NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen informed LSU on Tuesday that he will not take the Tigers’ defensive coordinator job after initially agreeing in principle to do to so, two people familiar with the situation said. The people spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition on anonymity because negotiations have not been made public by LSU or the Saints. A person told the AP on Monday that Nielsen had agreed in principle to take the LSU position, but that some outstanding contract issues still needed to be resolved. Another person told the AP on Tuesday that the Saints have promoted Nielsen to assistant head coach. LSU will continue its search for its third defensive coordinator in three seasons. Dave Aranda left after LSU’s 2019 national championship season to become Baylor’s head coach. His replacement, Bo Pelini, left after a difficult 2020 season,...

VIDEO3:0903:09The state of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout in the United StatesWorldwide Exchange In his first days in office, President-elect Joe Biden plans to sign an executive order to reopen schools. However, it's not just a matter of federal funding. Vaccinating teachers remains one of the biggest hurdles to returning kids to classrooms. As Covid-19 cases spike across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have prioritized teachers and school staff as "essential workers," making them next in line to get the vaccine. However, "it depends on how many teachers will get vaccinated and by when," said Tricia Neuman, senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation — and that is still a matter of availability and access in each state.  More from Personal Finance: In-person learning is a luxury months into the pandemicMore colleges plan to reopen for the spring semesterStimulus relief could include a break for school expenses As...
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Everyone over age 65 in Wisconsin will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting on Monday, a group of 700,000 people that is more expansive than originally envisioned to be next in line for the shot, the state Department of Health Services said Tuesday. The department also cautioned that the speed of vaccinations depends on how much vaccine the state receives from the federal government. Wisconsin receives about 70,000 doses of first-dose vaccine each week; at that pace, it could take months to vaccinate the new group. “Wisconsin systems and operations are ready to vaccinate more people,” said Andrea Palm, the secretary of the state Department of Health Services, who is leaving her post on Wednesday. ”The amount of vaccine we get from the federal government will determine how quickly we can get these groups vaccinated.” People over age 65 will be able to get vaccinated...
When Enbridge Energy began construction on its Line 3 crude oil pipeline in northern Minnesota last month, opponents of the project said the influx of workers could spike COVID-19 rates in rural areas and strain the health care system. Some asked Gov. Tim Walz to pause construction as the pandemic raged and while legal challenges to Line 3 were still unresolved. Walz and state regulators declined to halt the $2.6 billion project, and more than a month later, Enbridge says its COVID-19 protocols are working as planned. So far, there have been a modest number of cases among the thousands of workers on the pipeline, though the full scope of Enbridge’s impact on disease spread isn’t clear. Construction underway  After years of environmental review and permitting, Enbridge started to build Line 3 on Dec. 1. The 36-inch pipeline is intended to replace a smaller 34-inch pipeline that was built in...
SLATINGTON, Pa. (CBS) – A 29-year-old Lehigh County man has been charged for his role in the Capitol chaos. Craig Michael Bingert, of Slatington, turned himself in on Monday. Authorities say Bingert worked with other protesters to break through a police line. Officials say still images from a Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia body camera show Bingert and the crowd pushing a barricade into MPD officers in an apparent attempt to gain access to the Capitol grounds and building. In the video, Bingert is seen carrying an American flag. According to court records, the group that included Bingert was shoving the barrier into the police officers, then they proceeded to lift the barrier in an attempt to break through the police line. The police then take a defensive posture and began spraying chemical irritants. Authorities say at one point, Bingert who stayed in the area turns around...

New York Giants should see further offensive line improvements in 2021 By: Anthony Rivardo January 18, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Giants‘ offensive line was inconsistent in 2020. The Giants have had struggles across their offensive line for years now. It is a problem the Giants seemingly cannot fix. However, they are slowly working towards improving the offensive line, investing plenty of assets into the unit over the past two years. The Giants traded for Kevin Zeitler in 2019 and signed Nate Solder to a huge contract in the 2018 free agency period. These are the two moves New York has made to acquire veteran talent on the offensive line. In 2020, though, the Giants shifted towards a more youthful approach on the offensive line. New York spent the fourth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on left tackle Andrew Thomas....
Steve Martin received the coronavirus vaccine over the weekend in New York City. The comedian-actor, 75, detailed the experience on Twitter and called it "smooth as silk." "Good news/Bad news. Good news: I just got vaccinated! Bad news: I got it because I’m 75. Ha!" Martin wrote.  "The operation in NYC was smooth as silk (sorry about the cliché @BCDreyer!) and hosted to perfection by the US Army and National Guard. Thank you all, and thank you science," he described. CORONAVIRUS VACCINE DISTRIBUTION PLANS: STATE-BY-STATE BREAKDOWN When a fan asked Martin how he signed up for it, the "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" star said he signed up online.  "I signed up ON line through an NYC dot gov website (sorry I don’t have the exact site), and waited IN line at the Javits Center," he recalled and joked he's having no "fide resects." PHIL Spector's former wife has broken her silence on the killer record producer's death - branding him "a lousy husband". Ronnie Spector broke her silence on the convicted murderer, 81, who died Saturday while serving a life sentence for murdering actress Lana Clarkson in 2003.
Valerie Bertinelli posted a video sequence of some hilarious on-set bloopers from her former Hot in Cleveland co-star Betty White in an Instagram post to honor the television legend’s 99th birthday. The nine-minute long montage of clips featured Valerie, Betty, and their co-stars Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves as they attempted to get through some of their scenes for the series, which ran on TV Land for six seasons, from 2010 through 2015. All of these included Betty as she tried to get through some of the more racy lines written for her on the series as she portrayed the character of Elka Ostrovsky, an elderly seasoned caretaker of a rental house who is wise beyond her years and judgmental toward the younger generation. The premise of the comedy was the story of three friends from Los Angeles who found themselves in Ohio after their plane to Paris makes an...

Spector, whose net worth is estimated to be around $50million, was diagnosed with COVID four weeks ago and was transferred from his prison cell at California Health Care Facility in Stockton to hospital. The music producer had been serving a 19 years-to-life sentence for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003. After a stint in hospital, it appeared he had recovered enough to be returned to his cell, only for his condition to worsen, causing breathing difficulties. RYE, N.H. (AP) – Board members at a Rye nursing home “cut in line” for a COVID-19 vaccine, according to New Hampshire health officials. Thomas Argue, CEO at Webster at Rye, said it was his decision to invite board members to participate at the end of the clinic “so every employee could receive their vaccine first.” The board has a fiduciary responsibility to oversee the facility, he said. The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services criticized the decision. “The department condemns the facility’s decision to allow its board members to ‘cut in line’ to get the vaccine by prioritizing board members alongside their direct caregivers,” Jake Leon, spokesperson for the state health department, in a statement to New Hampshire Public Radio. The state health department hasn’t said whether the state will take any actions against the facility. (© Copyright 2021 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. This material may...

Federal guidelines recommend that smokers under the age of 65, considered high-risk for severe Covid-19 symptoms, be eligible for the vaccine in early phases of distribution, frustrating essential workers lower in the priority line. New Jersey and Mississippi are currently offering the vaccine to smokers under the age of 65, and several other states have included smokers among those next in line, but haven’t opened the phase yet, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis. The move to prioritize smokers over essential workers like teachers has received some criticism, though the phased rollout is in line with federal guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control that place smoking on a list of conditions “that cause increased risk of severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19.” The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices advises smokers to be vaccinated in phase 1c but ultimately states can use their discretion in how...

WandaVision, the first original television series produced by Marvel Studios, isn’t quite like anything Marvel has released before. It’s absurdist and pays authentic tribute to some of the best American sitcoms produced in the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, including Bewitched and The Dick Van Dyke Show. WandaVision is still a Marvel Studios show, however, and that means it ties into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first two episodes, now streaming on Disney Plus, set up a key organization that ties WandaVision into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe’s moment, while also setting up the enticing “cosmic universe” era it’s about to enter. NBA legend Charles Barkley is arguing that the league’s current players and coaches should move to the front of the vaccine line because they pay higher taxes. Speaking on TNT’s Inside the NBA early Friday, Barkley advocated for the entire league to be vaccinated ahead of the general population. “I think they should let the NBA players and coaches all get the vaccine,” Barkley said. “That’s just my personal opinion.” Barkley included athletes from other major sports as well — arguing that the higher taxes paid by those in professional sports ought to secure them a place at the head of the line. “NFL players, hockey players, as much taxes as these players pay — let me repeat that — as much taxes as these players pay, they deserve some preferential treatment,” Barkley said. “For life and death?” Colleague Kenny Smith asked Barkley. “Yes,” Barkley replied. MODESTO (CBS13) — The state’s last-minute announcement yesterday to open up vaccination to those 65 and older spread quickly across the region. At a public vaccination site in Stanislaus County on Thursday, the change prompted such a response that authorities had to shut it down almost as soon as it opened. As the clinic’s doors opened, there were cheers from those who have lived in fear. “I don’t care how long I have to stay in line,” said Roman Moniz. Moniz has stayed inside her house for a year due to issues. During that time, two grandchildren were born. For her the vaccine means freedom. “Total freedom to get out and see my family in a way I want to. I haven’t held any of the babies. I’ve seen them on Skype,” she said. Despite suggestions to broaden some of the criteria of who qualifies as a frontline healthcare worker, many did not expect young, healthy people would be given the inoculations over those at higher risk.  But it's not just elite hospitals; public health experts say it's likely hundreds of private and public institutions across the U.S. Hundreds of medical centers across the U.S. have been giving non-frontline healthcare workers, such as administrators and non-graduates their first...

HILL CITY, Minn. (AP) — Eight people were arrested in a protest to oppose construction of the Enbridge Energy Line 3 oil pipeline replacement in northern Minnesota, authorities said. More than 150 people gathered in Aitken County on Saturday to protest the project, the Northern Lights Task Force said in a news release. They blocked a road in one area, then traveled on buses and cars to another area south of Hill City, where authorities say they interfered with construction workers. Many people dispersed after authorities gave warnings. But after ignoring orders to leave, seven people were booked into jail for trespassing on critical infrastructure, and one person was cited and released for failing to leave an unlawful assembly, authorities said. CHICAGO (CBS) — The Bears have had two playoff appearances in the last three years, but they have also been filled with boatloads of disappointment. On Sunday, they lost the NFC wild card game to the New Orleans Saints 21-9, and their season is over. So now, it remains to be seen who will be left to clean up the mess this offseason. As CBS 2’s Luke Stuckmeyer reported, jobs are certainly on the line at Halas Hall – general manager, head coach, and quarterback, to name a few. Head Coach Matt Nagy has never had a losing regular season. But Lovie Smith was fired by the Bears after winning 10 games in his final season – so we’ll see there. MARIN COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- North Bay teachers and school employees are getting ready to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations as soon as next week. IRVINE (CBSLA) — Cars snaked through Irvine for nearly two miles Friday as healthcare workers and those at highest risk of COVID-19 exposure lined up for their chance to be vaccinated. (CBSLA) “We’ve been waiting for four hours now, and I’m still not even, I’m not even in line,” Gabriella Ciulla, a physician’s assistant, said. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, a player who survived getting shot in the face last summer, enjoys a tough opponent. Purposely crashing into college football’s best offensive line during Monday night’s national championship game won’t be as harrowing as a bullet passing through both of his cheeks, which is what happened when he tried to break up a fight on a street in August. But he knows there will be violence. “It’ll be won in the trenches, no doubt,” said Garrett, a 6-foot-2, 299-pound senior captain. Alabama’s offensive line this week won the Joe Moore Award as the best in the nation, paving the way for an offense averaging 535 yards and 48.2 points a game. The Tide (12-0) has allowed 17 sacks while averaging 5.1 yards per rush. The Tide defense will run into an Ohio State offensive front that has recently...

Maryland’s Frederick and Howard counties have ramped up coronavirus vaccine distribution as more shipments become available locally. Howard County has received 4,500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine so far and has given out more than 2,600 of those, according to County Executive Calvin Ball. He said that, by Tuesday, 100% of the county’s doses will be administered. “We still have a long way to go. Vaccine distribution to all of our residents is a complex undertaking with very high stakes,” Ball said. Maryland is currently in Phase 1A, which includes front-line health care workers and first responders. Howard County said that this phase is expected to be completed by the end of January. Frederick County received 4,700 doses. Of those, 18% have been given so far, but 100% is expected to be given by the end of next week. “We are facing our last big fight against the virus. We...
Twitter has removed a tweet from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in line with the platform’s latest policy against misinformation surrounding COVID-19 vaccines, after he claimed the United States’ and other western nations’ coronavirus vaccines are "completely untrustworthy." PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The turmoil this week is just the latest assault on our senses and our children are seeing it too. California is changing its COVID-19 defense strategy to offer the vaccine earlier to a broader segment of the elder population, protecting the most medically vulnerable populations. Elaborating on guidelines outlined by Gov. Gavin Newsom earlier this week, on Tuesday during California’s community vaccine advisory committee meeting, Dr. Robert Schechter unveiled criteria that elevate people in two groups: ages 50 and 64, and 65 to 74 years old. The timing of this next step has not yet been announced, and the state’s coronavirus vaccination program for first priority workers and residents is lagging so far. “Very soon, as the supply increases over the next weeks, be expecting a formal announcement of when (the next phase)is in effect,” said Schechter, chief of the Immunizations Branch of the California Department of Public Health and co-chair of the state’s drafting guidelines workgroup. First President Trump denied reality. Then he fanned the flames of insurrection. And on Wednesday, his speech actually broke the law, and he should be prosecuted for it. Trump didn’t ask people to read between the lines on Wednesday, he was explicit: “[Y]ou’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong…We’re going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue, … and we’re going to the Capitol, … and we’re going to try [to] give our Republicans…the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.” Speaking to a crowd about political views lies at the very heart of our democracy. But weaponizing that crowd, inciting them, directing them, and turning them into a weapon, that’s not democracy — that’s an attack on the democratic process. And when a person, even a president, crosses that line, the Constitution and...
Sen. Bernie Sanders The Rev. Raphael Warnock has defeated Sen. SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — Frontline health care workers and nursing homes are first in line to get a COVID-19 vaccine in California, but dental workers who face unmasked patients at work daily, have to wait. Mary Hoffman is a dedicated dental hygienist in Menlo Park. Roughly 8 times a day, she puts herself at risk by peering into the mouths and assessing the oral health of unmasked patients. “It’s unnerving at times. Even though we’re taking precautions and taking temperatures and asking questions, people are asymptomatic, and you have no idea if they are contagious or have the virus which is very scary,” recounted Hoffman. A COVID-19 vaccine would make all the difference. “We’re highly exposed with every patient from the time we walk...

Ohio State and Alabama meet in the College Football Playoff championship game Monday. But what if they played on Sundays instead?  The Tide and Buckeyes combined to put more than 100 players on NFL rosters in Week 1 of the 2020 college football season. There isn’t just enough talent to put together two teams — they would be good teams. President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on Republican senators to join their colleagues in the effort to overturn Joe Biden's election victory. And he's doing it publicly and bluntly.  Trump targeted Senator Mike Lee on Monday night, announcing he's 'angry' at the Utah Republican at a campaign rally in Georgia for the two Senate candidates in that state. 'Mike Lee is here, but I'm a little angry at him,' Trump said at the event. His comments came after Lee announced he didn't support objecting to the election results when Congress meets on Wednesday to certify them. Lee's Republican colleagues, Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, are leading the objection charge in the upper chamber. (CNN)Rep. Jamie Raskin and his wife, Sarah, published an emotional tribute to their late son, Tommy, who died by suicide at 25 years old last week, describing him as "a radiant light in this broken world.""Tommy Raskin had a perfect heart, a perfect soul, a riotously outrageous and relentless sense of humor, and a dazzling radiant mind," the pair wrote. The Maryland Democrat had announced his son's death on New Year's Eve and said in a statement this weekend that he was launching a memorial fund in Tommy Raskin's name that will benefit the charities he championed, including the Helen Keller Institute and Animal Outlook. In their essay Monday, the Raskins detailed Tommy Raskin's lifelong penchant for helping others, describing him as a "daring outspoken defender of all outcasts and kids in trouble" who "always made time for the loneliest kids in class" at every stage of life. During his high...
Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden are both holding rallies in Georgia on the eve of the state’s two Senate runoff elections, with control of the Senate on the line. Trump will doubtless tout his rally’s larger attendance, ignoring that it’s a result of ignoring public health precautions and packing people in to yet another potential superspreader event as coronavirus hammers the nation. But Trump has Republicans very nervous ahead of the rally given his attacks on top Georgia Republicans, including Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and his interest in telling voters that Georgia’s elections are rigged, potentially suppressing his own party's turnout. After all, if Republican Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler win on Tuesday, then Trump is the only Republican to lose at the top of the ticket in the state in 2020 and early 2021. Trump’s attacks on Kemp have taken...

Thousands of minority-owned small businesses were at the end of the line in the government's coronavirus relief program as many minority owners struggled more than White owners did to find banks that would accept their applications or were disadvantaged by the terms of the program, according to an Associated Press analysis of the low-interest government loans. Data from the Paycheck Protection Program released December 1 and analyzed by the Associated Press show that many minority owners desperate for a relief loan didn't receive one until the PPP's last few weeks while many more white business owners were able to get loans earlier in the program . OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER could start Mason Greenwood for Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Manchester City. Manchester United host their rivals in a one-legged shoot-out for a place in the Wembley final. 3 Since the two teams played out a Premier League stalemate in December, the Red Devils have been on a fine run. Five wins in six have elevated United to second in the league with some promoting Solskjaer's side to the rare status of 'favourites' for this derby meeting. Going into the game, the Norwegian has no major injury concerns to contend with, aside from the long-term absences of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
