DALLAS, Texas -- The NBA said Wednesday the national anthem will be played in arenas "in keeping with longstanding league policy" after Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban revealed he had decided not to play it before his team's home games this season. The league's initial reaction to Cuban's decision was to say teams were free to conduct pregame activities as they wished with the unusual circumstances created by the coronavirus pandemic. Most NBA teams don't have fans at home games. But the NBA abruptly reversed course with Cuban's decision reverberating around the country, including a question put to White House press secretary Jen Psaki during her daily briefing. Athlete protests of social and racial injustice during the anthem became a flashpoint between then-President Donald Trump and various leagues during his administration.SEE RELATED: ABC13's 'Athletes & The Fight Against Racism' town hall"With NBA teams now in the process of welcoming fans back into...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to announce on Wednesday a Pentagon review of its strategy towards China, looking at key areas including intelligence, technology and the military footprint in the region, a U.S. official said. The review will be just one of several that the Pentagon is already carrying out, on everything from troops in the Middle East to its policy towards NATO. It comes as both countries are at loggerheads over issues from technology and human rights to Chinese military activities in the disputed South China Sea, with each accusing the other of deliberately provocative behavior. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a new 15-person task force would be created at the Pentagon to review the strategy and present its recommendations within four months. Under Biden's predecessor, the Pentagon made countering China it's top priority, something Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has signaled...

Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) discussed the Senate impeachment proceedings from the day before. Durbin said he heard his GOP colleagues express their “disappointment” in the Trump legal team. He added they “expected a spirited defense” of Trump, “and it didn’t happen.” “What have you heard since last night from any Republican senators? We heard directly from Senator Bill Cassidy, who changed his mind on at least the constitutionality of it. And he voted with five other Republican senators to move forward. What else have you heard from Republicans?” host John Berman asked. “Disappointment,” Durbin replied. “They really expected a spirited defense of the president, and it didn’t happen. … I was taking notes — I have a good seat, you know — and I’m right in front there, and I wanted to take notes to follow, and I just gave up on Mr. Castor. U.S. personal spending in 2021 is expected to grow at its fastest rate in over five years, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey released Monday. The rush could boost consumer discretionary stocks including Chipotle Mexican Grill, said Nancy Tengler, chief investment officer at Laffer Tengler Investments. "We've been pounding the table on where the consumer and digitization cross over, so we're grossly overweighted to consumer discretionary as a firm," Tengler told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Tuesday. She noted that her firm bought into Chipotle in the spring and added to its position after its most recent earnings report when the stock sold off. Disney made Tengler's No. 2 spot despite not technically being a consumer discretionary stock. She liked the...

It's expected to focus on five areas of COVID-19 mitigation in schools, rather than relying on vaccinating teachers as a precondition for reopening.  The mitigation practices include ensuring teachers and students wear masks, maintain proper social distancing and institute a good "hand hygiene" program with proper...

Illinois has cut its 2022 fiscal gap by $2.5 billion in an unexpected move as the state fared better than expected this year after the coronavirus pandemic hurt the economy across the country.  The cut will allow the state to start its shortfall for the year in July at $3 billion instead of $5.5 billion as was originally estimated, Illinois’s Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported.  This move was unexpected as Illinois has been struggling financially since before the pandemic even began. Many states and companies have been negatively affected by the pandemic since businesses had to close and adjust to new guidelines.  However, the announcement from the governor’s office said that the state’s “economy performed more strongly than expected,” so Pritzker was able to pay off a $700 million loan the state owed the Federal Reserve.  Illinois had to borrow from the Federal Reserve last year due to high interest...

U.S. Attorney John Durham will stay on for his apparently eternal investigation. A turnover of U.S. attorneys across the Justice Department is a traditional element of a new administration. In the past, the changeover hasn’t always been universal. Some attorneys have been recognized as good, nonpartisan prosecutors who have a firm handle on the issues in their district. Others have been asked to stay on to complete a complex, ongoing investigation. However, for any U.S. attorney heading up an office, the end of an administration generally marks the end of their time in that position. As CNN reports, for U.S. attorneys appointed by Donald Trump, this could be that last day. Notices are expected to start going out on Tuesday requesting that attorneys submit their resignation, clearing the way for President Joe Biden to appoint a new team. This doesn’t just put new people in the chairs, but opens the department for...
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Six years after a project switched the source of heat for municipal and other buildings in Montpelier from oil to wood chips, customers say it has worked fine but costs more than anticipated. The district heat system went online in 2014 with the goal of reducing energy costs and the city's use of fossil fuels, the Times Argus reported on Friday. But the anticipated savings from the project assumed a rise in oil prices, which have instead dropped. “It’s definitely been a mixed bag,” said William Fraser, city manager. Customers of district heating, which include churches, the police and fire departments, and several private buildings, are also paying back funds raised through a bond that financed the project, the newspaper reported. Adding customers could bring down costs for buildings already heated by the system, but a city official at the department of buildings told the newspaper...

The cast on the podium will be different, but structurally Trump's second impeachment trial will look much like his first On Monday evening, House impeachment managers, Senate leadership, and Donald Trump’s legal team reached agreement on the rules under which the impeachment trial will proceed. In many ways, the trial will look like the one that followed Trump’s first impeachment: Each side will have up to 16 hours over two days to present their case, there will be a period of debate in which senators can submit written questions to either side, then the Senate will vote on whether to hear from witnesses. That last vote will happen only if the House impeachment managers request witnesses, and at the moment it doesn’t appear this will be the case, as the crimes Trump committed were done in front of the nation, and every Senator and Representative present was witness to the...

The move is expected to spare two top prosecutors in Delaware and Connecticut overseeing two sensitive Trump-era investigations, CNN said https://cnn.it/3jwCyJ2, citing a senior Justice Department official. Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson, in a call on Monday night, asked Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, to remain in office, where he is overseeing the tax probe of President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden, according to the CNN report. John Durham, appointed as special counsel by former Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, will also continue his work, but he is expected to resign as U.S. attorney in Connecticut, the report added, citing the Justice official. By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial begins on Tuesday, a solemn proceeding that will force lawmakers to relive the violent events of Jan. 6 as House Democrats prosecute their case for “incitement of insurrection.” The nine Democratic impeachment managers for the House, which impeached Trump last month, argue that he alone was responsible for inciting the mob of supporters who broke into the U.S. Capitol and interrupted the presidential electoral count. Lawyers for Trump argue that the trial is unconstitutional and say the former president was exercising freedom of speech when he told his supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn his defeat. The arguments against conviction are expected to be persuasive with Senate Republicans, most of whom have signaled that they will vote to acquit. According to what was agreed on Monday between Senate leaders, Democrat Chuck Schumer and Republican Mitch McConnell, the first day will be dedicated to evaluating whether this impeachment is constitutional, something to which legislators will dedicate four hours of debate, followed of a vote on the subject. The Justice Department is reportedly expected to ask dozens of U.S. attorneys to resign on Tuesday, but the move will not disrupt the work of two top prosecutors conducting significant investigations overshadowing the Biden administration. A senior DOJ official told CNN that the request will be sent to 56 Senate-confirmed U.S. attorneys appointed by former President Donald Trump on Tuesday. Unclear is when the resignations would be expected to take effect. Such a request is commonplace with the entry of a new administration. President Biden has been in office for roughly two and a half weeks. The report said U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is conducting a criminal investigation into the Russia inquiry, is expected to resign. However, he was appointed special counsel in the final months of the Trump administration, and will continue his work even after leaving his post as the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut. President Joe Biden’s administration is expected to roll back deportations starting this week for illegal aliens who have been convicted of drunk driving, simple assault, and a number of drug crimes. The Post reports: Agents will no longer seek to deport immigrants for crimes such as driving under the influence and assault, and will focus instead on national security threats, recent border crossers and people completing prison and jail terms for aggravated felony convictions. BERLIN (AP) – Industrial production in Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, stagnated in December after seven consecutive months of gains, official data showed Monday. The figure from the Economy Ministry followed data on Friday that showed factory orders dropping nearly 1.9% in December compared with the previous month, nearly double the drop economists had expected. The numbers reinforce the impression that the economy could contract again in the current quarter after eking out minimal growth of 0.1% in last year’s fourth quarter. Germany embarked on a limited shutdown Nov. 2, closing restaurants, bars, sports and leisure facilities, then shut schools and nonessential shops on Dec. 16 after those measures failed to bring coronavirus infections down. Industrial activity has not been restricted. The toughened lockdown remains in place. Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country’s 16 state governors will discuss on Wednesday how to proceed after Feb. 14, when the measures are currently...
Here’s something nobody expected: The Chiefs do not have to replace any coordinators after a second straight Super Bowl appearance. For the third straight offseason, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy interviewed seemingly everywhere but wasn’t hired. He is expected to re-sign with the Chiefs since his contract expired after the Super Bowl. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo — expected to be one of the top second-chance candidates — didn’t gain the same interview traction as peers Todd Bowles (Buccaneers) and Leslie Frazier (Bills). Even special teams coordinator Dave Toub sometimes is mentioned as a future head coach. With extensions for Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones taken care of in recent months, the Chiefs can focus on refining an already loaded roster and getting the salary cap (projected to be $9 million over budget) in better shape. Here are three offseason questions they need to answer: 1. Does the offensive line...

In the North Berkshires snowfall may add up to 5 inches, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters are fairly certain about the predictions noting there is more than a 90 percent chance of snow on Tuesday....

Officials in Mexico say they expected a spike in mass migration in 2021 due to the impact of natural disasters, failed economies, and the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Natural disasters, economic turmoil, and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic during 2020 pointed to a spike in mass migration, Mexican officials said last week. That new wave of migration has begun and is expected to continue despite efforts to stop illegal crossings on Mexico’s southern border. Last week, the head of Mexico’s Human Rights Commission, Nashieli Ramirez Hernandez, revealed they had been monitoring conditions in Central and South American. They expected an increase in the migratory flow not in large caravans, but in smaller groups. The increase in migratory movement, according to Ramirez, is tied to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The commissioner also pointed to reports of increased activity along human trafficking routes and more operations...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Los Angeles-native Amanda Gorman, who went viral after after reading her poem at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, will be back in the spotlight. Gorman is expected to read another work at Super Bowl LV on Sunday. Her poem is expected to recognize three community heroes, including Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis, who is expected to be on the field, serving as an honorary captain during the pregame coin-toss. The other two honorees include nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin — all three of whom are being recognized for their contributions during the pandemic. The 22-year-old Gorman wants to recognize the honorees for their “tremendous impact during an unprecedented year.”
A Connecticut man has been charged in several alleged sexual assault cases, and police expect additional victims as the investigation continues. Akin Jamal Warner, age 25, of Windsor Locks, was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 3, for the second time while in custody at the Hartford Correctional Center, said Windsor Locks Lt. Paul Cherniack.  According to Cherniack, Windsor Locks police began on Sunday, Jan. 3, when a 17-year-old girl complained of a sexual assault. During the following investigation, which included assistance from the Winsdor Police Department and state police, detectives learned of three more sexual assaults involving Warner “with similar circumstances in each case," Cherniack said.  Detectives also learned Warner lived in Orange County, California last year and found that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office had two open sexual assault cases involving him, police said.  The investigation into those cases is ongoing. On Wednesday, Jan. 27, detectives obtained an arrest warrant, and...
Eric Bieniemy isn’t going anywhere, Chiefs kingdom. Eric Bieniemy was the hottest name in head-coaching candidates entering the 2020 NFL season. Seven head coaching jobs were available this offseason when the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator went into meetings. Once again, he was bypassed in favor of other names who were deemed more qualified. The interesting part of all this is Bieniemy’s contract with Kansas City. Kansas City will have a chance to run it back on offense with Bieniemy under the controls. That could be troubling for all coaches in the AFC come 2021. COMMACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Officials on Long Island are hoping this Super Bowl Sunday means more people in front of TVs, and much fewer on the roads as plow drivers work to clear snow. Ready or not, there’s a winter storm rerun on Super Bowl Sunday, adding more slush to already snowy sidewalks and front lawns. “It’s scaring me, just the thought of cleaning up the mess again,” said Suzanne Stringham from East Meadow. “Not looking forward to digging out my car,” another person said. Getty Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a turf toe injury in the AFC Divisional Round. After setting a new postseason career-high of 325 passing yards against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes put to rest a lot of the concern about his turf toe injury — at least in the short term. The 25-year-old superstar first suffered the injury early on in the AFC Divisional Round the week prior, playing through a noticeable limp before being forced into concussion protocol after an awkward tackle by Cleveland Browns linebacker Mack Wilson. While Mahomes has since cleared the head/neck injury, his ailing toe is going to require more attention this offseason. According to a new report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Sunday morning, Mahomes will likely have surgery to repair his ailing toe after visiting with a foot specialist following the...

What happened with the iPhone 12 Mini is one more example that you can never expect to fully know how the market will react before a new product. And it is that since the first rumors arrived about this new version, the most basic, of the new generation of Apple’s smartphone, everything indicated that it would surely be the best-selling version of it. Why? As simple as it is evident: its price is the cheapest option to have an iPhone 12. Once made official in the October presentation, the existence of the iPhone 12 Mini was confirmed, and after being able to test it, we confirmed that it was a great option for many users. And not because it is the cheapest iPhone 12 (which is also), but because its features were not diminished compared to its older brother (except for its battery, of course), and its smaller size, which...

President Biden's foot that was injured in November while he was playing with his dog has healed, his physician said in a statement. "The President received routine follow up x-rays today. Both small fractures of his foot are completely healed," Dr. Kevin O’Connor said after a visit to Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists on Saturday. "This injury has healed as expected, and he will return to his usual exercise regimen," said O'Connor, who has been Biden's primary care doctor since 2009. In an earlier statement, O'Connor said the appointment was "a regularly scheduled 10 week post-injury weight-bearing X-ray." Biden is spending the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, with his family and watching the Super Bowl. Biden said he fractured his foot while playing with one of his German Shepherds, Major, over the Thanksgiving holiday. He had turned 78 shortly before. At the time, Biden's doctor said...
