Savannah, Ga. iStock Dear Catey, In 2022, I plan to retire. I am looking for that special place. The best way I can describe it is Chicago without the weather, taxes and high cost of living. If I never have to experience below-freezing temperatures again, I would be ecstatic. I would also want close proximity to green space for hiking or meditation. I love to travel and want to do more of that once I am retired. I just have not found that perfect place the combines the culture, history and music of Chicago. Through good choices and planning, I will have a monthly income of $10,000 and very little expenses. Any suggestions? Respectfully, C.S. Dear C.S., First off, major props for those “good choices and planning” that will yield you $10,000 a month. This will give you myriad options that can meet most or...
On Monday’s “MSNBC Live,” White House Counsel of Economic Advisers member Jared Bernstein reacted to the Congressional Budget Office study showing that a $15 minimum wage would cost over 1 million jobs by saying that raising the minimum wage increases wages, “we have a tendency to focus on some of the big negatives,” and that “some of the more contemporary minimum wage research,” shows that increasing the minimum wage would have a smaller impact on jobs. Host Chris Jansing asked, “There’s a fascinating study out by the Congressional Budget Office that says it would actually cost 1.4 million jobs by 2025, but would reduce the number of Americans below the poverty line by 900,000. What’s your analysis of that, your reaction?” Bernstein responded, “I mean, with respect, the part you just read leaves out, by far, by far, the most important number in that study, which is 27 million people get...

A cybersecurity adviser says he warned SolarWinds of a potential 'catastrophic' attack if the company didn't amp up internal security measures and the firm's move to Eastern Europe may have exposed it to the massive Russian hack.     In late December it was revealed that the sprawling cyber-espionage attack led by state-backed Russian hackers affected more than 250 federal agencies and private companies beginning as early as October 2019, but went undetected for months. Though US officials say Russian was behind the hacking campaign, the Kremlin denies it.  In the breach, hackers gained access to government and private networks by inserting malicious code recent versions of SolarWinds' premier software product, Orion.   Ian Thornton-Trump, a former cybersecurity adviser at SolarWinds, said he urged management in 2017 to take a more aggressive approach with its internal security, warning that a cybersecurity episode would be 'catastrophic', according to a New York Times report published Saturday....

The biggest-ever rally in the nation’s top smelter is flipping that assumption on its head. Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd., or Chalco, rose a spirited 80% in Hong Kong in November, its best month since its debut almost two decades ago, as equities and metals prices took heart from China’s V-shaped economic rebound and euphoria that a vaccine could soon put an end to the pandemic. But the extra jolt enjoyed by Chalco and its peers suggests a deeper shift in the industry as concerns around overcapacity and high production costs begin to abate. Even after such a sharp advance, some analysts think Chinese aluminum stocks are still worth buying....

Kim Kardashian West just turned 40, and celebrated her birthday on a private island. Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic/Getty Images Kim Kardashian West recently celebrated her 40th birthday with a lavish celebration. She reportedly rented out the entire The Brando resort in Polynesia, effectively renting an entire private island. She took around 30 of her closest friends to the island on a private jet. While food, drinks, and activities were likely included in the buyout, luxury event planner Sonal Shah said that clients of that caliber usually want extras that a private island cannot provide. Shah estimated that hosting a birthday party on the island could have cost upwards of $800,000 — and that's without the private jet and resort buyout. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Heal The cost of a virtual health visit has changed for some people with insurance, even as the coronavirus pandemic rages. That means you may have to pay more to Zoom with your doctor. At the beginning of October, many major insurance companies, including Anthem and UnitedHealth, shifted their policies for telehealth, meaning that cost-sharing for some visits is no longer waived. The changes mostly apply to non-coronavirus related visits, and to people not receiving Medicare. Telehealth has been around for 30 years and the Covid-19 crisis spurred exponential growth, said Kathy Wibberly, director of the Mid-Atlantic Telehealth Resource Center. The pandemic led to policy changes that eliminated many former barriers to the adoption of telehealth, such as reimbursement and HIPAA privacy rules, Wibberly said. At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, some experts expected sky-high home prices in Denver to finally fall. But so far, such predictions have resolutely failed to come true. In August, the average home price in the Mile High City blew past $600,000 for the first time. While that mark wasn't quite eclipsed in September, the situation definitely hasn't improved. According to the latest market trends report from the Denver Metro Association of Realtors, house hunters are facing "the toughest market to buy a home in metro Denver's history." The reason, once again, is demand that is far outstripping supply. DMAR notes that the 5,301 active listings at the end of last month represented the lowest inventory for any September on record by 2,215 properties. Today is a very special day for Black America. While Donald Trump has not yet served a full four-year term as president of the United States, today marks his four-year anniversary with Black America. More specifically, Trump rattled off a slew of terrible statistics, some real, some exaggerated about Black life. “You’re living in poverty,...

Some Lyft drivers are reportedly upset that the ridesharing company is making them purchase their own personal protective gear in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, saying the company ought to provide PPE for free. Lyft, which has a market capitalization of $9.17 billion, is providing masks and vehicle partitions to its most active drivers, while all others will have to buy them from the company’s online store.  The decision has enraged some drivers, who claim Lyft is being insensitive to their needs during the pandemic, according to a report from Digital Trends. “It’s such an unreasonable and overall ridiculous level of cynicism to sell your workers the protective gear that they need for the risks that you expose them to and profit from,” Lyft driver Edan Alva told the tech outlet. A Lyft spokesperson told Digital Trends that the company doesn’t profit off of the PPE that is available...

National HIV Testing Day is June 27, which is Saturday. To find a HIV testing location, you can visit locator.hiv.gov. (Courtesy U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) Much like with the new coronavirus, there’s no vaccine to protect against HIV/AIDS, and 1 in 7 people with HIV don’t know they have it. But getting diagnosed early can make a critical difference. “If you’ve had sex with a person who’s had sex with another, different person, you should be tested for HIV infection,” said Dr. Laura W. Cheever, Sc.M., physician and associate administrator at the HIV/AIDS Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration. Cheever said there’s no downside to an early diagnosis. “If you are found to have HIV and you get on medication, you can live a near normal life span. REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA) — Rhys Devine was born in the pandemic — a quarantine baby — full of love and the apple of her parents’ eyes. “She is happy,” Ceri Devine, Rhys’ mother, said. “She is smiley.” But a few months after she was born, her parents noticed something seemed off. “Everyone kept telling me, ‘It’s nothing. She’s just behind on her development, and I kind of just,” Ceri said. “I felt like there was something wrong.” Rhys was struggling to hold herself upright, so her parents took her to the doctor. “The pediatrician had us come in right away, and she examined her and that was when she expressed her concern that it might be spinal muscular atrophy,” Ceri said. “I remember googling it on my way home from the pediatrician and the first thing that came up was, you know, most infants diagnosed with SMA do not live...
New York Giants: 3 low-cost free agents to help fill the roster By: Alexander Wilson June 24, 2020 ShareTweet0 SharesWhile the New York Giants did improve this off-season exponentially on paper, there are still positions that remained weaned and scarce. The secondary remains young and inexperienced, and the addition of Xavier McKinney only aids that factor. However, they brought in James Bradberry and will hopefully have DeAndre Baker in 2020, if he is exonerated from his legal issues. Nonetheless, exploring the free-agent market is something the Giants are likely doing at all times, and there are a few players that could fit the bill for them in their quest to stop the run at a high-level and play man coverage predominantly under Patrick Graham. Here are three low-cost players the New York Giants could take a look at: 1.) CB Brandon...

Fantasy Baseball, 2020: On April 1, Rob Manfred and Tony Clark (imaginarily) held this joint Zoom news conference. Anyone who earned between $10 million and $20 million will give $500,000. That’s a total of $61.5 million. Manfred:...
