Janet Yellen cleared her final hurdle Monday on her historic path to secretary of the Treasury Department, gaining overwhelming Senate confirmation for the position. The 84-15 vote made Yellen the first female to the lead the department, a feat she matched as chair of the Federal Reserve. After a mostly cordial hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, where she gained unanimous approval, Yellen was thought to be almost a sure thing for confirmation. However, the vote was delayed a few days as the upper chamber makes its way through the first week of President Joe Biden's administration. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., urged his colleagues prior to the vote 841to approve what amounted to a fifth confirmation for Yellen to a government leadership role. "Tonight, the Senate can deliver an especially important economic judgment: Confirm Janet Yellen a fifth time and know that she will work with every single one...

Former Surgeon General Jerome Adams groaned over “different standards” as he defended Dr. Deborah Birx over her decision to stay with the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force. Birx resigned from the coronavirus task force last week after serving as one of its most visible faces when Donald Trump was president. Now that the former president is out of office, Birx seems to be rehabilitating her public image somewhat by addressing the criticisms she faced working with Trump as she did. In an interview with CBS’ Margaret Brennan, Birx said she “always” thought about quitting the task force and that she was constantly asked herself questions about what could she do. At the same time, Trump operated off of different Covid data from her own. By contrast, Dr. Anthony Fauci said he “never” considered resigning because “I felt that if I stepped down, that would leave a void. Someone’s got...

Pray for movie theaters. “The Marksman,” a Liam Neeson thriller from Open Road, held onto first place for the second weekend in a row, grossing just over $2 million. The film has grossed $6.1 million after 10 days of release. That performance allows the movie to retain its box office crown, but that kind of distinction isn’t worth what it was in pre-pandemic times, particularly with movie theaters closed indefinitely in major markets like New York City and Los Angeles. Indeed, the exhibition landscape is a wasteland and with the vaccine rollout hampered by a lack of, you know, vaccines, help could be in short supply. There’s little that portends a rapid recovery for a sector of the economy that’s been decimated by the public health crisis. Last week, MGM yielded to the inevitable and pushed the release of its James Bond sequel, “No Time to Die,” from April to...

The professor described Inauguration Day as “a moment of tremendous joy” but also “trepidation,” underscoring the current state of the nation....

Contrary to what his more than ten years and 23 films might suggest, The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was born almost accidentally. The studio did not hold the film rights to its most iconic print characters, leading to it turning to heroes less known to the general public. This apparent weakness became one of the franchise’s greatest strengths. Not only because the characters in question made up the core of the Avengers, but because it allowed him to grow horizontally in the absence of a central axis in the story, unlike for example the X-Men who could never completely do without Wolverine. This treatment has allowed him to adjust without major complications to the infinity of variants that have arisen along the way., like the abrupt inclusion of Spider-Man. However, it has also facilitated the maximum use of its different characters when the bases of the plot require it. Such...

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Supreme court has overturned a man’s bank robbery conviction because of a prosecutor’s reference to a classic horror movie. During closing arguments in the case against Damon Williams, the prosecutor showed jurors a photo from the movie “The Shining” depicting a character played by Jack Nicholson telling his terrified wife and son, “Here’s Johnny!” moments after breaking through a door with an axe. The reference was meant to illustrate that actions can speak louder than words, and to support the prosecutor’s contention that Williams should be convicted of a more serious offense even though no threatening words were spoken to the bank teller in Camden County in 2014. The jury convicted Williams of second-degree robbery, which requires the use of force or the threat of force, rather than the less serious crime of third-degree theft. Prosecutors argued that Williams’ conduct before and after...

Liam Neeson is proving to be the king of the North American box office throughout the pandemic. The actor’s previous movie "Honest Thief" shot to the top of the box office in October amid a slew of theater closures that prompted several movie studios to postpone their major blockbuster releases until at least 2021. Now, the 68-year-old action star can boast a second film at the top of the charts, the action thriller "The Marksman."  According to Variety, the film debuted at No. 1 with $3.2 million in ticket sales and is expected to close out the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with $3.7 million across 1,975 locations. Beyond that, other messages and on-the-record interviews from one of his exes allege that Hammer was also, at the very least, mentally and emotionally abusive. The actor brushed the claims off as “bullshit” in a broad statement announcing his departure from the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Shotgun Wedding. 'This is not goodbye,' she wrote in an op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle. 'As I resign from the Senate, I am preparing to take an oath that would have me preside over it.' She noted she was prepared to cast tie-breaking votes in the chamber, which will be a 50 Democrat, 50 Republican split, but added she hoped senators would find 'common ground.' 'Since our nation's founding, only 268 tie-breaking votes have been cast by a Vice President. I intend to work tirelessly as your Vice President, including, if necessary, fulfilling this Constitutional duty. At the same time, it is my hope that rather than come to the point of a tie, the Senate will instead find common ground and do the work of the...

'Back to the shower, for one simple reason, when washing you're not going to bend forward to wash your legs and headbutt the wall,' wrote one, while a second admitted: 'I am SHOCKED. I just assumed EVERYONE faced the water.  'Back to the shower is for hangover recovery only, usually breathing deeply and steadying yourself against the wall, praying you’re not pushing sick down the plug hole before the time’s...
