Former mobile network executive Gary Miller, founder of a cybersecurity startup called Exigent Media, on Tuesday accused China of using mobile phone networks in the Caribbean to conduct surveillance operations against Americans. Miller detailed the findings of his report on Chinese cell phone espionage in an interview with the UK Guardian: At the heart of the allegations are claims that China, using a state-controlled mobile phone operator, is directing signaling messages to US subscribers, usually while they are travelling abroad. Signaling messages are commands that are sent by a telecoms operators across the global network, unbeknownst to a mobile phone user. They allow operators to locate mobile phones, connect mobile phone users to one another, and assess roaming charges. But some signaling messages can be used for illegitimate purposes, such as tracking, monitoring, or intercepting communications. US mobile phone operators can successfully block many such attempts, but Miller believes the...

The other day, I was in a metro area Dollar Tree to stock up on Smarties (because, obviously, Smarties are good), when I saw him: the one guy in the store without a mask. The modest-sized outlet was fairly crowded — around fifteen to twenty customers and three employees desperately trying to handle the rush. The store appeared to be short-staffed, with just one checkout line open. Yet all the workers and everyone waiting to pay for items, as well as various folks in aisles, wore a facial covering. Some were cloth, others were made of disposable paper, and all but one were worn properly, concealing both nose and mouth. Even a woman energetically talking on a cell phone was masked, putting the lie to the canard about the voices of those so garbed being impossible to understand. Hell, the people in the parking lot could probably have picked out...
The Virginia government will reportedly have spent over $1.7 million for the COVID-19 exposure reporting app COVIDWISE, which 13.5% of cell phone users have downloaded. Approximately $1.5 million was spent on marketing alone. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and SpringML Inc. received $229,000 in CARES federal emergency funding to co-develop and launch COVIDWISE. The app allows users to upload their positive test results, which allows other users to receive exposure notifications. Users will only be notified if they have been within a 6 foot vicinity for over 15 minutes. COVIDWISE is a collaborative project between Google and Apple. The app doesn’t collect any personal or geographic data from users. The $1.5 million went to Madison+Maine, a Richmond-based marketing company. Madison+Maine has worked extensively with government and administrative bodies in the past – including the Virginia Attorney General’s office and the City of...
Video shows a confrontation between a cyclist and a driver turn downright disgusting Wednesday — when the motorist lobbed a massive loogie at the rider. “If you’re cycling in New York, you’ve got to assume drivers are going to be angry with you just for existing,” wedding photographer Kara McCurdy said of the encounter. “I was not expecting to be spat on.” McCurdy, 27, of Astoria, said she was turning onto the city’s new Crescent Street bike lane at around 4:30 p.m. when she noticed a white BMW headed towards her in the freshly-painted two-way path. McCurdy held her position, forcing the driver to stop. “He slammed on the brakes and was visibly frustrated, and yelling at me,” she told The Post. “I pulled out my phone. I was just going to take a video and send it to my friends. I was like, I’m going to post this on...

Hackers linked to the Chinese government have been spying on Uighur Muslims in China since 2013 by hacking cell phone apps, according research from cybersecurity company Lookout.  Lookout’s research found that legitimate Android apps, such as religious Quran text apps used by Uighur Muslims, were hacked to include malicious code, Lookout security intelligence engineer Apurva Kumar told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an email. Other apps used to collect personal data from Uighur Muslim populations were keyboard, font, file-management and plugin apps, according to the research. Tibetans were also targeted by the same technology disguised as apps, such as a travel application called “Quick-Search Tibet,” Lookout reported.
