NORTH DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Two winters ago I was thumbing through some plant catalogs and ran across some blackberries I wanted to try in the garden. After making sure the variety was on the “recommended” list from the Texas A&M Extension, I placed my order for mail deliver. What I got in the mail about a month later was about a half-dozen sticks with roots attached, wrapped in wet newspaper. This is called bare root stock; don’t ever be intimidated if you want to buy your plants this way. There are some distinct advantages. I paid a visit to my new favorite tree nursery, the Sorelle Tree Farm in Mineola. Ed Donnelly and his wife offer up the most amazing selection of edible landscapes I have seen in north Texas. Ed took us through all the steps on how to plant bare root stock. The highlights include keeping the roots wet...
Tua Tagovailoa, after being drafted No. 5 overall in 2020, had to wait his turn to start at quarterback for the Dolphins. But he thinks he was meant to sit behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for seven games — and will be a much-impoved second-year QB because of it. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” Tagovailoa told Sporting News. “Everything played out the way it’s supposed to play out. I got to learn a lot from Fitzpatrick — he’s a great guy. At the same time, I also got the opportunity to get in the game, get some playing time” With Fitzpatrick heading into free agency, it’s unlikely that Miami brings back the well-traveled veteran to either back up or toggie with Tagovailoa. Even though it was only one season, Tagovailoa expects to keep benefiting from the strong relationship. “It was big — very big — to have Ryan. A lot of...
Amazon Once upon a time, I owned a house with old pipes and lots of trees in the yard. Over time, the roots of those trees twisted and grew around my main drain line that transported wastewater and, well, waste to the sewer line out front in the street. Eventually, those tree roots cracked into that main drain line and clogged it up. I had to call a plumber out every so often to clean out the pipes with a drain cleaning machine. Also called an electric drain cleaner or sewer cleaning machine, these large auger tools feature a rotating bit on the end of a flexible metal shaft. The bit is sharp and spins quickly like a drill however, the steel shaft can be fed dozens of feet down the pipe to clear blockages, tree roots, and the like. What I learned is that, with a little...
Blake Shelton served Kelly Clarkson a low blow on Tuesday night's episode of "The Voice" by claiming she's much too busy to coach a contestant. When contestant Gean Garcia, 19, was up for grabs during part two of blind auditions, Shelton blocked newcomer Nick Jonas, who replaced Gwen Stefani for Season 20. He then attempted to undermine Clarkson's abilities by joking that she "doesn't really have time for this" while hosting her award-winning daytime talk show, "The Kelly Clarkson Show." Shelton further alleged that Clarkson has "completely gone Hollywood now," according to USA Today, adding that she's "forgot her roots." Unfortunately for Shelton, Clarkson had some jokes of her own up her sleeve. Prince George’s County interim Police Chief Hector Velez told the county council his department is taking steps to ensure that white supremacists aren’t given badges and guns in the Maryland county. As Maryland lawmakers consider a wide-ranging police reform bill, Velez was asked by a council member about what Prince George’s County police are doing to prevent the hiring of white supremacists, in a county where about 75% of the population is Black or Hispanic. “Every recruit officer has to sit down with a psychologist. They also have to take a battery of tests,” said Velez, who was named interim chief in November 2020 after Chief Hank Stawinski abruptly resigned. A new unredacted report detailed allegations of systemic racism inside the department, under both Stawinski and Velez, was released last week. Velez told the council the department uses a multi-pronged method of screening potential hires to discover biases. “We’re looking...

(CNN)"Superman & Lois" was plucked from the ribs of the current crop of the CW's DC superhero dramas, but its strongest connection is to an earlier series, the long-running "Smallville." Adding a family/coming-of-age component to the Man of Steel's mythology, the show cleverly ties into the deep roots of the franchise, at least initially proving you can go home again.Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprise their roles from "Supergirl" as the title characters, with the wrinkle that they're raising 14-year-old twins who may or may not follow in dad's high-flying footsteps.Named for their two paternal grandfathers, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin) are as different as they could be -- the former an easy-going jock with the world seemingly laid out for him, the latter troubled and filled with self-doubts.Kent family dynamics are soon tested, however, when Superman/Clark must travel home to Kansas, reconnecting with, among others, his high-school...

At a time when the economy remains in tatters, the coronavirus continues to kill, and Texas is colder than Stephen Miller’s heart, does Joe Biden really need to worry about what we call those who are in this country illegally? Oh yeah. This week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it would forevermore use “inclusive” language in public and intra-agency communications. It was a warmup to an immigration-reform bill that seeks to offer a pathway to citizenship for more than 11 million people in this country without legal status. So say adiós to any official mention of “assimilation,” and hola to “civic integration.” Time to replace “alien” with “noncitizen.” And “illegal alien,” the harsh-sounding couplet that conjures up images of intergalactic invasions? Biden’s team wants his people to instead go with “undocumented noncitizen” or “undocumented individual.” The move has triggered expected responses from the Left and Right — the former...

Having the right soil and right amount of water goes a long way toward having a successful vegetable garden, whether you’re planting in ground beds or containers on your patio. Contra Costa Master Gardener Janet Miller answered many of the questions that arose during our recent Gardening 101 webinar. Q. What’s the best way of dealing with heavy, heavy clay soil? A. Clay soils are rich in nutrients, but thick and difficult to dig through. To help break up the clay, amend the soil with compost. It could take several seasons to get the soil to the point you want it. Q. How do you know how much to water your plants? A. That’s the $64,000 question, and unfortunately, it doesn’t have one answer. It depends on your soil, where the plants are located (full sun or shade), and the type of plants you grow. For most vegetables, you want...

“Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon,” Colin Bryar and Bill Carr (St. Martin’s Press) This book reads like a how-to guide, which perhaps is by design — Bryar and Carr both were long-time Amazonians and their vantage point is that of an enthusiast rather than a critic. To be sure, Amazon offers much to admire. The company is approaching 1 million employees, a stunning rise from the 600 in 1997, the company’s first year as a public company. Bryar and Carr’s book derives its title from Amazon’s practice of designing a business segment starting with the desired customer experience. Well, that’s not so different, you say. But Amazon excels in part because it has created rigorous procedures for everything it does. Rather than using widely used presentation slide series for example, where the information is distilled into graphics and phrases, Amazon culture calls for a six-page report,...

NEW YORK (AP) — “Peanuts” star Snoopy is famous for being a highly imaginative dog, liable at to go off on loony flights of fancy. But, it turns out, his world has some strict rules. No adults can be heard there, just trombones. No technology past the 1970s can be used. And under no circumstances may the inside of Snoopy’s doghouse ever be shown. Creators of the new animated series “The Snoopy Show” had to learn and respect all the rules as they crafted stories for Apple TV+ that were true to the original strips and various previous shows. “I think the rules have actually made the story so much stronger, to go, ‘How do we play in the sandbox?’” says Stephanie Betts, an executive vice president at media company WildBrain. “And actually, we realized it was so much wider than you can even imagine.” The series, which debuts...

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — There’s only one rule in the event that has captured the imaginations of all the high-flying daredevils at the Winter X Games: Do something cool. This weekend, cool will happen in a contest called Knuckle Huck, a set of low-flying, highly creative trips down the mountain that have, in many minds, helped action sports rediscover their roots. Without the bright lights and TV cameras, this very well might be what snowboarding or freestyle skiing looks like when friends get together for a day on the slopes. The uniquely Winter X contest works like this: A group of snowboarders (competition starts Friday night) or freestyle skiers (Sunday) have 20 minutes to “huck” themselves over the bottom “knuckle” of the hill that’s set up near the big-air venue — bypassing the massive kicker completely. Judges rank the riders on overall impression — no scores. The winner takes...

Amid the unfolding disaster of COVID-19 have been moments of generosity, whether it’s people pulling together support for college students who’ve been tossed out of dorms, or collecting money to help restaurant workers, street vendors and movie theater employees pay for their medicine, groceries and rent. These mutual aid support networks, in which communities take responsibility to care for one another rather than leaving individuals to fend for themselves, have proliferated across the country as the pandemic turns lives upside-down. The nonprofit Town Hall Project created Mutual Aid Hub to track all the various collective efforts when the coronavirus began its rapid global spread in March. Back then, it counted only 50 mutual aid groups but by May, the number grew to more than 800 in 48 states, driven by what the hub’s lead organizer Shivani Desai called a “grassroots explosion of organizing.” While these informal networks have...
Proud of his roots, the 46th President of the United States, made many gestures and promises with regard to Ireland. There, the population expects a lot from its mandate. Correspondent in Dublin En leaving Delaware for Washington on the eve of his inauguration, it is a very moved Joe Biden who quoted James Joyce in his speech. Irish poets have long been a part of his rhetoric – Seamus Heaney, WB Yeats… A way for him to recall again and again his roots and his attachment to the Emerald Isle. It is already 170 years since Joe Biden’s ancestors left Lough and Mayo counties, fleeing the Great Famine for the New World. But Irish culture does not dissolve so quickly – evidenced by the 30 million or so Americans who too claim this heritage. When Joe Biden grew up in Scranton, it was a...

The other day, thanks to the miracle of the modern hand-held TV channel changer, I was mindlessly watching 10 things at once when I saw an ad for Creative Roots soft drinks that said that up to one in two children is not hydrated enough, and it could be the reason why a kid isn’t acting like their self. During a science class, the Creative Roots team of fruits notices an underhydrated student and quickly springs into action. Soon a bottle of juice is launched and parachuted to the kid’s side so she can get back to focusing on her group science project. Creative Roots says its products can provide the juice flavors kids love with only one gram of sugar. Whoa, that has got to be ridiculous – every other kid is dehydrated right now. As near as I can tell from ispot.tv this assertion stems from a study...

The announcement of Auto Chess MOBA perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising, as Dragonest has released other MOBA games. The publisher will bring over characters from Auto Chess as playable heroes. Other features of Auto Chess MOBA include destructible objects and day and night cycles.  Loring Lee, Dragonest’s CEO, noted in an announcement video that Auto Chess MOBA won’t have pay-to-win elements — all of the heroes and runes will be free. There won’t be any way to boost your stats outside of the game either. Auto Chess MOBA will only be available for mobile at the outset, though Dragonest didn’t discuss release details. Given that the standalone version of Auto Chess arrived on iOS and Android before it hit the Epic Games Store and PlayStation 4, you shouldn’t rule out the possibility of the MOBA eventually coming to PC or consoles.
CHICAGO (WLS) -- In the early 1980s, there was a big push to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a holiday. The House has just impeached Donald Trump for the second time following a violent insurrection by his supporters that endangered the lives of Vice President Mike Pence and members of Congress. Trump got into the White House to begin with despite losing the popular vote in 2016, but went on to pack the federal courts with lifetime judges, including appointing one in three Supreme Court justices. The recent Republican Senate majority, which refused to rein in Trump’s abuses after his first impeachment, was elected with 20 million fewer votes than the Democratic minority. You don’t have to look far or hard for evidence of the flaws in U.S. democracy. But in thinking about how to fix it, it’s helpful to have a framework for understanding what’s going on here—the roots of the problems and how deep they go. Political scientist Douglas Amy offers a start on that with Second Rate Democracy, a website laying out 17 ways the...

Considered a convinced European, Armin Laschet is in line with the policy pursued so far by Angela Merkel. At 59, the latter won this Saturday the presidency of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the largest party in Germany, against his two political opponents. Her victory opens her, in theory, the race to succeed the Chancellor in view of the legislative elections of September 26. In other words, it should weigh heavily in the policy pursued by our neighbors. This is not to displease the elected officials of our region, including the mayor of La Louvière, who learned this Saturday that the family of this former journalist is from Haine-Saint-Pierre. His grandfather had indeed immigrated to Germany, to Aix-la-Chapelle, where Armin Laschet was born in 1961. “It is an honor for La Louvière and it is perhaps also an opportunity for Belgium, for Wallonia to forge stronger links...
GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Captain Joe Root’s fourth double test century gave England a lead of 286 runs against Sri Lanka in the first cricket test on Saturday. Root hit 18 fours and a six in his well-composed 228 off 321 balls before England was bowled out for 421 just before lunch on the third day. Sri Lanka was rattled for 135 in its first innings on the first day inside the first two sessions after its stand-in captain Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and opted to bat. The home team faces a much sterner test against the likes of Dom Bess and Jack Leach in the second innings on a wicket where spinners are getting appreciable turn and bounce off the wicket. Dilruwan Perera ended Root’s long vigil, which began in the last session on the first day, when he had England skipper caught at deep mid-wicket...
Prince Harry is reportedly struggling to make meaningful friendships and build roots in his new home in California. Lankston added that part of the reason behind the rocky start to California life was because the duke was separated both physically and emotionally from his friends and family. Over the past couple of years, the media has widely reported on his rift with older brother Prince William, which allegedly began after William urged his younger brother to take his relationship with Meghan slowly. The resulting fallout was described as “worse than anyone thinks” and “as dangerous...

Saul Loeb/AFP via Getty ImagesConfederate soldiers never reached the Capitol during the Civil War. But the Confederate battle flag was flown by rioters in the U.S. Capitol building for the first time ever on Jan. 6. The flag’s prominence in the Capitol riot comes as no surprise to those who, like me, know its history: Since its debut during the Civil War, the Confederate battle flag has been flown regularly by white insurrectionists and reactionaries fighting against rising tides of newly won Black political power. There’s an iconic photograph of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that was taken as he triumphantly boarded one of the first integrated buses in Montgomery, Alabama. It was 1956 and King looks out a window, firmly at the front of the bus, almost gazing toward his movement’s next big social hurdle. The image was taken by Ernest Withers, a key chronicler of the civil rights movement — and an FBI informant. That the FBI wanted someone close and watching King is at the heart of director Sam Pollard’s engrossing documentary “MLK/FBI,” a film that artfully explains how the two sides of that slash came to be enemies. Pollard is a veteran producer and filmmaker who co-directed two episodes of “Eyes on the Prize” and earned an Oscar nomination for editing Spike Lee’s blistering 1997 film “4 Little Girls.” In “MLK/FBI,” Pollard explains how J.
