Le’Veon Bell was considered one of the best backs in the NFL after the 2017 season. but after sitting out ’18, signing a big contract with the Jets, and disappointing in ’19, Bell is now looking for a new team. New York released Bell on Tuesday night, one week after he returned from a three-game stint on the IR. Bell will almost certainly get signed at some point soon (assuming he wants to keep playing), but the real questions for fantasy owners is who will be the Jets starting RB and whether Frank Gore and handcuff La’Mical Perine are worth waiver pickups. As a team, the Jets are averaging 103.4 rushing yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry, and they’ve only had one rushing TD by a running back (Josh Adams). Obviously, this hasn’t been a lucrative spot for fantasy owners, so it’s easy to overlook whoever gets the starting job. But with...

Here's a short reminder that the U.S. Postal Service is being headed up by a corrupt lackey of Donald Trump, a man who has spent lavishly on Republicans in order to buy his post. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now admits that coronavirus does spread through airborne transmission, according to updated guidance on the agency's website.  It comes two weeks after CDC officials said their previous warning about airborne transmission was 'in error,' making Monday's update the third time in a month the agency has flip-flopped on how the virus spreads.   'There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected others who were more than six feet away,' the latest guidance reads.  'In these instances, transmission occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces that often involved activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise. Such environments and activities may contribute to the buildup of virus-carrying particles.'    If the virus does spread in fine particles, six feet of distance from an infected person would not necessarily be enough to protect you from catching the virus -...
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County School District, which includes Las Vegas, has started to reorganize its staff and classrooms after being left $61 million short of projects following a decline in enrollment caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Clark County Education Association Executive Director John Vellardita said there were 65 licensed professionals in the district who are facing surplus and 387 vacancies district-wide as of Thursday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Surplus is when the district tallies student enrollment and redistributes funds for staff based on classroom ratios. Vellardita said if the school doesn’t have the students to justify the positions, there’s little recourse to save them. A school facing surplus will initially look for volunteers, and then consider who’s licensed and available for what position, before finally considering seniority, he said. Data from the state's largest school district showed last month that there are 307,210 students enrolled this...

Since the tragedy happened so close to Election Day, and the party has “major party” status, state law requires a special election early next year — but that would mean the seat would be vacant for a short time. (credit: Adam Weeks for Congress. 2020/Facebook) Rep. Craig argues in her lawsuit that the “people of Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District deserve to have a voice fighting for them in Washington.” She alleges that Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon is “in clear violation of federal law” by postponing the election, and she is seeking an injunctive relief. Craig is running for a second term against Republican Tyler Kistner.

Trump has been trying to appeal to Black voters but does not appear to be making significant inroads. Donald Trump on Friday is unveiling a "platinum plan" for Black Americans, which includes calling for diversity training for police in the wake of a spate of police shootings of unarmed Black people. However, just three weeks ago the Trump administration announced it was banning diversity trainings from the federal government. "The President has directed me to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions," Trump's Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought wrote in a memo on Sept. 4.
(CNN) — The death of a 54-year-old Massachusetts construction worker has been attributed to his diet of black licorice, according to  a report published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The man died in a hospital the day after he lost consciousness inside a fast-food restaurant. Doctors wrote that he had “a poor diet, consisting primarily of several packages of candy daily.” Three weeks before he died, he switched from fruit-flavored soft candy to black licorice. Black licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, a sweetening compound derived from licorice root, which can cause a drop in potassium levels in the body. That in turn may cause high blood pressure, swelling, abnormal heart rhythms and even heart failure, according to the FDA. “While black licorice is safe in small quantities, it can be dangerous when consumed in large amounts or even in more moderate amounts on a regular basis,” Dr. Jacqueline...

Shutterstock A man died after eating excessive amounts of black licorice, which contains an ingredient that can deplete potassium and lead to heart rhythm issues.  He had recently switched from red to black licorice, and showed up to the hospital unresponsive after collapsing in a fast-food joint.  There are past reports of licorice causing serious health issues, but death is rare.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.   A Boston-area construction worker died last year after eating a bag and a half of black licorice every day for two weeks, according to a case report published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.  The candy, as well as many others, contains glycyrrhizic acid, which can interfere with the body's nutrient balance and lead to to heart-rhythm problems.  While there are reports of other complications from excess licorice consumption, including hypertension and muscle weakness, death by excess...
They say too much of a good thing can be harmful, as was the case for one Massachusetts man whose love of black licorice ultimately cost him his life. In a case report recently detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine, doctors revealed that a 54-year-old Massachusetts construction worker essentially “overdosed” on black licorice. The candy contains glycyrrhizic acid, which caused the man’s potassium levels to plummet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that if you’re 40 years of age or older, eating 2 ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks could “land you in the hospital with an irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmia” due to the presence of the compound glycyrrhizin in the candy.  (iStock) Dangerously low levels of potassium can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, and, in some cases, congestive heart failure. “Even a small amount of licorice you...
Two Minnesota Republicans have filed a lawsuit against the state over its decision to count ballots that are received a week after the Nov. 3 presidential election. Secretary of State Steve Simon signed a consent decree in August that agreed to allow Minnesota to count ballots "validly cast and postmarked on or before Election Day but received by 8 p.m. within [five] business days of Election Day (i.e., seven calendar days, or one week)." State Rep. Eric Lucero and GOP elector James Carson argue in their lawsuit filed Tuesday that Simon's decree "threatens the integrity of the upcoming election, will result in widespread and severe vote dilution, will (at a minimum) create substantial uncertainty and delay over Minnesota's ability to certify its results." The Honest Elections Project, an advocacy group against election fraud, is backing the lawsuit. Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Hawaii and Utah have successfully conducted all-mail voting for years, but concerns about the efficiency of the...

A Massachusetts man died last year from eating an excessive amount of black licorice, doctors said Wednesday. The unusual case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing how the man consumed a bag and half of the candy every day for two weeks prior to his death. Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which could deplete potassium levels and contribute to heart rhythm problems, doctors explained. “Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine. The man had collapsed inside a fast food restaurant and died the next day. Doctors discovered he had dangerously low potassium, which led to heart rhythm and other problems. The Food and Drug Administration warns eating only 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two...
