As the Nets were closing in on the deal for James Harden, general manager Sean Marks wanted to know if his two superstars really wanted to share the stage — not to mention the ball — with a third. Marks said Thursday that both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving told him what he needed to hear, so he pulled the trigger on the blockbuster deal that landed the NBA's three-time scoring champion in Brooklyn. "They understand what’s at stake here," Marks said. "Everybody’s raised their hands and said, ‘Look, we’re in. We know what we’re shooting for’ and that includes James, the new player. He knows what’s at stake." This article is republished from The Conversation. Drugmakers are facing challenges in manufacturing vaccines and building supply chains to meet the demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Pfizer has even lowered production targets. Scarcity of vaccines has prompted calls for a Band-Aid-like strategy to stretch the precarious supply. To protect as many people as possible from COVID-19, the U.K.’s medical officers have chosen to prioritize distribution of a first vaccine dose to as many people as possible – by delaying the second doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine up to 12 weeks from the recommended 3-4. President-elect Biden wants to release all vaccine doses to speed up the vaccination program – but the risk is that vaccine makers won’t be able to replenish...
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – As we’ve been reporting, the administering of the COVID vaccine is picking up speed as more people in our area are now eligible to get it. With the accelerated rollout come many questions. CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez has the answers. Our first question is from Susan, who asks: “What if you had COVID and didn’t know it and now you have antibodies? Should I still get the vaccine and is it safe?“ If you had a mild or asymptomatic COVID case, then you will likely have developed antibodies to the coronavirus. That should protect you for a while, experts say. Don’t count on more than 90 days, though. So you don’t need a shot right away, but you still need one. Editorial: Gaming / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / Instagram / News / Discord / Forums CES 2021 is taking place and there are a lot of great products being shown. The most exciting are prototypes or product concepts that may never go on sale. One that caught our attention is a new Razer gaming chair that includes a drop-down screen. At CES 2021, Razer announced Project Brooklyn, a product it describes as its vision for next-generation gaming chairs. It is an avant-garde chair built with carbon fiber and RGB lighting. In case you missed it: What is a Sneakerhead and why could Reebok x Tom & Jerry make one for you? While aesthetics are important, the reality is that Project Brooklyn wants to be more than just a cool chair. The thing is, it wants to take immersion to another level by having a 60 ”drop-down screen, tactile feedback...
The video game industry has had quite busy days even though we are still in the early days of the year. Today, quite unexpectedly, it was announced that Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games join forces to create an open-world Star Wars game. The news is a real surprise because no information was ever leaked about it. However, the announcement has also raised doubts about the current relationship between EA and Disney. What will happen to the Star Wars titles developed by Electronic Arts? The US distributor itself confirmed through Twitter that they continue to work on games from the hit universe. However, and although they do not mention it, it is clear that your exclusivity contract with Disney has been canceled or will not be renewed. This agreement began in 2013 and expires in 2023. Seeing the friendly treatment that still exists between both companies, it is more likely that they...
WWE without Brock Lesnar is a weird place. The sight of the Beast Incarnate without a WWE Championship on his massive shoulders is very unusual. WWE would often bring Lesnar back for WrestleMania and put the belt on him so he could elevate another superstar. Will the ‘Beast’ make his return to WWE at the 2021 Royal Rumble, and if he does, what are the chances of him winning it? What are the odds of Brock Lesnar returning? To all Lesnar fans out there, the odds of Brock Lesnar returning at the Royal Rumble are quite high. He would make a much better winner than the likes of AJ Styles, John Cena, Braun Strowman, or even The Rock. Pushing the Beast always leads to better ratings, so seeing Brock as the winner won’t be surprising at all. If Lesnar were to return at the Rumble, the #30 spot seems like...

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Tuesday that he will introduce a measure that would make a song known as the “Black national anthem” the official national hymn of the United States. Clyburn said he wants to make the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing” the national hymn for the U.S. because he believes everyone can identify with the song and that it would help heal the country, in an interview with USA Today published Tuesday. “To make it a national hymn, I think, would be an act of bringing the country together. It would say to people, ‘You aren’t singing a separate national anthem, you are singing the country’s national hymn,’” Clyburn said, The Hill reported. “The gesture itself would be an act of healing. Everybody can identify with that song.” House Majority Whip Rep. Jim Clyburn speaks to rally goers during a drive-in rally for Democratic Senate candidate...
Earlier today Samsung detailed its Exynos 2100 mobile chipset. It’s the high-end silicon that will almost certainly power the company’s upcoming Galaxy S21 flagship in international markets. One of the highlights of the chip is its ARM-designed Mali-G78, which Samsung said will deliver 40 percent better graphical performance than its predecessor in the Exynos 990. At that same event, Samsung also provided an update on the GPU it’s been working with AMD on since 2019. Samsung said that component will make its way into its next “flagship product.” That’s not the Exynos 2100 or the Galaxy S21, which the company is expected to announce on Thursday at its first Unpacked event of 2021. Based on the wording Samsung’s Dr Inyup Kang used, the GPU is likely to make its first appearance in the chip that succeeds the Exynos 2100. When we’ll see that chipset announced, Samsung didn’t say. London (CNN Business)Just now, silence may not be that comforting. For years there has been a din on social media -- from President Trump on Twitter (TWTR), from right wing extremists amplifying his varying brands of crazy, from smaller sites hatching their own parallel universe. But now Trump is off Twitter, and Parler seems shut down for the foreseeable future, there is a discombobulating quiet that gives rise to some uncomfortable questions: What next? Does the lack of oxygen mean these ideas -- and the personalities that espouse them -- simply wither? Do they move wholesale to a new and less-moderated platform? Or do they move to a yet smaller, more radical circle, where their ideas become more extreme? There is a lot we do not know, but the broad consensus from experts and law enforcement in this field is that less space for extremists online is a good thing. Yet there...

Five people are dead, an unknown number were assaulted, hundreds if not thousands spent hours hiding in terror, Congress was delayed in its duty to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, and the U.S. Capitol was badly vandalized. But can we talk about how this is going to effect the careers of the loyal White House staff who have served the instigator of the terrorist attack? Some of these charmers talked to Politico’s Daniel Lippman, and it is as nauseating a parade of self-pity and self-justification as you could imagine.  You have the “lower-level Trump administration official” who whined, “The people who this is hardest on, aside from obviously the people in the Capitol and the police and the people who were hurt, are the people who have staked their reputations and their political, financial and career fortunes on defending the president and he’s just made it harder on us.” But this...
Will the Trouba-DeAngelo pairing work for the New York Rangers? By: Jim Bay January 9, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditEven by his own admission, New York Ranger defenseman Jacob Trouba did not have the season as he wanted in 2019-20. This came on the heels of his seven-year, $56 million contract extension that has already been considered as the worst contract in the league category just after one year. This season, Trouba is hoping to change this and the Rangers have provided him with a new D-line pairing in Tony DeAngelo. This will be Trouba’s fourth different regular partner after Brady Skjei, Libor Hajek, and Brendan Smith all took turns playing on his left side last season. This also means that D’Angelo will be playing on his off-side, something he says will not impact his play. It’s more responsibility, more ice time obviously, and...
House Democrats met by conference call Friday, the outcome of which is articles of impeachment against Donald Trump will be ready to be introduced on Monday. A source told Reuters the articles drafted by Representatives David Cicilline, Ted Lieu, and Jamie Raskin will be introduced in Monday's pro forma session. There will likely be an objection from Republicans, so they probably will have to bring the whole House back to bring the resolution formally Tuesday or Wednesday. A draft of the measure charges Trump with "inciting violence against the government of the United States" in his effort to overturn the results seating President-elect Joe Biden. The articles also cite Trump's efforts to get Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" the votes to give the state to him. Wednesday, Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson delivered a monologue about the riots seen at the U.S. Capitol that left four dead and many more injured. After emphasizing how “horrified” he was by the violence, Carlson said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that as long as the people feel that “their democracy is fraudulent” and are silenced while speaking out about it, the people will act out as seen on Wednesday and in history. He warned that the chaos at the Capitol could be used by the nation’s leaders to strip Americans of their basic rights. Partial transcript as follows: As long as people sincerely believe they can change things by voting, they stay calm. They don’t storm the bastille. They don’t burst into the House chamber. They talk and they organize and they vote. But the opposite is also true. If people begin to believe that their democracy is fraudulent, if they...
Mika Zibanejad missed his third consecutive day of camp, but David Quinn does not seem to believe that No. 93 is in jeopardy of missing the Jan. 14 season opener against the Islanders. “All indications are that he should be ready for opening night,” the coach said. “We’re expecting him back soon. I’d be a lot more worried if we were three or four days away and weren’t seeing him.” The team is conducting a 7 p.m. scrimmage on Thursday. Madden NFL 21’s next big Franchise mode update will fix an area that players have long complained about: AI-controlled teams drafting first-round quarterbacks when the club already has talent, even rookie talent, at that position. The new logic that’s coming says that an AI team in Franchise will “deprioritize drafting a first round QB” if any of seven conditions are met. Further, if a team has a starting quarterback over age 35, they’ll look at taking a replacement. EA Tiburon, the developing studio, spelled out those conditions in a blog post on Wednesday, but didn’t say exactly when this patch would launch. “Like real life, there can still be times where a team decides a player is just too good to pass up, depending on the situation,” Madden’s developers wrote. So the new draft logic doesn’t completely rule out bonehead situations; the Bears drafted Mitch Trubisky IRL, after all....

Kelly Loeffler, with Black voters in the Atlanta metro area, the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, and suburbs turning out to help Warnock win the seat. Warnock's projected victory is a significant breakthrough for African Americans in southern politics as his election is the culmination of years of voter registration drives conducted by former state House Democratic leader Stacey Abrams and other Black activists, who also helped flip Georgia...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers’ next general manager’s first order of business will be deciding what to do at quarterback. Teddy Bridgewater’s dud of a season ended with the journeyman QB getting benched in the second half of a 33-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday after he threw two interceptions in the end zone. Bridgewater went 4-11 as a starter and struggled to lead winning drives late in games. The Panthers are in the midst of finding a replacement for longtime GM Marty Hurney, who was fired last month. They’ve requested permission to talk to Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio, Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen, and Browns vide president of player personnel Kwesi Adofo-Mensah for the vacant GM job, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The team is also expected to interview former Giants general manager Jerry Reese. The...

The chief adviser for the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed said the worst impact of the new variant of the coronavirus is that it will make the current surge in COVID-19 cases worse. In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Dr. Moncef Slaoui said virus mutations are “part of its normal behavior,” so variants are to be expected. “Whats very important is to study those variants and understand how infectious they are, whether they have more impact in terms of morbidity or mortality, and critically now, whether they are still sensitive to the vaccines that have been developed,” he said. “And on those three counts, based on the information shared with us by the U.K. scientists and early data that we have here, we think that these viruses, these various variants should be under control with this vaccine. Fortunately, they are not more deadly to the population. They...
New York Yankees Analysis: The Yankees are in a best chance scenario, will they blow it? By: William Parlee January 3, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. In the last four seasons, the Yankees have had early exits in the postseason, denying the Yankees fans another championship. Now in the Yankee fan offseason of discontent, the Yankee front office is sitting on its hands waiting for one thing to happen to resign DJ LeMahieu. At the same time, they have a golden opportunity sitting in front of them that they are at least for the time being ignoring. The Tampa Bay Rays that took the division and the postseason away from them have let walk and traded away pitchers that denied the Yankees. Blake Snell and Charlie Morton. With a diminished Tampa Bay Rays team and...
We’re all in favor of cleaning hacks that make chores easier to do. This simple move will save you from hours of climbing up on a step stool to clean hard-to-reach places. Your roll of waxed paper will save you from having dusty cabinet tops and grease splatters around the kitchen. What Is the waxed paper hack? It’s so simple: You place a sheet of waxed paper on top of hard-to-see surfaces. Instead of sticking to the tops of cabinets, particles will stick to the surface of the waxed paper. Then, when it’s time to deep-clean the house, all you have to do is carefully fold the sheet up, toss it, and replace with a fresh one. If you have a powerful ceiling fan, or want to place the waxed paper somewhere that may be drafty, use double-sided tape to secure the paper in place and ensure that no dirt or grime can get underneath it.More...
Priti Patel said Britain will crack down on illegal immigration and ‘reform the broken asylum system’ – Stefan Rousseau/PA Britain will be a safer country to live in now it has left the European Union, Priti Patel has said. The Home Secretary pledged to use “even tougher powers to keep this country safe and protect our homeland security” after the UK quit the jurisdiction of the EU at the end of the Brexit transition period. The comments will be seen as a riposte to Brussels, which claimed last month that the UK would no longer have “direct, real-time access” to sensitive databases covering freedom, security and justice in its new trade deal. The deal was seen as diminishing the UK’s security because its membership of Europol, Eurojust, the European Arrest Warrant and real-time sensitive data-sharing agreements such as the Schengen Information System (SIS2) all ended last week. However, writing...
Montana will see its first Republican governor in over a decade when Greg Gianforte is sworn into office on Monday. Gianforte, currently a representative for Montana’s at-large House district, won 54% of the vote in the November election, and he won with the largest margin for a non-incumbent governor since 1920, according to KULR8. Republicans gained control of every statewide office after the November election and hold majorities in the Montana House of Representatives and Senate. The freshman-representative was elected to the House after President Trump nominated then-Rep. Ryan Zinke to serve as Interior Secretary. During a time when the entertainment industry is reckoning with a pandemic and its own racial improprieties, a Black queer journalist has an app for that. With PopViewers, Chris Witherspoon intends to give everyday people an opportunity to express video reactions and comments to what they are watching in real time. Currently available on Apple iOS, the app is striving to do what Witherspoon has done his entire career: Pass the mic back to a diverse community of viewers. “I created PopViewers, not only based on a trend I saw, but also because I genuinely want to democratize how we talk about content for my own sake—as a member and advocate of these communities,” Witherspoon told The Daily Beast. “While many successful tech platforms are marketing to people of color, we want to go many steps beyond this with PopViewers. It’s been the assumption for months and months that Trevor Lawrence will declare for the 2021 NFL Draft and presumably play for whichever team winds up with the No. 1 pick. The Clemson quarterback doesn’t have to declare, though. He’s only a junior and could conceptually return to college for one more season. It’s not a path many, if any, expect him to take, but it’s not entirely off the table. A declaration for the draft likely means Lawrence goes to the Jaguars, who secured the No. 1 pick over the Jets. Either that or he tries to pull an Eli Manning and leverage his way to a trade.  Here’s what you need to know about Lawrence’s possibilities as far as the NFL Draft goes.  MORE: Why Trevor Lawrence is a much better fit with Jaguars than Jets Will Trevor Lawrence declare for the NFL Draft? Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s adorable cameo was, let’s be honest, the best thing about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s otherwise not especially compelling first podcast for Spotify. After a rather dull half hour—a laundry list of their influential and celebrity pals complaining about how tough 2020 had been for them—Archie’s “Happy New Year,” accompanied by Harry’s giggling and trademark ‘Boom!’ in the background, was a truly uplifting and inspirational moment. Harry and Meghan, of course, would have known exactly what they were doing. They knew Archie’s first publicly spoken words would make news all over the world, despite the fact that the podcast itself failed to make the top 5 of Spotify’s global charts. They are unlikely to be complaining this weekend about upstaged by their 18-month old son, given that they stage-managed his public debut.

CHICAGO (CBS) — With outdoor dining the only way to make a buck, restaurants are struggling. As CBS 2’s Tara Molina learned Wednesday, help is on the way for some restaurants in the form of winterization grants. But those outdoor structures can’t just pop up overnight. One owner is hoping to hang on long enough turn that grant money into something good. Mom’s Place, at 650 N. Dearborn St. in River North, is paying about $20,000 a month just to keep business going. And they’re not making a dime. The hope now is that an outdoor structure they plan to set up will make the difference. Mom’s Place has played the waiting game. But with no takeout business and no outdoor setup, they’re hanging on by a very expensive thread. “I don’t see it getting better right now,” said owner Ron Prokaski. Prokaski said they have lost...

CAPTAIN Sir Tom Moore became a national hero this year, capturing our hearts by walking 100 sponsored laps around his garden ahead of his 100th birthday. Humbled by the outpouring of generosity from people across the globe, in September the former soldier and his family launched a foundation and began a new fundraising drive to support causes close to Captain Tom’s heart. His daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said: “We realised we had been given the most incredible gift and with that came a responsibility to create a legacy so that my father’s message of hope and positivity could live on.”  One priority Captain Tom has focused on is combating loneliness. It is an issue which The Sun has tackled this winter, too, with...
Ezekiel Elliott is confident in the Cowboys’ NFC playoff chances…if they get there. The Cowboys are surging at the right time, perhaps saving Mike McCarthy in the process. Photos from New York’s last “normal” fashion week in February look almost unrecognizable to pandemic-weary eyes. Models walked down runways unmasked, those aisles lined by guests sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. People greeted each other with hugs and air kisses. Weeks later in Milan, Anna Wintour would sit front row at Max Mara beneath her customary sunglasses, clutching her iPhone. She appeared to be her typical, laconic self—upon her return to the States, the Vogue editor in chief announced she would be “voluntarily self-quarantining” for two weeks. Ten months later, she’s still working from home. This year has kneecapped all creative industries; many might tell you that fashion ceased to matter in 2020. That’s not entirely inaccurate if you’re referring to the industry as a whole, especially old-guard bastions of commerce. A March report from the Boston Consulting Group estimated that the luxury category “will lose between $450 and $600 billion in...
The fate of the omnibus bill and the covid relief it includes are up in the air, since President Donald Trump has not signed it, and while he has not explicitly threatened a veto, he’s railed against some of the spending in the omnibus package and is calling for $2000 in direct payments instead of $600. And with the nation up against several important deadlines — per multiple reports unemployment benefits lapsed as of today — some Republicans are publicly pushing for Trump to sign the bill now. On Fox News Sunday, Senator Pat Toomey (R- PA) said bluntly, “You don’t get everything you want even if you’re the president of the United States.” Toomey said the covid relief measures are “really, really important,” and said unemployment benefits/PPP loans are still needed — adding, “I understand the president would like to send bigger checks everybody. Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey said President Donald Trump will be known for “chaos and misery and erratic behavior” if he refuses to sign the coronavirus stimulus bill. While the latest COVID-19 aid package passed Congress on Dec. 21 after months of negotiations, Trump threw a curveball into the mix on Tuesday when he demanded that the $600 in direct payments be expanded to $2,000. During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Toomey called the measures included in the bill “really, really important” and suggested that the fact that Trump hasn’t explicitly stated he would veto the legislation was a “hopeful sign.” WATCH: “I understand the president would like to send bigger checks to everybody,” Toomey told guest-host Mike Emanuel. “I think what he ought to do is sign this bill and then make the case. Congress can pass another bill. I don’t agree with $2,000 to people who...

DEAR MISS MANNERS: In a world where families live in separate parts of the country, I have a hard time keeping up with members of my own, especially nieces and nephews. I am not on social media, but even if I were, that would not give me addresses to send birthday cards or baby gifts. I have politely and repeatedly asked parents for details when they mention that Lily or Leo has a new house or baby. But physical addresses or the date of a birth are difficult to come by. Are new address notices or birth announcements no longer done? I understand that the families may be too busy to write letters to an aunt, but I enjoy sending cards and small gifts when appropriate. I need an address to do so. Related Articles Miss Manners: Everyone understands what I’m doing except my husband Miss...
IT’S Christmas time and it all feels a bit weird. There’s joy, tears and feeling downright miserable. Like the rest of 2020, it’s gearing up to be an emotional rollercoaster. 5This Christmas is going to be like no other, I like everyone else was gutted when lockdown was tightened last weekend My heart sank along with millions of others when London and the South East was plunged into Tier 4 last weekend. And it sank even further yesterday when more of the country was told they’ll join us on Boxing Day. How much more can we really all take? With all the sh*t 2020 has hurled our way, this was the thing that almost tipped me over the edge. I know Christmas is just a few days, and we can always just celebrate it another time. But for lots of people like me, it’s not that simple. For lots of...
Spend too much time binge-watching Netflix’s new Shonda Rhimes-produced, Regency era romance series Bridgerton, and you might come away haunted by a single question: Does Regé-Jean Page, the British actor who plays its rakish lead, Duke of Hastings Simon Basset, have a single bad angle? When offered the chance to address this question himself, the actor jokingly informed this writer that he does not appreciate the quest to find a chink in his sexy armor. “If you discover one, do let me know,” he added. “Send me an email, and I’ll do my best to have that shot burned.” It might be a stretch to say that Bridgerton, a crisply ruffled courtly romance based on a series by author Julia Quinn, is the show we “need” right now. Still, after an excruciating year, the beautifully crafted, delightfully executed romance is certainly a welcome arrival. And it doesn’t hurt that...
BOSTON (CBS) – There may be a pandemic going on right now, but rest assured…Santa Claus is still coming to town on Christmas Day. During his press conference on Wednesday, Gov. Charlie Baker issued a message to kids across Massachusetts that Santa Claus has been following all the right COVID-19 protocols and will be delivering presents as scheduled for Christmas. “My understanding is that Santa has a travel form that is good in every community, every state, every county, and every country in America and the world. And I also understand that he gets tested on a pretty regular basis – so do most of the folks that are part of his team,” Baker said. With the first round of doses of the coronavirus vaccine making their way across the country, the Governor says Santa made his way on that list to get it. “I’m pretty sure he was on...

Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano (D) announced Monday that he would not be seeking cash bail for non-violent offenders, formalizing a policy he and his prosecutors have been practicing since Descano took office in January 2020. “I’ve long said that the laws on the books should match the values in our hearts. Cash bail is unjust, racially biased, and doesn’t make our community safer,” Descano said in a Twitter announcement. “That’s why my office won’t request it and why I call on the legislature to end it.” In a Washington Post op-ed Descano said, “Simply put, cash bail creates a two-tiered justice system: one for rich people and one for everyone else. People who sit in jail risk losing their jobs for nonattendance, which, in short order, could lead to the loss of their housing, and in some cases the loss of custody...

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the US Senate seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. President Biden is going to need some Twitter followers. Twitter plans to wipe out all followers from the @POTUS and @WhiteHouse accounts once Biden is sworn in on January 20th, rather than transferring the accounts’ existing followers over to the new administration, according to Rob Flaherty, Biden’s digital director. The accounts for @FLOTUS and @PressSec are among around a dozen others that are set to be transferred to the new administration under the same policies, according to The Wall Street Journal. This is a reversal from what Twitter did in 2016 when the Trump administration took over accounts from the Obama administration. Back then, Twitter essentially duplicated the existing accounts, creating an archive of Obama-era tweets and followers and building a new set of accounts for the incoming administration that retained all of those followers without any of the tweets. The Biden administration will miss out on tens of millions...
Biden to pick Miguel Cardona, proponent of reopening schools, as education secretary EPA revises lead rule, sidestepping calls for more stringent standards 12 predictions that will determine the NBA season Only two months after the Los Angeles Lakers were crowned as champions inside the bubble, a new NBA season arrives with the league returning to home arenas. The NBA is set to play a condensed 72-game schedule as the global pandemic continues to rage on, though there’s hope that the vaccine will be widely distributed in the coming months. This was the shortest offseason in league history for teams that made a deep playoff run in the bubble. Meanwhile, the teams that didn’t qualify for the season restart haven’t played since March. With superstars like Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry returning after missing all of last season, it feels like so much of this year is unknowable. What...
