(CBS)- Lawrence Guy was recognized as one of the Patriots leaders when he was named a team captain entering this season. As he leads the team on the field, he’s continuing to work to be a leader for local kids off it as well. Last week, Guy hosted his 9th Back to School event, joining forces with Crossroads in surprising 150 underprivileged students between the ages of 14 and 18 in the area with school supplies they need to maintain as much normalcy as they can in what is a different school year. The event was different this year of course, going virtual due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but Guy navigated around that by holding a Zoom call with all of the kids opening the floor for their questions and providing advice to help them feel comfortable in what is an uncertain year. Jared Kushner helped lead the White House response to the novel coronavirus pandemic in March, but when he met with a group of business leaders about how they might be able to help states with the supplies they needed, he reportedly told them that the federal government wasn’t going to get involved. According to an article from Vanity Fair, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser gathered together with venture capitalists and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs in the White House to figure out how to supply masks, gloves, and other personal equipment to the areas that needed them. After Donald Trump declined to invoke the Defense Production Act, which would allow the administration to assist with gathering and distributing supplies, the group convened to help make the case for invoking the act. But instead of having the sort of meeting they were expecting, attendees were surprised when Kushner began to rail against...
(CNN)As her silver crown shimmered in the sunlight, Shaandiin Parrish loaded car after car in the Navajo Nation's Huerfano chapter area with food and toilet paper. When the coronavirus pandemic halted the nursing home visits and speeches that kept her Miss Navajo Nation predecessors busy, Parrish knew she couldn't hang up her crown and sash."She becomes everybody's mother, everybody's sister, everybody's aunt," the 26-year-old said about holding her title. The Navajo Nation, spanning more than 27,000 square miles across parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, had at one point some of the highest Covid-19 infection rates per capita in the United States. Regular weekend lockdowns and nightly curfews have since helped flattened its curve, but authorities are not easing restrictions yet.The incidence of Covid-19 cases among American Indians and Alaska Natives has been 3.5 times higher than among White people, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and...
(CNN)It all began with a DM.Laura Ciervo, a preschool and elementary school-based speech language pathologist in New Jersey, had created an Amazon wish list of school supplies for the upcoming year. While many schools opted to continue distance learning amid a pandemic, Ciervo's school reopened its doors. That meant Ciervo needed to reinvest in supplies for her classroom. She normally dishes out her own money on them. But with the pandemic, that would mean spending way more than usual, because children are no longer able to share supplies. She knew she needed some help -- so she decided to randomly reach out to one of her favorite celebrities on Instagram -- comedian Erin Foster -- to see if she'd respond.Much to her surprise, Foster, who has more than half a million followers, replied to the direct message -- and was happy to help. She shared Ciervo's list on her Instagram on...
(CNN)Nine people who were arrested by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last week after their vehicles aroused suspicion, were volunteers on their way to deliver food to protesters, according to group organizers.Leaders from Riot Kitchen, a group formed to feed protesters in Seattle in the aftermath of George Floyd's death, told CNN that volunteer crew members had been planning to join a caravan headed to help feed demonstrators at Friday's March on Washington when they were arrested at a Kenosha gas station on Wednesday. The leaders who spoke to CNN asked that their names not be published out of concerns for their safety. At the time, volunteers were refueling vehicles and getting gas for the generator they use for cooking, the organization said in an August 28 statement on Twitter. The Los Angeles Dodgers ace surprised students at his annual back to school event. We’re currently living in unprecedented times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has curtailed nearly every annual event. But leave it to Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw to adapt to the changes. Every year, Kershaw’s challenge hosts a Back to School Bash, with the help of the Dream Center of Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Dodgers Foundation. Kershaw provided 3,700 pre-registered students with backpacks filled with school supplies, food boxes, face masks, sunscreen and hygiene supplies on Saturday. Given that social distancing is of the utmost priority right, the seventh annual event was transformed into a drive-thru at Dodger Stadium, where students can get their supplies from the comfort of their car. Kershaw took things a step further, as children had the chance to video chat with the star pitcher and his family...

Mexico City (Víctor Juárez) – Legislators from the PAN of the capital proposed to give an economic bonus for 5 thousand pesos to workers in the Health Sector and personnel of Clean and public transportation in recognition of their work during the epidemic of Covid-19, where they have been more exposed than the rest of the population. The coordinator of the caucus in the capital’s Congress, Mauricio Tabe, and América Rangel, pointed out that these workers are in the first line of defense and their work is increasingly risky. “They are risking their lives, they are doubling turns and they are doing everything possible so that we can get ahead soon,” said Tabe. Both criticized the government’s reaction, pointing out that it abandoned Limpia’s doctors and workers by denying them the necessary supplies or paying them on time: in the case of the latter, they earn 1,446 pesos biweekly...

AVONDALE — Last week, the owners of D-Men Tap were raising money for service industry workers impacted by the coronavirus shutdown. But after massive demonstrations protesting the police killing of George Floyd, the owners of the Avondale bar and restaurant shifted the focus of the fundraiser. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, they’re now providing food and other donations to those in South and West side communities. “Everyone can do something to help, whether its donate money, read literature written by people of color, try to listen and engage your friends and family that might be showing signs of ignorance. … Just educate yourself, listen,” said co-owner Shawn Podgurski. Podgurski said he and Dave Duchek and Phil Naumann, also owners of D-Men Tap at 2849 W. Belmont Ave., quickly mobilized for their refocused fundraiser.
