(AP) — One of two pilots who were killed when a small plane crashed near Janesville reported engine issues and asked to land before the plane went down, according to a preliminary federal report. The Feb. 16 crash killed Remington Viney, a staff sergeant with the Wisconsin Air National Guard, and Tanner Byholm, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Saturday. The National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report said the Velocity V-twin, which is described as an experimental, amateur-built airplane, departed from Appleton International Airport on the morning of the crash and was bound for Florida. The plane landed at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport to fuel up.     Golfer Tiger Woods was hospitalized on Tuesday after being involved in a single-vehicle accident in Los Angeles, police said. The vehicle sustained major damage and Woods was extricated from the wreck with the "jaws of life" by firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department said in a statement. The Associated Press quoted the golf stars manager as saying Woods suffered multiple leg injuries and was undergoing surgery. Police responded to a roll-over traffic collision at approximately 7:12 a.m. local time and said a traffic investigation was being conducted, the department said. The 45-year-old American had hosted the annual Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club over the weekend but did not compete due to ongoing issues with his surgically-repaired back.     Two people are dead and four others injured after a crash involving two vehicles on the Suitland Parkway in Prince George’s County, Maryland, early Tuesday morning. U.S. Park Police officers responded at 12:40 a.m. to the eastbound Suitland Parkway after Branch Avenue, for a crash between a Mitsubishi sedan and an Acura MDX SUV. Two adults in the Mitsubishi — a man and a woman — were pronounced dead at the scene. Four others involved in the crash were transported to a hospital with injuries evaluated as non-life threatening. The identities of the victims have not been made public as of Tuesday morning.     ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) — Four people, including a young child and teenager, have died in a traffic crash outside Chicago, according to Illinois State Police. The crash happened late Saturday evening in Rolling Meadows. All four people who died were in the same vehicle, a blue 2019 Ford Fiesta that had stopped on the right side of the road before it was struck by a black 2018 Jeep. Killed were two women, ages 47 and 45, a 17-year-old boy and a six-year boy. Further details were not immediately released. Troopers were called just after 11:30 p.m. to investigate a two-vehicle collision. The driver of the jeep suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.     Two people were injured following a five-vehicle crash on I-95 in Westchester. It happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, on I-95 northbound in Mamaroneck, New York State Trooper Tara McCormick said. According to McCormick, a tractor-trailer came upon slowing traffic and attempted to switch lanes, as he changed lanes the truck hit four passenger vehicles. The crash closed the right lane of traffic for about two hours, but has reopened, she said. The two people were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, McCormick added.     SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A pedestrian in a crosswalk was hit and killed in a multiple vehicle crash near Lake Merced in San Francisco Thursday. Police said the crash happened at around 8 a.m. at Lake Merced Boulevard at Higuera Ave. on the western edge of San Francisco State University. Eight cars were involved in the crash, with one of the vehicles colliding with a man in his 20s. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Four other people who were inside vehicles were injured in the crash and were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, including a driver in his 30s or 40s suspected of causing the crash, police said.     CHICAGO (CBS) — A driver was critically injured Tuesday night when he crashed into three other vehicles while fleeing a traffic stop in Aurora. Two others were injured in the crash. Police said officers pulled over a Mazda sedan around 9 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of McCoy Drive and Eola Road. After officers approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, the man sped away and crashed into three other vehicles at the intersection of McCoy and Autumn Lake drives. The driver and passenger in the Mazda were pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated from the car. The driver was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable, condition.     Glen Rock police were helping a disabled motorist on Route 208 late one recent afternoon when they spotted a Jeep headed toward them passing traffic on the shoulder. Seeing them, the driver quickly tried to return to a legal lane, they said. With their vehicles blocking traffic to protect the stranded car, the officers stopped the Jeep driver -- and found that he was drunk, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said. Gavin Walsh, 52, of Hawthorne was taken into custody after the 3:50 p.m. incident on the southbound highway near Lincoln Avenue, the chief said. His vehicle was towed and impounded for at least 12 hours, Ackermann said. Police charged Walsh with DWI and gave him summonses for careless driving and improper passing before releasing him to a responsible family member, pending a court hearing, under John’s Law.  
    A man is dead after a car hit him on Interstate 95 in Howard County, Maryland. It happened around 5:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway just before Route 32. The man was struck after he got into a minor two-car crash. He got out of his car to take pictures and that’s when he was hit by a third vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.     LIGHTHOUSE POINT (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff’s Office have identified two drivers who were killed in a fiery collision in Lighthouse Point early Saturday morning, which was caught on camera. BSO deputies and Lighthouse Point police responded to a two-vehicle crash at Northeast 49th Street and North Federal Highway shortly before 1:30 a.m. on January 23. Preliminary investigation revealed that Dana Raymond, 34 of Coral Springs, was traveling southbound in a 2017 Kia Optima on North Federal Highway when she struck a 2011 Hyundai Tucson driven by Justin Waldron, 38 of Lighthouse Point.     ANTIOCH — A 25-year-old Oakland woman was killed early Sunday morning when her vehicle plunged off State Route 160 causing her to be ejected, the California Highway Patrol said. Her name has not yet been released. The fatality happened at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday The CHP said the woman was driving alone in a black Hyundai Elantra northbound on State route 160 when as it neared Main Street the vehicle veered off the roadway and collided into the center concrete divider guardrail before plunging down onto Main Street.  The woman died at the scene. The CHP said the death remains under investigation but did note that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the crash.     Several people were injured in D.C. late Thursday after a car crashed head-on into a Metrobus in Northeast. The crash occurred just before midnight on Minnesota Avenue near Benning Road, a DC Fire and EMS spokesman said. The car driver was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition. Multiple bus passengers were also transported to hospitals but are expected to be OK, the spokesman told WTOP.     CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 13-year-old girl is dead and at least four other have been injured in a head-on crash late Wednesday night in Garfield Ridge on Chicago's Southwest Side.The driver of a Chevy Impala was seen speeding past traffic along the median of Cicero Avenue before crashing into a Cadillac Escalade near 50th Street. The head-on collision caused a third vehicle to also crash with the Escalade in an apparent chain-reaction.The teen who died was in the Escalade.     A passenger was killed in a crash Friday near the George Washington Bridge tolls, authorities said. Both the driver and passenger were found unconscious, requiring extrication and CPR, after the eastbound vehicle landed on top of the median on the New Jersey side of the bridge’s lower level shortly before 3 p.m., they said. The passenger died and the driver was being treated at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights, Port Authority spokeswoman Lenis Valens said.Port Authority police, the NYPD and the FDNY were among the responders, she said. "Traffic was infused into one lane and there was a traffic diversion plan in place on the NJ side," Valens said. "Traffic resumed normal operations around 5:50 p.m." An investigation was continuing, she said.

    GRAND COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Part of Berthoud Pass was closed Sunday afternoon for a deadly crash. Colorado State Patrol troopers say two vehicles crashed near mile marker 245. Several people were extricated and taken to the hospital with critical injuries, CSP says. Eastbound traffic was re-routed onto US 40 to Kremmling and then CO 9 to Silverthorne. Westbound traffic used CO 9 to Kremmling and then US 40. Details about the victim have not been released. It’s not clear when the closure will be lifted.
    A man is dead after driving off the roadway and overturning off Saint Barnabas Road in Temple Hills, Maryland, early Sunday morning. Prince George’s County police responded to a crash involving a single car near the intersection of Saint Barnabas Road and 28th Avenue at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday.     PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It was a rough morning for drivers trying to get into the city of Pittsburgh on Friday. Crashes on Route 65 and Route 28 caused massive delays. A jack-knifed tractor trailer shut down Route 65 around 5:30 on Friday morning. According to Allegheny County Dispatch, more than 100 gallons of gasoline were spilled in the crash. Crews were forced to lay out sheets to soak up the spill. Traffic had to be rerouted away from the McKees Rocks Bridge, a vital link for morning commuters.     OAKLAND — A 69-year-old man who died Dec. 10  after he was hit by a car while crossing a street in the city’s Grand Lake district was identified by the coroner’s office Thursday as Wayne Sanders. Authorities said he lived in the area. Sanders suffered fatal injuries about 5:36 p.m. Dec. 10 in the 3700 block of Grand Avenue. Police said he started walking from the sidewalk onto the street and was outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle that was going southbound on Grand Avenue.  He died later at a hospital. The woman driving the vehicle remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators, authorities said. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. (AP) — A truck driver who caused a chain-reaction crash along a northeastern Indiana highway that killed a Michigan couple and another person will not face criminal charges in that crash, a prosecutor said.     SAN ANTONIO – A major crash involving at least an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck has snarled traffic during the Monday evening commute on the city’s South Side.     GARDENA (CBSLA) — A motorist struck and killed a pedestrian in a crash in the Gardena area on Saturday. Gardena police responded to the 16900 block of Normandie Avenue just after 6 p.m. following a report of the collision. When they arrived, they located the pedestrian, who was seriously injured. He was taken to the hospital where he died. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation. The identity of the pedestrian has not yet been revealed.     A 28-year-old Martinez woman died Thursday night after being hit by a car while walking through lanes of traffic, the California Highway Patrol said. The woman was not identified early Friday, pending notification of her next of kin. She died at the scene. According to a CHP statement, the collision happened on Pacheco Boulevard at Wygal Drive around 5:20 p.m. The vehicle that hit her was a Chevrolet pickup truck, and the driver spoke with authorities, the CHP said. Fewer cars on the road this year led to fewer accidents, however, a CBS 11 I-Team analysis of state crash data found a “surprising” and deadly trend. While the number of crashes are down, the number of people killed on the roads in North Texas has gone up. Since March in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton counties, 480 people have been killed on roads according to state crash records.     A bicyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in the area. The incident took place around 6:20 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21 in Dutchess County on Route 55 (Manchester Road) at the intersection of Burnett Boulevard, in the town of Poughkeepsie Police. During the incident, a black Nissan Titan, driven by a 51-year-old male resident of Lagrangeville, collided with a bicycle, ridden by a 58-year-old male resident of Poughkeepsie, in the area of the crosswalk on the southeast portion of the intersection, said the Town of Poughkeepsie Police. The bicyclist sustained serious injuries and was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital.  A portion of Route 55 was closed while the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit investigated the scene. It happened on 93 South just before the entrance to the O’Neill Tunnel. Injuries were reported, but it was not immediately clear how serious they are. As of 8:30 a.m. only one lane of traffic was getting by the crash, which crews were working to clear.     BROOKLINE (KDKA) — Sunday is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. A ghost bike sits to remember 22-year-old Austin Fike. He was hit and killed by a drunk driver in October of 2019 and left behind a son and a fiancé. “He was just absolutely amazing,” Fike’s older sister Haley said. His family and loved ones stood in the Sunday morning drizzle at the intersection where he was killed. They wore hoodies with his picture and embraced in each other’s love. Parkway near the on-ramp from Powder Mill Road. The Parkway is closed between Powder Mill Road and Md. 197. Those who are already on the B.W. Parkway are being diverted onto Powder Mill Road toward Interstate 97, where they will be .able to get back onto the parkway.     SAN JOSE — At least one person is dead after a car crash early Tuesday morning in North San Jose, authorities said. San Jose police are investigating a “traffic fatality,” which they said occurred at about 3:43 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Brokaw and Zanker roads, just east of Highway 101 and San Jose International Airport. Police expected traffic to be impacted throughout the morning as they investigate the scene of the crash, though they did not specify the number of cars involved or the condition of anybody else involved in the crash.     MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (CBS) — Two crashes happened in succession in Mount Prospect Sunday morning, and one of them left a police officer injured. The second accident that left the officer injured happened around 8 a.m. Police were already blocking eastbound traffic after an accident at Dempster Street and Algonquin Road when a driver hit the officer’s sport-utility vehicle. The driver said the sun was in his eyes and he did not see the officer’s vehicle. The officer was taken to an area hospital. It was not known late Sunday how severely the officer was hurt.  
    CHICAGO (CBS) — The two left northbound lanes of the Edens Expressway near Wilson Avenue were closed to traffic Saturday morning just before 9 a.m. due to a fatal traffic crash. Around 5:30 a.m. a white Dodge Ram traveling north on Interstate 94 lost control and struck the concrete median wall, Illinois State Police said. A 38-year-old man died in the crash.
    State police are asking the public's help in the investigation of a fatal crash on a stretch of Route 15. It happened south of Exit 64 in Wallingford at around 6:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. The operator of a motorcycle lost control on the southbound side and separated from the motorcycle, state police said. The motorcycle came to rest in the travel portion of the unlit highway and was then struck by oncoming traffic, according to police. Michael Paul Nacca, 33, of Bethany, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, said police.     SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Traffic is backing up severely along northbound Highway 99 in Sacramento after a crash early Monday morning. The crash happened just before 6 a.m. near the Fruitridge Road offramp. Traffic is now backing up past Florin Road.     HAYWARD — A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 580 created a long traffic backup in the eastbound direction Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said. The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic following the crash. It first was reported at 8:23 a.m. and was blocking the far two left lanes just west of the Redwood Road exit.     SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — Authorities say one person was killed and four others were hurt in a three-car crash near North Highlands early Wednesday morning. Just before the crash, California Highway Patrol says deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department had tried to pull over an Audi along Auburn Boulevard, west of Watt Avenue. The Audi sped up Watt Avenue and went out of sight of deputies. A couple minutes later, around 1:20 a.m., that Audi then crashed into two other vehicles the intersection of Watt and Myrtle avenues. CHP says a passenger in the Audi was killed in the crash; the driver also suffered major injuries. The occupants of the other two vehicles hit suffered only minor injuries, officers say.     MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A rollover crash Wednesday morning has reduced traffic to one lane in both directions on Interstate 694 in the northeast metro. MnDOT traffic cameras show the crash happened where the interstate meets Highway 36, near Pine Springs. A car appears to have rolled into the median. It’s yet unclear if anyone was hurt. Crews are working to clear the scene, and traffic has been reduced to one lane in both directions. MnDOT says it expects the interstate will be at least partially closed until the mid-morning hours.     Seven people are injured and a section of the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway is closed after a crash Sunday night near Chevy Chase, Maryland, officials said.     RICHMOND — A 23-year-old San Pablo man was killed in a traffic crash Friday morning, authorities said. He was identified by the coroner’s office as Daniel Lopez. The crash happened at about 1:10 a.m. Friday on Richmond Parkway near Hilltop Drive, police said. Police said Lopez was apparently speeding when his vehicle went out of control and crashed, ending up on its roof and causing him to be ejected onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating if another vehicle possibly played a role in the crash, Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said. Check back for updates.  
    SAN JOSE — A 76-year-old man has died from injuries he suffered a month ago in a collision where a driver swerved into a bike lane while trying to pass another vehicle on Blossom Hill Road, according to San Jose police. The victim, who police said died Tuesday, has not formally identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. His death marks the city’s 41st traffic death of the year — and the fourth in as many days — and he was the fifth bicyclist killed on a city roadway in 2020.     A Sussex County man was drunk when he drove into oncoming traffic on Route 46 with a flat tire, authorities charged. Shawn B. Hirschel, 28, was seen driving west on Route 46 in the eastbound lane, head-on into oncoming traffic with a flat front tire just after 11 p.m. Sunday, Washington Township Police Lt. Mark Niemynski said. Police stopped the vehicle near East Avenue and determined that Hirschel was intoxicated, authorities said. Hirschel, of Hamburg, was arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he was charged with DWI, reckless driving, failure to submit breath samples, failure to report a motor vehicle crash, leaving the scene of a crash and several traffic infractions. Hirschel was released to a responsible adult and is scheduled to appear in Washington Township Municipal Court.
    SEAL BEACH (CBSLA) — A Huntington Beach man faces charges of hit-and-run and DUI after police say he hit a Seal Beach police officer who was conducting a traffic stop. The officer, who was not identified, was conducting a traffic stop in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Mariner Drive at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday. He was standing near his parked patrol car when it was rear-ended by a Ford F-150 going southbound on PCH, police said. The impact knocked the officer to the ground and he sustained “moderate injuries,” police said. A passing Seal Beach police volunteer witnessed the crash and stopped to help the officer and radioed for assistance. The officer was later taken to a hospital.     NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – An 18-wheeler rollover crash is causing significant delays for drivers, a partial road closure on I-35 and has left one person hospitalized, according to New Braunfels police. The crash happened Saturday morning on I-35, near Highway 46 South. Officials say most of I-35 is now closed in the area. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near the Fruitridge Rd. on-ramp. No injuries were reported, but vehicles involved in the crash blocked the right three lanes.
