, and we become more likely to automatically mimic them if the brain is working hard, the researchers explained.  Because it's harder for the brain to be dishonest than to tell the truth, we tend to mimic our victims when we're being deceitful, they added. Dutch researchers from Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam used motion capture to monitor the behaviour of liars as they told increasingly bigger lies to someone else As part of the study, which included researchers from the UK and the Netherlands, volunteers were monitored as they told the truth and as they told progressive...

As you can see by my signature, Dan, I’m a linguist. On your podcast you frequently ask researchers “whatchyougot” on all kinds of sex-and-romance-related questions, I thought maybe you’d be interested in some expertise on linguistic matters too. And I have some on “cum,” “cumming,” and (shudder) “cummed.” The technical term here used among linguists for this kind of phenomenon is “peeve.” Let me clarify, it’s not the “cum,” “cumming,” and “cummed” that’s a peeve but the shuddering. You see, the snide sound there is due to the fact that what causes peevers to shudder causes linguists to get interested. The point is language always changes, and linguists are interested in these changes however much they horrify normal people. (That’s our technical term for non-linguists.) Grandparents are forever lamenting about how their grandchildren’s generation is ruining the language. Documentation of this phenomenon goes back to the Roman times. And...

In Sunday night’s Lakers’ victory over the Houston Rockets, coach Frank Vogel rolled out a seldom-used lineup, surrounding LeBron James and Anthony Davis with Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Talen Horton-Tucker. It’s not a particularly noteworthy lineup from a strategic standpoint and they didn’t do much to stand out in the game — a two-minute stint in which they scored 10 points and gave up four to the Rockets.
