BOSTON (AP) — The last time Scott Spinelli took over a basketball team was a decade ago, when he was an assistant at Maryland and head coach Mark Turgeon picked up a pair of technical fouls at Miami. “We actually were down big. We came back and we lost in double overtime,” Spinelli said on Friday. “The guys rallied for their head coach. We came back and the kids put out a gutty, gutty performance there.” It is Boston College that will be rallying for its head coach on Saturday, when the Eagles (3-13, 1-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) face Notre Dame (9-12, 6-9) in their first game since Jim Christian was fired. Spinelli took over on Feb. 15 as interim head coach after 25 years — his entire college coaching career — as an assistant. “Everything has happened so fast,” Spinelli, who has been friends with Christian since college and...
FA chiefs want ALL Prem academy kids to take refereeing courses - to make respect officials more. Wembley director of professional game relations Andy Ambler is urging clubs to adopt the idea amid concern that abuse handed out to officials both on and off the pitch could impact the next generation of whistlers coming through the grass roots game. 1Abuse of referees is a major issue in Premier League footballCredit: Getty - Pool Ambler said: “If every 16 or 17 year old at an academy was made to go through a refereeing course it would help them have empathy and understanding of the Laws of the game. “I would go further, and make them referee games to see what it is like and to make refereeing courses for young players mandatory. “It would be a step forward and it is something that I’d like to discuss with the Premier League...
Fresh off helping to successfully convince Gov. Gavin Newsom to give outdoor sports the green light, De La Salle football coach Justin Alumbaugh now has a team to get ready. And he’ll do so without two of his star seniors: Sacramento State-bound quarterback Dorian Hale and Cal-bound defensive back Lu-Magia Hearns, who have both chosen not to play this spring in order to get ready for their freshmen college seasons. “Both of those guys are still absolutely members of the team,” Alumbaugh said Tuesday. “But Dorian is competing for the starting quarterback job at Sac State in a couple of months and Lu is competing at Cal in a couple of months. “Love both those kids. Completely support them. Completely understand. I am glad that they’re still awesome members of our team.”  Luke Dermon will take over from Hale at quarterback. The junior also is a...
NFL teams could begin playing tag on Monday, and it's no kids' game for the 32 teams. Applying franchise and even transition tags to players can have major ramifications on a team's present and future. That was never more of a consideration than this year, with the salary cap decreasing for now by $18 million. That's the first time the cap has gone down, which is due to lost revenues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM "It has always gone up," says Bill Polian, a Pro Football Hall of Fame executive. "So have the expectations of the players and agents. This is the first time this is not happening. That is a sea change." While this mini-tidal wave likely is only for the upcoming season — the league's broadcast deals should be solidified soon and will bolster future caps — it certainly could...
AN Australian mum has shared her cheap McFlurry ordering hack which allows her to get five ice-cream treats for less than £3 In the UK a typical McFlurry from McDonald's would cost 99p, but in Australia its a whopping $5.10 (£2.86) - so that means she saves a huge $20 (£11.24) every time she orders. 3An Australian mum has shared her cheap McFlurry ordering hack which allows her to get five ice-cream treats for less than £3Credit: Facebook While the saving isn't as big based on UK prices, if you were to do the same you could still make a significant saving - and they are the perfect sizes for kids. DENVER (CBS4)- Peyton Manning will forever be part of Broncos franchise history thanks to his part in leading the team to a win in Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers. His four years with the organization came when his twins, Marshall and Mosley, were very young. Perhaps that’s why the pair of them have become fans of their dad’s former divisional rival, the Kansas City Chiefs. Reopened schools can help address disparity Re. “Coronavirus: Rich Bay Area kids head back to class, others stay home,” Page A1, Feb. 11 : How is it fair for me to go to in person school while other children don’t have the option? It’s not. Every kid should go to school if they can stay safe by following all the rules given by the teachers, no matter where they live. I think the open schools should invite kids from the closed schools. My school has plenty of room because only half of the students came back. And if somehow the classrooms get filled up, kids can definitely work outside where there is plenty of room on the school playground. I have been back for almost an entire month. This is a huge improvement, and I...

More than half of the children in the United States play video games on Roblox. In fact, the massively popular gaming platform has grown so much during the coronavirus pandemic, the company's valuation has skyrocketed from $4 billion in early 2020 to $30 billion in early 2021. What makes Roblox so popular? It's a social gaming platform where users can play a library of games and hang out and chat with their friends. There are games for all ages and tastes — games where you raise a virtual pet, operate a pizzeria with friends or run amok in an open-world take on cops-and-robbers. Roblox also relies on its own users to develop games for its platform — not giant, publicly traded studios such as Electronic Arts or Activision Blizzard. Its game creation engine, Roblox Studio, allows users to make games and receive a cut of the profits. "If you think...
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper makes kids’ day by playing an impromptu game of catch. It’s not too often that you run into an NFL star outside of the football stadium. But it is rare that you get the chance to actually play catch with one of the top receivers in the league. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper was out house hunting, according to TMZ Sports, and spotted kids playing football on their front lawns. It is not lost on the Rangers’ veterans that the team’s shaky start to the 2020-21 season has fallen on their shoulders. Players like Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich and Jacob Trouba certainly don’t need the coaching staff to tell them this young squad won’t even come close to securing a playoff berth in three months without their help. But with a quarter of the season in the books, the Rangers are sitting nearly in the basement of the East Division — ahead in points of just the Devils and Sabres, teams that have had COVID-19 outbreaks impact their game schedules — with just four wins in 13 games. The clock is ticking, and the time for the veterans to figure things out is dwindling. The Rangers’ last even-strength goal from one of the aforementioned veterans — one that wasn’t on the power play or an empty netter —...

Getty Line judge Sarah Thomas #53 officiates a game between the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles during the second half at Lincoln Financial Field on September 8, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sarah Thomas is making NFL history on February 7 as the first female referee to ever officiate a Super Bowl. All eyes will be on the 47-year-old mother of three as she steps onto the field to referee the biggest televised sporting event of the year. The NFL first announced that Thomas would be one of Super Bowl LV’s referees in January, thrusting the statuesque blonde woman born in Pascagoula, Mississippi into the media spotlight. While Thomas has been officiating NFL games since 2015, many have never heard of her name prior to his year. Thomas, who’s been married to husband Brian Thomas since 2000, has three kids. Josh Bailey’s absence could open up big opportunity for some of the kids on the Islanders By: Rob Taub January 21, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditIt took one week into the 2020-21 season, but the Islanders have finally been hit with their first COVID-19 situation. Josh Bailey, who was missing from practice yesterday for which the team didn’t give an explanation, was placed on the NHL’s COVID protocol list last night. Bailey being on the updated ledger was first reported by ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski and later confirmed by The Athletic’s Arthur Staple. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — On Thursday, student-athletes in Minnesota returned to the court and ice rink for their first games and scrimmages of the winter sports season. SUNDAY, Jan. 3, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Kids and teens may be eager to return to their regular sports routines when it's possible to play again, after being sidelined by COVID-19 restrictions. But a sports medicine specialist in California says they should take it slow to avoid injury. "I understand the excitement about returning to sports, but sometimes kids can get too excited and rev up too soon," said Dr. Bianca Edison of Children's Orthopaedic Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. "We've been seeing a sudden rush of injuries happening because a gradual return wasn't pursued." Injuries can occur whenever an athlete has been sidelined. Edison offered tips for getting kids safely back to their sports. If young people haven't maintained their fitness routine during the break, it's important to re-establish their training levels over six to eight weeks, Edison said. Dear Amy: We have had a small group of close-knit friends for several years who we essentially do everything with. All of our kids play together, even though they go to different schools. Columnist Amy Dickinson (Bill Hogan/Chicago Tribune)  My kids don’t have the option of online learning and are attending in-person school. My friends’ kids are home. Because of this, the families have been staying apart. It’s been emotionally hard on us. We have missed them and can’t help but feel left out since we can’t join any of their group activities. In October, when I included a couple sentences in a group email about our son playing soccer, I received a very angry/upset email reply. I was told how much hearing this news upset my friend (to the point of crying), because they have kept their kids home without any outside activities. She said she didn’t want to...

Roger Berlind, Tony-winning Broadway producer, dies at 90 Biden calls out Trump for not yet signing COVID relief bill Mark Schlereth Compares NFL Run Game to Raising Kids "Establishing the run" is a very contentious subject among NFL fans. The concept is simple: one side argues that teams have to run the ball, regardless of their success in doing so, in order to keep the defense guessing and help set up the passing game. The other side argues that it's the definition of insanity to run the ball over and over again when it's not working under the guise of making passing easier. Especially in today's NFL, when gaining yards through the air has never been easier or more prolific, running the ball to set up the pass seems backwards. © Provided by The Big Lead Leonard Fournette | Kevin C. Football has a special place in the heart for many Texans, especially high school football. But sometimes that passion can lead to trouble when parents and referees disagree on how a certain play is ruled. With things like scholarships, high expectations, and pride on the line, many parents can get just as involved, if not more, than their students. And that’s a problem for referees in youth sports. According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Sports Officials and published in the Harvard Gazette, adult behavior is the reason more than 75% of high school referees quit. This come as schools across the country are struggling to find referees for their games. The same study also says that 80% of new referees quit after only serving two years, because of the same reason. Psychologists at Harvard say the reason we continue to see a rising rate of bad...

Liberty football’s historic regular season has officially come to an end. The university announced Thursday that it is cancelling Saturday’s top-25 matchup against rival Coastal Carolina and pausing all team activities because of an elevated number of COVID-19 cases within the football program. “We were really looking forward to a top-25 game down at Coastal,” head coach Hugh Freeze said during a press conference following the announcement. “I love those type of games. I love the attention it brings to our program and I think our kids would [have] flourish in that competition and have a chance to beat a top-15 team.” “It is disappointing, but nothing can take away the joy of the accomplishments that our kids and staff have gotten done this year, in this crazy 2020,” Freeze continued. “So we will celebrate that a lot more than we will focus...
It was supposed to be the grand reopening. De La Salle vs. St. John Bosco, kicking off a high school football season in California that has been delayed since the summer because of the coronavirus pandemic. The rematch of last season’s Open Division state championship game, won by Bosco nearly 12 months ago, was scheduled to unfold in Southern California on Jan. 8. But with the announcement Tuesday that high school football practice in California won’t start until state health officials provide guidelines for youth sports, presumably after the first of the year, the De La Salle-Bosco game won’t happen in early January. But will it happen at all? De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said Tuesday that it could, noting that in conversations he’s had with coaches, including Bosco’s Jason Negro, everybody is on the same page. “Let’s get games in for our kids,”...

ARSENAL face Molde in the Europa League tomorrow looking to secure their place in the next round. And with several youngsters on the plane, Mikel Arteta looks set to give youth a chance with up to four potentially starting the game. 2How Arsenal could line up against Molde The Gunners have won all three of their opening Group B fixtures in the Europa League - while averaging three goals per game. And having beaten Molde 4-1 at the Emirates in their last Europa League game earlier this month, Arteta is seemingly confident he can win in Norway with a youthful XI. The group were seen arriving at Luton airport yesterday for their trip to Scandinavia. Bernd Leno started against Molde last time out but he is line for a rest...
The Jets went West Friday evening, boarded their chartered flight for Los Angeles for what we can’t help but assume will be their 10th loss in 10 games this season when they play the Chargers Sunday. But if you listened to Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams on Friday, they went West an enthusiastic group because of the youth being infused into their lineup. No fewer than 10 rookies played for the Jets against the Patriots in their last game. That youth movement will continue against the Chargers, most notably in the secondary, where fifth-round draft pick Bryce Hall will make his first NFL start at cornerback and third-rounder Ashtyn Davis starts at safety. This is in addition to the rookies who have been contributing already, like left tackle Mekhi Becton, receiver Denzel Mims and running back La’Mical Perine. Like it or not, youth will be playing these final seven games...
WANT your kids to be smarter? In fact, would you like them to be more sociable, quicker-thinking, more decisive, happier and more successful too? 5The scientific community is proving the positive effects gaming can have on kids' developmentCredit: Getty If the answer is yes (and let’s hope it is), I have the answer: Make sure they play video games. Picking up a control pad regularly is, I believe, as important as doing a few hours of maths a week, learning masculine or feminine nouns in French or signing them up for the local footie team. It is certainly more important than GCSE geography. And, finally, the scientific community is proving it. Gaming is having a bit of a week. The sumptuous PS5 and Xbox Series X have landed — a once-every-seven-years moment when we all salivate over new consoles we can’t possibly buy because they are sold out until Easter....
Editor’s note: This is one in a series of Q&A’s that Bay Area Preps HQ is doing with high school league commissioners throughout the region in advance of the scheduled start of practice for sports such as football, volleyball and water polo in December. Look for links to the published Q&A’s here. Commissioner Dave Kiesel and the West Alameda County Conference’s athletic directors have no shortage of questions about what the future holds for high school sports over the next several months. But, like every other high school administrator in the state, they simply do not know when those answers from the California Interscholastic Federation will arrive. “All they’ve said is that they’ll let you know when we know,” Kiesel said this week. “I guess that’s the part that’s frustrating our athletic directors and our principals and our coaches in our schools, is that they don’t know...
Bugsnax, the latest game from Young Horses, is a physics-based adventure game packed with charming characters and clever, albeit simplistic, puzzles. It’s also the first video game I’ve been able to play start to finish alongside my young children. I’m not talking about playing the game with my kids, mind you. This time around we each have our own save files, and instead of me rushing into the room to take the controller and help them through a difficult level, instead I go to my 10 and 7-year-olds for tips — and vice versa. Trouble is that Bugsnax just isn’t all that satisfying as an adult. Even with a respectable run-time of around 12 hours, it tastes more like a fluffy appetizer than a rich, full meal. Worst of all, the gameplay itself feels unfinished. In Bugsnax, I take on the role of a Muppet-like creature called a Grumpus. My...
IRONTON — Truth be told, the Ironton Fighting Tigers are holding all the cards. Now, in order for another November to remember —and for the Fighting Tigers to play for two more weeks beyond Saturday —the key is playing them correctly. Those hands start against the visiting Ridgewood Generals, as the top two seeds — for the second consecutive season — square off in the Division V Region 19 championship game, which takes place this year inside Ironton’s historic Tanks Memorial Stadium. Kickoff in Ironton is set for 7 p.m., as — this time for added measure —both the Generals and Fighting Tigers tangle with undefeated 9-0 records. Last season in the Region 19 final, the top-seeded Fighting Tigers topped the Generals 24-14 at Nelsonville-York’s Boston Field —en route to their state runner-up appearance. Not much has changed since, as both clubs are indeed very good, although Ironton —which trailed...

It’s easy to assume many kids would rather be playing video games than going to school. As a result, C-NET put together a list of the five educational video games that are actually fun to play. 1. The updated law will take effect on June 1st, 2021. To some extent, this is formalizing what China has done before. It was already exploring the ethics of game addiction, and developers like Tencent have already put checks in place. However, an explicit ban on addictive content could force sites and game creators to put checks in place to be safe, even if they’re not convinced kids will be hooked. While that will mostly affect China-focused digital goods, it could have an effect on the Chinese-made games and services you see elsewhere.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Bob McDonald, the all-time winningest coach in Minnesota high school basketball, died Wednesday at age 87. McDonald’s demeanor was demanding. He was the constant on the Iron Range, demanding his players kept their hair short, avoided tattoos, and wear sport coats on game days. It was a different mold than young coaches of today, McDonald would say. “You got these young kids come in, and as soon as they get a little flack, they’re gone,” McDonald said. MISSION, Kan. (AP) — Health officials in Kansas' largest county are making it easier for older students to head back to class even as coronavirus outbreaks in schools and sports infect hundreds statewide. Johnson County’s health department released new criteria Thursday that allow middle and high schoolers to switch to a hybrid mode in which they go in-person part of the time and learn at home the rest as long as there are safety precautions in place such as masks and daily symptoms screenings, The Kansas City Star reports. Health officials previously said that younger students could return to classrooms full-time. The move comes as the suburban Kansas City county averaged 113 new cases each day last week, which was the third highest new case count since the pandemic began, epidemiologist Elizabeth Holzschuh said. And cases have been rising among children under the age of 19 and showing up in...
