The hosts of The View went after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for flying to Cancun while his constituents suffer the repercussions of a severe power crisis — Meghan McCain calling the move the “worst optics I could possibly come up with.” “Millions of Texans are cold, and in darkness, and the governor and other Republicans tried to blame the Green New Deal for the massive power outages, but the truth is that a privatized, deregulated energy system is at fault, and they knew they had problems to fix, and they’ve known this since 2011, but they didn’t do it,” Whoopi Goldberg said, introducing the topic. McCain added that even hospitals have lost power, forcing people to sit around generators with blankets on, exclaiming, “It looks like the apocalypse.” “There’s a lot of heads to roll and a lot of people to blame. I know what’s not helping right now is the fact that senator Ted Cruz...
It’s pungent, no argument there. But it would be a huge mistake to underestimate the culinary power of a block of crumbly, salty feta cheese. Many may think of feta as a mere ingredient in Greek salad, but it’s a cheese with such huge personality — fromage-ality? — that it’s regularly sprinkled far and wide. In Greece, it’s so adored that the average person eats 50 pounds of it a year. One bite explains its popularity. Made right, it’s creamy and rich with layers of complex, earthy flavors that add an umami punch to everything it touches, from quiche to soups, salads, eggs, pizza and even fruit. Feta comes in many forms — blocks, blocks in brine and crumbles. For this taste test, we sampled both blocks and blocks in brine, as they are economical, tasty and reflect feta’s original flavors and textures better than crumbles, which are coated with...
A dog groomer has shaved a pooch's matted fur off in one piece to give the pet a fresh start in the new year.  Catalina Herrera, a dog groomer in Burbank, California, said the dog's matting was some of the worst she had ever seen. 'Matted dog gets a fresh start. Some of the worst matting I've ever seen,' she wrote over footage of the hour-long grooming. She told the dog: 'Would you like to feel better?' The video showed the animal standing on a table as Ms Herrera delicately shaved the hair and rolled its mass of fur gradually down the dog's body.  She put words over the video during the course of the clip, writing: 'All the matts were connected so I had to start from the top of her body.'
Some like their coffee black, bitter and as strong as they can get it. Not a fan? No problem. Transforming that brew into a softer, sweeter, more dessert-like drink is just a splash away — in the form of coffee creamer. In recent years, creamer options have literally exploded. There are creamers made from everything from dairy to grain to nuts. Flavors include vanilla, caramel, pumpkin, peppermint, snickerdoodle and even oatmeal cookie. For this feature, we landed on hazelnut flavored creamers. The best hazelnut coffee creamers turn a simple cup of black coffee into creamy dessert-in-a-cup; a rich gulp that is like melted coffee ice cream, minus some of the sugar. To play well with coffee, creamer needs to be extra-rich, fresh, and must have a decent punch of natural flavor that lingers. Sadly, many brands overshoot the goal, adding far too much sugar, or huge doses of artificial flavoring....
Who makes the best pumpkin pie? If the answer is “me,” then there’s no need to keep reading. This is for the rest of the pumpkin pie-loving masses who look forward to their pumpkin-pie fix every holiday season. Pumpkin spice-flavored donuts, muffins and pancakes are good. Pumpkin spice lattes are tasty. But the real deal is the traditional pumpkin pie, toasty pastry crust filled with a sweet, spicy pumpkin puree. It’s a creamy, sweet and semi-healthy dessert that’s the perfect end to a holiday meal. Bakers insist that there’s nothing difficult about making a decent pumpkin pie, but don’t believe it. Just making a perfect crust and getting the liquid-filled pastry to the oven without spillage is no job for amateurs. And the trick to preserving flaky pastry on a pumpkin pie? That’s either chance or crazy skill. Thankfully, pumpkin pie is such a popular classic that it’s easy to...
The Week I was wrong about Mitt Romney The Donald Trump phenomenon is purported to have divided friendships, families, and even marriages. I can attest to this fact in my own suburban Washington household, for this perhaps peculiar professional reason: It has occasioned my wife, the longtime sufferer of all my hot takes, to ask approximately one-thousand times whether I finally feel bad about all the mean things I said about Mitt Romney. The short answer is, yes!Romney, now the junior senator of Utah, has displayed rare courage and integrity throughout this hell-year. Alone among Republican senators (indeed, alone among any senator in history), he crossed party lines to vote to convict President Trump on the charge of abusing his power by pressuring a foreign government to interfere in our election. And — not alone, exactly, but hardly in plentiful company — he has forthrightly condemned the president for stonewalling the...
The beauty of apple pie starts with mounds of apples piled into a perfectly formed pastry crust. As it bakes, the seductive aroma of apples, cinnamon and butter fills the kitchen with the anticipation. Thankfully, that delicious bite of apple goodness doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours in the kitchen, peeling apples and fighting with a rolling pin. It’s much easier, especially during the holidays, to pick up a frozen apple pie. Unwrap, bake and enjoy. Frozen apple pies come in a range of sizes and styles, from lattice top or traditional crust to crumb-topped. Some are large enough to feed a crowd, others are perfect for small, intimate gatherings. The best pies are pastry masterpieces — flaky crust filled with sweet, tender apple slices flavored with sugar and cinnamon. And that filling is juicy, sweet and plentiful. Bad apple pie is candy sweet, with crust that tastes like old, expired...
The majority of Americans say they are better off now than they were in 2016 when Barack Obama was in office. The new Gallup poll found 56 per cent of registered voters believe they are better off now, the highest figures on record. Only 32 per cent said they were worse off now, despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has cost many their jobs and businesses, and protests over racial injustice. A new Gallup poll found 56 per cent of registered voters believe they are better off now than they were four years ago, the highest figures on record. The approval figures, which have been conducted when sitting presidents have been seeking reelection, are the highest on record. In 2012 under Obama, 45 per cent of voters said they were better off than four years previously, while George W. Bush boasted figures of 47 per cent in 2004. RELATED...
‘Roswell’ Original Cast: Where Are They Now? The best deals to look for on Amazon Prime Day 2020 In one telling stat, the Cowboys are off to their worst start in franchise history For the better part of the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys’ plans for a monumental step forward in 2020 clung to the offense. New head coach Mike McCarthy spent a year studying schemes in his film bunker and arrived with a renewed belief in analytics and personnel flexibility. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore survived the ousting of the coaching staff, promising a level of continuity and growth inside a regime change. First-round draft pick CeeDee Lamb was added to one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. Running back Ezekiel Elliott was motivated and feeling disrespected nationally. And of course, Dak Prescott was preparing for a step into the next echelon of quarterbacks, both in the...
No tolerance for dairy? No problem. If chocolate milk is what you are craving, non-dairy milk makers have you covered. Ready-to-drink liquid chocolate, made with everything from oats to nuts, has hit critical mass. You’ll find non-dairy chocolate drinks in the dairy case and in aseptic boxes on the alternative dairy aisles. Using “milk” made by soaking and pressing almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, oats, peas and more, alternative chocolate milks continue to grow in popularity, not only with plant-based eaters, but with those looking for a lighter, healthier take on a family favorite. It’s important to know that, unlike traditional chocolate milk, which is made from milk, chocolate and stabilizers, most of these alternative milks also incorporate oil, plus a host of other ingredients that help create and maintain pleasing consistency and texture. Great alternative chocolate milk pours like half and half. It’s dreamy rich and velvety and delivers a bold...

Wall Street's main indexes plunged on Friday as a huge sell off of technology stocks continued for a second day and overshadowed data showing a steeper-than-expected drop in the unemployment rate in August.   The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 500 points in early morning trading, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 5 percent and the S&P 500 dropped 2.9 percent.  The tech-heavy Nasdaq is now on track for its worst two-day fall since March.   It comes as shares in tech companies including Apple Inc, Microsoft Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Tesla Inc all slipped for the second day. Tens of thousands of news cases of COVID-19 are diagnosed in the United States every day, but if you listen to President Donald Trump, it’s easy to forget the pandemic is still raging. He shows little interest. He’s more focused, as ever, on his own personal grievances. Of course, he has the luxury of not worrying much about the virus when his job is secured — at least through January — and everyone around him is subjected to a rigorous testing regime that people at most U.S. schools and workplaces can only dream of. As the Democratic Party carried out its national convention this week, Trump continued to give in to his self-destructive impulses. It made for a particularly stark contrast. Most of former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign had been carried out under the radar — he hasn’t simply been hiding in his basement, as critics claim, but he...
