The NYPD is still guarding monuments of Christopher Columbus 24/7 across New York City as a Republican council member has said they must be protected from 'psychotic leftists' wanting to tear them down over 'a 400-year-old historical squabble'. Police vehicles and barricades were still visible around at least five monuments in Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Queens this week around nine months after officers first set up guard around monuments amid racial justice protests.  It is not clear how much the round the clock protection for the statues is costing the Big Apple but it comes as New York state is grappling with a $15 billion budget deficit. Statues, flags and displays of Confederate or racist symbols and historical figures have been taken down or toppled across America in recent months, amid widespread protests calling for an end to systemic racism following the death of black man George Floyd.  An officer...
The Senate has voted to give the Congressional Gold Medal to Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Police officer who led a violent mob away from the Senate doors on January 6 as they hunted for lawmakers during the presidential electoral count. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the vote at the end of the day's impeachment proceedings, noting Goodman's 'foresight in the midst of chaos, and his willingness to make himself a target of the mob's rage so that others might reach safety.' The Senate voted to award Goodman the medal - the highest honor Congress can bestow - by unanimous consent.  Goodman, 40, has also been promoted to Acting Deputy House Sergeant-at-Arms.  Senators and staff give a standing ovation to U.S. Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman Goodman was awarded on Friday the highest Congressional honor for his bravery Goodman was in the Senate chamber as Schumer spoke, and...
Suffering a mass exodus of staff, Prince Andrew’s [email protected] charity looks to be on the verge of an utter collapse thanks to the ongoing scandal of his connections to the late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, The Express reports. Royal expert Russell Myers has insisted that the company, which connects wealthy investors to tech start-ups, will remain “toxic” to staffers so long as Prince Andrew lives under the dark cloud of Epstein. Over the past year, as Epstein-related headlines have continued to plague Prince Andrew, Johan Eliasch, a billionaire pal of Prince Andrew, quit the company along with 15 staff members.  Andrew, who was forced into early retirement from royal duties over his connection to Epstein, has only seen his troubles worsen over the past year. He faces questions over his connections to Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite and alleged former madam to the House of Epstein Horrors awaiting a...
People who have already been infected with coronavirus are as protected as people who’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19 for at least the first five months after infection, a study found, according to numerous sources. Public Health England (PHE) carried out the largest study in the world so far, regularly surveying 20,000 healthcare workers in the U.K. between June and November 2020. Of the total surveyed, 6,000 health workers had previously tested positive for COVID-19 and 14,000 had not, Financial Times reported.  Excellent news for anyone who has already had #COVID19! Twenty days into the largest mass vaccination program in U.S. history, questions are mounting about why the rollout is proceeding so slowly, even as the coronavirus pandemic kills Americans at record rates. As of New Year's Eve, roughly 12.4 million doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been distributed to states, but only 2.8 million of those doses have actually been administered, according to CDC data. Both numbers are far below the 20 million doses that Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar vowed to have administered by the end of the year - and woefully behind the 100 million doses that President Donald Trump boasted would be administered by January 1. Perhaps most pathetically, nationwide just 8 percent of the 2.2 million distributed doses dedicated for residents of long-term care facilities have been administered thus far.  The failures have been blamed on various factors, including lack of federal...
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed relief on Thursday after neighbouring Britain agreed a last-minute trade deal with the European Union which he said was the "least bad version of Brexit possible". Ireland, the EU member state most exposed to the fall-out from Britain's departure, was an important player during four rocky years of exit negotiations in which it sought to shelter its highly exposed agricultural sector and avoid a hard border infrastructure with the British region of Northern Ireland. "There is no such thing as a good Brexit for Ireland, but... I believe the agreement reached today is the least bad version of Brexit possible, given current circumstances," Martin said after Britain and the EU announced the deal. While Irish firms have diversified into new markets since 2016, cutting trade to Britain to 9% of total Irish goods exports last year, its nearest neighbour still accounts...
Alex Wong/Getty Images You may remember how, late last year, there was reporting that Rudy Giuliani was under investigation. In October 2019, the Wall Street Journal broke news that federal prosecutors were examining his “business dealings in Ukraine, including his finances, meetings and work for a city mayor there,” along with his bank records. In some new reporting Monday night from NBC News, broken by Rachel Maddow on her MSNBC program, apparently federal prosecutors have more recently “discussed making a legal request for Rudy Giuliani’s electronic communications”: Prosecutors for the Southern District of New York have been in communication about their desire to see Giuliani’s emails with Justice Department officials in Washington, the two sources said. The SDNY needs Washington’s approval before its prosecutors can ask a judge to sign a search warrant for materials that may be protected by attorney-client privilege, according to department policy. It is not known...

Somehow that email was intercepted. Instead she received a scam email with fake instructions. The Rovners unknowingly sent the 20 grand to crooks."She gets to the closing and...

Mexican actress Kate del Castillo is accusing Sean Penn of using her as a pawn in his notorious interview with drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Del Castillo was present for a meeting between Penn and the kingpin in 2015 for a documentary or film the actress intended to make about Guzman's life. Months after the interview took place, Rolling Stone published Penn's interview with Guzman. Speaking on “Red Table Talk: The Estefans” on Facebook Watch, del Castillo faulted Penn for putting her and her loved ones in danger. She also said the situation upended her life as she knew it, leaving her with financial issues and anxiety. “He used me as bait and then he never protected me — and risked my life, my parents’ life, my sister’s life and everybody surrounding me,” del Castillo told Gloria Estefan, her daughter Emily Estefan and her niece Lily Estefan. By JANET McCONNAUGHEY, Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Taiwan-based company and opponents to plans for a $9.4 billion plastics complex have agreed that site preparation can continue except in wetlands and in five known or possible sites of enslaved people’s graves. “It’s important that these sites be protected,” Center for Biological Diversity attorney Julie Teel Simmonds said Thursday. She represents environmental and citizens’ groups in a lawsuit asking a federal judge in Washington, D.C., to overturn permits granted by the Army Corps of Engineers. They had asked last week for an order halting all work until the judge could rule. The agreement lets current preliminary work continue, said Janile Parks, spokeswoman for FG LA LLC, Formosa Plastics Group’s Louisiana member. The corporation plans 10 chemical plants and four other “major facilities” on 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) on the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, between Baton Rouge and...

A new report from Axios details how Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden might be the "luckiest, least scrutinized frontrunner" ever in a presidential election based on the media's highly favorable, hands-off approach to the candidate. In making its case, the news outlet noted that "Biden has yet to be pinned down on an array of legitimate questions" regarding his mysterious intentions on packing the Supreme Court as well as his views on Medicare for All, reallocating police department funding, the Green New Deal, and reparations for black Americans. The former senator also has not been grilled over his questionable support of the 1994 crime bill. The key statisticA poignant example of the media's favorability toward Biden highlighted in the report is a Trump campaign statistic not disputed by the Biden campaign that found that since Aug. 31, "Biden has answered less than half as many questions from the press as...
The plexiglass shields have been put in place onstage where Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris will debate for the one and only time Wednesday night.  Reporters tweeted photos of the barriers at the University of Utah's Kingsbury Hall Wednesday morning after Pence's team finally relented Tuesday night and let the Commission on Presidential Debates put in the additional safety measure, in response to President Donald Trump's coronavirus diagnosis.  With that out of the way, Democrats on Wednesday morning were playing the expectations game, in case Harris stumbled at the debate like 2016 vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine did four years before.  'Tonight we do expect Mike Pence to have a good debate. He has a history of being a successful debater,' said Symone Sanders of the Biden campaign on a call with reporters. 'He was a talk show host. So, look, we are not coming...

Protesters cheer as workers remove the statue of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson from it's pedestal during a driving rainstorm on Monument Avenue Wednesday July 1, 2020, in Richmond, Va. As of July 1, 2020 a new law allowed localities to remove statues. Steve Helber/AP Since the end of May, approximately 60 confederate statues have come down, according to an NPR report.  But in 28 jurisdictions in numerous states across the US, leaders have voted or otherwise decided to protect certain monuments dedicated to the Confederacy. Calls to topple or relocate monuments to Confederate soldiers were reignited following anti-racism and anti-police brutality protests that erupted across the US in May following the police killing of George Floyd. At least 11 people who work in the White House have tested positive for the coronavirus so far. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) on Monday described the White House as a "super protected" environment despite the recent outbreak of COVID-19 among White House staffers and the Trump family. "Every time I've been to the White House, it's sort of been a protected, super protected area," Kennedy told Fox News. He went on to describe the viral outbreak that has killed over 209,000 Americans as "not nearly as lethal as the experts told us it was going to be."
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said in a Monday interview the coronavirus has not been “nearly as lethal” as experts originally believed, but that Americans should take President Donald Trump’s case as an indicator of its highly infectious nature. “Every time I’ve been to the White House, it’s sort of been a protected — super protected area. It was a bubble,” Kennedy said in the interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto. “I think what that shows you is — it shows you what we have learned about this virus. We have learned two things, among others, but two things stood out in my mind. Number one, it’s very contagious. Number two, it’s not nearly as lethal as the experts told us it was going to be. “The latest CDC figures say that of a thousand people who get it… six are going to die, which is six too many,” Kennedy said. “We have to...
PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor appeared on MSNBC early Friday to react to the stunning news of President Donald Trump testing positive for coronavirus, saying this “really upends” his own rhetoric downplaying the virus. Ali Velshi asked if the president might now “embrace a more logical approach to coronavirus.” Alcindor said we’re in “uncharted territory” right now and noted the president’s recent rhetoric about the ongoing pandemic: “The president, of course, said that there was going to be a miracle that did away with this virus. He’s been trying to put the virus and this pandemic in the rearview mirror, saying that essentially the United States is getting through this. And now he, himself, has to contend with the fact that as the president of the United States, he could not protect himself from getting this virus. That’s a remarkable statement. The president has been saying that he’s...
Kamala Harris was seen leaving an appearance in Miami where she was guarded by a Secret Service officer armed with an assault weapon - the same type of gun she vowed to ban. In the photos exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com, the VP hopeful is seen leaving Florida Memorial University on Thursday, ironically being protected by the same assault rifle that she promised to ban within the first 100 days of her term. It's worth noting, however, that Secret Service agents are trained and equipped to handle such a weapon.  Harris made the comments during her run for president last year in a CNN town hall, where she said she would take 'executive action' if Congress didn't pass reasonable gun safety laws, which included enhanced background checks.  There was also a heavy police presence guarding the venue where Harris spoke, with at least two dozen officers protecting the Democrat who supports defunding the...
Protected areas of land around the world have become isolated from each other due to human activities such as farming, mining and urbanisation, study finds.   More than 90 per cent of forests, parks and conservation areas are under intense pressure, leaving protected networks of plants and animals disconnected. Researchers from the University of Queensland studied the location of globally protected areas of land as well as the impact of human activity on these areas.  According to the Australian scientists, these gaps in protected areas could devastate ecosystems as they benefit from being interconnected with other healthy habitats.  Lead author Michelle Ward, a conservation biologist, described the findings that 90 per cent of protected areas are isolated as 'alarming'. The team say countries could make use of their findings as a way to better analyse, understand and manage the placement of protected areas in the future.  More than 90 per...

His death is the first fatal shark attack in the area since 1958.  The horrific mauling was captured by surf watch cameras and witnessed by at least one other rider.  Mourners descended on Greenmount Beach on Wednesday morning to pay their respects to the Miami local - as helicopter crews continued their search for the great white.   Pictured:...
NEW ORLEANS - Louisianians woke up Wednesday, Aug. 26 to news that Laura would be arriving as a Category 4 hurricane.  The storm was expected to hit Lake Charles early Thursday morning.    Throughout the day, doctors, nurses, maintenance and cafeteria workers filled Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. The plan was for several shifts of employees to be ready once the winds picked up that night. Whole floors were designated as sleeping areas for off-duty staff.  Dr. Gary Kohler, a pulmonary critical care physician, arrived for his shift at 6:30 a.m. He remembered sensing how nervous everyone was in those hours before the storm.    “No one wanted to be alone,” he said. “When we were on break, a lot of us would sit around a table together. It was a shared fear of not knowing what was coming.”     In 2005, the hospital was evacuated before Hurricane Rita arrived and devastated the city. Hurricane Laura was predicted to be more ferocious. But this time, there were no plans to leave.     “You can’t help but wonder what’s going to hold and what...

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed state and local government officials of being behind the rise of José Antonio 'El Marro' Yépez and his Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. López Obrador, who often criticizes past administrations for the country's ongoing wave of violence, made the claim during a Sunday afternoon address that was uploaded to social media after El Marro and nine henchmen were captured at approximately 4am local time in the Guanajuato municipality of Juventino Rosas.  'How did this cartel grow so much that Guanajuato became the most violent state in the country? They have 15 percent of the homicides that are committed in the entire country, 15 percent in Guanajuato. That is if there are 100 homicides, 15 are committed in Guanajuato in one day,' López Obrador said. 'And there are days of 20, of 25 homicides, so how did this grow? How did this case happen...
