By STAN CHOE and ALEX VEIGA, AP Business Writers NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street's GameStop saga can't stop. At the very least, it won't stop. After weeks of going dormant, shares of GameStop have suddenly shot higher again, jumping 75% in the last hour of trading Wednesday and another 60% so far Thursday. It's reminiscent of the shocking 1,625% surge for GameStop in January, when bands of smaller and novice investors communicating on Reddit and other social media helped launch the struggling video game retailer's stock. That initial supernova heightened questions about whether the broader market was in a bubble and whether a new generation of traders should be able to take full advantage of the free trades available on their phones. Global markets swooned momentarily; Congress held a hearing. No clear reason seems to be behind this most recent move, leaving market observers to grasp at what little...

Getty UFC superstar Nate Diaz is planning to compete in the coming months and No. 1 ranked welterweight contender Colby Covington is confident he won’t be the opponent. Diaz recently challenged No. 1 ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier and No. 3 ranked lightweight Charles Oliveira to a scrap, but it doesn’t appear those fights will happen in the near future. Oliveira declined Diaz’s challenge as he wants to fight for the championship. Although Poirier has shown interest in fighting Diaz, according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani the UFC is looking to book Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 3 in the summer. Diaz has made it clear he wants to fight someone who is coming off a victory and hopes to compete at welterweight or at a 165-pound catchweight. During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Covington was asked about fighting Diaz. Covington is coming off a dominant victory over former 170-pound...
By JEFFREY COLLINS, Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina economists decided Friday to make no changes to 3-month-old revenue estimates because COVID-19 is still causing so much uncertainty in the economy. Revenues in South Carolina have grown nearly 5% since the fiscal year started in July, while official estimates predicted a 3.5% decline. That's good news on its face, said state Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office Executive Director Frank Rainwater. But Rainwater said behind that number are a lot of questions. The chief one is how much of that surge in revenues is thanks to federal stimulus money. Other unknowns include whether the lower-than-predicted unemployment rate is as rosy as it appears or will have to be adjusted, and whether people will continue to spend more than typically anticipated in a recession. “We want to be cautious. We don’t want to be careless in this uncertain time,” Rainwater...
SAN FRANCISCO —  The San Francisco Bay Area, a destination for foodies and wine drinkers across California and abroad, is resuming outdoor dining, even as the pandemic continues to threaten the region. The state’s relaxation of stay-at-home orders could provide a big boost to the region’s tourism industry, with some caveats. Like much of California, the Bay Area remains a tapestry of limits on social gatherings, a product of individual counties setting their own rules based on state guidelines, which can be hard for people outside the region and even inside to follow. Though the area’s county health officials have been more unified than their counterparts in Southern California, the re-openings announced Monday could change depending on infection rates caused by new strains of the virus. Travelers will still face quarantine requirements when entering San Francisco and Santa Clara counties, officials there said. But those loosely enforced rules...

Bay Area professional sports franchises are eager to see their stadiums turn into mass COVID-19 vaccination sites, but neither team nor local officials seem to know if and when this will happen. Spokespeople for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s, San Jose Sharks and San Jose Earthquakes have all confirmed their organizations have been in contact with government officials and local healthcare providers about using stadiums as vaccination centers. San Francisco 49ers CEO Al Guido even took to social media to offer up Levi’s Stadium so Santa Clara County residents can get vaccinated. During a press conference Wednesday, Santa Clara County Counsel James Williams said the county still hasn’t received enough vaccines to inoculate all local healthcare workers. “We don’t know how much vaccine will be coming to the county,” Williams said. “And that’s really a challenge.” Related Articles 2020 sets another global temperature record...
Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players the NBA has ever seen. He was one of the most competitive players on the court besides standing out as the most talented, as he always carried the hunger to win. Four-time NBA champion and former Detroit Pistons player John Salley recently had an interview with Vlad TV. In one part of the interview, Salley spoke about why was MJ so intense on the floor. He said, “I learned this about Michael. No one knows the pressure Michael Jordan is under. Because we watch him on court and you go ‘Ahh’ but you don’t know the pressure he is under.” “The media, trying to be a family man saving the NBA from destruction, making it a worldwide business. It was already on, but Michael made it what it is. When you’re a messiah, no one knows the pressure of the messiah. The...
When millions of Washingtonians are immunized with a COVID-19 vaccine, countless survivors of the disease will still be left wondering if they will ever feel well. Judy Schaefer became one of more than 240,000 Washingtonians to contract COVID-19 this year and like countless others, she is wondering how long the virus effects last. It was on July 17 that her test results came back positive, just five days after her fiancé, a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, came down with the virus along with several coworkers. A retired federal employee, Schaefer, 56, was an avid hiker before contracting the virus. She enjoyed staying active with her fiancé, a marathon runner. Now she says it’s a daily struggle just to walk down the street. “It's a good day if I get out and walk my dog, but most of the time I'm just too tired,”...

Roger Federer is one of the most influential tennis player in history. We can attribute his enormous success to the fantastic support team that he has. But one person who gets overlooked is his wife, Mirka Federer. Mirka was a former player, and it isn’t surprising that she not only handles her husband’s business interests but also his finesse on the tennis court. Federer’s former coach Paul Annacone recently spoke about Mirka’s role in Federer’s career. Paul Annacone on first meeting Roger Federer and his team In a recent interview with the ‘Tennis with an Accent’ podcast, Paul spoke about the important members of Federer’s team and how Federer’s wife Mirka Federer and long time coach Severin Luthi helped him understand Roger’s game. Right now, every journalist in America is not just walking a tightrope, but definitely swaying from side to side. When the man currently occupying the White House is openly and without question attempting to conduct a coup that would crush democracy and turn the nation into a single party dictatorship, how can that not be treated as the most serious threat in America’s history? On the other hand, when the team supposedly leading this overthrow is delivering their manifesto from the parking lot of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, how can it not be just … hilarious? A bug-eyed Rudy Giuliani jabbing his finger into the sky as hair dye drips to his chin is objectively ridiculous. Sidney Powell claiming that Donald Trump’s downfall was plotted out in a meeting with a long-dead Venezuelan dictator is ridiculous. Many wanted, even demanded, that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) be abolished. (CNN)A 6-year-old afraid to go outside. A mom scared to send her children back to school, then thrilled at how they've thrived. A teacher worried she'll be ordered back to the classroom and become some kind of test subject. These are some of the stressed stories of the pandemic-hit school year so far -- but it's impossible to know how widespread the experiences are because there is no national tracking of what happens when children and staff return to schools. And without that tracking, health and education experts say, there's no way to come up with best practices to restart schools, educate children most effectively and open up their parents to commit to their work lives. "Unfortunately, some of our knowledge is really just derived from anecdote," said Dr. Susan Coffin, professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "We don't have any good strategies to systematically collect...
CLAIM: During an argument over the number of coronavirus deaths and cases in the first presidential debate on Tuesday night, President Donald Trump told Joe Biden, “You don’t know how many people really died in China or Russia” because “they don’t give a straight count.” VERDICT: Outside analysts have strongly questioned the accuracy of coronavirus statistics reported by authoritarian regimes like China, Russia, and Iran as these countries are extremely resistant to allowing outside investigators to verify their information. The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) published a report in April that argued China’s claimed totals of coronavirus infections and deaths were mathematically impossible, since they assumed near-zero infections across the country before the epicenter of the outbreak, the city of Wuhan, was placed under quarantine. AEI pointed out that China simply refuses to release a great deal of the data necessary to track the spread of the virus beyond Wuhan and...

The impacted species include blackbirds, flycatchers, sparrows, swallows, warblers and the western wood pewee. President Trump—long-time antagonist of environmental regulations and big-time proponent of oil and gas development—announced a decade-long ban on offshore drilling off the coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. “This protects your beautiful Gulf and your beautiful ocean, and it will for a long time to come,” Trump said in a speech in Jupiter touting his environmental record. He signed a presidential memorandum extending a moratorium on leasing drilling rights off Florida’s Gulf Coast and expanded that ban to a portion of the Atlantic Ocean that stretches between Florida and South Carolina. What news should people see when they come to Facebook? In the old days, your answer might have been “whatever they want to see,” or even “who cares?” But as Facebook’s dominance grew, and it became one of the most important arbiters of attention in the world, the question grew more pressing. If a country where the median voter leans to the political left has a News Feed occupied by links from the far right, that could cause concern. If right-wing and even openly fascist politicians began to take over countries around the world, that kind of disconnect between an electorate and one of their primary news sources might come under even stricter scrutiny. A nice thing about Facebook is that the company makes a tool that lets you see what links are popular there in real time. Or rather, it bought one, in November 2016. It’s called...

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) Leading Off ● Iowa: With no advance notice, Republican legislators in Iowa passed a budget bill just before adjourning that included an expansion of the state's voter ID requirement, violating a compromise that the GOP had reached with Democrats to remove proposed voting restrictions from the final bill. The new bill adds an ID requirement for voters who go to their county government offices to vote early in-person. The bill also requires absentee ballot applications to include the voter's "voter ID PIN," a state-issued four-digit number that few voters are aware of. Under current law, county officials can verify voter identities using other information on their applications or the state's registration database, but this bill would disallow that. Instead, officials would have to contact the voter individually to confirm their identity, which could cause significant delays in processing absentee requests and lead to voters not...
