A spear fisherman has captured the horrifying moment a hammerhead shark charged at him while diving off the coast of far north Queensland. Dion Creek captured incredible footage of the six-foot long shark lunging at him at Magpie Reef in Princess Charlotte Bay on the Cape York Peninsula on Thursday. The Coen man was alone in the water diving for crayfish when the shark ambushed him on the reef. 'I was about to adjust the camera I just caught the shark coming out the corner of my eye,' he told 9News. These days, most of us tend to use our smartphone cameras for our full-time photographing needs rather than buy a separate product. After all, even lower-end cameras such as Google’s Pixel 4A or Apple’s iPhone SE both boast cameras that are as good as, if not better than, many of their more expensive peers. So why bother with a regular camera? Well, possibly because some people simply like having a separate camera. Some cameras, such as the GoPro, allow you to take photos in circumstances too rough for a phone, while others offer more special features. If you’re really serious about your photography, however, you’re going to be spending upward of $1,500 or more — way more — and that’s something that isn’t in everyone’s budget. What follows are reviews we’ve done of cameras costing about $500 or less. These may not be the high-end devices, but they will provide...
ESCALON (CBS13) — A man accused of placing a camera in front of a woman’s bathroom was arrested after accidentally recording himself. Escalon police say Justin Johnson stole a GoPro, a gun and a Petcube camera from a home on Sunday. The stolen GoPro was found outside the bathroom window a few days later. When officers reviewed the footage, they saw the alleged thief wearing “distinct articles of clothing.” Officers identified Johnson as the suspect and with a search warrant, located the stolen Petcube camera from his residence. He was arrested and booked in the San Joaquin County Jail. Johnson faces charges of burglary, peeping and petty theft. He is being held on $160,000 bail.
GOPRO's iconic outdoor action camera has had an update, and the GoPro Hero9 is now available. It has better specs and is pricier than its predecessor, but you can still get a deal. 2You can save £100 on the GoPro Hero9 While the GoPro Hero9 is only currently available direct from GoPro's store, the company is offering a deal for fans to get some added value. Priced at a hefty £429.99, the Hero9 offers a lot of tech for your cash, but is still a sizeable investment. Luckily, you can save £100 on the regular price with the GoPro Hero9 + Subscription offer - priced at £329.98. The combination includes a GoPro Hero 9, a 32GB SD card, plus a one-year GoPro subscription featuring: unlimited cloud storage, total camera replacement, and up to 50 per cent off on GoPro kit. This is particularly true with textures on natural environments: rocks, leaves, water and the like. With the Hero 9 you can see more definition and everything just feels a little sharper. I personally like the extra pop in color, so it’s a general thumbs up from me when it comes to overall image quality. One thing the 5K resolution doesn’t bring along with it are any new slo-mo modes. That 5K is “only” available in 30fps (which is fair), while 4K is still only available up to 60fps. As before, 2.7K and 1080p top out at 120 and 240fps, respectively. Battery Life This one has been on my wishlist since, basically, forever. The “price” we pay for smaller electronics is obviously smaller batteries. It’s something of a catch 22 for things like a GoPro, as you can’t increase battery size without increasing the size of the camera. As mentioned before,...
GoPro has been the industry standard for action cameras for over 15 years. It wasn’t until a few years ago that brands such as DJI and Insta360 began making action cameras with more features that challenged GoPro’s lead. This year, though, GoPro has created by far its most powerful action camera to date. The GoPro Hero 9 is more robust in almost every way: bigger battery, bigger body, bigger video and photo resolutions. Plus, for the first time, it comes in a reusable case with no plastic packaging, which is big for the Earth, dirt, and air this GoPro inspired me to explore. Yes, this camera inspired me and never stopped me, so much so that I wished I had more exciting things to do in front of it. Building upon years of action camera knowledge, GoPro has finally mastered a hardware experience that never frustrated me, while sticking to...
GoPro may be adding one of its most useful new features to its main camera line with the upcoming Hero 9: a front-facing color screen. The feature, revealed in leaked renders obtained by WinFuture, wouldn’t be a first for GoPro; the company added such a screen to last year’s GoPro Max camera. But that device is a 360 camera costing $500, so adding one to the presumably cheaper Hero 9 — so filmmakers (and especially vloggers) can see in full color what the shot looks like as they record — is a nice touch. The leaks indicate the new front-facing screen would remain the same size as the current monochrome status display, which sits on the front next to the lens. That screen typically displays information like frame rate, resolution, and other recording info, but in this context could showcase an in-progress live feed while you record. ...
GoPro's Hero lineup is the most recognizable action camera on the market, but drone-maker DJI has the Osmo Action, a compelling alternative especially when it's $100 off like it is right now. The Osmo Action (8/10, WIRED Recommends) has some tricks GoPro cameras lack, like a wonderfully bright color front screen that makes it much easier to reliably get yourself in the shot. Right now, you can buy the DJI Osmo Action at the lowest prices we've seen, Amazon ($249), Best Buy ($249), B&H Photo ($249), and Adorama ($249). It's a full $120 off the regular $369 price tag. If you want to go the opposite direction artistically and capture some buttery smooth handheld 4K video, the DJI Osmo Pocket Gimbal (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is also on sale. You can grab the pocketable, gimbal-mounted camera for $294 at Amazon, or for $299 at Adorama, Best Buy, and B&HPhoto (back ordered)....
University of Washington researchers have developed a tiny, wearable camera that can be mounted on bugs. The report demonstrated that the backpack-like device was comparable to a GoPro camera and could take high quality, panoramic shots of moving objects while only weighing 250 milligrams, according to a University of Washington study published in a July 15 research article in Science Robotics. WATCH: Shyam Gollakota, a University of Washington associate professor specializing in computers and robotics, expressed excitement over the breakthrough. “We have created a low-power, low-weight, wireless camera system that can capture a first-person view of what’s happening from an actual live insect or create vision for small robots,” he told the University of Washington. “Vision is so important for communication and for navigation, but it’s extremely challenging to do it at such a small scale. As a result, prior to our work, wireless vision has not been possible...
A small robotic digicam backpack has been established by experts that can be strapped on the back of insects to record the earth from the perspective of a bug. The GoPro-type action digicam for beetles was manufactured by experts in the US and weighs just 250 milligrams – about just one-tenth the body weight of a taking part in card. Operated wirelessly through Bluetooth, it captures grainy footage at a rate of up to 5 frames for every second.  But the reward of the extremely-tiny tech is not in its resolution but in its diminutive measurement.  Employs for the digicam could selection from biology to exploring uncharted environments, its builders say.   Scroll down for video   A tiny robotic digital camera backpack has been developed by experts that can be strapped on the again of bugs to history the globe from the standpoint of the bugs The beetle...

Brendan Hesse9 minutes ago•Filed to:GoProGoProWebcamvideo chatSavePhoto: GoPro (YouTube) After months in quarantine, we’re all used to working and socializing remotely (right?). The ubiquity of camera-touting devices and the abundance of video-chat apps made the transition easy (well, not easy), but there’s always room for improvement—and one way to make your video chats look even better is to get a better webcam. The problem? Great webcams are basically sold out everywhere. However, if you have a GoPro HERO8 Black, that’s no longer a problem, because you there’s a way to use it as a webcam instead. The app that makes this magic happen is currently available for macOS, though it’s still in beta (a Windows version is also in the works). You’ll also need beta firmware to put your HERO8 into “webcam” mode, so insert our usual caveats about potential bugs and compatibility errors when using betas apply here. Getting...
You might not be getting much use out of GoPro’s outdoor action cameras during the coronavirus pandemic, so GoPro is making it a lot easier for you to repurpose its flagship Hero 8 camera for use indoors as a macOS webcam. GoPro says support for Windows is currently in development. Using new beta software, you can transform the Hero 8 into a webcam that connects to your computer via USB for use on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other videoconferencing services. Mind you, the Hero 8 is not known for its high-quality imagery compared to DSLR cameras, though it’s certainly a better alternative to the poor image quality of most laptop webcams. Many people social distancing and working from home during the pandemic have relied on videoconferencing tools and webcams to communicate. As a result of the pandemic, webcams have been in higher demand, causing widespread shortages. To address the...
Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, you may not have had the chance to use your fancy new GoPro Hero 8 Black as much as you had planned. The good news is that it can now double as webcam. Following its DSLR and mirrorless counterparts, GoPro has released beta software that allows its latest flagship action camera to function as a USB camera in MacOS.  To connect the Hero 8 Black to your Mac, you’ll need to download the latest firmware for your camera and GoPro’s new Webcam desktop utility app. The software makes the action camera compatible with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Discord and Bluejeans. You can also use it in conjunction with Webex, Skype, Facebook Rooms, Messenger and Slack, provided you access those through Chrome. GoPro says Windows support is on the way.
