Facebook’s gradual addition of measures encouraging addiction was “a page from Big Tobacco’s playbook,” according to former Facebook executive Tim Kendall. “At Facebook, I believe we sought to mine as much human attention as possible, and turned it into historically unprecedented profits,” Kendall, the company’s former director of monetization, said in Thursday testimony before a House panel. “To do this, we didn’t simply create something useful and fun. We took a page from Big Tobacco’s playbook, working to make our offering addictive at the outset.” He expanded on those comments in a Thursday evening interview with CNN’s Don Lemon. “I think when we look back at tobacco, it probably wasn’t obvious, in 1930 and 1940, when they were putting the additives in, you know, each decade, and making the cigarette more and more addictive, exactly what was happening,” Kendall said. “But now that we look back on it, we just see this arc of addiction....

But there’s a point that’s worth noting. Bureau policy allowed personal use of FBI smartphones. ... Having said that, just because something might be allowed doesn’t necessarily make it wise or prudent,” Strzok wrote in his new book, Compromised. “To be clear, I have made some terrible personal decisions, and they have hurt the people and institutions I love the most in the world — my wife, my family, and the Bureau — in a way that I’m deeply sorry for. MSNBC's Joe Scarborough went on a lengthy tirade Friday against the conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal editorial board for characterizing Bob Woodward's new book as a "non-revelation." The Morning Joe host focused on a column published on Thursday which chastised Democrats for using the recordings of the president's conversations with the Watergate sleuth to say President Trump is "responsible" for the deaths of the nearly 200,000 people who have died from COVID-19, "which is contemptible even by today’s political standards." Scarborough, who is a former Republican congressman, began by asking if the editorial board felt the president was "responsible" for a fraction of the deaths. "Maybe he only killed 4,000 out of 190,000? You think that’s probably pretty safe to say that him lying about this pandemic, him lying about this virus, him underplaying the risk so much so that people would run into stores, at Walmart, and tear down displays...

A Manhattan judge will rule Thursday on whether to unseal dozens of court documents that could expose a number of names linked to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell is fighting against the disclosure of the roughly 80 documents — which are part of a since-settled 2015 defamation lawsuit filed by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre. The filings include part of a seven-hour, 418-page deposition Maxwell gave in 2016, in which her lawyers say she was subjected to “intrusive” questions about her sex life. They also include flight logs and police reports from Florida, where Epstein pleaded guilty in 2007 to state prostitution charges in exchange for 13 months in jail. Maxwell’s lawyers have argued that unsealing the documents could jeopardize Maxwell’s criminal sex abuse case and expose many “non-parties.” “The subject matter … is extremely personal, confidential and subject to considerable abuse by the media,” Maxwell’s lawyer Jeffrey...

The probe will also include the mayor’s handling of the protests that wracked Louisville in the wake of the shootings, CNN reported. Those protests continue in Louisville, and have attracted local celebrities including “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Porsha Williams and “Love & Hip Hop” favorite Yandy Smith, both of whom were arrested during a demonstration there Tuesday. The Louisville Metro Council’s decision to probe “action and inaction” by Mayor Greg Fischer and his administration was made Monday, the outlet said. There is as yet no timeline for the probe by the council’s Oversight and Audit Committee. But the investigation will include the death of Taylor, an EMT accidentally slain in her home as police executed a no-knock warrant,...
Georgia cops thought they found a dead body alongside railroad tracks this week — and oddly didn’t realize it was actually a sex doll until the coroner showed up, according to a new report. Liberty County Sheriff’s Office authorities believe the life-like doll was placed there as a set-up for police, WSAV reported. Detective Mike Albritton found the fully dressed “body” in Allenhurst, near Dunlevie Road, around 2 p.m. Tuesday, the station reported. By policy, law enforcement officers aren’t allowed to touch a deceased person until the coroner arrives, so they placed a sheet over it and waited, according to the report. Once the coroner arrived, detectives began to check for injuries and instantly realized that the body was in fact a sex doll. The fully-dressed, anatomically correct doll had realistic skin and features, authorities told the outlet. Albritton told the station he’d never encountered anything so bizarre during his...
Dr. Anthony Fauci can add cover model to his resume. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, ditched his mask to pose for the September cover of InStyle magazine. The top infectious disease expert invited photographer Frankie Alduino to his home last month to capture him sporting sunglasses and a button-down for the glossy, poolside shoot. Fauci and his wife, bioethicist Dr. Christine Grady, also spoke with journalist Norah O’Donnell for an interview that will be featured in the issue. During the interview, the couple, who have been married since 1985, discussed their life during the pandemic, saying they try to incorporate exercise into their regimen. “I used to say ‘run,’ but I don’t run very much anymore because at the end of the run, various parts of my body hurt so much,” Fauci said. “Power walking is very enjoyable and relaxing, and we look forward...
And if you threw a housewarming party and invited everyone you knew. Well, now you can. The home from the still-popular television series “The Golden Girls,” which is also known for its catchy theme song, will soon hit the market for almost $3 million, reports The Wall Street Journal. Though the show is set in Miami, this house is located across the country in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood at 245 N. Saltair Ave. The Journal reports that the crew used the exterior of the property on the show’s first season to represent Blanche’s (played by Rue McClanahan) house, which she shared with Rose (Betty White), Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and Sophia (Estelle Getty), following the death of her husband. But for the subsequent six seasons, a crew built an exact replica of the home at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, in Orlando, Florida, which remained there until 2003. The show...
Britney Spears’ mom, Lynne Spears, has filed legal documents to ensure she is included on decisions regarding her daughter’s finances. According to documents obtained by The Blast, Lynne, 65, filed a request with the Los Angeles County Courts on Monday to be included in any “special notice” of “all matters” having to do with Britney’s multi-million dollar trust. The “Toxic” singer, 38, established the “SJB Revocable Trust” in 2004 in order to protect her finances and make sure her sons, Sean, 14, and Jayden, 13, would be provided for. It was also established to “hold and manage her material financial assets during her lifetime, and provide distribution of those assets upon her death.” The Blast reported that the trust included a wide swath of possessions besides property, bank and stock accounts, including “furniture and furnishings, clothing, jewelry, vehicles and accessories to vehicles, books, paintings, and other artwork, and other tangible...
Jennifer Aniston is a friend that’s always been there for Katy Perry. The pregnant pop star has tapped her longtime pal to be her unborn daughter’s godmother, The Daily Mirror reported Saturday. Perry, 35, is just weeks away from giving birth to her first child with fiance Orlando Bloom, 43. Aniston reportedly broke down with tears of joy when the couple asked her to step into the role. “She is pretty chuffed about it as well and cried when they asked her,” a source told the tabloid. The two have been friends for nearly a decade and have bonded even further during the coronavirus pandemic. “Katy and Jen are very close. During lockdown they went for socially distanced walks, and spent lots of time catching up,” the source said. Aniston’s already racked up years of experience as a godmother to Courteney Cox’s 16-year-old daughter Coco. Perry is in high spirits...
The hundreds of elephants that mysteriously died in Botswana might have been victims of a pachyderm-adverse pathogen, a deadly new novel disease, according to the government. The world was shocked earlier this month when the intact bodies of 281 elephants were found near the Okavango Delta. Samples were sent to Zimbabwe and South Africa and initial results have, according to Bloomberg, “eliminated known diseases that would cause mass deaths and this may signal ‘novel diseases,’ the government said in a statement.” Although the number of deaths so far represents a fraction of the estimated 130,000 elephants in Botswana, there are fears more could die if authorities cannot establish the cause soon. A protester who claimed to have been hit by a car on Long Island was charged Wednesday with filing a false report, police said. Keith Harrison was at the Black Lives Matter protest in Huntington Station Monday around 6:45 p.m. when a man struck one of the marchers with his SUV, according to Suffolk County Police. Harrison, 56, allegedly filed a police report stating that he’d also been hit — but an investigation proved otherwise, cops said. Police have said that another man was injured when Anthony Cambareri allegedly plowed into the group of about 20 marchers. Jeremiah Bennett, 26, bounced off the hood of the vehicle and sustained damages to his wrist, arm and back, the Long Island Herald reported Wednesday. “This man tried to kill people with his car,” Bennett wrote on Facebook, according to the paper. Another protester posted a video of cops catching up with Cambareri...
Kevin Hart doesn’t take his birthday for granted. The comedian, who turned 41 on Monday, celebrated by posting a smiling snap of himself on a boat, stating he is “lucky to be alive.” “So blessed & so thankful to see the age 41….I’m lucky to be alive,” Hart wrote on Instagram. “There will never be another day that just goes by in my life that’s not treated with the highest level of respect and appreciation. He continued, “God is great!!!! Thank you….Happy B Day to me damn it!!!!! #LiveLoveLaugh.” Hart has endured an eventful year, beginning last September when he sustained “major back injuries” as a result of a Los Angeles car crash. The “Night School” star was a passenger in a vehicle that veered off Mulholland Highway near Malibu. The car careened down an embankment and slammed into a tree. The accident fractured Hart’s spine in three places, necessitating...
New York’s Republican Party is reduced to hoping Democrats screw up so badly that voters give the GOP another try. Democrats gained a hefty 40-23 advantage in the state Senate last year. And if they keep control for the redistricting after the 2020 census, gerrymandering could well lock the GOP out for a decade. Meanwhile, most big donors — the business community, especially real estate — feel compelled to “pay rent” to those in power, paying heavily for a hope of seeing their interests acknowledged. The opposition still matters in both chambers — pointing out flaws in bills, offering common-sense ideas, bolstering the spines of beleagured Democratic moderates and so on. But it’s depressing work, prompting a wave of retirements among the remaining GOP senators — making it tougher for the party to even keep the seats it still has. But this means much-needed fresh blood, and officeholders committed to...
DEAR ABBY: I’m a 60-year-old woman. My house is on a corner lot. Just about every time I walk outside, a male neighbor of mine stares at me. He looks like a hobo. Jeanne Phillips  I felt bad for him, so when he came to the edge of his yard, I asked him from my deck how he was doing because of the quarantine. He responded by telling me to wear a dress because he wants to have sex with me! I was stunned and went back into the house. I didn’t know he was that crazy. Besides ignoring him, what if anything should I do? Rumors are swirling that Ellen DeGeneres might have her last dance. Insiders are whispering that the “Ellen” show could be canceled soon, amid reports of falling ratings and allegations over DeGeneres, 62, being “rude” to her staff, the Sun reports. However, when reached by The Post for comment about the claims, DeGeneres’ production company reps said “Telepictures can confirm it’s untrue.” The syndicated talk show has been on the air since 2003. The comedian — who is married to “Arrested Development” star Portia de Rossi, 47 — hosts it with a jovial presence, always ready with a smile and a dance. But recent behind-the-scenes reports have painted a different picture. Most recently, DeGeneres courted controversy in April when crew members from her show spoke out about their treatment during the shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to Variety, they had little communication or transparency about the status of their...
The father of Elijah McClain called for those responsible for his 23-year-old son’s police custody death to be “held accountable for their actions,” as federal authorities probe the case. “I don’t understand it, I just don’t understand it,” grieving father LaWayne Mosley told CBS News. “He’s just a bundle of joy. I mean, just my baby. My baby boy.” McClain, a Colorado massage therapist, was stopped by cops in Aurora on Aug. 24 while walking home from a corner store and placed in a chokehold after a 911 call about a suspicious person in the area. He told police, “I can’t breathe.” McClain, who was black, was injected with the sedative ketamine by paramedics and went into cardiac arrest. He was declared brain dead and was taken off life support days later. Federal officials revealed Tuesday that they have been reviewing McClain’s death as a potential civil rights violation. Last...
New York traffic — the great equalizer. Two Maseratis worth a total of $207,000 were swiped from a Manhattan dealership — including one that a thief ditched Friday morning after getting caught at a red light a block away, police said. An employee noticed the $120,000 white 2019 Maserati GTS missing from the showroom of the dealership at West 54th Street and 12th Avenue around 8:30 a.m. — then spotted the souped up ride running on the street outside the exit for the service area. The worker approached the car but the alleged thief, Mave Grey, peeled off — only to get caught at a red light 500 feet away at West 54th Street and Eleventhh Avenue, cops said. When the employee caught up to Grey, he allegedly climbed out of the Maserati — which can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed...
A Georgia prosecutor is due to announce Wednesday if two Atlanta cops will face criminal charges in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. to reveal the fates of ex-cop Garrett Rolfe, whose two shots killed Brooks, and officer Devin Brosnan, who was placed on administrative leave, Howard said in a release. Howard said Sunday that there were three “relevant” charges in the case — manslaughter, murder, and felony murder. “But I believe in this instance, what we have to choose between — if there’s a choice to be made — is between murder and felony murder,” the prosecutor said then. Brooks was killed Friday after a confrontation with the two cops outside a Wendy’s restaurant. Brooks, 27, struggled with the officers when they tried to handcuff him after a field sobriety test. He scuffled with the...
