BRITAIN must look to India, Australia and even space for its future growth, a landmark post Brexit study will say. It will say we must develop Indo-Pacific relations — while remaining firm friends with the US. 1Here's what Boris might look like if he took on a space battle Boris Johnson’s long awaited Integrated Review into post-Brexit defence and foreign policy will be published in ten days’ time. As well as urging Britain to forge closer ties with countries like Japan, Singapore and India, it will also recommend a massive overhaul of defence spending to focus on Artificial Intelligence. That would cement our status as a “global science superpower” — and involve pumping billions into a new British Space Force. It will also urge a major decrease in the UK’s reliance on Chinese goods, firms and technology. But it also risks controversy by urging Britain to turn away from alliances...
New York prosecutors investigating Donald Trump and the Trump Organization are sharpening their focus on the company's long-serving chief financial officer, delving into his personal and financial affairs, according to reports. The increasing focus on CFO Allen Weisselberg is aimed at 'flipping' him to cooperate with the investigation - an attempt to turn one of Trump's most important aides into a witness against him, according to the Washington Post. Weisselberg, 73, has served as CFO to the Trump Organization for more than two decades and could provide prosecutors invaluable information about the inner workings of the company. Over the last few weeks, prosecutors working for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. have been interviewing witnesses who know Weisselberg, and have also asked them questions about his two adult children, Barry and Jack Weisselberg. Senators may have a late night ahead of them as a series of amendments are expected to be offered to the legislation and it remains unclear when there will be a final vote on the thirteen figure package.   Meanwhile, the House of Representatives canceled its votes scheduled for Thursday after U.S. Capitol Police revealed it has received intelligence reports that indicated 'a possible plot to breach the Capitol by an identified militia group.' 'The decision was made that it was possible to finish all of the House's legislative work for the week tonight,' said the office of...

Miami : The president of the United States, Joe Biden, highlighted the friendship between Canada and his country, in the first bilateral meeting of his mandate, a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in which they sought to leave behind the turbulence experienced during the government of Donald Trump. “The United States has no friend as close as Canada,” Biden said at the beginning of the videoconference, noting that this is why Trudeau was also the recipient of his first call as president. The Canadian prime minister responded in the same tone, highlighting “the extraordinary friendship” that unites neighboring countries. Before the meeting, a senior US official explained that the meeting would serve as a “road map” to energize this link. The covid-19 pandemic forces Biden to refrain from traveling or entertaining his counterparts, so he launched this meeting format, hoping that they will allow him to use...

DUBAI (Reuters) - Delegations from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar met in Kuwait on Monday for the first time since an agreement last month to end a rift of more than three years, the UAE state news agency WAM said. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt agreed in January at a summit in Saudi's al-Ula to restore diplomatic, trade and travel ties with Doha, which had been severed in 2017 over accusations that Qatar supported terrorism, a charge it denies. "The two sides discussed joint mechanisms and procedures for implementing the al-Ula statement. They emphasised the importance of preserving Gulf kinship and developing joint Gulf action in the interest of GCC countries and their citizens, and of achieving stability and prosperity in the region," WAM said. De Blasio announced last month that he was terminating all of the Trump Organization's concession contracts with the city to punish Donald Trump for the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Imaad Zuberi, a California venture capitalist and campaign fundraiser who worked to gain influence with prominent Republicans and Democrats, including former President Donald Trump and President Biden, was sentenced to a dozen years in prison for illegal donations and foreign agent lobbying schemes. A judge also ordered him to pay $15.7 million in restitution, along with a criminal fine of $1.75 million. Zuberi, 50, pleaded guilty in November 2019 to charges of tax evasion, making nearly $1 million in illegal campaign contributions using straw donations and foreign funds, and falsifying records of his extensive work as a foreign agent on behalf of Sri Lanka, as well as lobbying for individuals and governments from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey, Bahrain, and Libya. Chicago announced on Wednesday that a city commission is reviewing the fate of 41 statues including those honoring Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, and Christopher Columbus. Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced that the city is seeking public comments before a decision is made on whether to remove the statues and replace them with something else as part of the Chicago Monuments Project. They were identified by the commission from more than 500 monuments around the city, after a review began over the summer when Black Lives Matter protesters attacked two statues of Columbus, forcing Lightfoot to have them temporarily removed. The mayor said that the project was launched afterward as part of a 'racial healing and historical reckoning' in the city, targeting Lincoln despite Illinois' own motto naming it the 'Land of Lincoln'. The historical figures identified for removal are said to have ties to slavery,...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Several of President Joe Biden's nominees to head key U.S. agencies are selling stock holdings and pledging to seek ethics waivers if they have to oversee matters in which they have had personal interests, according to new filings with the Office of Government Ethics. Biden has asked federal employees to sign stepped-up ethics pledges, and said no family members will work in the White House. Multiple conflicts of interest emerged in the previous administration of Donald Trump. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen last week obtained a waiver from Treasury ethics lawyers before gathering top financial regulators to study price volatility in GameStop Corp and other stocks. Ivanka Trump has her own political agenda - and it does not include Marjorie Taylor Greene. Florida's newest resident is setting her sights on challenging Marco Rubio in the 2022 Senate race, sources say, and she is concerned that Donald's support of the controversial congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene could adversely affect her plans. Taylor Greene has expressed her belief in the QAnon conspiracy theory which is rich in anti-Semitism. She also signed an online posting in 2018 that accused Jewish billionaire George Soros and the Rothschild family of being involved in the conspiracy, which alleges that powerful figures run an international pedophile ring and influence world policy. 'Ivanka  is worried that people, including those in the Jewish community will automatically assume that she approves of Marjorie because of her dad's affiliation with her,' a Trump insider tells DailyMail.com.  'Donald just loves Marjorie and makes no secret about it. Maloney, who recently called for the FBI to investigate Parler in another letter last month, is pursuing Parler again. Her most recent letter, published Monday, insinuates that Parler is helping the Russian government, and provided a platform for Russian disinformation during the election. “Parler reportedly allowed Russian disinformation to flourish on its platform prior to the November 2020 election, facilitating Russia’s campaign to sow chaos in the American electorate. Although similar disinformation was removed by other social media platforms, it was allowed to remain on Parler,” the letter says. The letter continues, pointing out that after being removed by American web-hosting services, “Parler re-emerged on a Russian hosting service, DDos-Guard, which has ties to the Russian government.” #BREAKING: @OversightDems...

Amid the fallout from protracted trade wars and political conflicts between China, the United States and its allies, there stands a bright outlier. Last week, the small nation of New Zealand managed to cut a fresh trade deal with China, expanding the breadth of its more than decade-old free-trade agreement and reducing tariffs on nearly all of its exports to China to zero. Some have even argued that New Zealand could use its friendly relations with Beijing to serve as a mediator to help ease tensions between China and the other four other members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing coalition – the US, Australia, Canada and the UK. Others warn that such an effort would be fraught with difficulty, given the entrenched positions of all parties, and could easily backfire on Wellington. President Joe Biden’s newly appointed press secretary, Janet Yellen, is again coming under fire for her ties to Wall Street for taking $810,000 in speaking fees from Citadel, which has ties to hedge funds that have lost significant amounts of money in the GameStop surge. The renewed focus on the funding comes as Biden’s administration comes under scrutiny amid rumors that it was involved in the recent halt of GameStop trading to curb the losses of hedge funds. In a piece for Breitbart, columnist John Nolte argued that Yellen’s “speaking fees” were actually “bribes and payoffs.” The writer noted that Yellen allegedly earned more than $7 million in Wall Street speaking frees in just two years from over 50 virtual and in-person engagements. “The numbers are outrageous. Why would anyone drop hundreds of thousands of dollars to have some former fed chair come in to tell tired war stories and...
(CNN)The city of Philadelphia has cut ties with a Covid-19 vaccine provider, saying it lost "trust in them as an organization," after a slew of controversial moves by the group and its 22-year-old CEO, who admitted Thursday he took vaccine doses and administered them to four friends. Additionally, Philly Fighting COVID (PFC) unexpectedly shuttered its Covid-19 testing operations to focus on vaccine administration and changed from a nonprofit organization to a for-profit entity -- a shift the health department said it learned about from local news outlets.Concerns were also raised about changes to PFC's privacy policy that would allow it to sell patients' data collected through their online registration site, according to a report from a local news outlet."Trust is the most important thing we have when giving out vaccine, and we couldn't ask Philadelphians to trust an outfit that we no longer trusted," James Garrow, a spokesman for...
On Feb. 6, 2020, Timber Unity protesters showed up at the Oregon state capitol in Salem protesting a carbon cap-and-trade bill.Robin Loznak, Zuma Let our journalists help you make sense of the noise: Subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter and get a recap of news that matters. In March, my colleague Ali Breland and I wrote about a pro-logging, anti-climate group called Timber Unity that helped to scuttle Oregon legislation for cap-and-trade in 2019 and 2020. To the average Oregon voter, Timber Unity appeared to be an organic backlash fueled by frustrated rural voters in a state dominated by Democrats. The group’s rallies, which drew hundreds and sometimes thousands of truckers and loggers to the capitol, made it appear that it had broad support among Republican voters. But actually, Timber Unity was founded and bankrolled by the logging industry—specifically Andrew Miller, CEO of a timber company called Stimson Lumber. At Timber...
President Biden will nix Justice Department contracts with private prisons via an executive order that he will sign on Tuesday following last summer's racial unrest. Biden won the 2020 election, in part, due to his popularity among black Democrats. Now, he's tackling some of their concerns voiced loudly after the death of George Floyd, a black man killed by a white police officer last Memorial Day, including their worries about the federal prison and housing systems. There are concerns in minority communities that those systems, and others, are biased against them. Biden on Tuesday will take four executive actions, including one order directing Attorney General-designate Merrick Garland not to renew Justice Department contracts with privately operated criminal detention facilities. The order doesn't apply to those used by the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies. In a separate presidential memorandum, Biden will ask Housing and Urban Development Secretary-designate...

SACRAMENTO —  As the pandemic continues to shutter businesses, close schools and upend lives in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has become a target of angry frustration for some, driving a grassroots effort to recall him from office. What once started as a pipe dream is beginning to look like a political threat for the Democratic governor. But a Times investigation found that recall campaign leaders, seeking to capitalize on the darkening public mood, allied with radical and extreme elements early on to help collect signatures. Those included groups promoting distrust of government, science and medicine; peddlers of QAnon doomsday conspiracies; “patriots” readying for battle and one organization allied with the far-right extremist group, the Proud Boys. The recall gave those fringe factions a higher profile and a shared villain. They helped energize the campaign with large and often inflammatory rallies over masks, in support of Trump and against the...

Lawrence Brock with his zip ties at the ready. In an asinine display of credulousness, a Texas federal judge named Jeffrey Cureton decided that committed insurrectionist and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Lawrence Brock could spend the next few weeks at home drinking Coronas and watching Netflix instead of cooling his heels in jail for his part in terrorizing U.S. government officials during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. As reported by Forbes: A federal judge released Larry Rendall Brock Jr.— a former Air Force officer who carried zip-ties on the Senate floor during last week’s Capitol insurrection—from custody Thursday, despite the fact the FBI said he was radicalized and spoke of committing violence, as concerns loom about another insurrection attempt during President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. Brock was famously photographed in full combat gear carrying zip ties on the Senate floor. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, which argued for his continued...

A retired Air Force officer who was part of the MAGA mob that stormed the US Capitol last week carried plastic zip-tie handcuffs because he intended 'to take hostages' and even potentially 'execute' members of Congress, prosecutors say.  Retired Lt. Col. Larry Rendall Brock Jr, 53, was arrested last Sunday in Texas after being photographed on the Senate floor during the deadly riot wearing a helmet and heavy vest and carrying plastic zip-tie handcuffs. Brock, a father-of-three who lives in Dallas, was charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.  He appeared in court on Thursday in a light green jumpsuit, a mask and with shackles at his hands and feet. During the hearing, prosecutors said the zip ties were proof Brock had planned to take hostages during the siege.  'He means to take hostages. The United States will block cotton and tomato imports from China's Xinjiang region, which may have possible ties to Uighur slave labor. U.S. Customs and Border Protection made the announcement on Wednesday, warning that it believes products made in the Xinjiang region indicate the possible use of prison and forced labor. "CBP will not tolerate the Chinese government’s exploitation of modern slavery to import goods into the United States below fair market value," said CBP acting Commissioner Mark Morgan in a statement. "Imports made on the cheap by using forced labor hurt American businesses that respect human rights and also expose unsuspecting consumers to unethical purchases." All CBP personnel at U.S. ports of entry will now detain cotton and tomato products grown or produced in Xinjiang. The products could include apparel, textiles, canned tomatoes, seeds and sauce, and other goods made with cotton and tomatoes. China has faced growing...

After his first dialogue with Jair Bolsonaro and Joe Biden, Alberto Fernandez seeks to define a strategy with its main business partners After a year of pandemic, and glimpsing a still uncertain international scenario, marked by strategic competition between China and the US. It is essential to analyze the three most important bilateral relations for Argentina today: Brazil, USA and China. Recompose a crucial link After a year in the Casa Rosada, the news of the communication between Fernández and Bolsonaro was welcomed like a breath of fresh air. But, as the saying goes, una hirundo non facti ver, we will have to see how the relationship progresses in the new international scenario. Bolsonaro faces the displacement of his great international ally, Donald Trump, and his link with China is not at its best. For Fernández, on the other hand, the rise of Biden could generate new rules of the...

New York City is canceling Trump by ending its long-standing contracts for the iconic skating rinks in Central Park, the park carousel and Ferry Point Golf Course in the Bronx. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the move on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Wednesday.  The city holds three contracts with the Trump Organization which de Blasio said gives them a $17million annual profit.   It comes after Trump was disowned by the PGA, banned by big tech and ex-communicated by business leaders, many of whom have stopped donations to the GoP. There are growing calls for the President to resign.  Today, the House is expected to vote to impeach him over his role in the riot at the Capitol last week which resulted in five deaths and is expected to churn hundreds of arrests.  De Blasio, announcing his plan to end the contracts, said on Wednesday: 'The city of NY is severing all...

'We live in the age of cancel culture, but this isn't something that started this week,' said Eric, 37.  'It is something that they have been doing to us and others for years.'  Eric Trump Wednesday told the crowd: 'Show some fight,' urged them to 'march on the Capitol' Donald Trump (seen on Tuesday) is a victim of 'cancel culture', his son Eric said Eric, along with his brother, Donald Jr.,...
From the right: Biden’s Big Tech Ties President-elect Joe Biden is building an administration with ties to all five Big Tech firms that “clamped down this week on President Trump and Parler, a social-media site popular with conservatives,” reports the Daily Caller’s Chuck Ross. At least 14 of his picks to serve in government or advise his transition have worked for Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Google or Amazon; his chief National Security Council spokesperson will be a former Twitter exec. The “social-media purge” of Trump’s accounts and blacklisting of Parler have “stoked concerns that the major tech companies have too much control over communications platforms.” And “conservatives are especially concerned that they will be targeted even further under a Biden administration due to the tech companies’ closer ties to Democrats.” Conservative: Free Speech Trumps Markets It isn’t censorship when corporations do it. Deutsche Bank will reportedly do no future business with President Trump or his companies after protesters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday. The bank based in Frankfurt, Germany, is the president’s largest lender, the New York Times first reported, with $340 million in loans outstanding to the Trump Organization. Deutsche Bank and the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The report comes as another bank where Trump holds checking and money-market accounts called on him to step down. “The resignation of the president ... is in the best interests of our nation and the American people,” Signature Bank said on its website. Trump has received significant condemnation and pushback following the siege of the Capitol, with Twitter and Facebook banning him from their platforms, Democrats launching an impeachment effort, and other organizations cutting ties with him and his administration. WASHINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A Texas man, identified as Larry Rendell Brock, who was allegedly seen holding zip ties inside the Senate Chamber of the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 assault has been arrested and charged, the Department of Justice announced Sunday. Officials said in a news release that Brock was arrested in Texas on Sunday and was charged with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or ground without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. Brock was allegedly wearing a green helmet, a green tactical vest, a black camo jacket and was holding white flex cuffs that are usually used by law enforcement to restrain or detain subjects, officials said. Another man, Eric Gavelek Munchel of Tennessee, was also arrested on Sunday and faced the same charges. The New Yorker reports Brock is an Air Force veteran who...
The MAGA rioter pictured carrying zip-ties and wearing full paramilitary gear has been identified as a Nashville bartender who stormed the Capitol with his mother.  Eric Munchel, 30, has been named as the man pictured in the Senate press gallery with a bundle of flex-cuffs, heavy duty restraints used by law enforcement in mass arrests on Wednesday. He told The Times of London: 'We wanted to show that we’re willing to rise up, band together and fight if necessary. Same as our forefathers, who established this country in 1776. It was a kind of flexing of muscles.' His mom, Lisa Eisenhart, 57, said: 'The left has everything: the media, organisations, the government. We have to organise if we’re going to fight back and be heard.' The nurse, who wore a bullet proof vest like her son, added: 'This country was founded on revolution. If they’re going to take every legitimate means from...
The FBI is investigating whether any of President Donald Trump's supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol were conspiring to hurt lawmakers or take them hostage, according to a new report.  Already, dozens have been arrested over the January 6 riot, but the FBI is now looking at whether there was a deeper plot to kidnap or harm members of Congress, sources told the Washington Post. 'We're not looking at this as a grand conspiracy, but we are interested in learning what people would do with things like zip ties,' said one law enforcement official. At least two mob members were spotted on the Senate floor carrying zip-tie handcuffs, while another was caught with a pistol on the Capitol grounds. The MAGA mob rioter dressed in combat gear and carrying zip ties has been identified as a Texas Air Force veteran whose family say has developed extreme beliefs and started speaking 'weird rage talk' since leaving the force. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Larry Rendall Brock Jr., 53, was among the violent mob of Donald Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol Wednesday in a riot that left five including one police officer dead. The father-of-three, who now lives in Dallas, was pictured on the Senate floor Wednesday after the group had broken through barricades, pushed back law enforcement and sent lawmakers fleeing for safety.  Images show him wearing a combat helmet, body armor and a vinyl tag with the Punisher skull on - a symbol adopted by white supremacists and believers of conspiracy theory QAnon. Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who famously fist-pumped the crew of insurgents that brought riots to our nation’s capitol on Tuesday, has been the focus of well-deserved heat from the public, as well as from his colleagues. Just a day later, Hawley’s former mentor and champion claims their relationship is the “biggest mistake” of his life. The Kansas City Star’s editorial board puts direct responsibility on Hawley’s shoulders for the bloodshed during Wednesday’s coup d’etat attempt on the legislature, writing that he has “blood on his hands.”  Later on Thursday, activists began pressuring publisher Simon & Schuster, demanding it cut ties with the only other senator to be considered as loathsome as Sen. Ted Cruz. Within hours, Simon & Schuster did cut ties and cancel publication of The Tyranny of Big Tech—in direct response to public outcry, if you believe Hawley himself, who cried a big crybaby fit in a tweet he called his “statement on the woke mob at @simonschuster.” In...
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Qataris awoke to a surprise blockade and boycott by Gulf Arab neighbors 3 1/2 years ago, and this week were jolted again by the sudden announcement that it was all over. The period in between was bitter, with mud-slinging by both sides and viscous media blitzes, social media trolling, expensive lobbying efforts in Washington, and allegations of hacks and leaks. Criticism of the boycott was a criminal offense in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt as the four sought to punish Qatar. Qatar’s resolve in the face of the assault showed how little the campaign achieved as the small, but influential U.S. ally holds firm with its ties to Turkey, Iran and Islamists. “In terms of foreign policy, the international relations of the blockade, Qatar didn’t have to change much because the blockade was on such shaky ground to start,” said...

Sexton makes Cavs history Collin Sexton made history in the Cavaliers’ win against the Atlanta Hawks. Sexton became the first Cavaliers player to record 20 points in his first six opening games since LeBron James in 2004-05. Sexton now joins LeBron James, Austin Carr and Bingo Smith as the only Cavaliers players to achieve this feat. Sexton’s first few games have put him in rarified Cavaliers’ air. He has shown that he is one of the brightest young prospects in the NBA today. Over his past 6 games, Sexton has averaged 26 points...

By Ahmed Eljechtimi and Ari Rabinovitch RABAT/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel and Moroccan Jews on Friday celebrated an agreement to normalise relations between the two countries, but the largest party in Morocco's government faced internal wrangling over a move that some Moroccans regard as a betrayal of Palestinians. The U.S.-brokered deal - the fourth such "normalisation" announcement involving an Arab country and Israel in as many months - also drew criticism from Moscow. A core element of the deal brokered by President Donald Trump was U.S. recognition of Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over the Western Sahara. A decades-old territorial dispute has pitted Morocco against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks to establish an independent state. Russia's foreign ministry said the U.S. decision to recognise Moroccan sovereignty was a breach of international law, the RIA news agency reported. Winning global support for its claim over Western Sahara is Morocco's most important foreign...
When PornHub was hit with claims that it is hosting child rape videos on its site earlier this week, prompting Visa and Mastercard to cut ties with the site, its reign as the world's leading porn website was plunged into sudden uncertainty.   While the website is ubiquitous, little is known about its owners and operators or how much it is worth.  They are Stephane Manos, Ouissam Youssef, Feras Antoon and Matt Keezer, who founded the site in 2007, two years after YouTube was founded, in Montreal, Quebec.  They all knew each other for years earlier while attending Concordia University and had a shared love of the internet and pornography.   Antoon is the only one who retains a formal active role as the CEO of PornHub's parent company MindGeek.  MindGeek is a private company whose headquarters are now in Luxembourg. It has more than 1,200 employees.   It's unclear who came up with...

Two large credit card companies are reexamining their business relationship with pornography website Pornhub. Pornhub, which is owned by MindGeek, a large conglomerate that owns many different porn sites, called the claims “irresponsible and flagrantly untrue." “We are aware of the allegations, and we are actively engaging with the relevant financial institutions to investigate, in addition to engaging directly with the site’s parent company, MindGeek,” Visa told the Associated Press in a statement. Visa added that if the company found Pornhub was in violation of the law or bank policies, the site would be barred from using Visa payments. Mastercard...

By PAN PYLAS, Associated Press LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the European Union's top official are set to discuss the state of play of post-Brexit trade discussions later Saturday after negotiators paused talks in light of their inability to bridge an array of differences. With the discussions stuck over the same issues for months, Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU's executive European Commission, will see if there is a route to a deal. With the U.K.'s post-Brexit transition period due to conclude at the end of the year, the discussions are clearly facing a crunch point, not least because of the necessary approvals required from both sides. Without an agreement in place, tariffs will end up being imposed on traded goods at the start of 2021. Months of negotiations have produced agreement on a swath of issues, but serious differences remain...

Doug Collins, who he claimed received over 50% of the vote in their election. Collins in fact received 20% of the vote in the election, putting him in third place behind Loeffler, who received 25.9% of the vote, and Democrat Raphael Warnock, who received 32.9% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.
