Detroit jump started their hopeful turnaround with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, and while the victory seemed a bit hollow considering the opposition, it might only be the beginning for the team considering the schedule they are set to play. Breer wrote: “The Lions might be feisty from here. At 2–3, they’re a game out of the NFC playoff picture and their schedule softens up over the next few weeks (at Atlanta, Indianapolis, at...

He describes being essentially placed in solitary confinement for nearly three weeks after being exposed to another detainee with the disease, frequent moves from pod to pod, low-level criminals being housed with the most dangerous accused felons as authorities scramble for quarantine spaces, and guards who tend to only don facial coverings to shut up men in custody screaming at them to mask up. Between the federal government and the Federal Reserve, about $10 trillion has been pumped into the US economy to prevent a pandemic-fueled economic collapse. Judging by the stock market, you would think we’ve sidestepped a 2008-size disaster. But stocks, at least in the short run, are rarely a good indication of what’s festering inside the US economy. A better oracle is certain aspects of the bond market, particularly those that are tied to real estate. And just like in the prelude to the 2008 collapse, when the stock market was at all-time highs, this particular market is signaling a warning sign that the economy is headed for trouble. In 2008, the canary in the coal mine was declining residential real estate prices that failed to catch the attention of most market participants before it was too late because of a number of factors, including Fed easing. (Sound familiar?) Now...

We should not confuse law with policy.  As a matter of policy, I have supported gay rights. I opposed initiatives in California to prohibit gay marriage. I publicly criticized a proposal by the Bush administration (in which I served) of a constitutional amendment to nationally bar gay marriage as well. But Bostock v. Clayton County, decided Monday by the Supreme Court, is not truly about the policy virtues of banning discrimination against gays, It is about the right constitutional way for the American people to turn their evolving views into law. The American system of constitutional federalism reserves to state governments and private civil society certain fundamental decisions, aside from the protections for individual rights in the Bill of Rights and the Reconstruction amendments. Americans can deliberate over rights through a democratic political process, one that allows for experimentation, competition, and ultimately evolution that will represent a broad social consensus.
