The Board Game:

There’s a new tabletop game on the way that’s set in the universe of Vampire: The Masquerade, but if you don’t shell out money for it now, you might never get the chance to buy it at a store. Vampire: The Masquerade – Chapters is a campaign-in-a-box in the style of Gloomhaven, a role-playing game that doesn’t require a game master to run. As with many other high-concept tabletop games right now, Chapters’ developers say it’s simply too big and too expensive to ever come to retail. We sat down with Flyos Games to learn more, and to tease apart the economic realities that are changing the landscape for high-concept board games. Chapters is the third game by Thomas Filippi and Gary Paitre, two French designers who live in Montreal. Their first two board games — a fast-paced family title called Kiwetin and a card-based zombie game called Until Daylight...
Some of board gaming’s smallest genres are also some of its most interesting, and that’s certainly true of dating games. The genre goes all the way back to the 1960s, with the classic — and wildly problematic — Mystery Date. But Mondo Games (Unmatched) has launched a colorful new contender. It’s called Dream Crush, and it’s one of the most intriguing games to come out this year. The driving mechanic in Dream Crush is a light narrative storytelling engine. Players secretly choose one of three nonplayer characters (NPCs) to be their crush each round, and then they draw a card. On that card is a complication. Perhaps the NPCs invite you to be on their bar trivia team, or maybe you need to co-sign a lease with them. Next come the secrets — tiny tidbits about each crush that you learn over time. Secrets are divided into multiple categories: Accolades,...
GORDON Ramsay has a new quiz show beginning TONIGHT (January 24). It's a step away from his usual chef related shows. 2Gordon Ramsay is hosting a new show How does Gordon Ramsay's Bank Balance work? Gordon Ramsay will be hosting Bank Balance, a new show focused on winning gold bars to take home money. Contestants will play in pairs and place different sized gold bars on a balancing board by answering questions. They'll get a chance to pick the categories for which they answer questions on. The more bars they can successfully balance, the more chance they have of taking a big sum home - but the more bars added to the board, the more unstable it becomes. If all the bars are lost, contestants will leave without any cash prizes. The most contestants can win is a whopping £100,000. The BBC say contestants will be tested on "poise, precision,...
Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe is giving you a new way to run a farm without having to, you know, run an actual farm. The developer has announced that the beloved simulation RPG now comes in the form of a board game, which you can purchase for $55. Stardew Valley: The Board Game is a cooperative tabletop wherein you have to work together with up to four friends to turn the property you inherited from your grandfather into a thriving farm in order to drive the nefarious Joja Corporation out of town.  Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone says he worked with board game designer Cole Medeiros for two-and-a-half years to come up with a final product that “captures the essence of Stardew Valley.” The game uses a season deck to decide the weather and events, and like in the original game, you can mine, fish, water crops or tend to your animals. You...
The original Monopoly board game was inspired by segregated Atlantic City in the 1930s with property prices reflecting deep racial disparities between white and black residents, an author has claimed.   Mary Pilon, who wrote her book The Monopolists about the hidden history of the beloved board game in 2015, argued that it's property values 'reflect a legacy of racism and inequality' in an essay published in The Atlantic on Monday.  Monopoly, which is produced and sold around the world by Hasbro, was derived from a real estate game that a woman named Lizzie Magie patented in the US in 1904. It quickly spread across the country, where it was adapted into several different versions.   In her essay Pilon asserted that the most common American version of the game today was created in the 1930s by a realtor named Jesse Raiford, who modeled his board after his hometown of Atlantic City.  ...

Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game has lost its publisher, and with it the rights to the Konami video game franchise on which it was based. According to a forum post by designer Emerson Matsuuchi, IDW Games is no longer moving forward with the project. They claim that the decision was made in December. It’s unclear what that means for the several thousand people who appear to have pre-ordered the game, which was to cost $125 at retail. News Brig has reached out to IDW and Konami for more information. Announced in December 2018, Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game was well into development, with prototypes — including miniatures — shown on multiple occasions throughout 2019. The project encountered multiple delays, but it’s unclear precisely why its publisher backed out. A version of the game was expected for both Tabletop Simulator and the Tabletopia platform in March. “I have...

Not too long ago my mother told me about how chess has gained fresh popularity due to The Queen’s Gambit, a recent Netflix drama named after a fundamental opening. I’m an avid chess player and like to think of myself as a somewhat formidable opponent. My main adversary is Wally, an especially gifted player with chess pieces tattooed on his knuckles. In his quest to practice enough to become a grandmaster, he beats me consistently. I don’t mind losing to Wally, but being in prison during the COVID-19 pandemic is the worst. It’s like being at the center of one of those Russian nesting dolls—a box within a box within a box. Social-distancing policies limit our...
The Witcher series is already quite the franchise, consisting of video game, novels, and a TV series, along with an upcoming anime and prequel. You might not remember that developer CD Projekt Red also developed a board game version back in 2014. Now, the company has announced that it’s creating another board game called The Witcher: Old World in partnership with publisher Go on Board. The card-driven adventure game, designed for two to five players, takes place “long before times of Geralt of Rivia,” the publisher wrote. You’ll take on the roll of a professional monster slayer after completing the “brutal training” in one of the witcher schools, including the School of the Wolf, Bear, Manticore and Crane. You’ll be able to battle monsters, sign up for contracts and even fight witchers from competing schools. The deck of cards will determine hit points and triggers for abilities and attacks, while...

Months later, I can still see her jaw drop, her eyes widen with fear at the thought of being vulnerable to a stranger again. As Clare's therapist, I was discussing how a divorced woman could embrace dating again in her mid-50s. She had met a man but had no idea what to do next. What I told her came as a surprise — she should think of a chess move. I've found in my 16 years as a therapist that chess moves can be handy analogies to guide one through tricky matters of the heart. Today, love of chess is back in fashion — Netflix success The Queen's Gambit has made a game once reserved for male grandees sexy and accessible. The show became the most-watched limited series in the streaming service's history and caused a surge in sales of chess sets. Psychotherapist Jenny Merriot (pictured) explains how the...
Trevor Lawrence, Clemson Tigers. (Mandatory Credit: Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports) The NFL season is entering the Divisional Round this weekend, which means the 2021 NFL Draft is ever so close. As we enter the Divisional Round of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, we have eight teams remaining that all have a shot at winning it all. If the Super Wild Card Weekend was any indication, we are in for an exciting weekend, as the field gets whittled down to four before Championship Sunday. With that said, here is our latest 2021 NFL Mock Draft. 1 Trevor Lawrence Quarterback, Jacksonville Jaguars No change here, as Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is still the consensus first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. One of the reasons that tabletop games have become so popular over the last two decades is that they bring people together. The ongoing pandemic made in-person gatherings nearly impossible throughout 2020, and this time apart from our friends and neighbors will have repercussions for the board game and role-playing game industries for years to come. But the coronavirus wasn’t the only hurdle that the industry encountered last year. Labor issues and the Black Lives Matter movement forced many to confront the racism and inequities in a hobby they love. The resulting cultural reckoning put some of the industry’s biggest names in the hot seat. To round out the year, News Brig reached out to voices from throughout the tabletop industry to talk about their experience. Our story also serves as a guide to trends that will have an impact in 2021 and beyond. Independent retailers in crisis When social...

Slay the Spire, the hit single-player digital card game, is being developed as a cooperative tabletop card game. A crowdfunding campaign is scheduled for this spring on Kickstarter, but no pricing or delivery date has been announced. Those interested are being asked to sign up to be notified once the campaign launches. Slay the Spire launched into Steam early access in 2018, where it almost immediately developed a rabid following. The game eventually arrived on modern consoles and iOS. An Android version is also in the works. The roguelike dungeon-crawling adventure uses the same kind of gameplay mechanics that make collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering so addictive. Many thousands of players have sunk many thousands of hours into it over the years. Meanwhile, the game has received critical acclaim — including here at News Brig. “Mastering Slay the Spire doesn’t come through learning the game’s systems,” wrote our...

It’s been a challenging year for just about everyone, including those of us who love tabletop games. What comfort can be found rolling dice with friends can evaporate when you can’t actually be together in the same room. But folks have still managed to play board games, role-playing games, and more during this time of social distancing. In fact, it feels as though the hobby has actually grown by leaps and bounds. Virtual tabletop software like Tabletop Simulator and services like Board Game Arena have seen a massive uptick in users. Still more folks have turned to platforms like Roll20 to keep their weekly RPG games going, or to start new ones. Throughout 2020, people still managed to come together — physically when they could manage, and online when they couldn’t. Sometimes it was to play the latest and greatest. But, just as often, longtime favorites were brought down out...

If the Bulls want to make the playoffs next season they need to nail the No. 4 pick in the draft. Here’s how Chicago should construct their big board.  The hiring of Billy Donovan should usher in a healthy new era of Bulls basketball. Of course, Chicago needs to upgrade their roster talent if they really want to be Eastern Conference playoff contenders next season. Drafting a potential star at No. 4 could catapult the Bulls up the conference standings. Avdija approaches the game much differently than Markkanen. He’s a tough, physical player who wants to mix it up on the interior. The intriguing aspect of Avdija’s game is that he also has the foot speed to guard smaller players out on the perimeter. He’s never going to stop speedy point guards in isolation, but he should be able to hold his own against powerful wings at the next level....
Forget Mediterranean and Baltic avenues, Monopoly gets the California treatment — minus the traffic on I-80 — in a new artistic version of the classic board game. A newly released limited edition of the classic board game comes with a scenic California route where players can take in the view from the Pacific Coast Highway, cruise along Route 66, check out Rodeo Drive, head to the desert or up to the Bay Area for a look at the Lower Haight. “I loved Monopoly my entire life and I love California and I was honored to be invited to do this beautiful new take on Monopoly,” said Kathleen Keifer, the Manhattan Beach artist behind the new “California Dreaming” version of Monopoly, which is $199 via Amazon and Kathleenkeifer.com. That’s spendy for a board game, but not so spendy for art — and the first 100 games will be signed and numbered...

The Atlanta Braves finally got on the board after getting pummeled by the Los Angeles Dodgers early in Game 3 of the NLCS. On Wednesday morning, the Atlanta Braves woke up in a great mood. They held a 2-0 lead over the heavily-favored Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, and looked to extend it to three later on in the evening. That didn’t happen, as the Dodgers dropped a historic 11-runs in the first-inning. Unfortunately for Atlanta, that lead extended to 15-0 three innings later. After getting punched in the mouth repeatedly by the team from Hollywood, the Braves finally got on the board, as prospect outfielder Cristian Pache hit a solo home run to left field off pitcher Julio Urias, cutting their deficit to 15-1. LOGAN SQUARE — Cards Against Humanity is out as the owner and operator of the Chicago Board Game Cafe. Earlier this month, the card game crew sold its elaborately designed board game cafe at 1965 N. Milwaukee Ave. to the Canadian board game cafe chain Snakes & Lattes. The cafe will reopen under Snakes & Lattes’ ownership Oct. 14, according to a news release. The Cards Against Humanity founders, in an emailed statement from a company spokeswoman, pointed to their lack of experience running such a business and the pandemic as their reasons for selling. “We wanted to put the cafe in the hands of a company with expertise in running board game cafes, expertise we did not have,” the founders said. “Given the pandemic, we believe this is the best way to give this magical place and its hardworking staff the best chance to succeed.” The sale comes a few months...
What's in a name? That's the question on the table today, when the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board holds its first meeting to begin considering the backlog of name-change requests regarding controversial locations in Colorado, including rivers, mountains, valleys and other physical spots. The United States Board on Geographic Names, which determines the outcome of such requests, first consults with the state in which the disputed item is located, as well as other affected groups. But for several years, there's been no official Colorado entity with which to consult. That's because when John Hickenlooper was governor, in an effort to streamline government, he eliminated what seemed like a useless task assigned to the Colorado State Archives after the longtime state archivist retired. On Friday, toy maker Hasbro dropped a bombshell on the world of tabletop gaming. HeroQuest, the classic dungeon-crawling adventure first published in 1990, is back. The Rhode Island-based company launched a new website, including a mysterious timer. It’s currently counting down to an announcement at noon ET on Sept. 21. Originally published by Milton Bradley, with art and miniatures by Games Workshop, the light role-playing game was designed by the legendary Stephen Baker (Space Crusade, BattleMasters, HeroQuest expansions). Older fans will likely remember the game for it’s lavish live-action commercials, while modern fans may recognize it more for its meme-worthy celebration by YouTuber BardicBroadcasts. After a series of expansions a more advanced sequel and, the lineage of HeroQuest was split in two. Games Workshop continued to publish spiritual successors under the Warhammer Quest line. The latest was set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and titled Warhammer Quest: Blacks tone...
The next expansion of the sprawling League of Legends universe is something unexpected: a board game called Tellstones. This isn’t developer Riot’s first foray into tabletop games — that would be 2016’s Mechs vs. Minions — but what makes Tellstones interesting is that it’s a game set within the franchise’s expansive fantasy realm. “We portray Tellstones as a game that’s actually played in Runeterra, as part of their history and culture in the same way that chess or mancala have ancient roots in our own world,” explains Greg Street, Riot’s VP of IP and entertainment. The developer isn’t talking too much about how the game works just yet, but you can get an idea in the teaser trailer below. Tellstones appears to be a game about strategy and subterfuge, where players have to remember the order of tokens and also trick their opponent into forgetting. It’s a far cry from...
Monster Hunter: World is being turned into a board game by the experienced team at Steamforged Games. The cooperative multiplayer title will feature enormous new plastic models and will be priced in the $100 range. Fans should expect a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for Monster Hunter: World — The Board Game to launch some time in 2021. Steamforged Games, a British tabletop developer and publisher, has made a name for itself with a string of board games based on high-profile video game franchises. Steamforged burst onto the scene in 2016, raising more than $5.4 million for Dark Souls: The Board Game. Then it followed that up with Resident Evil 2: The Board Game, Horizon: Zero Dawn — The Board Game and, most recently, Devil May Cry: The Bloody Palace. Most importantly, none of those games aims to be a straight-up port of the original property that they’re based on. While...
There is a difference between a lottery and a bingo game. Thursday evening, the NBA will conduct the 2020 draft lottery, in which first prize is basically a $160 pot, depending on whether Grandpa Joe pays on time. The drafts of 2013, 2006, 2001 and 1989 will, in the coming years, have some serious competition on the list of all-time worst vintages for pro basketball prospects. It will take an extraordinary scouting team to find the rare jewels available to be selected on Oct. 16 as part of the NBA Draft class of 2020. It will take a special brand of audacity to look at this pool of players and comfortably choose one of them as the first overall pick. That’s the job, though. At least those of us ranking the prospects won’t have to actually put them in a game. NBA DRAFT MISTAKES: Every team’s ugliest, most painful regret (Getty Images)...
There’s a new take on the classic game Small World, and it’s about recreating the many wars that have happened in World of Warcraft. The board game Small World of Warcraft is set in Azeroth, and two to five players can compete to see who will take over the various zones that make up the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. Players can take roles like the Blood Elves, the Orcs, the Dwarves, and the Worgen. There are even some fan-favorite races that players can’t choose in the MMORPG, like the Naga and the Ethereals. Small World was originally released in 2009. It presaged the board game boom, arriving on the scene before Kickstarter became the force that it is today in bringing new tabletop games to life. The civilization-style game from publisher Days of Wonder is well-regarded for both its complex but easy-to-learn systems and its endearing art style. The game...
Blacklist Games and Kess Co. will launch a new board game based on Konami’s Contra next year, 34 years after the game originally debuted as a coin-operated arcade game. Contra later came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, a year later. Contra: The Board Game is a co-op game for 1-4 players. Players will need to work together to defeat The Red Falcon Army. Each game, players will dodge hazards on the board and pick up new weapons, all to help defeat a boss. Players can also play cards to defeat enemies and clear some of the board’s more dangerous areas. But Contra: The Board Game operates on a timer, and Commandos only have so long to defeat the boss. Each Commando works differently in Contra: The Board Game Image: Blacklist Games/Kess Co. When the game starts, players can select...
Dear Mr. Hasbro, Again, thank you for providing me with my fondest childhood memories of sitting around the card table with my family playing board games. We have been doing a lot of that again lately and only wish there was a new exciting board we could enjoy that reflected these uncertain times teeming with strife and boredom. I’m sure your company will recall that in the past I have pitched you some ideas inspired by my favorite Parker Bros. games like Trouble, Sorry!, Aggravation, Risk, and Headache. I had made the mistake, I realize now, of trying to second guess you would want more games based on pain and suffering and understand why you rejected Trauma, Mourn, Gout! and Mass Destruction—they were too depressing and unappealing to teenagers.
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 23: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees celebrates with Aaron Judge #99 after hitting a two run home run to center field against Max Scherzer #31 of the Washington Nationals during the first inning in the game at Nationals Park on July 23, 2020 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images) Giancarlo Stanton welcomed baseball back with a mammoth blast. Baseball is back, and so is New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton wasted no time putting the first runs on the board of the abbreviated 2020 season. With two out in the top of the first inning on Thursday at Nationals Park, Stanton connected with a 95 mph fastball from Nationals starter Max Scherzer for a two-run home run that quickly put the Yankees ahead of the defending World Series champions. The home run to left-center field was measured at 459 feet...

That means they’ve spent much of this quarantine period in a desperate battle with anxious boredom, working to keep the walls from closing in. For some, that’s a recipe for Game Night! In a Zoom media availability yesterday, Celtics forward and noted (old-timey) gamer Grant Williams talked about sharing quarantine space with Kemba Walker and trying to coax his teammate to the table: “The best I could get was Uno and cards. No such things as board games — that’s where we differ. He doesn’t like to sit in places for a long time and I’m just like, ‘yeah, I understand that.’ He’s not sitting for three hours trying play Monopoly, or...
Crucible was released on May 20. Sort of. After a month of open release and a complete lack of interest from almost everyone, Crucible is being taken out of release and moved back into a closed beta. According to a post from the Crucible development team, players will have until noon ET on Wednesday to download the game from Steam before it’s closed to new players. In the near future, the post says, interested players will be able to sign up through playcrucible.com. While the game is closed, the development team will attempt to improve Crucible in the many ways it has already outlined. The development team also plans to have regularly scheduled playtimes each week where the developers can directly interact with the closed-beta players. The developers at Relentless Studios are also putting together a small council of players that it hopes can help shape the future...
If you lost your job because of the novel coronavirus pandemic you’re eligible for a free board game or two, no strings attached. The offer comes courtesy of GMT Games, publishers of some of the very best strategy board games and wargames around. The announcement was made on Wednesday via the company’s official newsletter. “We know that this virus, in addition to the threat it poses to our collective health, has had a negative economic impact on many of our customers, as well,” GMT said. “As with so many social or economic problems, it’s not within our power to provide big fixes — to restore lost jobs, retirement funds, or lost earning power. But we’ve decided, as we did numerous times in the wake of the 2008 financial meltdown, that we can show support for those of you who have lost jobs by giving you a free game or two.”...
By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The executive board of the Major League Baseball Players Association rejected a proposed 60-game schedule by a 33-5 vote, daring Commissioner Rob Manfred to give a unilateral order for the regular season's start and provoke what figures to be lengthy and costly litigation over the impact of the coronavirus on the sport. The union's vote was confirmed by a person familiar with the meeting who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the balloting was not made public. “It’s absolute death for this industry to keep acting as it has been. Both sides,” Cincinnati pitcher Trevor Bauer tweeted in a rare instance of a player criticizing the union. “We’re driving the bus straight off a cliff. How is this good for anyone involved? Covid 19 already presented a lose lose lose situation and we’ve somehow found a...
