Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Kensington Palace, 2017 There's an old saying that the apple never falls far from the tree. Not true in my case. My father was a working-class Tory and I was a typical young Leftie. We argued about everything. Except the Royal Family. One of my earliest memories of my childhood in Splott, a working-class area of Cardiff, was when the Queen paid a visit. The entire street — indeed the entire neighbourhood — turned out to catch a glimpse of her motorcade on its way to the city centre. But he stayed at home, ostentatiously slamming the front door shut and ordering us kids to stay at home, too. Another memory was when he was thrown out of the Conservative club on a busy Friday night. He had shown 'disrespect' to the monarchy by refusing to sit in the only spare seat because it...

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, scientists and health experts around the world have promoted social distancing and mask-wearing. In the United States, such public health measures have been the subject of political controversy, largely due to the fact that conservative-leaning Americans have been reluctant to embrace them. A new study from the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business and Stockholm Business School suggests that a different approach to public messaging could persuade right-leaning Americans to embrace prevention measures. Published Monday in The Journal of the Association for Consumer Research, the study involved more than 2,300 participants, both Democrats and Republicans. Authors Aylin Cakanlar, Remi Trudel, and Katherine White established that conservatives tend to focus on self-reliance, while liberals “take more of a community-minded view.” In other words, they found that liberals believe in community-minded actions, while conservatives do not. As White explained, “Republicans have this perception...

LONDON—Henry Kissinger once tried to come between the National Security Agency (NSA) and Britain’s GCHQ, their signals intelligence (SIGINT) brothers from the other side of the pond, and the response from the U.S. intelligence agency was short and swift. “The NSA simply said, ‘Drop dead,’” says the author of a new authorized history of GCHQ, who explains that the two intelligence agencies have a closer relationship with each other than they do with their own governments. The world’s two leading signals intelligence agencies are so tightly bound together that they share virtually all of the material they gather with no questions asked. Over the years, GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) has frequently protected the NSA from rivals within the U.S. including the CIA and Naval intelligence units—and even their respective presidents and prime ministers come second in the hierarchy of loyalty, according to Behind the Enigma: The Authorized History of GCHQ,...

So I read it. And I was very moved by the concept of the piece. It was very unusual, very different.” Olmos called Robert McEveety, the writer-producer of “The Devil Has a Name,” told him he was interested, but having been around Hollywood for many decades, he had a question for him first. “I said, ‘You have the money?’” he recalls asking and that McEveety said yes. “I said, ‘What’s the budget?’” McEveety told him. “So I said, ‘First of all, I’d like to know if I...

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — When it comes to mannerisms, speech patterns, dialects, and other ways of speaking, it’s not at all uncommon for someone to speak similarly to his or her parents. How else could our beautiful, lovable Boston accents persist if not for such a phenomenon. Yet when we’re talking about the manner of speaking from a legendary football coach who speaks to the media multiple times every week for decade after decade, it’s nevertheless difficult to ignore when his son becomes a coach and sounds just like his father. That’s been the case for Steve Belichick, who’s entering his ninth season as a Patriots coach. He is by no means new to the Foxboro scene, having essentially grown up in and around the building before becoming a coaching assistant nine years ago. Yet seemingly whenever he speaks to the media, he gets reminded of how well his...

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband committed suicide. It has been an unbearable tragedy. Generally, I have not kept his cause of death a secret. If I have to tell a close friend, I will tell them that he took his own life. If I have to tell a business acquaintance, I’m more likely to say he died unexpectedly. In general, I don’t tell anyone the morbid details. I recently saw an acquaintance whom I’ve been friendly with, and whom I only see once or twice a month. I hadn’t seen her since this occurred. She made a small innocent joke about my husband. I paused for a moment and said, “You couldn’t have known this, but he died.” She was of course shocked, and said, “Are you kidding me?” I assured her I wasn’t and she was very apologetic.
