Mandel Ngan/Getty Images Americans give President Joe Biden higher marks for his handling of the economy than they gave any his four predecessors at the same point in their presidencies, according to a CNBC survey published Thursday. Biden holds a 62 percent approval rating on that issue, according to the survey. President Barack Obama placed second, with approval from 60 percent of Americans in February 2009. President George W. Bush placed third, with 57 percent approval in March 2001, followed by President Bill Clinton (51 percent) and President Donald Trump (44 percent). Trump, Biden’s immediate predecessor, presided over a surge of 6.7 million new jobs between the time he took office in January 2017 and December 2019. The unemployment rate dipped during that period from 4.7 percent to 3.5 percent, its lowest level since December 1969. It rose to 14.7 percent in April 2020, after the onset of lockdowns related...

The nation reached that goal months before Inauguration Day...
Very quickly, Disney has become perhaps the dominant force in the video streaming world. Just about six months after the company announced it had over 100 million streaming video subscribers, Disney has revealed it has almost that many on Disney+ alone. In today’s earnings report covering the last quarter of 2020, Disney announced that it now has 94.9 million Disney+ subscribers, 39.4 million Hulu subscribers and 12.1 million ESPN+ subscribers. Overall, Disney is up to 146 million streaming video subscribers all told, with Disney+ a force to be reckoned with. Since Disney+ just launched in December of 2019, comparing year-over-year subscriber numbers isn’t super helpful, but the fact that it picked up almost 100 million users in the span of a year is extremely impressive. However, the average monthly revenue per subscriber dropped significantly, from $5.56 a year ago to only $4.04 — that’s in large part to Disney+ Hotstar,...

Disney said Thursday that its Disney+ streaming service racked up nearly 95 million subscribers as of Jan. 2. The Mouse House reported the news as part of its first-quarter earnings report. The company now expects Disney+ will have 230 million to 260 million subscribers by 2024. As the pandemic has raged, Disney+ has benefited from consumers sitting indoors streaming its movies and TV shows. In the fall of last year, the company began restructuring its media and entertainment divisions to focus more on Disney+. The rapid growth of Disney+ has been helped by Disney Plus Hotstar in India and Indonesia, which accounts for about 30 percent of the streamer’s total customers. Nonetheless, on day one Disney+ launched with 10 million sign-ups and by the end of...

Andrew Cuomo announced.  “Across the state, from hospitalizations to infection rate, our numbers are continuing to decline – a sign of hope to all and proof of the dedication New Yorkers have shown to defeating this beast,” Cuomo said in the release.  “We are headed in the right direction, but we are not at the end of the tunnel yet.”  The statewide positivity rate was 3.54 percent on Thursday and new cases are down 48 percent since early January, the peak of the post-holiday surge, Cuomo’s office said.  In New York City, the seven-day average percentage of positive test results was down to 4.95 percent, the lowest it’s been since Dec. 27, with overall new cases down by 23 percent since early-January, the data shows. ...
Uber and Lyft reported their quarterly earnings this week, and while both companies are showing signs of improvement, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cast a long shadow over the overall ride-hailing business. It raises the question of how both companies, neither of which have ever turned a profit, can hope to claw their way out of the deeper financial pit in which they’ve been cast by COVID. 2020 was a brutal year for Uber and Lyft Uber lost $968 million over the last three months, with its adjusted net revenues down 16 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. Over the entire year, the company reported a net loss of $6.7 billion, down slightly from the $8.5 billion it lost in 2019. It brought in less revenue compared to 2019 — $11.1 billion versus $13 billion — likely due to facilitating fewer trips, 5 billion in 2020...
How’s your love life during these stay-at-home times? Not to get personal, but it is Valentine’s Day — and, besides, getting right in the middle of your home life is what I do. When the pandemic first hit, relationship experts warned that the pressures of constant togetherness combined with virus anxiety could push some couples to the breaking point. Even if it didn’t, all that familiarity would most certainly destroy whatever mystery you thought was left between you two. I can’t believe she’s wearing those same yoga pants again. If he wears that Boston Red Sox T-shirt one more day, I’m going to tear it to shreds. How can anyone get any work done with that TV on? His stuff is everywhere. Her phone calls never end. I wish he would shave. I wish she would shave. And — poof! — there goes the magic. So I’m checking on you...
The U.S. budget deficit will be wider than previously forecast because of the $900 billion stimulus bill passed in December, the Congrssional Budget Office said Thursday. The CBO forecasts that the federal government will borrow $2.26 trillion this year. That would make it the second-largest budget deficit in history, just behind last year’s. Last year’s $3.1 trillion was the biggest in absolute numbers and also the largest as a share of gross domestic product. The figures do not take into account the $1.9 trillion spending plan the Biden administration has introduced. If passed, that would likely mean the 2021 budget deficit was even larger than last year’s. The CBO estimates that federal debt held by the public, which hit 100 percent of GDP at the end of fiscal year 2020, will reach 102 percent of GDP at the end of 2021, dip slightly for a few years, and then rise...

"But in no way are we out of the woods, and these numbers...
Washington, DC has reported its first cases of two highly contagious 'super COVID' variants that are sweeping the United States. No information about the residents, including ages, sexes or ethnicities were released, nor is it clear if they had any travel history. Nesbitt said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notified her last night about the variants being detected in the nation's capital and said there may be many more cases because not every positive test undergoes genome sequencing. 'This was a matter of not if but when...This is not surprising to DC Health, but just another opportunity to remind us to be cautious of our behavior,' Nesbitt said. At least 950 cases of the...

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – For Wayne Russell, May 11th, 2020, was a dark day full of sunshine. That was the day he put a take-out sign in front of Duffy’s Tavern. For Russell, like hundreds of other restaurant owners and operators, it was a lifeline in the grips of coronavirus shutdowns. RELATED: Third Stimulus Check: How Much Could Your Next Relief Payment Be? “Survival. I just wanted to get anything going. People picked up, delivery, we passed that, thank God,” he said. The iconic west Miami sports bar and restaurant, where former President Bill Clinton stopped by and generations have sat at the bar and celebrated University of Miami wins and mourned losses, was in the same boat as hundreds of restaurants in Miami-Dade. No indoor dining allowed. “We had to furlough a lot of people, we did the best we could,” said Russell. “It was survival mode, and...
Nearly 60 percent of the people charged over their alleged involvement in the riot on the U.S. Capitol on January 6 had a history of financial troubles, according to a new report. Previous financial hardships suffered by the arrested rioters included bankruptcies, notices of eviction or foreclosure, bad debts, or unpaid taxes of up to $40,000 going back over two decades, the Washington Post revealed in analysis. The Post looked through the financial history of 125 defendants for whom enough data was available and found that the group's bankruptcy rate is 18 percent - which is nearly twice as high as the average rate for the American public. It also revealed that 25 percent of the group had been sued for money owed to a creditor and that 20 percent had at one point faced losing their homes.  Nearly 60 percent of the people charged over their alleged involvement...
The positive COVID-19 infection rate on Long Island continues dropping as it approaches 5 percent for the first time since early last month as both Nassau and Suffolk saw nearly 1,000 newly reported infections each. As of Thursday, Feb. 11, there were 1,292 COVID-19 patients hospitalized...
Consumer spending is on its way to reaching record levels in 2021. Retail sales will grow by 8.1 percent this year — the fastest pace this century — to a record $4.3 trillion, according to retail consulting firm Customer Growth Partners, which tracks government data and its own proprietary research. The robust growth tops the annual 6.4 percent increase in 2004, which had been the biggest increase of the century so far. Americans who kept their jobs — and those who lost jobs but were buoyed by federal and state unemployment checks and stimulus payments — fueled the retail spending on everything from home goods to electronics, work from home gear, sporting goods and toys. The economic collapse in the first half of last year was the “shortest recession in memory at just five months or one month shorter than the 1980 recession,” said CGP president Craig Johnson.  Consumers’...
A new poll finds that one-in-three Americans believe violence is justified if U.S. leaders fail to protect the country, a finding the pollster described as "scary" and that comes weeks after five people died in connection to a mob attack on the U.S. Capitol.  Twenty-nine percent of those polled indicated they completely or somewhat agree with the statement: “If elected leaders will not protect America, the people must do it themselves even if it requires taking violent actions.” The survey from the American Enterprise Institute also found that more than one in three Americans agree with the following statement: "The traditional American way of life is disappearing so fast that we may have to use force to save it.”  A majority, or 55 percent, of Republicans support use of force as a means to stop the decline of "the traditional American way of life," while 43 percent of Republicans express opposition to this idea. ...

As Camden shifts classroom instruction from public to more privately-operated charter and renaissance schools the city has had trouble maintaining diversity among its teaching staff, a new report found.  The study by the New Jersey Policy Perspective, titled, "The 'Whitening' of Camden's Teachers," concluded that as charter school enrollments grow, Camden is employing fewer black teachers. “The state, which controls the schools in Camden, has plowed ahead with charter school expansion — but hasn’t always stopped to think about the consequences,” said Mark Weber, the report's author. “It’s disturbing to find that the teaching workforce in a predominantly black city has gone from being majority black to majority white, mostly because of charter school expansion.” The report by a Trenton-based education think tank comes shortly after the district announced it is closing four of its oldest public schools because of their poor conditions and underuse.  The result is an increasing...
For many teams, having no fans or a limited amount in the stands has led to their home and road splits being less stark. But this has not been the case for Minnesota as it plays host to Purdue on Thursday. Minnesota has gone 8-4-1 against the spread at home this season compared to 1-5 ATS on the road, and has a scoring differential of 30.1 points home to road. The Golden Gophers are outscoring their competition by an average of 13.1 points per game at Williams Arena, but are getting outscored by an average of 17 points away. After missing three games, the Boilermakers got back their top scoring guard, Sasha Stefanovic, in their victory over Northwestern, but the 10.6 points-per-game scorer who is making 44.1 percent of his 3-point shots was not himself, scoring four points in 14 minutes while shooting 0 for 3 from 3-point range....

Loading the player... It’s time to double up.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has now definitively declared that wearing a well-fitting surgical mask underneath a cloth mask can reduce exposure to COVID-19 by 96%.  The new study also advises “knotting the ear loops” of the medical mask to make it more form-fitting.  A man wears a double mask as he walks in Times Square in New York City. The US may not reach herd immunity and return to some semblance of normalcy until Thanksgiving at the current pace of COVID-19 vaccinations and speed of variant spread, Biden administration officials told the Daily Beast.  That's far later than the end-of-summer target date by which Dr Anthony Fauci has estimated that American life might get back to normal.  Dr Fauci, however, remains 'cautiously optimistic' that that day could come by fall if the general public starts getting vaccines by 'April, May, June,' but admitted he's concerned that variants could stretch that timeline in an interview with the Daily Beast.  So far, 10.5 percent of the US population has received one or more doses of COVID-19 vaccine.   But if American officials were to follow Israel's model of reopening, restaurants, gyms and stores when 90 percent of over-50s are vaccinated, these businesses could be operational as early as June, a DailyMail.com analysis...
CHARLOTTE, NC — The smaller, lighter vehicles that women more often drive and the types of crashes they get into, may explain why they are much more likely to suffer a serious injury in a collision than men, a new study published Thursday found. Researchers from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group supported by auto insurers, looked into whether there was some sort of gender bias in the research into vehicle crashes or whether body type had anything to do with the injuries. They analyzed injuries of men and women in police-reported tow-away front and side crashes from 1998 to 2015. Among the findings were that in front crashes, women were three times as likely to experience a broken bone, concussion or other moderate injury and twice as likely to suffer a serious one like a collapsed lung or traumatic brain injury. Men and women crashed...

Photo Courtesy of Simon & Schuster U.S. health care costs roughly twice as much per person as it does in other developed nations, but ranks near the bottom in quality measures. Philip Moeller, journalist and author of “Get What’s Yours for Health Care: How to Get the Best Care at the Right Price” (available now from Simon & Schuster, a ViacomCBS company), cautions against losing sight of the fact that our national health care spending is wildly out of control. And though the coronavirus pandemic exposed many of the system’s shortcomings, major health care reform seems unlikely in the face of a deeply divided government and the entrenched interests of for-profit health providers. Read more in his original piece below. It is no exaggeration to say that health care has never occupied such a central place in our minds.
