A 10-year-old boy in Michigan has undergone four amputations of his hands and legs after a rare bout of a serious coronavirus-related inflammatory condition. Dae'Shun Jamison was diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and had his right leg amputated in early February at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, a spokesperson for Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, where the boy entered rehabilitation and recovery, confirmed to Fox News. The child was transferred back to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital on Monday for amputations of both hands and his left leg.  Brittney Autman, the child’s mother, detailed the story on a related GoFundMe page, writing on Tuesday, "Dae’Shun is very emotional about his amputations and it breaks my heart.  Please keep the prayers coming." For several seconds, 8-year-old Xitlali Vasquez’s heart stopped beating. The girl’s parents had driven her to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in May when her temperature spiked and delirium sent her into a fever-sleep. She was placed in intensive care as specialists tended to inflammation around her heart and arteries. Her mother watched helplessly from the hallway as doctors rushed to revive her youngest child. It would be a few more days before the girl regained full consciousness and even longer before she was allowed to return to their Hawthorne home. “It was just like a nightmare,” Rosa Vasquez said about her daughter’s 12-day hospitalization. “There was a time where I thought she was going to die.” Xitlali, which means “star” in Nahuatl, was one of the first children in Los Angeles County to be diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a rare and potentially deadly illness known as MIS-C that infects...
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Trader Joe's has set the bar for safety among grocery retailers in Colorado — but even the best practices can't guarantee that the novel coronavirus won't gain admittance. According to the latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the chain's Colorado Springs branch has suffered an outbreak. It's one in a wave of site-based infections that's set a new record for the third week in a row. The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The CDPHE's October 14 update lists 897 total outbreaks in the state so far: 274 active, 623 resolved. That's...

Two King Soopers stores make the list, including King Soopers #1, at 1331 Speer Boulevard. The Costco is at 6400 West 92nd Avenue in Westminster. Certain high blood pressure medications may help reduce the severity of disease and mortality rates for those infected with the novel coronavirus, according to a new study published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports. Researchers from the University of East Anglia looked at 19 studies in the meta-analysis involving approximately 28,000 patients who took antihypertension medications such as Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB) and found they had less of a risk of severe illness and deaths from the virus than those who did not take the medications. The investigators stated in the university’s news release that they looked at “critical” outcomes of the patients, such as ICU admissions, being put on a ventilator, and death. BLOOD TEST IDENTIFIES WHICH CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS MAY BE HELPED OR HARMED BY STEROID TREATMENT “Hypertensive patients with COVID-19 who were on ACEi/ARB were 0.67 times less likely to have a fatal/critical outcome than those not on ACEi/ARB. (AP) – At least 285 U.S. children have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus and while most recovered, the potential for long-term or permanent damage is unknown, two new studies suggest. The papers, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, provide the fullest report yet on the condition. The condition is known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. It is considered uncommon and deaths are rare; six children died among the 285 in the new studies. Including cases in Europe, where it was first reported, about 1,000 children worldwide have been affected, a journal editorial said. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s case definition includes current or recent COVID-19 infection or exposure to the virus; a fever of at least 100.4 for at least 24 hours; severe illness requiring hospitalization; inflammatory markers in blood tests, and evidence of problems affecting at least...
