The fire broke out across the street from Nevada City City Hall on scenic Broad Street as fresh snow covered some of the downtown rooftops from the storm. “It was a very wet day so it was definitely weird to have a fire this large on such a wet day,” Kohler said. MADRID (AP) — The Spanish capital is trying to get back on its feet after a 50-year record snowfall that paralyzed large parts of central Spain over the weekend. It has now led to icy weather that is hampering the rollout of the much-needed vaccination against the coronavirus. With a sharp drop in temperatures on Monday and frost freezing much of the snow, which reached more than 50 centimeters (20 inches) in some urban areas, authorities are calling on people to avoid all but essential trips out of their homes. Nearly 700 roads remain affected throughout Spain, with winter tires or chains needed on roughly half of them, transit authority DGT said. In Madrid, authorities are calling on citizens to avoid using the few lanes that civil protection and military battalions, aided by snowplows and bulldozers, have managed to clear for ambulances and emergency vehicles. Much of the city’s main...

The Arctic is warming and changing rapidly, with record or near-record conditions documented across the region in 2020. That's according to an international team of 133 researchers from over a dozen countries who contributed to the 15th annual NOAA Arctic Report Card, released on Tuesday. The report is a comprehensive year-in-review of Arctic conditions — what NOAA calls vital signs — that characterize the health and stability of the Arctic ecosystem. They include variables like air temperature, sea ice and wildland fires. While climate conditions in this frigid part of the world typically change naturally at a glacial pace, in recent years the transformation has been occurring at a breakneck speed. In the a video accompanying the report, NOAA says there have been "alarming rates of change observed" since the 2006 Arctic Report Card, and adds, "the rate of change has been extraordinary." Dear MarketWatch, My husband and I are in our mid-50s and plan to retire in about 10 years. We live in northern New Jersey and want to move somewhere that has less extreme weather and lower taxes. We will have around $6,500-$7,500 a month in retirement, inclusive of Social Security (probably be around $3,000-$3,500 a month for both of us). We both can consult on the side if we want to make a few extra dollars, but that can be anywhere. We will have a house to sell and probably a new one to buy. The mortgage on the new one would be capped around $1,500, coming out of that $7,500. We would like to be within an hour of a casino and be in a gay-friendly area that has great options for shopping (a nice mall with good shops like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s) and medical care and is in a...
At first glance, the snow that's changed from white to bright pink in the Italian Alps seems like a stunning feat of nature. But scientists say it may actually be a warning sign of environmental trouble. Algae are to thank — or blame — for the pink layer that currently coats the Presena Glacier in northern Italy. Scientists say it's not an uncommon phenomenon in the spring and summer, but they warn that it could become a problem if it starts occurring more frequently.  Biagio Di Mauro, of the Institute of Polar Sciences (ISP) at Italy's National Research Council, traveled to the glacier last week to investigate the mysterious algae. While the phenomenon is well-documented, "there is relatively little scientific literature on this phenomenon, which has the direct effect of accelerating the melting of snow and ice," the institute said.  Get Breaking News Delivered to Your Inbox Photos from the trek...
