Bradley Cortright February 18, 2021 0 Comments Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is back in his home state after a brief trip to Cancun as thousands were without power in Texas, which ignited a firestorm on social media. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) says there is one way the Texas senator could have avoided the controversy while still taking a trip to Cancun. “If Sen. Cruz had resigned back in January after helping gin up a violent insurrection that killed several people, he could’ve taken his vacation in peace. Texans should continue to demand his resignation,” she wrote on Twitter. She added, “But don’t blame me for this, my points are on Amtrak!” If Sen. JOE Biden on Thursday night said he’s never “taken a penny from any foreign source” – as he called Rudy Giuliani a “Russian pawn” over the Hunter Biden email scandal. The Post was given a copy of the hard drive by Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, who Biden said on Thursday “is being used as a Russian pawn.” The article reported about an alleged “smoking gun email” Hunter received from Vadym Pozharskyi, an...

CORONA shaming in our unappealing “new normal” has become so common that it’s losing any effectiveness. Glares for not wearing your mask while standing outside, jabs for coming a touch too close lining up for lunch and now judgmental sneering at folk who decide to go on holiday — whisper it — overseas. ⚠️ Read our coronavirus live blog for the latest news & updates 11I am proud to 'confess' that I have been on two foreign holidays in the past month, utilising legal air bridgesCredit: AFP - DPA Well I’m done with that nonsense. I am proud to “confess” that I have been on two foreign holidays in the past month, utilising legal air bridges, and I am far from ashamed. The myth in coronaphobic Britain is that overseas trips are for the elite, rich and powerful: If you dare get on a plane to low infection-rate locales such...
I was reading a community diary story today that you really should read, if you haven’t already, about the writer’s experience taking the cognitive assessment test. I have had difficulty processing Donald Trump’s answer regarding this matter to Fox News in a way that I hadn’t really come to terms with until reading that diary and thinking about how it made me feel. I had my first MOCA test years after rehab recovering from a violent crime assault, and, unfortunately, since then for the past 25 years, I’ve had a version of this test given to me with decreasing regularity. The point of a cognitive test isn’t to “ace” it or prove how much of a smart person you are: The point is to track whether or not you are experiencing a negative trend in your ability to function, which can be caused by time, disability, or even medication. As the president bragged about his test results,...
"DSC03743e-sw" by HotlantaVoyeur is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0By Saturday afternoon, even those whose lives are anathema to everything John Lewis fought for were tweeting his praises—or trying to. Republican senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Dan Sullivan of Alaska earned the internet’s mockery by posting photos of themselves with Elijah Cummings, a different recently deceased Black congressman. Less embarrassing but more cynical was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s tweet that he “will never forget joining hands with John as Congress sang We Shall Overcome at a 2008 ceremony honoring his friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” Last year, the House passed a bill to modernize the Voting Rights Act, restoring a requirement, struck down by the Supreme Court in 2013, that states with histories of racial discrimination receive preclearance from a federal judge before changing their voting or election laws. Securing the right to vote was a central...
