An estimated 4,300 Californians got the wrong dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, whistleblowers have revealed.  Workers at the Oakland Coliseum mass vaccination site told FOX2 KTVU that they were sent a type of syringe that traps a small portion of vaccine in its plastic chamber from the national stockpile.  Usually, these syringes leave about .05 mL to 0.1 mL of vaccine stuck in the plunger.  The correct dose of Pfizer vaccine is 0.3 mL - so the Monday morning patients probably got about two-thirds of that, or 0.2mL.  It's unclear exactly how many people received the lower dose, but one of the EMTs who revealed the short-dosing to KTVU said as many as 4,300 doses might have been given out before the problem was discovered.  Oakland's vaccination site was giving out the Pfizer shot on Monday. At the correct dosage, two shots are about 95 percent effective, but...

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A northeast Kansas county health department canceled its Tuesday clinic for giving COVID-19 vaccines because of below-zero winter temperatures. The Shawnee County Health Department in Topeka also cited the possibility of rolling electricity blackouts in canceling the clinic at Agriculture Hall, an older exhibition building near the city's largest arena and convention center. Evergy, the electric provider for Topeka, later announced that blackouts used to limit the demand on its system had been suspended Tuesday morning. Spokesman Craig Barnes said the county health department will open its planned vaccination clinic Thursday three hours early to allow people who'd planned to get shots Tuesday to still get them. Frigid temperatures slowed the second phase of the state's vaccination distribution, which covers people over 65, as well as teachers, workers critical to the economy and people in group living situations, including prison inmates. The news comes three weeks after the hospital faced backlash for allowing teachers and staff at an affluent Los Gatos school district to skip the line for COVID-19 vaccines by pretending to be health care workers. The story, first reported by San Jose Spotlight, generated widespread outcry and led to the county withholding future vaccine doses from the hospital. As COVID-19 vaccines remain hard to come by, it was a major relief for those who booked an appointment. “It feels amazing,” said Jaimie Rennie of South Park. “I tried about 10 places and then when I found out about this clinic, I signed up.” Spartan Pharmacy has two locations in Pittsburgh and one in Bethel Park. Appointments opened on its website Friday night for those in Phase 1A of Pennsylvania’s vaccine rollout plan. Pharmacy manager Jodi Mitchell says tens of thousands of people tried to grab one of the 2,000 spots. The response overwhelmed the website quickly. “We filled up all the spots,”...

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle hospitals rushed out COVID-19 vaccines to hundreds of people in the middle of the night after a freezer they were being stored in failed. It’s not clear what caused the freezer failure Thursday night, but the UW Medical Center’s Northwest and Montlake campuses and Swedish Medical Center received more than 1,300 doses that needed to be used before they expired at 5:30 a.m. Friday, The Seattle Times reported. Word of the unexpected doses spread on social media, and a line of hopeful vaccine recipients snaked out the clinic door and through a parking lot at UW Medical Center-Northwest. A hundred people lined up at Swedish Medical Center’s clinic at Seattle University. The hospital tweeted at 11:59 p.m. that it had 588 doses to give out, and by 12:30 a.m., all the appointment slots had been taken. At the UW Medical Center-Northwest, assistant administrator Jenny Brackett walked...
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Three hours after closing time on Friday, workers at Kedren Community Care Clinic in South Los Angeles were still working — giving out extra doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to anyone who walked in. “I refuse to let any drop go to waste,” Dr. Jerry Abraham, family physician and epidemiologist for Kedren Health, said. The clinic has become a model of the success, and the mess, of vaccine distribution in Southern California. Each day, hundreds of people with appointments get their shots, and hundreds more without reservations line up hoping to get any leftovers at the end of the day. Most days, there are not any extras to give out, but on Friday it was a bonanza  after several local nursing homes suddenly offered 600 extra doses just hours before closing time. “Right now, I will not let this expiring vaccine go to waste, is...
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Hundreds of seniors lined up in the rain Thursday morning to secure their spot at Santa Clara County's first COVID-19 walk-up vaccination site. The scene at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in East San Jose, an area hit hardest by the pandemic, illustrated the high demand for the vaccine."My mom's 92 and she's got diabetes, and she lives in a multi-family home, so these are really important factors," said Elizabeth Robledo, who brought her parents to the plaza. "I just called them last night and they said, 'yeah, let's go!'"VACCINE TRACKER: How California is doing, when you can get a coronavirus vaccineThe vaccine clinic, which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, is operated by Gardner Health Services in partnership with the county. Healthcare workers and those over the age of 65 are currently eligible to get vaccinated."It kind of takes a load off your mind about...
A health clinic in Ecuador has been caught administering fake COVID vaccines to tens of thousands of patients. Quito security chief César Díaz told reporters that the bogus facility had treated at least 70,000 patients who were charged $15 for each of the three doses they were required to take. He said patients were told they would be immune to the deadly virus once they had received all three doses.  Díaz said that Quito health officials do not know what type of formula was injected into each of the patients who were treated at the facility - which has not been identified.  A video that appears to have been recorded by an undercover agent shows Dr. Lucía Peñafiel, who was in charge of the site's operation, not wearing while treating a patient because she claimed she and her staff 'are protected.'  A patient receives treatment at a clandestine clinic that...
GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- Oregon health workers who got stuck in a snowstorm on their way back from a COVID-19 vaccination event went car to car injecting stranded drivers before several of the doses expired.Josephine County Public Health said on Facebook that the "impromptu vaccine clinic" took place after about 20 employees were stopped in traffic on a highway after a vaccination clinic.Six of the vaccines were getting close to expiring so the workers decided to offer them to other stranded drivers. The shots were meant for other people, but "the snow meant those doses wouldn't make it to them before they expired," the health department said. Not wanting to waste them, staff walked from vehicle to vehicle, offering people a chance to receive the vaccine. A county ambulance was on hand for safety. All the doses were administered, including one to a Josephine County Sheriff's Office employee who had arrived too late...
