The city has said the Centennial Hall will be open as an emergency shelter at 8 p.m. for anyone who chooses to leave their home. Safety measures intended...

Reuters February 23, 2021 0 Comments An FBI warning that a protest by Donald Trump’s supporters could turn violent reached the U.S. Capitol Police the day before the deadly assault, but top officials in charge of securing Congress that day did not see it, they told lawmakers on Tuesday. The officials told two Senate panels looking into failures ahead of the Jan. 6 attack that the intelligence they received did not prepare them for hundreds of Trump backers, many working in teams and wearing tactical gear, storming the building. They gave conflicting accounts of conversations ahead of the assault on whether to call in National Guard support and what if any role concerns about keeping up the appearance of an open Capitol building played in the security failure. One of the four, former Capitol Police chief Steven Sund, told senators that he did not see a bulletin issued by...
Former United States Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund said Tuesday that he didn’t see the FBI’s warning of violence on the Capitol building and said he regretted resigning. “Yes, I do sir, I certainly do regret signing, resigning. I love this agency. I love the women and men of this agency and I regret the day I left,” Sund responded to Republican Arizona Sen. Ron Johnson in a Senate hearing on Tuesday. CAPITOL rioters reportedly came "prepared for war," but there was no FBI warning about the coordinated attack, the police chief said. Testifying publicly for the first time about the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, former security officials say that bad intelligence was to blame for the disastrous failure to anticipate the violent intentions of the mob. 1Former US Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund testifies before the SenateCredit: EPA They say that left them unprepared for the attack that was unlike anything they had ever seen before. (CNN)Confirmation duels over Joe Biden's Cabinet picks have suddenly turned nasty, ringing alarm bells about the cliffhanger nature of a 50-50 Senate and bitter fights to come over the President's ambitious agenda.Growing intrigue over a trio of controversial presidential picks is also underscoring the power of individual senators such as Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, when the partisan balance is so evenly divided. While Biden has seen blue-chip national security selections such as Antony Blinken as secretary of state and Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon installed, the focus on nominees whose portfolios touch on some of the most sensitive domestic political issues is bringing the confirmation process to a contentious crescendo. The nomination of Neera Tanden, Biden's pick to lead the Office of Management and Budget, is in deep peril after Manchin jumped ship and a string of Republicans signaled they couldn't support her.Another bruising...

The House's investigating committee said Coleman's past conduct was “unfitting” for a lawmaker and that he and the House's top Democrat, Minority Leader Tom Sawyer, must choose a mentor. Sawyer and 12 other Democrats filed the complaint against the 20-year-old Coleman last month, hoping that the full House would remove him from office. During a Thursday interview with MSNBC, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) sounded off on the GameStop saga that saw the video game store’s stock skyrocket. The GameStop surge caused trading apps like Robinhood to restrict purchases of the store’s shares on its platform. Warren said ahead of the House Financial Services Committee hearing that what happened with GameStop should be a “warning bell” that “we have a stock market that is subject to manipulation” and “not functioning.” She urged the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to “put in place the appropriate regulations” to prevent future GameStop scenarios. “This should be a warning bell,” Warren advised. “What happened with GameStop is not just about GameStop. It is the warning bell that we have a stock market that is subject to manipulation, a stock market that is not functioning. And that’s why the SEC needs to get up off their rear ends and put...
