During the second season of the 1970s TV series Wonder Woman, there is a scene in which our heroine, to prevent two baddies making an airborne getaway, jumps onto their moving helicopter, her long, coiffed curls billowing behind her. Amazingly, the feat was performed not by a stuntwoman but by the star of the show, Lynda Carter, who not only managed to hang on to the helicopter without safety equipment but somehow remain contained in her famously skimpy, low-cut boob tube and shorts. Second-generation Wonder Woman fans may scoff at YouTube clips of the original series, having sampled the new feminist film version, Wonder Woman 1984. But maybe they need reminding that Lynda Carter was the real deal, in an age when women in TV action series often seemed to be there just to serve drinks and have their bottoms pinched. ‘I loved leaping on the helicopter and I loved...

The compelling true-crime documentary series, with a cast of bizarre real-life personalities and sinister plot twists became a cultural phenomenon that had viewers on both sides of the Atlantic in its thrall. The hero or villain, depending on your point of view, was the undeniably engaging Joe Exotic — the gay, blond-mulleted, tattooed and pierced, many-times married, occasional meth-snorting owner of an exotic animal park in Oklahoma. Carole, the heroine or villainess depending on your point of view, was his nemesis. The self-styled conservationist and ‘big cat’ activist had been campaigning for years to stop the breeding of tigers and lions...

Even the most world-altering of years will get winnowed down in time, eventually condensed to a string of bullet points in a skimmed-over textbook. But if you survived 2020, certain fragments will surely live on in your head, permanently etched into place. I asked readers to share their most indelible memories of the year. Taken together, the responses formed a kind of kaleidoscopic year in review. All of the era-defining moments were there, but refracted through individual lives. In the first month of the year, a young mother in Los Angeles made dinner in her apartment kitchen. NPR played as she cooked, just background noise, really. Until it cut through. The story was about a city whose name few of us had known a few weeks prior, under siege from a novel virus. The woman distinctly remembers feeling — right then, in the moment — like it...
(CNN)In a year of despair and a world full of hate, one fast food manager is doing what she can to spread a message of love.April DiDonna told a customer that she loved him after he ordered at the Wendy's drive-thru where she works in Oak Harbor, Washington. Three months later, she's told thousands of people "I love you.""To know that the little three words could mean so much to so many people, it's overwhelming my heart with so much more love," DiDonna told CNN. "I truly believe that if we just love each other, the world would be better."The love routine kept going and DiDonna started tallying how many people have said "I love you" back. About 2,700 customers have reciprocated the message since she began counting on October 3, as of Friday before her shift. Each time a customer completes an order, the assistant manager sprinkles in her love...
(CNN)A group of three judges on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that a lower court judge was wrong when he vacated an execution date for Lisa Montgomery, the only woman on federal death row.The order says the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Michael Carvajal, was acting under the "governing regulation," which allowed him to reschedule the execution because the original execution date had not passed.Montgomery's execution had been scheduled for December 8, but a judge postponed it after her attorneys said they were diagnosed with Covid-19 after flying from Texas to visit with Montgomery at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. On November 23, Carvajal rescheduled Montgomery's execution for January 12 and because he set it at that date, the order said he was acting under the law, clearing the way for her execution later this month. Montgomery's attorney, Meaghan VerGow, said in...
ALHAMBRA, Calif. (KABC) -- 28-year-old Sasha Renee Perez made history when she was sworn in as the new mayor of Alhambra in December."I am the first of many things...I'm the first LGBTQ identifying person to be a part of the council, I am bisexual," said Mayor Perez. "And on top of that I am the first renters as well. So I'm a renter here in the City of Alhambra."The Alhambra native won the city council race in the November election. Because of the mayor rotation, Mayor Perez was sworn in as mayor and the council on the same day."I didn't realize when I was elected, as well, that I'd also be making San Gabriel Valley history by being the youngest woman to serve as mayor in the San Gabriel Valley," said Mayor Perez.Mayor Perez said her top priority at the moment is to protect and keep the residents of Alhambra...

The only woman on federal death row was set to be executed by lethal injection on Jan. 12, but Lisa Montgomery, 52, got a brief reprieve when, on Christmas Eve, a federal court pushed the date back. The court claimed the January date violated federal regulations that establish procedures for carrying out capital punishment Kelley Henry, one of the convicted killer’s attorneys, told Fox News she contracted the coronavirus in November when visiting Montgomery behind bars, setting back the preparation required to argue her last-minute clemency case. The legal team argues Montgomery suffers from a mental illness induced by a childhood of rampant rape and abuse. "I have only been able to speak with [Lisa] on the phone [since contracting COVID-19]. Her illness is such that it waxes and wanes, and she is trying the best she can," Henry, a Nashville public defender who has taken on Montgomery's case along with Amy Harwell, told Fox...

The NYPD has released new surveillance footage of the woman dubbed 'SoHo Karen' tackling the 14-year-old son of a black musician to the ground in a New York City hotel while accusing him of stealing her phone. The video, shared on social media Wednesday night by NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison, shows the woman suddenly run at Keyon Harrold Jr. and grab him by the waist in the Arlo Hotel on Saturday. Its release comes just hours after the 22-year-old woman gave a rambling interview to CNN where she denied racially profiling the boy and claimed it was her who was assaulted in the dispute.  The boy's father, Grammy-winning African American jazz artist Keyon Harrold, had previously posted separate footage filmed on his smartphone on Instagram. It showed the woman pushing and grabbing at the father and son, allegedly even scratching Keyon Sr's hands as she attempted to snatch...

Alexandria’s temporarily reborn Landmark Mall plays an early starring role in “Wonder Woman 1984,” as Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman makes easy work of a bunch of terribly dressed and coiffed baddies who had just robbed a store there. Among the many ways our superhero handles the villains: She effortlessly launches one through a giant drum emblazoned with the familiar slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers.” That was no accident. It was a 7-foot-tall product placement for the commonwealth of Virginia’s now 51-year-old tourism campaign — the longest-running in the United States.  “Having millions of audience members now see the iconic ‘Virginia is for Lovers’ logo up on both the large and small screens provides immeasurable brand visibility that will have a positive effect for years to come,” Andy Edmunds, director of the Virginia Film Office, said in a statement. And now the prop is going on display in Old Town, as...

Patrick Semansky – Pool /Getty Images SEOUL—The star of the younger sister of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has risen so fast and high in the country’s ruling firmament in 2020 as to make her appear as a stand-in for big brother if not his rival for power. At 32, four years younger than Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong has made her presence known through shockingly tough statements that he had to have endorsed but she clearly wrote and recommended. Undoubtedly her most famous—and most effective—blast was her denunciation in June of North Korean defectors for firing off balloons from South Korea laden with leaflets criticizing the North Korean regime. Kim Jong Un’s Little Sister Is Back as North Korea’s Top Attack Dog They were “human scum hardly worth their value as human beings,” “little short of wild animals who betrayed their own homeland,” she raged. It was...
