Around 3 million people in Texas are still without power Wednesday morning, leaving many without a way to heat their homes as unusually frigid temperatures continue in the U.S. south central region. “We know this is hard. We continue to work as quickly and safely as possible to restore power,” said the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, the state’s grid operator, in a tweet Wednesday morning. ERCOT said they had been able to restore some power overnight, but are now without 14,000 megawatts of power supply as they lost access to electricity Texas was importing from the Midwest, which is dealing with its own power emergency. “We hope to reduce outages over the course of the day,” ERCOT said. The grid operator said 2.7 million people in the state are without power as of early Wednesday morning. The power outages could continue throughout the day and...
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Ash Wednesday, as with many events during the coronavirus pandemic, may be a little different this year. Mary Ross Agosta, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Miami told CBS4 News on Wednesday, all CDC guidelines will remain in place and masks must be worn while ashes are given. RELATED: Florida Senate Bill Would Add Gender, Gender ID To Hate Crime Law However, no other safety protocols are in place, as suggested last month by the Vatican. Those Vatican issued guidelines in the COVID era included having priests sprinkle ashes on the head rather than rub them on the forehead to limit the possible spread if one hand touched many foreheads. They also said priests should wear masks and recite the traditional “Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return” once before for everyone and not to each person as they received ashes. However,...
Video footage from NBC News showed dynamite taking down a former Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino on Wednesday. Former President Donald Trump severed relationships with the Atlantic City, New Jersey casino in 2009 following multiple bankruptcy filings, though his name remained on the building for a short time, according to The New York Times on Wednesday. The casino was permanently closed in 2014 and two years afterwards, billionaire investor Carl C. Icahn acquired the property. Controlled Demolition Inc. placed around 3,000 pieces of dynamite at the site of the casino last week, which destroyed the 34-story building by strategically using the building’s own weight to bring it down, according to the NYT. Despite its long history as an iconic part of Atlantic City, the hotel had begun to fall into disrepair and pieces of the exterior were beginning to fall apart, NBC News reported. CHICAGO (WLS) -- Gov. JB Pritzker will lay out his vision for the Illinois budget Wednesday, and already there's a battle brewing.House Republicans put the governor on notice that this year needs greater transparency in the process.Pritzker had been counting on increased revenue from the graduated income tax to make up for revenue shortfalls, but voters rejected that tax change in November, thus forcing a change of plans."We're in a really tough spot," said Professor David Merriman, UIC Department of Public Administration. "The only way to balance the budget is either to increase revenues or cut spending, and both of those paths are going to be very difficult to do."Last week, Pritzker released his budget overview with a warning: "We're going to have to make some painful cuts in state government in order to balance the budget."In a preview of his Wednesday budget speech, Pritzker projects a $3 billion deficit,...

While giving up those things may seem hard for you, Christians long ago used to give up a whole lot more. Ash Wednesday is today. It marks the first day of Lent in Western churches. MANILA (Reuters) - Catholics in the Philippines observed Ash Wednesday in unconventional ways for a second successive year, with devotees metres apart and wearing mandatory masks and face shields to mark the start of the Christian season of Lent. Churchgoers observed social distancing as much as Roman Catholic traditions in Manila, with priests and nuns modifying a few practices to try to maintain a sense of normalcy while the highly contagious coronavirus still rages. "I attended today to pray for this pandemic to end and for all of us who have suffered," said Gener Lacerna after attending mass. Instead of dabbing ash in the sign of a cross directly onto foreheads, nuns sprinkled ash on the tops of people's heads to minimise physical contact with those entering churches in a country where about 80% of the 108 million population are Catholic. People queued in orderly lines, each standing on evenly...

(CNN)President Joe Biden suggested that all 300 million Americans could be offered Covid-19 vaccines by the end of July during a CNN town hall Tuesday as he urged the public to get the shot. "By the end of July we'll have over 600 million doses, enough to vaccinate every single American," he said, while admitting the process of administering the doses may take longer.Biden would only commit to a return to normal by Christmas, saying he did not want to boost hopes when he could not be certain of a still-early vaccine rollout. The prediction of nearly another year in pandemic-dampened conditions was admittedly not optimistic. But Biden still said it was as good as he could offer with any level of confidence, Kevin Liptak writes. The Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons were supposed to play Wednesday night. NHL games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday between the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators had already been scrapped. No makeup dates were announced. The shuffling of pro events came amid adjustments for several men's and women's college basketball games in Texas because of frigid temperatures and icy conditions for traveling. The NBA said the Pistons-Mavericks postponement was because of a “government shutdown” of American Airlines Center, home of the Mavericks and Stars. The league didn't elaborate on the nature of the shutdown. More snow was in the forecast into Wednesday, although not accompanied by the single-digit temperatures that followed a weekend storm...
