WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday seemed inclined to expand when officers can enter a suspect’s home without a warrant. The court has previously said that an officer in “hot pursuit” of a suspect believed to have committed a felony crime can enter the person’s home without a warrant if the person goes inside. On Wednesday, the court was debating whether the same is true if the officer is pursuing the person over a misdemeanor. The case is important both to law enforcement and to groups concerned about privacy. Several justices, both liberal and conservative, suggested that making a distinction between felony and misdemeanor cases would be difficult and problematic. “The problem with trying to separate misdemeanor and felony is that different states have different rules and different crimes that count as misdemeanors,” Justice Stephen Breyer said during arguments the justices heard by phone because of the...
Rick Holmstrom, “See That Light” (LuEllie Records) Mask up, plug in and rock out to a stripped-down sound. That’s the recipe for success on “See That Light,” the new solo album by Rick Holmstrom, who has been Mavis Staples’ guitarist and bandleader for the past 13 years. When the pandemic wiped out Staples’ 2020 tour schedule, Holmstrom regrouped — so to speak — and assembled a power trio in a studio near his home in Venice, California. The happy result is a 12-song set built on garage band basics that showcases Holmstrom’s enormous guitar vocabulary. Not that he’s a showboat — his solos aren’t so much high-flying as rooted, specifically in the blues and Chuck Berry, with lots of vibrato, twang and reverb. Some of Holmstrom’s most impressive, inventive playing is as a rhythm guitarist in support of his singing. Equally appealing is the work of Steve Mugalian...

They’ve never signed on to Facebook. They don’t know what any of these things are,” she said. Texas next week is set to receive 332,850 doses, about 800 fewer than this week. The Dallas area, though, could see an increase in its allotment. The city announced Friday the state had agreed to send it 5,000 doses to begin operating its own vaccination hub at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. It used the...
Fox News contributor Juan Williams appeared to blame former President Donald Trump for the debacle that left National Guard troops stranded in a parking garage. Williams joined Friday’s broadcast of “The Five” to discuss the photos of soldiers camped out in a parking garage after being told to vacate the Capitol — photos that sparked outrage among Americans on both sides of the political aisle. (RELATED: Juan Williams Condemns Capitol Riot, Says There Is ‘No Moral Equivalence’ Between Targeting Capitol And Trageting Private Property) WATCH: Williams began by saying that everyone was thankful that the National Guard had been standing by to help. “Their presence was a great thing for America during the inauguration, and they deserve to be treated with all the dignity in the world.” “Absolutely,” Sandra Smith agreed. “Worth pointing out, though, some veterans and current soldiers are pointing out pretty quickly, ‘Don’t feel bad, they...
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – North Texas congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, Republican of the 24th congressional district, is among the lawmakers calling for an investigation after thousands of National Guard Members protecting the U.S. Capitol were ordered to take their rest breaks from the cold in a nearby parking garage. Photos show troops laying on the concrete. During a news conference in Fort Worth Friday morning, Van Duyne said, “I’m looking for an investigation to find out why they were treated the way that they were. I don’t think there’s an excuse for it.” She’s not alone. Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted Thursday night, “I have instructed General Norris to order the return of the Texas National Guard to our state.” The governor’s press secretary, Renae Eze, issued a statement late Friday afternoon. “The Lone Star State sent 1,345 Texas National Guard to Washington, DC to bolster security efforts for the presidential...
Washington (CNN)A series of miscommunications around an unprecedented security situation left National Guard troops searching for an adequate rest area Thursday night when they were moved from the Capitol into a nearby parking garage.Guard members ended up having to spend several hours Thursday night resting on the concrete in the parking garage before the mistake was fixed and they were moved back to the Capitol. The exact chain of events that led to the Guard members moving to the garage is unclear, and by Friday afternoon a series of conflicting explanations and finger pointing only added to the confusion about why the troops were given the impression they were no longer welcome in the Capitol even as their job of protecting it is ongoing. The resulting confusion and finger-pointing was impressive even for Washington. The National Guard was quick to blame Capitol Police as the authority that directed their troops...
A small number of National Guard troops are still resting in parking garages in the U.S. Capitol complex following Thursday evening's controversy, and many had been resting in the parking garages for days before. On Thursday evening, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressed outrage over thousands of troops abruptly being told to leave an indoor area in the Capitol and go to a parking garage, with some Republicans and conservatives blaming Democratic leadership or President Biden for forcing troops to sleep in a parking garage. While Thursday's issue caused chaotic logistics challenges due to the large number of troops and abruptness of the order, it was not the first time that those in Washington, D.C., guarding the Capitol used a parking garage as a rest space. Guard troops from two states, granted anonymity in order to speak to the press without authorization, told the Washington...
Jill Biden, in her first solo outing as first lady, stopped on Capitol Hill to thank National Guard members for their service during her husband's inauguration. She noted the Biden's were a National Guard family, invoking the memory of the late Beau Biden, who served in the Delaware National Guard. 'The National Guard will always hold a special place in the hearts of all the Bidens,' she said.  Beau Biden served in Iraq in 2008 and received a visit from his father, then Vice President Joe Biden, at Camp Victory in 2009. Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015.  Jill Biden carried a basket filled with chocolate-chip cookies for the service members, who had to spend part of Thursday's cold night in a garage after being told they could not take their breaks in the Capitol. The report of the guards' treatment caused outrage among lawmakers and the service...
Gov. Greg Abbott (R) ordered the return of the Texas National Guard late Thursday evening after troops were forced to evacuate the Capitol building grounds over an alleged mask complaint from a Democrat congressman. “I have instructed General Norris to order the return of the Texas National Guard to our state,” Abbott announced Thursday. The announcement followed pictures and videos showing troops hanging out in a parking garage — something that reportedly occurred after Democrat Rep. Bill Keating (D-MA) issued a complaint about a maskless National Guardsman in a cafe in the building. As Breitbart News reported: After Keating commented out loud that masks were required to be worn at all times in a federal building, the National Guard member responded, “I appreciate my freedom,” according to the source. National Guard commanders are now looking for the National Guard member, according to the source. Breitbart News reviewed communications by National...
Spencer Platt/Getty Images Capitol Police chief Yogananda Pittman on Friday denied participating in the decision that confined National Guard troops to a parking garage. “I want to assure everyone that, with the exception of specific times on Inauguration Day itself while the swearing-in ceremonies were underway, the United States Capitol Police did not instruct the National Guard to vacate the Capitol Building facilities,” Pittman said in a statement provided to WTOP. “And on Inauguration Day, the Guard was notified and encouraged to reoccupy the spaces in the Capitol and CVC at 2 p.m.” National Guard troops have been in Washington, D.C. since unrest unrest broke out on Jan. 6. Outrage erupted on Thursday when troops were relocated to the Thurgood Marshall Judicial Center garage near the Capitol. Guard Spokesman Maj. Matt Murphy attributed the decision to Capitol police, saying a statement, “As Congress is in session and increased foot traffic...
(CNN) — Members of the National Guard have been allowed back into the Capitol Complex after a slate of lawmakers voiced their outrage at guardsmen being banished to a parking garage as a rest area, a guardsman told CNN. The Guard will now be allowed to rest in the US Capitol Visitor Center, the guardsman said. The change comes after thousands of National Guardsmen were moved to a parking garage after they were told they could no longer use space within the US Capitol Complex, including areas like the cafeteria of a Senate office building, as a rest area, multiple Guardsmen told CNN. Prior to Thursday morning, several areas throughout the Capitol Complex were designated as authorized rest areas where members of the Guard could take breaks from their shifts protecting the Capitol. By Thursday morning, all those areas had been cleared out and their designations removed, the Guardsmen said. “We honestly...
In a Friday column for Breitbart, columnist John Nolte argued that President Joe Biden treated American troops in a way that violated the Geneva Conventions Act of 1964 by approving the transfer of thousands of National Guardsmen into a nearby parking garage before they were ultimately let back into the U.S. Capitol. “The Geneva Conventions expressly forbid forcing prisoners of war from sleeping on concrete, or in parking garages,” he wrote. “In other words, His Fraudulency Joe Biden, America’s feeble commander-in-chief, has already treated his own troops in a way that violates the Geneva Conventions. Technically, it’s not a violation because the Geneva Conventions directly relate to prisoners of war.” As reported by Politico, the troops were forced into the parking space where they had to sleep on the ground. The decision received backlash from top lawmakers from both parties, some of whom offered to provide their offices as rest...
Meghan McCain said “shame on all our lawmakers” over the treatment of National Guard troops after reports surfaced that 5,000 of them were “sleeping in a garage.” “Absolute shame on all our lawmakers for allowing this!” the co-host of “The View” tweeted Friday, along with a tweet and link to an article in Politico that read, “‘We feel incredibly betrayed’: Thousands of Guardsmen forced to vacate Capitol.” (RELATED: Ivanka Trump Calls Out Rioters, Says ‘The Violence Must Stop Immediately’) “5,000 troops, one bathroom, sleeping in a garage in 38 degree weather!” she added. “This is how we treat those who sacrifice and protect us in the armed forces at our nations Capitol?!” Absolute shame on all our lawmakers for allowing this! 5,000 troops, one bathroom, sleeping in a garage in 38 degree weather! This is how we treat those who sacrifice and protect us in the armed forces at our...
House and Senate Democratic leaders were not involved in a decision to move National Guard troops into a parking garage. Instead, the move happened as a result of “a breakdown in communication” between the Guard and the Capitol Police, those familiar with the matter told the Washington Examiner. “The guardsmen were moved over to the garage by a Capitol Police officer, and it didn’t go through the chain of command for either the Capitol Police or the National Guard,” a source familiar with the matter told the Washington Examiner. Republicans were quick to blame the debacle on top Democrats, who control both chambers of Congress. “Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi and Majority Leader [Chuck] Schumer — why are American troops who are tasked with keeping security at the Capitol being forced to sleep in a parking lot?” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, tweeted on Thursday. “They deserve to...
National Guard troops protecting the Capitol were sent to stay in a nearby parking garage, sparking outrage on Friday morning from Republicans and Democrats in Congress. Capitol Police told thousands of troops to move to the parking garage from the Capitol complex, where they were stationed after unrest broke out in the city in Jan. 6. Guard Spokesman Maj. Matt Murphy refused to comment on the specific sequence of events leading up to the development. “As Congress is in session and increased foot traffic and business is being conducted, Capitol Police asked the troops to move their rest area,” Murphy said in a statement. “They were temporarily relocated to the Thurgood Marshall Judicial Center garage with heat and restroom facilities.” According to a report by Breitbart’s Kristina Wong, the move came after Rep. Will Keating (D-MA) complained about a Guardsman not wearing a face mask in a Dunkin Donuts in the Capitol...
Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) offered his office to National Guardsmen late Thursday evening after members were forced to leave the Capitol grounds because of a prior complaint from a Democrat congressman, who allegedly took issue after spotting a maskless Guardsman in a cafe earlier in the day. “To any members of the National Guard protecting our Capitol — if you need a warm place to rest and recharge, my office is open to you,” Gonzales said late Thursday as pictures began to emerge on social media showing soldiers sleeping in a parking garage as D.C. temperatures dipped into the 40s. “Mi casa es su casa. Beer & lunch meat are in the fridge, help yourself,” he added: To any members of the National Guard protecting our Capitol — if you need a warm place to rest and recharge, my office is open to you. Mi casa es su casa....
