The festival may be virtual due to the epidemic, which should allow Hollywood to celebrate its directors and pay posthumous tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. No champagne, no stars on the red carpet, but always a shower of rewards: the Golden Globes Festival may become virtual on Sunday evenings due to epidemics that should allow Hollywood to celebrate its directors and pay a mortal tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. The Golden Globes are one of the most coveted awards in American cinema, and this year’s competition for the Oscars can elevate favorites or, conversely, shower their confidence. As for the 2019 edition, the referee of the Hollywood Foreign Press Club that presented the prizes had a bare nose: all the Golden Globe winners in the cinema category won the Oscars a few weeks later, except for the film music. Health officials in England say they have not recorded any cases of influenza in seven weeks as the coronavirus pandemic and related restrictions continue in the country. “The decrease in flu cases this year is likely due to changes in our behavior, such as social distancing, face coverings, and hand-washing, as well as the reduction in international travel,” said Dr. Vanessa Saliba, the head of flu at Public Health England. “In England, more than 15 million people receive the flu jab every year, which helps protect them from flu and also stops them spreading it to others.” Saliba said this year’s flu shot program is on pace to break records. “This season’s immunization program is on track to be the most successful ever, with the highest levels of vaccine uptake recorded for those 65 years and over, 2- and 3-year-olds, and healthcare workers,” Saliba said. 2021 is going to be a really big year for electric vehicles. Car-buying experts at Edmunds expect US sales to grow to 2.5 percent from 1.9 percent in 2020. That’s thanks to more options and growing interest from interested consumers. Nearly three dozen EVs from 21 automotive brands are expected to go on sale this year, compared to 17 vehicles from 12 brands in 2020. Notably, this will be the first year that all three major vehicle categories will be represented: there will be 11 electric sedans, 13 SUVs, and six pickup trucks in 2021, whereas only 10 cars and seven SUVs were available last year. We thought we’d zero in on seven different EVs coming out this year and talk about what they tell us about where things are headed in the future — for the auto industry, for the climate, and for all of us that need...

Seven Senate Republicans voted to convict former President Donald Trump, even though he was ultimately acquitted in his second impeachment trial. Trump was charged with inciting an insurrection on January 6, after a mob of his supporters stormed Capitol Hill as Congress began certifying the 2020 presidential election vote. Liverpool’s struggles show no sign of abating, with the Reds hitting a seven-year low in a 3-1 defeat at Leicester while recording an unwanted Premier League first under Jurgen Klopp. The reigning Premier League champions continue to see a title that they waited 30 years to claim slip from their grasp in 2020-21. Injury setbacks and struggles for consistency have been doing their cause few favours, with another serious wobble endured at the King Power Stadium despite seeing Mohamed Salah fire them in front. What does defeat mean for Liverpool? The Reds have suffered three successive top-flight defeats under Klopp for the first time since a German tactician inherited the reins at Anfield from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015. The last time they became stuck in such a rut was back in 2014, when the current Leicester boss was calling the shots on Merseyside. 3 – Liverpool have lost...

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani agreed to a two-year, $8.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, avoiding arbitration. The two-way player will make $3 million in 2021 and $5.5 million in 2022. Both years are guaranteed. Ohtani had asked for $3.3 million for the upcoming season, and the Angels had countered with $2.5 million. Ohtani earned $259,259 in prorated pay from his $700,000 contract in 2020, but the 2018 AL Rookie of the Year struggled at the plate and on the mound in his return from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani batted .190 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 175 plate appearances as the Angels' designated hitter, with his numbers declining sharply from his first two seasons in the majors. He also performed poorly in his first two mound starts since 2018, giving up seven runs on three hits and...

Formula One world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton has finally signed a new one-year deal with Mercedes for the 2021 season. The news was confirmed by the all-conquering team this morning after months of deliberation and delay, and with just over a month before pre-season testing gets underway. It is believed that Hamilton, who was knighted in the New Year honours, was compelled to compromise on his original pay demands of £40million a year given the financial climate and his lack of alternative seats.  Hamilton became the sport's most successful driver ever last year after breaking Michael Schumacher's all-time win record and drawing level with the German's achievement of seven titles. He has won 74 of his 95 race wins with the Brackley squad. The 36-year-old's previous deal lapsed in 2020 but he will now race for Mercedes for a ninth season, and will partner Finn Valtteri Bottas in the black-livered Mercedes again this...

The coronavirus pandemic will drag on for another seven years at the current rate of vaccinations worldwide, new calculations predict.  It will take that long to reach Dr Anthony Fauci's estimate for the herd immunity threshold of 75 percent of people inoculated globally, according to Bloomberg's vaccination calculator.  More than 4.5 million vaccines are being administered a day, for a total of 119.8 million shots given worldwide.  The US has vaccinated 8.7 percent of its population thus far, at a rate of 1.3 million shot given a day. After a slow start, the rollout is picking up steam and saw a record 1.7 million people vaccinated Thursday. Despite ranking sixth in the world for the pace of its vaccinations, the US is predicted to reach herd immunity just in time for New Year's 2022.    But all of this depends on whether the vaccines are effective against variants like those that...

The Rakuten Golden Eagles announced Thursday that Tanaka had returned to his original club, which posted him in late 2013 so he could play stateside. Terms were not disclosed. Reports on Wednesday said the sides were close to an agreement. Tanaka, 32, became an MLB free agent in the offseason after his seven-year, $155 million contract with the Yankees expired. (CNN)The numbers are in. The hottest seven years in recorded history are: 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014. Notice a trend? As 2020 smashed hurricane and wildfire records, doing $90 billion worth of damage in the United States alone, new data shows last year neck-and-neck with 2016 as the hottest year in recorded history. But at this point, says NASA climate scientist Kate Marvel, rankings are worthless. It's all about that horrifying trend towards a level of global overheating impossible to control."What really matters, and what I think is really significant and really concerning, is that the seven hottest years on record were the past seven years," Marvel told CNN. Her work is part of a global consensus among scientists -- from the United Kingdom's Met Office, Europe's Copernicus Climate Change Service, Berkeley Earth and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration -- that the planet's man-made fever shows...

A record 59 players became free agents at the 2020 non-tender deadline, which was 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday.  What does that mean? It means that teams didn’t agree to contracts for 2021 with their arbitration-eligible players and cut them loose rather than heading to an arbitration hearing.
