COINCIDENCE? IRONY? A Paterson man accused of shooting a 15-year-old boy nearly two years ago was caught selling drugs and carrying a loaded rifle just days after another man charged in the same shooting was captured, authorities said. Dear Quentin, My son, 35, has been married for 3 years with one child. He recently came to me with what I consider to be a stunningly unusual dilemma.   He wanted my counsel on the idea of a second child, something he desires greatly  He was married in 2017, and the first child was born in 2019. It turns out that his wife, 35, is very reluctant not, as she claims, to have another child, but to bear another child. She says she would agree to surrogacy at a cost exceeding $200,000. She claims this is her right, as a feminist, and that she is entitled to control what happens with her body. At this point, I was at a total loss. It’s something I can’t even imagine physically, emotionally, socially, or financially.   “ This does NOT seem to be a good use of money for a healthy couple...
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Senate acquitted Donald Trump on Saturday in his second impeachment trial in a year, with fellow Republicans blocking conviction over the former president's role in the deadly assault by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol. The Senate vote of 57-43 fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection after a five-day trial in the same building ransacked by his followers on January 6, shortly after they heard him deliver a fiery speech. In the vote, seven of the 50 Senate Republicans joined the chamber's unified Democrats in favoring conviction. Trump left office on January 20, so impeachment could not be used to remove him from power. But Democrats had hoped to secure a conviction to hold him responsible for a siege that left a police officer and four other people dead and to set the stage for a...

The GOP defections nevertheless stand as a sharp rebuke of the former President. The Republicans who voted for conviction were: Richard Burr Bill Cassidy Susan Collins Mitt Romney Lisa Murkowski Pat Toomey Ben Sasse This story is breaking and will be updated.

McConnell made his position known on what could be the last day of the former president's impeachment trial. 'While a close call, I am persuaded that impeachments are a tool primarily of removal and we therefore lack jurisdiction,' McConnell said in the letter.   Although he had denounced Trump's actions in an emotional Senate floor speech immediately after the Jan. 6 MAGA riot in the Capitol, McConnell also did not act to hasten the impeachment trial while Trump was still in office. Sports Jason Witten's time with the Raiders was ordinary, but he was a fantasy football staple while with the Cowboys. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) Jason Witten’s second and presumably final retirement hit the news wire midday Wednesday. I didn’t find out for a good 10 hours. No one texted me, emailed me, or prompted me on Twitter for some Witten talk or reaction. I guess part of this speaks to how ordinary Witten’s final two years were, but it also strikes me that Witten was probably underappreciated for a good bit of his career. And I feel a little melancholy about that. Some NFL and fantasy fans of a certain age will mostly...
After what Austin Rivers did today, the New York Knicks would probably be thanking their lucky stars for making the decision to get him on board. It is paying off in more ways than expected. And now in their second matchup with the Utah Jazz, the Knicks star put up incredible numbers on the board, enough to make it a record-breaking performance. Austin Rivers sets the standard In the first week of January, the Knicks were set to play the Utah Jazz. So when Rivers put up 23 points, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter, everyone thought they had seen Rivers’ limit. The question popped up: could he get any better than this? How would anyone have known that it was in his second matchup with Jazz that he would truly show his potential? It seems like Rivers sets his mind on destroying Utah. In just the first...
A Washington father has been charged with second degree murder, nearly two years after shooting dead his daughter’s boyfriend when he found him hiding in her bedroom after curfew. Charles Frederick Heller, 49, is accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Dustyn Hunt inside his Everett home in February 2019, after becoming angry that his daughter Lauryn Heller, then 20, had tried to sneak Hunt into her room for the night. He reportedly armed himself before knocking on his daughter’s bedroom door to confront the couple. A struggle ensued between Mr. Heller and Hunt, and the father pulled the trigger of his semi-automatic handgun, striking Hunt once in the chest. Charles Heller claims he fired the gun in self-defense, believing Hunt was going to choke him, police said. Lauryn Heller, however, argued that Hunt didn’t attack him in any way. Mr. Heller was charged Monday in Snohomish County Superior Court with second-degree...
The playboy Thai king has reportedly made history by making his mistress the country's second queen, despite previously jailing her for 'disrespecting' the current queen. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 68, crowned Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi on Tuesday, her 36th birthday, Bild reported. The pair wore matching blue coats as they released fish and birds in a Buddhist ceremony to mark her birthday at Wasukri pier in Bangkok. It's an astonishing rise for the king's royal consort who was thrown out of the palace and jailed for trying to block her rival Queen Suditha's coronation in 2019. Last month a trove of naked selfies said to be taken by Sineenat were leaked online, revealing the bitter infighting which still rages at court among the king's harem of mistresses.   King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 68, crowned Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi on Tuesday, her 36th birthday. The pair wore matching blue coats as they took part in a Buddhist...

Doncic, between Williams and Carter, at the Mavericks Bulls. Ron Jenkins / AP Luka Doncic added another telling statistic of the enormous quality he treasures in beating Michael Jordan in triple-doubles total. The legendary Bulls player added 28, the Mavericks star, at 21 years old and at the beginning of his third season, already accumulates 29. Happiness was not complete for Doncic because the 36 points, 16 rebounds and 15 assists that got not enough ammunition for his team to beat the Bulls (101-117). By now we are accustomed to the dazzling runs made by Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. The Florida-born athlete has taken the ‘dual-threat quarterback’ role to a whole new level since bursting onto the scene in 2019. After Michael Vick, one can say that Jackson is the next player to have transformed the quarterback position. However, veteran Green Bay Packers superstar, Aaron Rodgers, proved that he can do the same and more. At 37, Aaron Rodgers started for the Packers in their Divisional Round Playoff against Los Angeles Rams. He had to wait until the second quarter to get his first passing touchdown of the game. Whom did he connect with? WR Davante Adams, of course. But it was later during that quarter that Rodgers truly stunned the Rams with a sensational individual play. Donald Trump awarded country music singer Toby Keith with the National Medal of the Arts as he was being impeached for an unprecedented second time on Wednesday. The outgoing president presented Keith, 59, with the nation’s highest award for the arts during a ‘closed press ceremony’ in the East Room of the White House yesterday. Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer uploaded an image to Instagram of a Trump standing next to Keith, who appears to be sporting a somber expression. The ceremony, reportedly over within ‘just minutes’, came as the House, led by Nancy Pelosi, voted to impeach Trump for a second time for his role in 'inciting insurrection' in last week’s violent riots at the Capitol. While the president was unable to post about the ceremony on social media, having been banned from multiple platforms, Keith, meanwhile, has made no mention of receiving the high presidential honor...
More On: impeachment All the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump a second time Pelosi signs second impeachment documents over Capitol siege Trump calls for unity, disavows violence in video message after impeachment Rep. Scalise calls for House to hail Capitol Police officers Let’s stipulate that President Trump’s conduct during the mob assault on Capitol Hill was appalling. If his fiery rhetoric didn’t amount to illegal incitement, his inflaming mob passions was deeply irresponsible. Even so, impeaching him a second time was a grave mistake. Perhaps Trump’s conduct is impeachable in the abstract. In Federalist No. 65, Alexander Hamilton defined the Constitution’s “high crimes and misdemeanors” impeachment criterion as an “abuse or violation of some public trust.” The phrase “high crimes and misdemeanors,” which goes back to 14th-century English common law, doesn’t require criminal action.  Impeachment, in other words, is ultimately a political judgment, and it’s hard to blame legislators who...
President-elect Joe Biden on Monday said those that 'engaged in sedition and threatened people's lives' during last week's attack on Capitol Hill should be held accountable.  Asked if President Donald Trump had been among those engaging in sedition, Biden said: 'I've been clear that President Trump should not be in office. Period.' The House is expected to impeach Trump this week but the Senate - given that it doesn't return to Washington D.C. until January 19th - is unlikely to tackle the issue before Trump leaves office, meaning the early days of Biden's presidency would be taken up with his predecessor's trial.   But Biden said he has the 'hope and expectation' that the Senate could hold an impeachment trial while confirming his Cabinet nominees and working on an additional COVID relief package.  'Look, my priority is to get first and foremost the stimulus bill passed,' he said. 'I had a discussion...
Donald Trump has started putting together a defense team for a second impeachment trial with Rudy Giuliani and Alan Dershowitz said to both be in the running. Two sources told CNN Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney and the man who spearheaded the president's failed legal efforts to overturn the presidential election, is expected to represent Trump if the unprecedented event of a second impeachment trial materializes. The sources said Trump is also considering hiring Dershowitz, the controversial celebrity attorney who represented him at his first impeachment trial in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Dershowitz, who has infamously worked on the defense teams for OJ Simpson, Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein, said it would be an 'honor and privilege' to defend the president for a second time.  House Democrats will introduce their impeachment resolution on Monday charging Trump with 'incitement of insurrection' for his part in stoking up the...

A Florida man has become the third American to be officially diagnosed with the mutant 'super-COVID-19' strain.  The Florida Department of Health confirmed the diagnosis on Thursday night. Officials said the man is in his 20s, lives in Martin County and has no history of travel.   Two other cases of the mutant strain, which was first detected in the United Kingdom and is thought to be 70 percent more transmissible than the original, were confirmed earlier this week, the first in Colorado and second in California. Colorado officials say they are also investigating a second suspected case in the state.  The emergence of the strain in the US comes as many states weather harrowing surges in cases, hospitalizations and deaths while the vaccine rollout falls further and further behind schedule.   This is a developing story.

The Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback took the play-calling into his own matters.  The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ offense has struggled for the last month and a half. Part of that is due to the regression of Ben Roethlisberger‘s arm. The other is due to due to Randy Fichtner still retaining the rights as the offensive coordinator. Roethlisberger threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives. He looked like old Big Ben once again. More than that, the Steelers’ offense looked competent with a limited run game. This is the Steelers team fans love to root for. It’s also the one that looked like the last undefeated team in the NFL for 2020. Hopefully, it stays for Week 17 and Roethlisberger is calling his own plays. If not, at least Mike Tomlin can admit it’s Fichtner needs to be shown the door. At the end of the fourth quarter of Wednesday night’s Game 6, Pascal Siakam took the final two shots for the Raptors. He missed both, and the tight contest went to overtime. At the end of the first overtime period, Norman Powell missed a pull-up 3-pointer on a stagnant isolation play, and the battle continued. Finally, near the conclusion of the second overtime stanza, the ball found its way into the right man’s hands. New court documents filed this week in the case against four Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd provide new context to how he died. While Hennepin County chief medical examiner Dr. Andrew Baker has determined that Floyd’s death was a homicide, new documents this week show that Baker also thought Floyd had a “fatal level” of fentanyl in his system. He is “not saying this killed him.” A memorandum filed by the Hennepin County Attorney’s office on June 1 indicated that Baker thought the amount of fentanyl in Floyd’s blood was “pretty high” and could be “a fatal level of fentanyl under normal circumstances.” EX-COP TOU THAO'S VIDEO CAPTURES HORROR DURING GEORGE FLOYD ARREST “[Dr. Baker] said that if Mr. Floyd had been found dead in his home (or anywhere else) and there were no other contributing factors he would conclude that it was an overdose death,”...

Kim Jong Un has promoted his sister to second-in-command of North Korea, according to South Korea's spy agency.  Kim Yo Jong, 32, is now in charge of North Korean policy towards the US and South Korea, effectively making her his de-facto deputy, spy chiefs said. Her brother still maintains 'absolute authority' over North Korea, but has delegated some responsibilities to help him deal with the 'stress' of ruling, it was claimed. The report comes months after 36-year-old Kim disappeared from public view for 21 days, amid speculation he was seriously ill. An attorney for one of the police officers involved in the death of George Floyd is arguing that Floyd overdosed on fentanyl during the arrest and thus the officers should not have been charged with his murder. Citing newly released body camera footage of the May 25 incident, attorney Earl Gray, who is representing former Minneapolis police officer Thomas Lane, said Floyd took “2 milligrams of fentanyl, a lethal dose," before being taken to the ground by police. The Hennepin County medical examiner ruled Floyd's cause of death "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression." The report found Floyd had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system when he died and also tested positive for the coronavirus. A second autopsy commissioned by Floyd's family listed his cause of death as "asphyxiation from sustained pressure." “All he had to do is sit in the police...
A second person has been charged in connection with the death of a 27-year-old soldier who was killed near the embattled Fort Hood base in Texas. On May 18 the body of Army Pfc. Brandon S. Rosecrans was discovered in a ditch suffering several gunshot wounds and his 2016 Jeep Renegade was found three miles away 'completely engulfed in flames'. His death was just one of a string of mysterious disappearances and deaths to take place at the base, which came under fire following the April disappearance of 20-year-old soldier Vanessa Guillen. She was brutally murdered, allegedly by another soldier at the base, and her remains were found June 30.  On August 5 Brandon Michael Olivares, a 28-year-old resident of Killeen, was arrested and charged with murder in Rosecrans' death. According to the affidavit Olivares and Rosecrans got into an argument over the sale price of a gun and Olivares...
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Austin Cindric won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on the road course at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, his fifth victory in the last six events. Cindric looked like the guy to beat early and escaped a melee on a restart late to stay in contention. He passed leader Brandon Jones shortly after taking the green flag with five laps to go on the 14-turn, 3.61-mile layout and did what he’s done often lately — celebrate in victory lane. It was his second win in two weeks on a road course. He won at Road America in Wisconsin last week. Much like that one, his toughest competition at Daytona was Chase Briscoe and AJ Allmendinger. But Briscoe and Allmendinger sustained damage on another restart with seven to go. They got caught up in a wild and aggressive dive into the first turn. About a dozen...

A man in his 20s has died of bubonic plague in New Mexico, state health authorities confirmed on Friday.  His death came only a few days after another case of plague, in man in his 60s, became the first diagnosed in the state this year.  The two men lived more than one hundred miles apart, so it's unlikely the cases are linked, but health officials are now investigating the home and family of the young man that died of the rare infection.  It comes after a squirrel in neighboring Colorado tested positive for Yesinia Pestis bacteria, which causes bubonic plague and reports of a potential outbreak in China.  A New Mexico man in his 20s has become the first to die of the plague in the US this year after contracting Yesinia Pestis bacteria (pictured, in red file)  Chinese officials have sealed off a city and a village in...
Democrats and their media allies like to paint Donald Trump as a foreign-policy catastrophe. Even some conservatives have joined the angry chorus. Neocon stalwart Eliot Cohen, for example, has attacked Trump’s policies as “deeply misguided” and a strategic disaster. The critics couldn’t be more wrong. The truth is, Trump has scored a series of foreign-policy and national-security successes, based on key principles we can call the “Trump Doctrine” — an approach sharply different from that of Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush but still rooted in longstanding American traditions. First, the Trump Doctrine is about renewing American sovereignty. The president believes the primary actors in world affairs aren’t international organizations like the United Nations but nation-states. Sovereign states are able to set the agenda because they control territory, population and borders. They pursue their interests by mobilizing their economic, political and military power. That applies to America as much...
